Atheist blogger Leah Libresco converts to Christianity

A prominent atheist blogger says she has converted to Christianity.

Leah Libresco made the announcement on Monday on her Patheos blog, "Unequally Yoked." The blog post, titled "This is my last post for the Patheos Atheist Portal," details how Libresco came to her decision.

She said she struggled with moral law, exploring where it comes from and what's behind it. As an atheist, she states that friends told her that her philosophy was unsustainable.

"I was ready to admit that there were parts of Christianity and Catholicism that seemed like a pretty good match for the bits of my moral system that I was most sure of, while meanwhile my own philosophy was pretty kludged together and not particularly satisfactory," she wrote.

She goes back to the night before Palm Sunday, where after a debate on religion she then had a discussion with a friend about morality.

After a back-and-forth where her friend asked her to make an argument about where moral law comes from, she couldn't think of any. She then realized that it had to come from something like a person or being.

"I believed that the Moral Law wasn’t just a Platonic truth, abstract and distant.  It turns out I actually believed it was some kind of Person, as well as Truth.  And there was one religion that seemed like the most promising way to reach back to that living Truth," she writes.

Despite her newfound religion, she said she's still confused about the church's stance on homosexuality.

Her post had received more than 750 comments by Tuesday afternoon, with most voicing support and congratulations.

One comment read: "So, so happy for you, Leah! I’ve been praying for you before, and I’ll ramp it up even more. The adventure has just begun!"

It's not the first time an atheist blogger has found religion. A blogger who goes by "The Raving Atheist" announced on his blog he was turning to Christianity a few years ago, The Blaze reported. The blog's name has since been changed to "The Raving Theist."

According to her blog, Libriesco grew up in a secular household in Long Island, N.Y. She dated a Christian, agreeing to go to church once a week in exchange that he go to ballroom dance class. She writes that both recommended books and blogs to each other that fueled all-night debates.

Libresco previously blogged for the Atheist portion of the Pantheos website. She said that her blog will now be moved over to the Patheos Catholic channel. The Patheos site is used for discussion and finding information on different faiths.

In addition to Patheos, Libresco has also blogged for The Huffington Post religion section.

Libresco did not immediately respond Tuesday to an email from msnbc.com for further comment.

to paraphrase "I couldn't find a start for morality (meaning when did it start) so therefore, I turned to fables written about 3,000 years ago". Pretty much like saying, there isn't a definitive link between men and monkeys so therefore, some great being came out of the sky and took some mud and breathed life into it and that makes a whole lot of more sense than evolution...yeah...great reasoning there Leah. I don't see an answer so therefore, make one up. That will get you to the "afterlife".

GetOverYourSelfDamn - I'm sure you, like many other hypocrites, take delight in it. Your arrogance is in violation of the teachings of Christ - but your kind don't really care about what He said when it doesn't align with your agenda.

Buried at the bottom is her real reason for "finding" religion. She dated a christian. Conversion due to romantic relationships is incredibly common.

Oh well, hope she is happy. Not too bright, but hopefully happy.

I'm noticing a common trend between posts. The ones that hated her and damned her are now embracing her with open arms because she's following their beloved doctrine and telling them how right they are, while the ones who got her to where she was (she'd literally BE nothing without atheism) are the ones that are giving the Middle Finger Salute. It's not hard to see that one group would be upset while the other would be going "Do ho ho ho ho! Who's wrong now?!". It's kind of like watching school children fight.

Frankly, I could care less. Most of the folks who "turn" become "Born Again" Zealots for a while, see that what they joined into wasn't everything they thought it'd be, then they'll go crawling back to their core audience, ashamed they got swept up in it. That or they'll lead perfectly happy, normal, self-fulfilled lives, like every other person that is or isn't religious. Frankly, I just don't care, as it seems people are just so brutally fickle about their own beliefs, and must subscribe to a certain doctrine to fill in the blanks for them, rather than using common sense.

