Northeast starts summer with temps in the 90s, some of them records

Summer brought 90-degree temperatures, setting record highs in Burlington, Vt., New York and Newark, N.J. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

Temperatures across the Northeast approached triple digits Wednesday, with some areas breaking their June 20 records, just as summer officially began on the longest day of the year.

NBCNewYork.com reported that new June 20 records included: New York City's LaGuardia Airport at 98 degrees (previous record was 96 in 1953); JFK Airport at 94 degrees (topping 93 in 1955); and Newark, N.J., at 98 (topping 97 in 1953).

Temperatures were 10 to 20 degrees above average across the region and the humidity made it feel even hotter.

In New York City's Central Park, when the temperature hit 93 the humidity made it feel like 97. In Boston, it was 93 but  felt like 100.

Several people were treated for heat exhaustion at a high school graduation in North Bergen, N.J., and taken to a hospital, The Record of Bergen County reported. Ambulances were on standby at the event, which was held outside to accommodate about 5,000 people, said Capt. Gerald Sanzari of the North Bergen Police Department.

In Howell, N.J., school officials made Wednesday the last day of the school year instead of Thursday, citing the heat. And at nearby Wall High School, people attending the graduation ceremony will be able to watch a remote broadcast inside the air-conditioned building.

Weather.com posted these temps for 3:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Sweltering heat also persisted farther to the west in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, including Chicago, Ill., Detroit, Mich., Cleveland, Ohio, and Louisville, Ky.

Health officials warned residents to drink water, stay out of the sun and in air conditioning, and to check on elderly neighbors and pets. For those without air conditioning, "cooling centers" were set up in public buildings in dozens of cities.

New York City's 1.1 million public school students are still in session for another week, and just 64 percent of classrooms are air-conditioned.

Students were being advised to wear light clothing and drink plenty of water, and schools have been told to limit outdoor playtime, city Education Department spokeswoman Marge Feinberg said.

In Brooklyn, street vendor James Martin said his family's sixth-floor apartment in Coney Island has no air conditioning and can get really hot. But "we open the front door and all the windows, and we get a nice breeze," he said.

Celebrating the warm summer months, as schools let out and the cooling off begins

Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y., opened several spray parks on Tuesday to help residents cool off as hot, muggy weather settled in. Buffalo, which will only be in the mid- to high-80s on Wednesday and Thursday, doesn't normally open its 11 splash pads until July 1.

PhotoBlog: Record high temperatures to greet summer solstice

In a rare bending of the rules, the Metro in Washington, D.C., said passengers on Wednesday and Thursday would be allowed to drink water, an exception to their no-drinks policy.

The National Weather Service said the temperature at Washington National Airport was 95 degrees just before 2 p.m., though it felt like 99.

Moderate relief from the high mercury should come this weekend.

It's going to be in the 90's for 2 days and they act like we're going to melt. Makes us look like wimps up here in the northeast. Big deal. No need to panic people of the north. It's 2 days. The air conditioner peope have had them on for weeks now. It's been average temps most of this spring. Don't be such a puss. I don't believe in air conditioners. If it's hot, maybe you will sweat some fat off. No harm there. Suck it up people. Put the fan in the window. Can't beat the fresh breeze.

Yep all those Democratic lifelong students of science (a.k.a. Liberal Arts Majors) know all about global warming and it's cause....chlorofluorocarbon...er...aerosol cans....er...R12 freon...R22 freon...coal burning plants...er...cow farts.....yeah that's the one.

It's a good thing we have such smart people to tell all of us stupid people what's causing the global warming. It's not a weather cycle that repeats itself every 30 years or so right? I must have been mistaken, because I swear as a kid growing up in Philly in the 70s, and 80s that 95 degrees in the summer was not that uncommon.

No need to panic people of the north.

Why do you consider it panic when people are reminded to check on their elderly neighbors or to stay hydrated in this heat?

If it's hot, maybe you will sweat some fat off.

Or die if your elderly. These articles are not written to stroke egos. They are written to inform people of the potential heat related injuries if you're not prepared for it.

I don't believe in air conditioners.

Well good for you. Believe it or not, there are people out there that need them. Think about those with respiratory issues and add in near triple digit weather with high humidity.

It's been average temps most of this spring.

