Subscribe to RSSA girl detained in a raid of a group of suspected illegal immigrants in Maricopa County, Ariz., last week is a 5-year-old who left El Salvador to try to reach relatives in California, NBC News has learned.
The girl was traveling with strangers as part of a smuggling group, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Agents say none of the 15 adults caught with her in a van knew who she was, or where her parents might be.
The group was arrested Friday night at an undisclosed location in northern Maricopa County.
"It was part of a human-smuggling investigation that we've been investigating throughout the Valley," sheriff’s spokesman Chris Hegstrom told azcentral.com.
The girl was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which said it transferred her to the custody of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Refugee Resettlement.
The girl's first name is Rosa and she is now in the care of a faith-based social-service organization, Health and Human Services sources told NBC News on Thursday.
Most of the other suspected illegal immigrants, who claimed to be from Mexico, were booked into jail, the Sheriff’s Office said. They were on their way to destinations in to New York, New Jersey, Kansas, Texas, California, Connecticut and Kentucky and told authorities they paid between $300 and $3,500 to be smuggled across the border, KPHO-TV reported.
"We enforce the human-smuggling laws here," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the no-nonsense lawman known for his get-tough efforts to combat illegal immigration. "Every chance I can get to take action on my own without turning them over to ICE, I do. Especially with the new policy the president has," he was quoted as saying by azcentral.com.
President Obama announced a new policy that will allow some illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to remain in the country and to obtain work permits. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
Three men in the arrested group were turned over to ICE and deported to Mexico, ICE officials in Arizona said.
It’s not uncommon for unaccompanied children to be found among groups of illegal aliens crossing the Arizona border from Mexico.
ICE officials in Phoenix said they referred have referred more than 1,600 unaccompanied alien juveniles to Health and Human Services this fiscal year for placement in juvenile shelters.
The arrests announced by Arpaio’s office came after President Barack Obama introduced a policy that halts the deportation of some young people brought to the United States illegally by their parents.
Under the new guidelines, illegal immigrants younger than age 30 can apply to stay provided they were younger than 16 when they arrived in the U.S., have lived here for at least five years and have no criminal record. They also must be students, a high-school graduate, have a GED diploma or have been honorably discharged from the military or Coast Guard.

I am not for illegals at all but that must have been really frightening for a 5 year old to be traveling all alone.

Last time I checked, Jesus instructed us to treat ALL men and women as equals, and to do whatever possible to help those in need. Not sure what your question has to do with the topic of abandoning a child to strangers to participate in an illegal activity. I am fairly certain her parents/relatives are "Christians" ... most likely good Catholics. Why not ask them how that fits in their belief system?
Can anyone with common sense believe a 5yr old made it all the way from El Savador by herself? The Coyote knows and knows who she was to be turned over to. Maybe a little interogation would help refresh their memories. More likely ICE couldn't identify the Coyote.

Have you made the initial moves to adopt her, give her a home, food, and an education? If you really believe it, I am sure you are already working on it. Or, do you just want to talk about what others should do, while you sit and do nothing but type?

For another - someone in that van knows who she is. They are just afraid to say. I highly doubt she made it ALL the way by herself.
When all those people who consider themselves "good Christians" start footing the bill for all the lost children from 3rd world countries to be shipped here and put into an already strained foster system THEN they can start telling me how to feel about the matter!
I shouldn't have to be shamed simply because there are plenty of people in this country that could use the same charity and opportunity who ARE paying taxes and giving something back to the gov't. There are also plenty of people in the countries that are far worse off than Mexico & El Salvador that have been waiting years for Visas or Green cards, yet have to continue to wait while we put law breakers through the express line. I feel more sorry for them than the anchor children that are getting in-state tuition and automatic work permits. And all their parents had to do was break the law by sneaking, steal my social security number and ruining my credit, all while I paid for their kid's public education....... yeah I feel like such a terrible person for not wanting reward that kind of behavior!!!

I understand that the problem now is the influx of illegal immigration by the Latinos and Asians, but not too long ago the US had an influx of a variety of people that were not quite acceptable to the current populace at the time, i.e. Eastern Europeans, Italians, etc. and I would think that it would have frustrated you, if you lived at the time, for someone to blame you for all the immigrants that were coming into this country and telling you that you needed to fix Poland's problems or Italy's problems. I personally have nothing to fix in Mexico or Central America, as I, nor many of my counterparts who share my ethnicity, were not born in these countries, therefore fixing their problems in out of our hands, and quite frankly, not our problem. I will also tell you this, there are many Hispanics/Latinos who do not turn a blind eye on the immigration issue and believe that there needs to be reform on the current immigration laws. I understand why these people are coming to the US, it is so much better here than in their country, but do I think it is right for them to come here without being invited or given permission, no I do not.

I agree, I think someone knows who this little girl's parents are and just don't want to squeal. There are dna tests, and it shouldn't be too hard to get a sample (even voluntarily) from the girl and then start watching for matching dna show up. Yes, it might take awhile but then again it might be someone closeby.

The scenario I'm picturing is that the little girl's parents came here first to get settled, and then sent for her. Perhaps she came here with a relative or friend, or perhaps the people she stayed behind with sent her with someone they trusted.

I agree about the separation of church and state, though. Tax money should not be siphoned off to faith-based organizations if there is a system already in place to care for the unfortunate.
Wherever Rosa lands, however, she is a child. She must be scared and she must be sad. I just hope that whoever has her will treat her with love and with respect.