And just so you know, to hate a person isnt the way of Christians. Because hatred isnt Christ-like at all. God is love, not hate. And just as Jesus loved us, we should in return love others. And its sad that so many Christians get it wrong. The Lord wants us to spread his word, but many try to shove it down others' throats. That is not how our Lord wants it to be. He wants everyone to come to him by their own free will. If he didnt, we'd be puppets or robots without a will of our own.

@Peach, doesn't change the fact that she dated a christian who made her attend church. Apparently all her friends are jesus freaks. It is entirely natural to convert under these conditions.

@gotham, "bright" as in intelligent and able to reason clearly. Religion fails under basic logical scrutiny.

So basically the people before our time were considered idiots right? But history tells us that they were quite intelligent, and they were Christians too! And btw, there's only one way to "make" someone do something. It is as my civics teacher said, "He didnt get inside your brain and make you do it" She chose to do it, just as you choose to say she's not very bright. I myself grew up as a Christian and the majority of people I see everyday arent Christians. The intelligent thing to do is to rise above peer pressure, but unfortunately most fall into it. If your friends are doing it, so should you, right? Wrong. When your drunk, your not thinking clearly because your under the influence of alcohol. If I recall, one of the Lord's greatest miracles was turning water to wine. Alcohol isnt a sin, its drinking yourself into a drunken state thats a sin. Having sex isnt a sin, its all about the timing. And Christians were never meant to be angry moody boring stiffs who are unhappy all the time, Jesus wants us to be happy. To enjoy life and to laugh, to love, to dream. To actually make something of ourselves. But he doesnt want us to forget about him, he wants us to remember him and praise him in the midst of both our suffering and our happiness.

You need proof that God is real and Jesus is Lord? Read some of these anti-Christian posts. They never just express their opinions in a sane, rational, conversational way. Christianity frustrates and infuriates them. Why? Because there is a spiritual battle raging all around us between God and Satan. Satan hates Christianity more than any other religion because he knows it is real. He isn't worried about any of the others. And he instills that same hatred in his followers. And they pick up the hue and cry like good little peons. Rage on, God haters. In the end, you lose and we win.

You're god is fake. There is no proof that it's real. Here's a perfect quote for a religious nut job like you.

      "

The Bible, that’s God’s book. As far as I know the Devil hasn’t brought out a book, we don’t know his side of the argument. If you ask me the Devil and God are having an argument and the Devil is being the bigger man, cause God’s just writing sh_t about him and the Devil’s going “I’m not even gonna f’ing comment son, if you talk about me like that”

      Yes!

Read some of these anti-Christian posts. They never just express their opinions in a sane, rational, conversational way.

How is that proof of god?

Christianity frustrates and infuriates them. Why?

Because of the nonsensical, illogical, and sanctimonious claims made by christians.

Satan hates Christianity more than any other religion because he knows it is real.

So you're saying all non-christian religions is false or wrong? And you ask why christianity infuriates some people?

Rage on, God haters. In the end, you lose and we win.

How can someone hate what doesn't exist?

You can never be completely sure. However, the vast majority of the evidence suggests there is no Deity with any sort of interaction with humanity. And the world's major religions, if taken literally, are impossible.

Not quite. He said he would be willing to entertain the possibility of a god if evidence was forthcoming. As it is, there is no such evidence.

God is the creator of everything, the stars and the planets, the sun and moon, the people and animals of the world

          That's nice. Prove it!

Once was enough and doesn't change the idea that he did such a thing. Homcidal? Nah. Genocidal? Absolutely!

But what did they say? Thats not gonna happen. You mad!? You gotta be to believe something like that could ever happen.

You know what, the flood never really did happen!

Because we are debating the "virtues" of religion, silly.

And if I recall, He said he'd never do that again and He kept his word.

Oh, ok. I guess if Hitler said he'd never do the holocaust again we'd be cool with him too.

And btw, The Lord warned everyone, had Noah warn everyone. But what did they say? Thats not gonna happen.

I hear crazy people tell me crap all the time. Why would they believe one nutcase. After all, god did not warn everyone personally.

You mad!? You gotta be to believe something like that could ever happen.

