911 call from Rodney King's fiancee: 'He's at the bottom of the swimming pool'

TODAY's Natalie Morales listens to the frantic call made by Rodney King's fiancee after she discovered his body in a pool.

Rialto, Calif., police released recordings on Tuesday of the 911 call made by Rodney King’s fiancée Sunday morning, when she found the 47- year-old at the bottom of their backyard swimming pool.

Cynthia Kelley can be heard crying throughout the five minute, 15 second-long phone call, which was made at about 5:30 a.m. PT on June 17.

Kelley: “Rodney King, the guy that got beat by the police.”

Dispatcher: “OK. How old is he?”

Kelley: “He’s 47 years old. He’s not moving; he’s at the bottom of the swimming pool.”

Dispatcher: “Is he out now of the pool or is he still in the pool?”

Kelley: “I was sleeping, all of a sudden I heard something fall like the table and then I looked over and then I went to find him and he’s at the bottom of the swimming pool. He’s still there. Please hurry up.”

The dispatcher asks Kelley if she is able to retrieve King, but Kelley says she can’t swim.

Rialto police officers pulled King from the swimming pool and tried to resuscitate him. King was pronounced dead at the hospital about 45 minutes after the 911 call was made.

Officials found no signs of trauma or traces of blood on the concrete near King’s swimming pool. While they are investigating his death as an accidental drowning, police said they are looking into all possible leads.

An official cause of death was deferred Monday by coroner’s officials, claiming more toxicological tests were needed. The results are expected within six to eight weeks.

Toxicology tests ordered in Rodney King's death

King was in the water three to four minutes between the time his fiancée called 911 and when officers pulled him from the water, Capt. Randy De Anda said Monday.

The world first saw King as a grainy image being beaten by police officers at the end of a 1991 pursuit on a Southern California freeway, an event videotaped by George Holliday, whose residence looked out to the freeway.

Riots broke out in Los Angeles when three of the officers involved were acquitted and another officer's case was declared a mistrial.

One of the most violent images of the riots was the beating of trucker Reginald Denny. King told NBC4 the Denny attack triggered memories of his own beating.

"I could feel that brick hit his head," King said. "I could hear it, and I could also feel it. I said to myself, 'Oh, my God.'"

Fifty-three people were killed in the LA riots, during which King asked during a news conference, "Can we all just get along?"

"I want to be remembered as the one who always tried to keep it together," King told NBC in an interview in April of this year.

King was awarded $3.8 million in a civil case, but that was spent on a record label and other failed ventures. He resurfaced on the show "Celebrity Rehab" and sparred in boxing matches.

He recently finished a book, "The Riot Within: From Rebellion to Redemption." In the book, King wrote about watching as Los Angeles was torn apart.

While speeding, Rodney didn't stop when a California Highway Patrol unit directed him to pull over on the freeway!

He'd been drinking!

He was out on parole for a robbery conviction!

He led law enforcement on the ground and helicopter on a high-speed chase along a San Fernando freeway and surface streets endangering lives!

His two passengers complied with police and were taken into custody!

King initially taunted police and resisted arrest!

The police went way overboard and beat the shiiit out of him!

So Rodney was no saint ... in fact ... he was as a$$hole ...

At the bottom of the pool does not bother me!

How fitting that this POS end up at the bottom of a pool. Just like a turd in the toilet bowl ! Now let's flush and move on to more important issues like unemployment, the economy and the millions of people in this country who are hungry.

Nice fiance to leave him at the bottom of the pool. She said she heard the splash, so there was time to save him, but she wasn't having any part of that. Yes, I realize the article said she can't swim, but she could have tried something. D*mn. If no one in that house can swim, why have a freaking pool? No common sense

Rodney King was an AVID swimmer and the house was his.....ergo the pool, myspellchecker and the rest of you know nothing before posting people. Why do you say Rodney King is a POS WCF1957 and 17 of your fellow whatevers? Did any of you know him personally to call him out of his name like that. Maybe the LAPD are your buddies. That sounds more like it. None of you probably would have made it through the savage beating that he went through at the hands of LA's not so freaking finest. So, does taking a unwarranted beating within an inch of his life make him a POS? I think not. Maybe you should look in the mirror, what do you see? I could tell you but then I'd be banned. Get some knowledge before posting or, better yet, just get some knowledge period!