No it hasn't. I am getting ready to harvest vegetables that shouldn't be ready for another month.

Outside of your little bubble, things are quite different.

Well said NYMike. Though some of the comments are jokes, and I don't mind poking a little fun, some of these people argue needlessly and don't see the point of the news story.

I too have plants and fruit growing much earlier than they have the last few years.

And for the Global Warmers: Global Warming is a long term effect on climate, and affects average temps. And yes the average has been higher than normal. But it doesn't mean that just because these next couple of days will be hot its because of global warming. Its just hot, as it tends to be this time of year.

I'm in NH dude. Not suck york. So thanks but no thanks. It's going to be hot for 2 days. Thats it. I know the elderly with breathing problems could possibly have issues. Did I say otherwise? I'm speaking about just general people. Get off your soap box and spare me the details. You are obviously a complete moron. It's been in the 90's before. It is not impending doom. Why is it when the NE USA has high temps it's a story of high alert? Most of the south and southwest have had these high temps since late May or early June. We have elderly that we need to watch as well. Between the NE states and california this country would be a whole lot less selfish.

I think the problem here is that many people don't realise how many people there are per square mile in the New York area compared to other places. And all these people and offices suddenly turning on air conditioners drain power systems and it could cause power outages. Also the millions of people who spend time outside be it for fun or work need to be advised.

It is NOT the same thing as it would be in some small town in Idaho.

My point was about people using air conditioners when it's actually chilly during the evening. I know people need them sometimes. There are the ones that think they need 80% heat in the winter and then 50% cooling during summer. It's a huge waste. I personally put up with the hot temps for a couple days just to save the money. If we were talking near 100% and humid for a period of time I would totally agree with you. But 2 days is not a problem for the everyday joe shmoe. I was not talking about the elderly at all. In that case there are plenty of people who need controlled temperature in medical environments, doesn't just include elderly.

Hey disappinted...cut the crap about NY'ers. I've lived in NYC all my life and happen to agree with you about the over-reaction of some people to high temps. Yes, the elderly and the very young are prone to heat-related issues, and anyone with half a brain (which covers the vast majority of posters in comment threads on news sites) should know enough to keep an eye on them without having the media remind us every second. I just came in from an hour-long walk during my lunch break, and while it certainly is hot out, it wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. And the streets weren't any less crowded than usual. As stated by someone earlier, the biggest concern with consecutive days of heat in NYC (or any other big city) is the high air-conditioner usage, which can strain the power grid (and since the NIMBY idiots in NYC get their panties in a bunch every time ConEd wants to build a new power plant to address this, that's not going to change any time in the near future). But again, the blanket statements about how you hate all NY'ers is nothing but complete ignorance.

Ah, the climate change crowd. Yes there is, no there isn't. All based on the weather today.

It's simple - the polar ice caps shrink - there's more water in the global system.

More water in the global system drives more dramatic storms and higher coastal tides

If you want to see if there is global warming - check the ice caps and the tides - not the daily temperatures. In fact, winters will initially be more severe - again because of the moisture.

By the time you can tell by temperature if there is global warming - it will be to late to make a difference.

But of course - politics, politics, politics.

All the people who deny global warming - are like the NC legislature who want to deny any scientific data that says the coastline will rise by 36+ inches. Pure Politics. Stick your head in the sand you PDFs.

It takes a super-computer working for 18 days to figure out all the math equations used to predict the weather.

The models for long term climate change are even more complex with vast amount of observed data compiled from thousands of places on the globe over last 50 years. There are clues from archeology, geology, outer space, physics the chemical composition of the earth, ice sheves, ocean. More than half a dozen highly complex scientific disciplines come together to contribute to the model.

It is a hugely complex subject and while there is much that is not known and the models are still evolving (themore the data the better the model) but whatever is known at this stage is very well documented and peer reviewed and makes the bedrock of climatology.

It continually amazes me that people who are barely middle school pass or graduates in disciplines like journalism or fine arts consider themselves well equipped to have an opinion on this hugely complex subject often second guessing or even outright denying the collective wisdom of world's scientist simply because the political party they belong to has decided to debunk the science as it hurts the interest of their financial and political base.

