Salvador Dali's painting, "Cartel de Don Juan Tenorio," which was stolen from a New York art gallery on June 19.

The 1949 painting, known as "Cartel de Don Juan Tenorio," appears to have been stolen on Tuesday from The Venus Over Manhattan gallery on Madison Avenue, police sources said.

Surveillance cameras show a man wearing a dark shirt with white polka dots enter the gallery with a black cloth bag, police sources said. He is later seen on cameras leaving the gallery with the painting.

The New York Daily News reported that the man took an elevator from the third floor onto street level and fled down 77th Street.

The painting was included in a display with other paintings as part of an exhibit at the gallery, which opened in May of this year, at 980 Madison Avenue between 76th and 77th Streets.

The painting looks like a Deli Sandwich... Corned beef on Rye, with a dob of potato salad.

IMO, the " artwork " looks like a waste-can liner that has been used.

Dont these Gallerys have security Guards or Administration present at all times watching People? Earlier this week the guy goes in a spray paints a Picasso and now this and they walk out untouched?

How about instead of instantly criticizing a piece of art because it doesn't look pretty, you try to actually understand what it's about. That's what makes it fine art...substance. You have to make an effort to learn something and understand the context. "Cartel" in this case means poster or advertisement. In the 1950's, Dali designed the costumes and sets for a production of Don Juan, in which one of the characters is a dead man, represented by a skull, who invites a naive youth to dinner. The play is full of themes about death and morality, so think about it from that perspective. The play is a huge part of Spanish culture and this painting is a piece of history and it's a rare work of art by a master. So yeah, it's pretty valuable, even though you may not want to hang it over your mantle next to your Kinkade print.

So well put. I hate Kinkade too. I think he's the Danielle Steele of art.

An Interesting painting is on that you keep looking at and trying to understand, you know you have succeeded if you also keep looking and trying to understand it after painting it. If you can see into the artists soul you are partway there. Many of my peices have been compared to Dali, but I won't get the recognition or that much money till I no longer can use them. Invest in Art.

The only thing I understand after looking at that painting, is, it fraking sucks. It's a whole new level of suck. There is a reason there was no alarm system, and johnny checker-dots was able to walk out of the place. They wanted that piece of crap "Stolen". If that crap is "Art", then Bob Ross is GOD.

I beg to differ. An Interesting painting is one in which the Artist clearly and concisely relates his vision or concept to the observer.

If the Viewer of the work has to guess the meaning or make up his own meaning then the artist has related absolutely nothing at all.

It's ignorance of true fine art that has allowed no talents like Picasso to proliferate under the ruse of impressionism as some kind of art, which is actually no more art than a child’s scribble or finger paint.

The above being said. Salvador Dali actually did do great work. Unfortunately though, this work mentioned here was actually one of number Dali did tongue in cheek to evidence to his friends just how gullible the art consuming public had become in his time.

There's a lot of weird comments on here. Sounds like they're made by children. My thoughts are that if these thefts and vandalism don't stop, art is going to be taken away from the public. Whether you like the art or not is irrelevant. Art is out on public view for us, art worth millions and millions of dollars. It's a public trust, and it's a wonderful thing to be able to view this art up close. If people stop appreciating this fact, the treasure is going to be taken away from us, and we are not going to be able to view original works of art anymore because the owners are not going to be able to trust us.

Dali painted much better pieces than that.

                            Why is your moniker artattacker?

I user the handle Artattacker because some of my paintings are a bit on the violent side. I am a non violent person since 1967 and that is my way of expressing myself and letting my angst out.

Dali's aren't worth much in my book...no guarantee he artist did more than sign a blank canvas on many of his works, so $150,000? meh...
