Woman drives car into street party, around 30 hurt

Around 30 people were hurt, some seriously, when a woman drove her car into a street party in Lima, Ohio, Friday night.

“It was unreal. There were bodies, and shoes and jewelry,” The Lima News reported Amee Truesdale as saying. “They took many, many people to the hospital, and two or three of them looked seriously hurt ... I saw men pick up that car and move out a gentleman that was pinned underneath.”

The driver, who reportedly had a dog with her, was parked near the town's main square when she accelerated rapidly, a police spokesman told NBC News.

The driver's name will be released pending the investigation, the spokesman added.

"This is definitely an accident," Sgt. Jack Jarlock was quoted by Reuters as saying. "There may have been some confusion on her part. She may have gotten in a panic of some sort."

The car that hit some 30 people sits next to the sculpture it crashed into Friday in Lima, Ohio.

The car plowed through tables and finally stopped when it hit a large sculpture, The Lima News reported.

The crowd was attending an event with music put on by ArtSpace Lima.

No fatalities were reported, but rescue workers said there were numerous head, neck and leg injuries, The Lima News reported.

St. Rita's Medical Center received some 30 people Friday night, a spokeswoman told NBC News. Four of them were admitted and, of those, two are in critical but stable condition.  The two others are stable.

This reminds me of the elderly driver that plowed through a crowd in San Fransisco.

The family instantly transferred all assets of the elderly driver and by the time the case hit the courts he and his wife were infirmed and could not even assist in their own defense so they were acquitted.

If anyone wants proof that some aged drivers should not be operating any more just go to a church (being it is Sunday) parking lot and watch Gurtrude and Mildred try to park. You will always know which way they turned last because the turn signal will still be on.

Are you saying there are some drivers out there that actually USE their turn signal?

to Buckeye Starr,

Why of course it was about gay-bashing and you. How could it be about anything else.

to Mean Mr. Mustard,

I can see that your handle comes from a Beatles song from the "Abbey Road" album. Also, on the strip across the street from the college I went to there was a club by that name. Their music was mostly alternative/new wave/punk/psychedelic/dance/goth/whatever but they played other musical styles. For instance, Sunday nights there was AC/DC / Cult night. You'd hear "Who Made Who" followed by "Love Removal Machine" and on and on. Funny ain't it? I took quite a few girlfriends on dates to that joint. Good memories. Of course that leads to another point. I ain't gay. I don't have a problem with LGBT people but I figured that since my hometown had a Pride parade yesterday maybe Lima did too. Some people still have the immature notion that "kill all fags" is a cool thing to do. It isn't. Have a good evening.

In other words, she never hit the brakes. No doubt she was a "safe" driver with no speeding tickets. And I have to share the road with garbage like this?

Usually women are the safer driver that men, the only thing is that they cause nearly ALL accidents.

Can you spell "law suit". The lawyers will do well on this one. See Obama is bringing back more jobs- lawyers, cops and judge, health care workers and street cleaners have more work to do here.

Lady, here's your defense in court: tell them you are addicted to bowling, and with the lack of light on the street at nighttime you misconstrued the people for bowling pins. Thinking you were back on the lanes at the bowl-a-rama, you just had to knock 'em all down.

My guess is that she was distracted by the dog. It should be illegal to have a pet in a vehicle unless the pet is secured in the back seat or in a travel kennel, but the best solution is to tie the dog to the roof.

It is save to assume the driver is young; if not, age would be deemed to be the cause. Every person, who applies for a driver's license, needs to be screened. No drug atticts, the insane or people with dangerous uncontrolled condistions should be able to drive. That being said; there is a possibility that there was a mechanical problem, which caused it.

There was a reason your mother told you not to play in the street. If you don't have a music venue, then maybe you shouldn't have it at all. Streets are for cars, it would be different if she had driven up on a sidewalk.

haha...not this time! Where I grew up in Sarasota though blue-hairs in huge vehicles are constant threat to themselves and others. It's the worst city in Florida to ride a bike in, I've seen geriatrics drive right up on the sidewalk and just keep going, never mind a delineated bike lane. There were several incidents of seniors driving off the boat ramp near the Hyatt thinking they were turning north onto US-41. Would not be a surprise to find out this was some 80-something who claims they didn't even realize what happened.

She might press the wrong pedal and she thought she was going to go home very soon; or she was alcoholism; or she was intentionally to press the gas pedal . . .

Do a psychological eval and blood and alcohol test and drug test.

Either a geriatric who mistook the gas pedal for the brakes, or she was texting, or just a nutjob behind the wheel. In any case take her license away and give her an appropriate fine and/or jail time.

Usually this sort of thing involves an SUV. That's probably the most surprising part of this article.

Time to out law motor vehicles, talk about a WMD & taking of innocence lives unnecessarily. Just because a human was driving doesn't mean a thing in this day & age.

So how are the medical expenses going to be covered? Minimum bodily injury insurance is only $25K total per accident, so that's less than a $1,000 per person which certainly won't cover medical costs of the injured. She's screwed.