No, because it is physically impossible, and also because such an event would leave tons of evidence that is not found (in fact evidence to the contrary is everywhere).

They challenged God, people should know not to challenge the Lord. They challenged him and it cost them their lives, except for the obedient Noah and his family, along with two of every animal on that ark.

So all the trillions of other animals died, not to mention the children, and Noah obviously wouldn't have been able to tell EVERYONE given that such a journey around the world speaking to millions of people would have taken longer than his 700 year life (*snicker*). So it seems to me a bunch of innocent and unsuspecting people died due to a temper tantrum. That is pretty homicidal to me.

Let me start off by saying that I am a Christian, but I am not a Christian because of the Christian morality code (if there is such a singular thing.) Leah doesn't seem to give much thought to the possible non-religious sources of morality, such as biological imperatives. We, as a species, must be social to survive because we, as a species, are not the most physically spectacular of organisms. That being said, a social species that has a well developed mind that defaults to protection of self is going to very quickly find out that the individual is best served in a social setting by optimizing her and her group's goals (since her overall success in survival is both a function of her individual success and the success of her group.) Very quickly, that would lead to simple rules of how individuals should act in a society to best help that society to thrive. Things like murder, stealing, and coveting of people's spouses are things that would tear down the trust in a society, and thus would put the society (and therefore individuals in that society) in danger.

Or the origins of all myths; things that Christianity conveniently 'borrowed'.

Yes, we worship a pope, that must be why God is mentioned instead of the word pope. A pope is a human being, not the creator of all that lives and breathes. When's the last time a pope had the power to do the amazing things God can do? When's the last time strippers walked on water, raised the dead, made a thunderstorm or brought forth hurricanes? When alcohol can put a man's ear back on his head as though it never got sliced off, then I'll bow down and worship it.

You Christian haters have got a few things wrong. Yes, the Bible was written by many men but I can't figure what you think their agenda was. They lived and wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God in many different areas over a couple of thousand years when there was no telephone, newspaper, computer. How do you think they were able to conspire to all write basically the same message under those circumstances for their "agenda"? And for the idiot who said they did it for the pope, there wasn't a pope at that time, so if they did that they must have been inspired by God. And you were right about pagan practices being incorporated into Catholicism. That's why some of us are Protestants, even more horrendous, the dreaded evangelical fundamentalists! Praise God!

"Christian haters?" Not hardly. Why is it that the Bible-thumpers, or any fundamentalist religious exponents seem unable to participate in an open discussion without dragging out their emotional baggage and flogging everyone in sight who doesn't agree with them? Challenge of belief, even faith, is supposed to be strengthening, but some see it as a personal attack, a threat to their eternal souls. It's not just Christians that put a burr under some folks' saddles, it's anyone who can't discuss a subject, admittedly sensitive, like an adult, sans foaming at the mouth, face-reddening choler.

When you lose your temper, communication stops. That's been mankind's problem all along, and it ain't getting any better, despite all the posturing and pontificating. Ask Dr. Martin Luther King.

Being an Atheist is just as pretentious as being Christian. Nobody REALLY knows because dead people can't speak.

I have plenty to live for. Everyday is a new day and I can't wait to see what happens. Also I live for my family and loved ones. If that makes me "pathetic", then so be it. I'm the happiest pathetic person on the planet!

                          >>"Being an Atheist is just as pretentious as being Christian."

At least you found a way to act superior to both of them. That's the important thing.

                          >>"Nobody REALLY knows because dead people can't speak."

Why can't they? Why can't dead people speak? What part of they go to heaven or some kind of afterlife implies that there can be no communication? As an atheist, I think consciousness is the product of a brain, because every incident of consciousness we've ever observed has been the product of the brain. When the brain stops working, you are simply dead and your consciousness is no more. I predict actively that dead people can't speak, because dead people are dead and not really people anymore.

How does one go from believing consciousness survives death and is magically immortal, to an understanding that there can be no communication at all between the dead and the living. That's not a prediction of religion, and actually if the dead could tell living people "Yo, Christianity is the money, Jesus is the way", then the results would be heaven for significantly more people and a clear net benefit across the board.