The ridiculousness of this would have been comic had the effects of their continued stupidity not had the potential to change life as we know it on this planet.

NYC schools are still in session?!? THATS ridiculous. I know NYC parents have a high interest in this subsidized-babysitting since moms no longer stay at home and NYC is a horrible place to raise a child (no fields, woods, streams to explore or fireflies to catch on long idyllic summer days / nights). But our forefathers didnt just let kids out during the summer to help with the farming. It was also because it was HOT. Kids cooped up, miserable and hot, sitting and trying to learn, is a horrible combination. Shorter school years and FULL TIME moms is the answer to our societal problems with an increasingly mentally ill and dysfunctional population of children. Kids need moms and plenty of time to independently explore the world, even if it is in the confines of their homes with coloring books, the radio, and what have you.

Well, I didn't go to the comments section, expecting to have to mention any of this. On the other hand, I didn't expect an advisory about a few days REGIONAL warming, to be turned into global warming arguments. And meanwhile, as we had a mild winter (which was actually rather welcome), Europe had things colder then normal from many accounts. When looking at things on a global scale, one has to average things, and not take temps in 1 area, or one country as somehow indicative of the entire globe. Hell we haven't even had meteorology as a profession for all that long (we're talking centuries here), and the planet is some 4.5 billion years old. In (and the asto-phycisists would call it deep time), the amount of time we had meteorology is a drop in the bucket...

One thing is certain, before the last ice age, and when the dinosaurs were walking the Earth, things didn't get all out of hand, with the world coming to an end. Not saying we'd feel comfortable with the same temps as the dinos, but.... Ice core samples, which can go a lot further back then the last few hundred years (and would be far less anectdotal then just looking at the thermometer outside one's window and making global assumptions from it) would tell more then knee jerk reactions from "it's hot HERE TODAY, and therefore", as if someone's own personal experience has to be indicative of the entire world for time to come :o Last I heard, at the end of the last ice age, and prior to the "mini-ice age" within the last 2000 years, the Earth was on average a few degrees C warmer then now. Round abouts 5000-9000 years ago....

Another matter, the heat we get up here, isn't the same as heat everywhere. I'm in Jersey now, though lived in Albuquerque, NM for 11 years. 106 degrees in New Mexico was more comfortable then 95 degrees in Jersey, due to the differences in humidity. Hot and dry, is less miserable then the wet, sticky kind of heat one gets when high humidity is added to the mix... I wouldn't mind 10 degrees warmer as much (also knowing we all had a/c out there, even schools), if it meant dispensing with the humidity. Swamp coolers (which were common out there), wouldn't even work here, due to the near 90% relative humidity... I've experienced, and lived in both...

tbh, I'll be glad when this passes. We also had the a/c break down at the local gym I go to. When it's high 80s to lower 90s outside, warmer indoors (without a/c), and one's talking about getting onto cardio machines, and raising the heart rate, then going to do some weight lifting, not exactly pleasant. They said they're getting it fixed today, I hope they do. Today was 95, and tomarrow is supposed to be 98 degrees (inside will be hotter if they don't have it fixed, not much air flow through the front door, and a lot of people/body heat... There's also a pizza place right on the other side of the wall (neighboring business) that has all those pizza ovens...

I'm exactly the opposite Will. I'll take winter in New England over the heat/humidity of down south in the summer.

When it hits 90 in Boston on Christmas Day, then I might be convinced of Global Warming. Not during the summer.

In the 70's they were telling us we were on the verge of an ice age. Now it's global warming. God only knows what it will be in 20yrs.

The whole global warming debate really has laid bare the partisan politics and ability by those with such a motive to manufacture whatever proof is needed to make their case. Which side am I talking about? Well, logically speaking, at least one side or perhaps both. They cannot both be right, but it is entirely possible for both sides to be wrong.

We just need to deregulate the industries that create most of the pollution so they can give us a few jobs for a few years. That'll fix everything!

          .

And Will, how about we build a heat exchanger between PA and AZ?

Then we could build a water pipe between AZ and the mid-west to catch their water runoff.

Truth be told, although there are industries that add to pollution greatly I think the real cause in the end is over population. Yes cars dont help, but the issue is there is a hell of alot more people doing it so to speak. However since it is apparently wrong to tell people that they should not keep having kids (I know two families that have 10 children each, catholic families, but still) there is no real solution except to try and lower emissions and pollution with whatever means you can find.