There are PLENTY of LEGAL immigrants in the USA. They have LEGAL JOBS. They are here on various forms of visa from tourist/student to Green Card applicant to become LEGAL citizens. She is an unaccompanied minor who needs to be returned to the El Salvador Government.
If her parents are here they need to face the legal system. Child Welfare Services in CA or AZ need to become involved and they need to be PROSECUTED for child endangerment. If they can go after Michael Jackson on someones accusations these "parents" can be prosecuted on the much greater evidence of not being present while their child is out in the middle of nowhere participating in an ILLEGAL activity. Yes they deserve their day in court. Innocent until proven Guilty. There is little question about the Guilt but go through all the legal motions. Once they are convicted they can either serve their time or be immediately deported. They will be guilt of a significant crime and thus not part of the now "protected" class because of the crime. The 5 year old has just arrived. Has not been here 5 years, is NOT enrolled in school (and should not be without her parents).

Half of the American people have been bamboozled by the right wing of the Republican party with the help of rich corporatists who bankroll that right wing in return for policies that benefit them.
That half is the group that has their britches in a wad over things like birth control and illegal immigration but who have no problems at all with the death penalty or giving up basic American rights.
The other half of the American people believe that our country became great on the backs of immigrants. Most of us are descended from those immigrants. They are looking for their country to be fair, to be honest and to be responsible.
That half wants all Americans to have access to quality health care, to have access to quality education, to have the opportunity to make a living wage and to retire securely.
Obama is doing the best he can with what he inherited. It's not about pointing the finger -- it's more about "the buck stops here" as Harry Truman said. Eight years of the Bush fiasco was bad enough, but our government has been for years embroiled in those hypocritical activities, and I am not at all sure that any President could drop them cold turkey.
But at least Obama is going in the right direction. A surefire way to tell is that there are more than a few liberals who think he's sold out to the right-wingers -- and a substantial number of right-wingers who call him a socialist.
I think perhaps you might consider waking up and tending to your own head... It would be tragic for our country if Romney got elected. If you're fed up with BS from the Democrats, just see what happens if the Republicans are given the opportunity to take over!

You also need a Birth Certificate and a Photo ID to enlist. At least it was that way in 1962 when I enlisted.
Personally i think an honorable discharge should entitle a person to citizenship. If they were willing to fight and die for this country they aren't undocumented aliens they are patriots.
Actually, military service is one of the legitimate paths to citizenship that is available for legal immigration into this country. The US does employ the services of non-citizens in the military although they cannot normally serve in a function requiring a security clearance.

If you consider ignoring the law a "value" then guilty as charged. If her parents are here they need charged with child endangerment or abandonment. Sentenced to prison and when they are done serving their time here sent back to never return to the USA as they are felons.
I happen to have fantastic values, thank you. Like I would never put any of my three children in a vehicle or plane and send them somewhere alone and just wish them the best. Ya, I take care of my children. The point here is, illegal, I dont give a crap how old. It is not this poor childs fault, but it still has to be handled correctly. If this country doesnt start putting it's foot down, this will continue to happen. Laws are there to be obeyed. If you do not like the laws of this country, than please leave. There is no way a 5 year old is sent to her relatives in the United States with out another family member along with her. This child belongs to some one in El Salvador. We have no right keeping her here in the United States and should be immediately
returned to her country. She is just a child. Have her parents or who ever come forward and prove they are her relatives and then send them all back to El Salvador. As for the rest of the illegal’s what makes the authorities in the United States believe any were being smuggled here and not part of the prostitution ring? Charge them all!

I don't know if it a prostitution ring or not, but I will tell you that it does happen, a lot. Parents who are already here will pay a smuggler to have their small children smuggled up to the US one at a time. You wonder where do they get the money, from working for companies that will hire illegal immigrants with fraudulent papers. Usually it starts with one parent coming up, then another parent, then a child, etc. I don't know exactly what is going on down south as I don't live there, but we all know the situation is bad. These countries who are allowing their citizens to venture north need to fix their problems and take care of their people. I can't believe these governments are not embarrassed at the fact that their own people don't want to live in their country, because it is so messed up, and prefer to risk their lives going to a country were there is absolutely no certainty. Why doesn't the US govt. tell the presidents of these countries to clean up their act and take care of their people. And for those of you who will state that the US is far from perfect, I know that the US has tons of problems, but I don't hear any country complaining about all the US illegals that are flooding into their country and causing problems. We may have our problems, but I don't hear of people running to get out, as it is still way better here than it is in many countries, hence the fact that we have so many people trying to get in illegally, not legally like so many others.
kiwi75, Good points. May I also add that illegals cross into Mexico from countries south, and the Mexican government isn't thrilled with them, and treats them the way that they don't want their citizens that are illegals in the U.S. treated. Sheer hypocrisy.
wow this is very sad what do you do when you have that many young childern with pretty much no parents dropped in your state what happens they take care of them ? how do you find their relitives / seems alomost impossible. it's a continue drain on our society but yet it's the right thing to do to take care of them at what age do you draw the line very sad story

This is absolutely terrible. If true, advocats make it sound like mothers are sneaking in with children clinging to them which clearly they are not (again if this story is true). More risks and child endangerment to sneak very young children into the country to become US citizens.