So in the end you're saying that as I an atheist I can't *really* know because my worldview fits perfectly with all the observation that have ever been made and actively tends towards explaining why those observations are true. My evidence is so overwhelming that it counts as common sense rather than evidence?

                                  2. The Daily Beast (a known conservative rant blog and associated with Rupert Murdoch) broke the story.

                                  3. Most atheists have never heard of her before(I sure haven't).

                                  4. Claims without proof of non-belief with a sudden claim of conversion and nothing that backs her story up?

Labels, labels, labels...join a club and get a label, everybody has to have a label.

Star-bellied Sneetches, Bare-Tummied Sneetches, yada, yada, yada. I see fish on car trunks, some with Darwin inset, which I guess negates the premise of the fish insignia. I hear "Born again", and wonder: "Why? Didn't get it right the first time?" I see people killing each other viciously over their labels, many of them who purportedly belong to the same club, except they came in through different doors.

People ask: "Have you found the Lord?" I reply: "No, has he gone missing again?"

We'd all be a lot better off if we could just keep our beliefs to ourselves, and let the other guy do the same, but nature (and organized religion - aye, there's the rub) abhor a vacuum, so more club members are needed to validate beliefs and swell membership (K-ching!) If I sound cynical, it's only because I ask myself: if there is a supreme, omnipotent, omniscient deity, would it approve and allow all this mayhem in the name of "God" to go on and on, atrocity after atrocity, for millennia?

P.S. Apparently, no one view is the "correct" one, because the earth is still as screwed up as it always has been, courtesy of the creatures supposedly made in the Creator's image. What's wrong with this picture?

I believed that the Moral Law wasn’t just a Platonic truth, abstract and distant. It turns out I actually believed it was some kind of Person, as well as Truth. And there was one religion that seemed like the most promising way to reach back to that living Truth.

I don't think that any of us can criticize a person who completely steps outside their skin, their life and ideology. If your frame of mind is so narrow that you see either a atheist or a blabbering idiot where a intelligent young woman was moments before, you are truly corrupt in spirit. The question posed to her was explain moral foundation, not survival or evolution. She couldn't and most of you won't be able to either. Dawkins and others explain new moral order based on law and science but he can't explain why those morals don't occur in non-religious countries. Nor why scientists fail to remain true to any one code or direction of societal influence. Historically, societies of atheists degrade to murderous quagmires over time, so I'm not sure what science or moral theorists miss about that fact.

She was brave to have done what she did, she would have been brave to have done the reverse. Good for her for actually having free will.

Hitler was a catholic, looks like she joined the club. The problem with her logic is that she assumes there is "Moral Law", that morals are objective, which they clearly are not.

"suck" - is that an educated man's word, EngEsq? You seem to look down on Christians from such a hauty, self-promoted loft. Do you know enough about God's Word to know He said He would use the foolish things of the world to confound the wise? And we do confound you, don't we?

gordy, this was a Christian nation for about 200 years. When I was in public school in the 50's and early 60's we had prayer and Bible reading in class every day. But then came the "sexual revolution" of the 60's and the removal of God from public life, beginning with the schools, and, guess what? Everything that happens when a nation goes into moral decline ( just read history) began to happen. All the freedom I had as a child has been taken away from today's children. Now they can't go out and play because of pedophiles; we all live behind locks and fear, fear of being robbed, raped, and murdered, fear of incurable sexual diseases; babies having babies and then not wanting to be responsible for them, divorce off the chart. But you think we would be so much better off without religion. You will get your wish. In the tribulation the Bible says God will remove that which has been holding back the evil, and the whole world will reduce to anarchy. There will be world-wide economic disaster (Are you keeping up with what is happening to the world's economy? But of course you are; you are too educated to do otherwise.) There will be cataclysmic astronomical disasters. (Are you keeping up there, too? Some of that space junk is getting mighty close.) Did you read the SCIENTIFIC article last week headed "The Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse are Saddling Up"? The Bible has had it right all these thousands of years and the ones who don't want to believe it do so because they don't want to answer to a higher power. They want to be their own god. Reminds me of years ago when New Ager Shirley McLane stood on a mountain and shouted out into space in her tiny, squeaky voice, "I am god." What a ludicrous image. You are fighting a losing battle and wasting what few years God has given you. Why don't you want to do some good with your life? Good luck, and try to practice what you preach.

this was a Christian nation for about 200 years.