In the upper mid west this is about our 14th day of near 100 degree heat since the first of the year. 10 of them came before June, heck 10 of them came before May. Typically, we're unusual if we have 14 all summer. And the summer hasn't even started.

All of the crops are at least a month ahead. People's yards look as if it's late July instead of late June.

We had one month of semi cold weather this winter and almost no snow.

I'm not republican, and believe we have some global warming. But I'm curious how you associate a hot day, as it normally is this time of year, with global warming. Its just hot out.

It's quite funny that this is news. Much of the country has already seen high 90's for a week now. But once the news studios in New York are about to get it, it suddenly becomes news.

I totally agree! Does it take the northeast to officially mark the start of summer? We've beeen in the 90s for a good while here in Missouri. And just think about the west who have already seen triple digits. I don't get it

Up here in Seattle we've had a ridiculously cool spring. Normally we should have been in the low 70's for weeks, but we've been hitting low to mid 60's instead. It's supposed to be warm today and tomorrow (74), but then it's back to mid sixties for another week before we finally get into 70's weather. July so far looks like a mix of low 70's to low 80's on a few days. I can't complain too much, though. Every weekend in May was pretty nice though, and as anyone who has spent time in Seattle can tell you, the way weekends work here is it usually clouds up on Friday and clears Monday afternoon. Trouble is we get all that cool marine air coming from the west, and it only warms up when warm air comes from the east over the mountains (Eastern Washington has a more desert-like feel to it and often is in the 90's or low 100's. It's great to go out and feel the hot dry air, so soothing).

Let's see...it's cooler in Seattle than it should be, but I hesitate to whine about it. The rest of the country seems to have steam baths, blizzards, hurricanes, tornados, floods, fire ants, snakes...

Yah, I'll just be quiet and enjoy a bit of damp. Good for the complexion.

More global warming. Just like al grore said. Record heat & temperatures. Mr grover, the gop, & the rushbo still do not believe in science or technology, the practical application of science. They don't believe in climate science, weather prediction nor climate modeling. Even though the latest climate computer is capable of computing the temperature or every grain of sand on every beach in the world, minute by minute. No. No. Mr grover, the gop, & the rushbo will tell you that co2 is not related to global temperatures.

But i tell you, in the world of business, science and technology is where the action is. The battle between google & apple. Apple operating system or android. Mr grover, the gop, & the rusbho & foxnews.com which owns the dow will tell you that these companies are irrelevant to this country's economy.

Google and apple are all about science & technology. Apple is the world's largest company but still not included in the dow 30 industrials. Neither is google. And why. The dow index would be 1,500 pts higher if they were. Science and technology is bunk say mr grover, the gop, and the rushbo & fox news that owns the dow index. I heard rushbo telling his minions about how time after time science & technology has lead the country astray.

I don't know. But i used my gps yesterday a lot. It got me around from one place to another to another to another. To places i have never been before. I swear it works. Not perfect but good enough. And the real time traffic feature helps too. Temporary road closures, traffic jams, traffic slowdowns, and alternate routes all there. I usually get to my destination about a minute or two from the gps's estimated time of arrival. Science & technology works for me.

And it's not Summer until tomorrow. Then "Summer' here runs right through 'til the middle of October. Gadzooks I say!!

It does exist. Latest NOAA data: "The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for May was second warmest on record for May, behind 2010, at 59.79°F (15.46°C) or 1.19°F (0.66°C) above the 20th century average." So 2010 and 2012 had the two warmest months of May ever (and 2011, although slightly cooler, was the warmest La Nina year). 2010 also tied the global record for a complete year. See a pattern here?

No...it is too short a period to show any kind of trend. And what does La Nina have to do with warming?

Zero days without sunspots this year, Eric H would hang Edward Maunder if he were still alive and chuckle while he dangled. He was not raised with science(Eric), a man over a century ago knew the influences of the sun. Native and acient man where more evolved than Eric, and knew the sun had an effect on Earth temperatures going back thousands of years. Eric only bnrings his 20-30 yearsexperiance into play instead of thousands of years of human knowledge. Reminds of a guy I met in Saudi Arabia in the 90's that thought Bush 1 and Saddam were in cahoots together and knew the deal. I said, "All the world leaders where tricked, except you and you have the answer, why aren't you in charge, you have all the answers".Eric is the same bufoon.