sandie, how many times had good ole innocent rodney been arrested prior to the incident? and how many times after? and tell me about his drug use and what all drugs he was on at the time of the incident...i do realize that in a black person's mind, getting arrested multiple times and doing drugs is just another day in the hood but for most civil people, that equates to POS.

as for the savage beating....you mean the little ticklefest compared to what reginald denny received? oh but reginald deserved it right? i mean afterall, he was guilty of being white. you are a friggin idiot.

sweetie, it is you who needs to gain some knowledge before posting....wow, amazing how blacks will support blacks regardless of the crime! attitudes such as yours ARE the reason racism still exists.

callingit.....get back on your meds immediately. I NEVER said ANYTHING about Reginald Denny and I CERTAINLY NEVER said he deserved what happened to him during the riots. YOU, on the other hand, repeatedly state that Rodney King deserved the beating he got at the hands of the POLICE, no less. Probably, wherever you live, the police regularly beat up people, especially black people. However, even you must realize that what happened to Rodney King was wrong because those idiot cops were tried in a court of law. I do realize that in your mind, you have a serious issue with black people. Amazing how bigots are all the same under their hoods. Why don't you just go to your regularly scheduled neigborhood Klan meeting. Your buds are waiting on you.

yes, you are correct, those cops were tried in court...and acquitted....have you not been paying attention? you've had 20+ yrs to understand this! put down the crack pipe....know what i'm sayin' yo?

You have GOT to quit doing that meth. You have posted racist, bigoted ravings regarding Rodney King and black people in general, throughout this thread and others, and apparently due to that ice (meth), you somehow think that you are an equal opportunity racist. There ARE no green, yellow, or polka dotted drugged out POS. You have a problem with people who are black. Of course I know you were just trying (woefully) to be somewhat PC by adding in those non-human colors because the only ones you care about are white and green. White because you are afraid now that you all are no longer the majority race in America and green because you do not have as much as Rodney King was awarded due to a beating from racist cops who, BTW went to trial a second time and got what? I'll give you a clue.....IT WASN'T AN ACQUITTAL. Rodney King got paidbecause he got beat up by some bully, racist cops who got caught in the act of being their true selves. They were on the clock and got caught doing something that they should not have been doing, case closed. Stop being mad because Rodney King had more money than you'll ever see in your lifetime! Or go get your a$$ whupped by some cops and sue them and the town they work in. Go find you genitals and try being a man. If you are one to begin with. If you are a female, well I'm not sure what would help you. Either way, keep telling yourself, meth is bad......meth is bad......meth is bad. Oh, and if you need a discount on some sheets, I know just where you can go. Also, stop voting for you own posts. HAHAHAHAHA

So the fiance just left him there? The thought process being that making a phone call and waiting for the police to come was going to save him? What if it would have been her child ? Horrible situation, but let this be a lessen in parenting. Teach your children to swim. You make them wear a seatbelt and look both ways before crossing the street. Afterall, swimming is just a common sense instinctive reaction to the alternative.

Poor Rodney King... the only thing worse he could have done for the "African-American community" is have left a half-eaten Watermelon and some friend chicken on a nearby table before drowning.

Thanks, Rodney, for solidifying almost all popular stereotypes people have about black people.

What good have you done for the African-American community? Rodney King didn't have any obligation to represent black people. He never asked to become famous, @!$%# just happened. Yeah it would have been nice if he had turned his life around and become more of a model citizen, but this is the real world where addicts stay addicts. If he was parading himself around like a civil rights leader then your criticism might be more relevant. This is simply a tragedy.

I was brought up with strict manners. One of them was, when a cop ask you to stop. You Stop. The guy caused a riot, and they are strying to make a hero out of him? @ LoveAngel - No, Casey Anthony did not receive justice and she did kill her baby. The difference, and why your point is irrelevant, is that white people are fuming that Casey Anthony got away with murder. The black community, apparently, uses race while deciding justice (OJ split screen at decision time). White people demand justice regardless of race. Black people are racist and loved, as an entire group, the fact that OJ was found innocent while we all 'knew' he was guilty. Big difference and why we get the good jobs and ya'll are custodians.