Demonstratably false! This is a secular nation which happens to have many christians in it. I defy you to prove otherwise!

. But then came the "sexual revolution" of the 60's and the removal of God from public life, beginning with the schools, and, guess what?

Don't be so melodramatic. God hasn't been removed from anything. Government agencies, like puplic schools, cannot promote or endorse god or religious ideology.

Everything that happens when a nation goes into moral decline ( just read history) began to happen.

                                                Morality is independent of religion!

But you think we would be so much better off without religion.

                                                Absolutely!

Now they can't go out and play because of pedophiles; we all live behind locks and fear, fear of being robbed, raped, and murdered, fear of incurable sexual diseases; babies having babies and then not wanting to be responsible for them, divorce off the chart.

Which has what to do with religion? Or do you seriously think all people who fall under those categories are areligious?

In the tribulation the Bible says God will remove that which has been holding back the evil, and the whole world will reduce to anarchy.

Mere fairy tales is all. Good for a laugh.

There will be world-wide economic disaster (Are you keeping up with what is happening to the world's economy? But of course you are; you are too educated to do otherwise.)

Yes I am and I'm also educated enough to know the economy has been worse before too!

There will be cataclysmic astronomical disasters. (Are you keeping up there, too? Some of that space junk is getting mighty close.)

There has always been those too. Nothing new there.

The Bible has had it right all these thousands of years and the ones who don't want to believe it do so because they don't want to answer to a higher power.

                                                How about proving it first?

Why don't you want to do some good with your life?

You have no idea what I do so don't presume to tell me what my life is worth in your condenscending tone!

In fact it is. I happen to have more education than 97% of the population and they came from the #1 public university in the nation and a top tier law school based upon the US World report.

So indeed, "suck" is an educated man's word when speaking casually on an anonymous internet forum (as is stupider and cool).

I shure do. In fact survey after survey has shown that atheists have a better understanding of the content of the bible than religious folks on average.

@EngEsq: Well, actually not! The Bible predicts all this deterioration of morality and mankind, whcih gets worse every day and of which you seem to be so proud, and says exactly what is to come, so it's really no surprise to a Bible scholor, which you clearly are not.

you have to love all the atheists getting so mad at some one changing their religious status. I'm catholic, but I don't really care if you are the same or not, but yet atheists accuse me of being a mindless prick who hates on homosexuals. and then they attack her here after she pulls this. I don't even know the women, or how this is actual news, but to be so angry at some one for doing something like this is silly.

I do not hand out pamphlets on a street corner, and I do not ring your doorbell on a weekend morning to discuss atheism. So no, unless the topic iss being debated an an appropriate forum I do not press anyone on their belief system.

There is a preponderance of proof that the Judeo-Christian God exists, but people like you who don't want to bow to a higher power, who want to be their own god, stick your ostrich heads in the perverbial sand of atheism and refuse to look at the Truth. A better vision just ran through my head---a little boy who doesn't want to hear what you are saying to him, sticking his fingers in his ears and singing "la,la,la" at the top of his lungs. Go ahead and plug your ears and sing; you are the ones who will lose in the end.

Yeah, I've seen preachers fall into porn addiction, pastors who have gotten busted at strip clubs, and all that kinda stuff. It happens, yes their pastors but being a pastor doesnt keep you from being human. Teachers do it, presidents do it too. The difference: Not saying all of them but the ones who actually have a shred of morality know their wrong and ask for forgiveness. And I wonder, how happy are the athiests? To be so upset over this stuff, cant help feeling bad for them.