Evidently "fuat gary" hasn't checked the NASA data of the sun's energy output since the 1970s, as measured from space. The fact is, it hasn't varied by more than about 0.1% during that time period, while global temperatures have increased by more than 1 deg F. If you want to pick someone to argue with about that fact, then try contacting NASA directly.

And La Nina does have a lot to do with atmospheric warming, because it transfers heat from the atmosphere to the oceans. It's well-documented that La Nina years are normally cooler.

Gets hot in the East and the poor liberals there have a cow. It's summer stupid! If I rightly remember in all my 68 years, summers were always hot and winters were cold. So far nothing's changed as to the seasons as they're called. Let me see, there's Winter(cold),Spring(warming),Summer(hot),Autumn(cooling). The libs only have one season,"global warming" as taught by Al Gore,Nobel Prize recipient for being exceptionally stupid. Wished I'd been born with an I.Q. of 2,then I could've gotten a Nobel Prize, the money's really good. Anyway, out here in Glitter Gulch Las Vegas we're up to 110 degrees so far and it feels great. The pool at my apartment complex is refreshing and so is a can of Bud. I've a great tan, feel just fine after an afternoon of frying my brain, plus the Bud tastes better than water. The killer in the East is the humidity and I'll grant that as worse at times but then you sweat like a pig which keeps the weight off better than dry desert heat. That has to be healthy, right?

This is a little too over dramatic. Two days of mid to high 90's? Cooling Stations? I live in Texas where we set records on how many days in a row that we are above 100 degrees. Try living down here for a week. We don't really have winters and hardly even springs. It's just hot all the damn time here! But if the 90's are too hot for you to handle, drink plenty of water and stay indoors away from the sun.

Let me get this straight. The right says there's no GW because areas are cooler and the left says that's regional, not global. The left says it's @!$%#ing hot in the NE U.S. and it's GW, not regional. Maybe we need a Dem./Repub dictionary. And for the record, it's still too damn cool in SW Wa.

And that map, it looks like it's designed to make the point of the writer, not an accurate depiction of colors from what I usually see. Bright yellow for 60's, really?

I find it really amazing that people do not believe that humans can have an effect on climate change. I assume that nature always had in mind that there would be billions pf people and millions of cars, factories etc. you get the picture. Of course none of this could effect the climate. When they talk about Global Warming they are not talking about today, tomorrow or even next year but in the future, please people learn things be educated.

That would be especially true for you, getting educated that is, because you seem to know little about science. There is still no causal link that has been established to prove that humans cause climate change, let alone that humans can do anything about it.

Phoenix area, cold water comes out of the tap over 100 degrees, nights cool to the upper 80's or mid 90's. Nothing moves in the heat of the day, no wind or breezes, no people, animals or even birds. Rolling down the window of the car feels like standing in front of a just opened oven, no relief. When (if) it rains we all run outside and marvel at water falling from the sky, lol. The only outside activity that is not life threatening is to get into a pool or lake. Family circumstances keep me here but this place is not fit for human habitation during the summer.

Exactly Kathryn. Back around the 14th century there were major volcano eruptions all over the world creating an ash cloud that caused drops in temps worldwide. This lasted for about 400yrs. There was actually snow in June in New England in 18something...I forget the actual year.

The "Mini Ice age" lasted till around 1850 or so. Some scientist actually said that the end was caused by "Global Warming" even though the 'Industrial revolution" had only been going on at that time around 50-75yrs. The "industrial revolution" was a very localized phenomenon at that time affecting mainly the northeast of America and western Europe.

Climate change is a natural process. Some periods are hotter than others, some colder. While humans have some affect on this, to say that we are the "Cause" is just all too much ego and our own sense of self importance in the overall scheme of things.

Call me a dumba$$ all you enlightened ones, but it gets hot in the summer. So instead of pointing fingers and mumbling like a broken record - "Its climate change you deniers!" - why don't you just scurry off and fix it. The rest of us are tired of your incessant whining and hand-wringing and "I told you sos."