Rodney King had nothing to do with the riots. Any person with any shred of decency would not use "karma" for somebody dying. I am truly incensed with this comment of yours. Are you even a human being!!!! The man is now dead which seems to satisfy a lot of the posters here which is sad. Why continue kicking someone when they are down and gone. Everyone I guess has an opinion on this and that is fine but the vulgar comments are just not necessary. I live in Canada so I know I really don't understand racism like most people here so I wont comment on that but for people to say his beating was justified and he got what he deserved from the cops is unbelievable to me. There is no justification for what those cops did to him - none and I am willing to believe that that beating just furthered his addiction to a point where mentally he was in a deep hole and couldn't get out of it. If anyone doesn't understand addiction and alcoholism then they should just keep their mouths shut. I saw Dr. Drew's Rehab show and Rodney really struggled to get sober and he admitted he was no angel and just wanted to live a normal life free of alcohol but obviously hard as he tried and as far as he came he just couldn't stop drinking completely. And I believe that is what killed him in a way cause his fiancee said he drank all day Saturday and an alcoholic cannot and must not have even so much as one drink and he said *I don't drink as much as I did* when interviewed and that told me he couldn't get sober. This is a sad story and a man has died way too young and if you cant show compassion, at least let him RIP. He more than paid the price for his part in all of this and in the end he suffered the consequences. So when callinglikeitis says he shouldn't have been beaten - he should have been shot he is no better than Rodney King - in fact he is much much worse. Yes I am from Canada and we are soft on crime and dont have the death penalty and to some extent I agree but people here don't jump right into a story screaming racism and politics when neither applies in most cases. Racism does apply here but certainly not politics and no one deserves to be beaten to a pulp or shot unless a jury decides the case and it warrants death. I know first hand how alcoholics struggle to get sober and I believe the odds are 2 or 3 out of 10 people will be successful and I am grateful that my son is at 33 and has his life ahead of him but he was no angel either he was sick though with a disease called alcoholism. You can believe it or not I don't care but leave this man to RIP.

dear shar....yes, you are entitlted to your opinion and it is welcomed. however, you obviously are not aware of many details around this issue...nor are you aware of why rodney was awarded millions of $ (it was based SOLELY on his race).

for your knowledge, this POS was not an alcoholic at the time of the incident....he became such after he was given the riches from the tax paying public. i mean, what else would a career criminal do other than more drugs and booze when he became filthy rich? stop trying to blame something else and for once, let the blame lie on the individual who committed the crime. this "it isn't my fault" bullsh*t disgusts me. I can just hear it now " yeah, i raped and killed that 5yr old because i had a bud light an hour ago".... so i guess to you, that is a palatable excuse? do you also say RIP for hitler since he was a meth addict? see how ridiculous that sounds?

i can agree with you that alcoholism is a horrible "disease" and it would be great to eliminate all such nasty diseases...which leads back to my comment of why he should have been shot....to eliminate one more disease from the world.

fools like you who are soft on crime are the reason that crime is propagating to such extremes. criminals should be punished not rewarded millions...but what you need to understand is, he was rewarded this money NOT because of the beating but because of his race. simple as that.

i truly feel for you in dealing with your alcoholic son and hope the best for him...

Those would be undocumented illegals, possibly given amnesty from deportation. You'll never find them to sue them.

I blame all those liberals that prohibited blacks from learning to swim. I guess they felt, deep down, that the drownings would solve "their" problem!

I agree. When I read what she said I thought it was kind of odd. What was the noise she heard? A person falling in a pool and a table falling don't sound anything alike. The article said he was in the pool 3-4 minutes before police pulled him out. So did he fall in right before she called 911 then? And if he did, was he practically dead already when he hit the water? I mean if he somehow went unconscious, one would think that when he hit the water it would snap him awake. Lots of questions.

                @Concerned Citizen (?)

You would have to know the history of white people's bigotry with regard to public swimming pools back in the day to know why many black people did not learn to swim but hey, why be educated when it is just so darn easy to PWKWTFYATA (posting without knowing WTF you are talking about). This "policy" of not "allowing" black people to swim in "public" swimming pools lasted well into the 1960's and there was an incident within the past 2 or 3 years, I believe it was in Philadelphia, of a club that was known to let different organizations use their pool but balked when black kids wanted to use it.

It was Bush's fault. We need more pool regulations. We need to outlaw pools. I think we need to look into why it took 45 minutes to pronounce him dead, I'm sure if he were white it would have only taken 30 minutes. I think the President should get involved in this, and make it a priority, before his next golf game.
