Donations for bullied bus monitor soar past $500,000

The online campaign raising money to send a bullied New York school bus monitor on vacation has surpassed its goal – by more than half a million dollars. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

The online campaign raising money to send a bullied New York school bus monitor on vacation has surpassed its goal – by more than half a million dollars.

The rapidly growing “Lets Give Karen – The bus monitor – H Klein A Vacation!” campaign on Indiegogo.com, a site devoted to raising money for various causes, reached nearly $550,000 by midday Friday, just two days after it was started. The original goal was set at $5,000.

The campaign will remain open to donations for 28 more days.

Karen Klein, 68, who earns about $15,000 a year as a bus monitor, said, “It’s a nice gesture, but I don’t know if it’s real or not,” after hearing about the donations. “It sounds too good to be true.”

"This is definitely the highest-grossing and fastest-grossing campaign we've ever seen," Indiegogo.com spokesperson Rose Levy told msnbc.com, adding that the site has more than 5,000 campaigns at any given time. "Obviously this particular campaign went viral very quickly, which is a big reason for its success."

In the four years since the company was founded, Levy said, a number of campaigns related to bullying prevention have gained traction on the website.

Indiegogo keeps 4 percent of funds raised as a platform fee if a campaign meets or exceeds its goal. If a campaign fails to meet its goal, Indiegogo takes 9 percent of the total funds raised.

The fund for Klein was set up after a 10-minute, profanity-laced video depicting her being relentlessly bullied and driven to tears by four middle school boys went viral earlier this week.

Where to go with a half-million-dollar vacation budget

Ashley Austell, one of more than 24,000 people who donated to the campaign, said it was the least she could do.

“I couldn’t stop thinking, ‘What if that were my grandma?’” Austell, 24, told msnbc.com in an email after she saw the video. “When she cried, I started bawling because it was so heartbreaking. You felt for this woman. She could be any of our grandmothers.”

Austell, who lives in Arlington, V.A., donated $100 because she “wanted to be part of a whole world showing Karen Klein that people care about her.”

Two of the students and the father of a third implicated in the harassment have issued apologies to Klein via statements to police in Greece, N.Y.

“I am so sorry for the way I treated you,” one of the students named Josh said in statement. “When I saw the video I was disgusted and could not believe I did that. I will never treat anyone this way again.”

Another student, Wesley, said he feels “really bad” about the incident.

The father of a third student said, “I would like it if he could do some work for you or help you in some way,” in a statement to police. “I am embarrassed, angry and sad about the awful way he treated you.”

Two of the four boys who were taped tormenting a school bus monitor have apologized for their behavior in statements released through police.

In the video, four students taunted Klein with a tirade of verbal insults and physical ridicule that included one comment from a boy who said Klein does not have family because “they all killed themselves because they didn’t want to be near you.”

Klein said her son committed suicide 10 years ago.

The video has sparked disbelief among viewers and anger targeted at the four students, noted Capt. Steve Chatterton of the Greece, N.Y., Police Department. “Their families have been threatened. Their brothers and sisters have been threatened,” he said at a press conference Thursday.

Klein said she doesn’t want to see those boys expelled but would like to see them banned from riding the school bus for at least a year and not allowed to participate in team sports.

At a press conference Thursday, school officials said they are still investigating the incident, but promised strong disciplinary action.

In addition to the mass compassion for Klein, Southwest Airlines has offered to fly her and nine other people to Disneyland for free.

Well, it shows there is hope after all since everyone posting is against bullying! Where there is life, there's hope.

Ok...I'd like to give the little pissants the benefit of the doubt that they were sincere in their apologies...but I have my doubts. They put their despicable actions on youtube for the whole world to see, ridiculed, tormented, and made threats against this woman's life. Although this hurt this sweet woman beyond our all's understanding she comes out like the diamond she truly is. God Bless You Karen! Let's see these kids and their parents exposed on national TV and YouTube the way Ms. Karen was with their so called apologies. These kids should watch their backs...I have a feeling bad chit coming their way. Society is sick of this kind of behavior. We aren't going to take it anymore. What you put out in the universe is what you draw back to yourselves....KARMA! That's when the door DOES hit you in the @ss on the way out...we all have a choice.

This story is shocking. I also find it troubling that not 1 kid on this bus tried to step in and defend this woman.

The dad who apologized for his kid should be more embarassed about doing so than he is about his kid's original behavior. What's up with that? He can't even exert enough control over his kid to make the little monster show up and speak for himself? And what's with "apologizing" through the police department? I'll tell you what....it's CYA at its most obvious.

These kids should be expelled. They expell kids for bringing toy guns to school. Surely expulsion is obvious here.

Only the tip of the iceberg. Humans are predators, and small, immature humans are the most vicious of predators. In nature, youngsters that get out of line in social groups are slapped down. Here in the world of "feel-good" permissiveness, this seldom happens, which just encourages the anti-social and uncivil behavior.

In a couple of decades, today's youth will be running things, assuming we make it that far. Once again, I wish us luck.

I hope the apologies were real. So many times they aren't. I hope these boys get grounded. That one kids dad was wrecked. Can't blame him at all. Shameful, Shameful, Shameful. Good luck to you lady

A fitting punishment would be to have the boys cut and edge her lawn (use an old push mower and hand edger... NO power mower, they still make those don't they?) over the summer, and rake the leaves in the fall. They could also do some fix-ups around her house for her, painting, repair a fence, trim the bushes if any and help her with shopping. Make sure Mrs. Klein is there supervising and have each boy apologize before he leaves for the day. It's not harsh, will remind them of their actions and make them stop and think about it before they do it again.

Sadly, this kind of thing goes on all the time. Think about how many people are verbally abused every day by bully punks. This one happened to be on video. It makes me sick.

By the way, why didn't the bus driver get involved? I hate bullies.

I wish this sweet lady, and all the other people who get bullied the best. I hope the punks believe in Karma.

These punks should be forced to make an appology in front of the entire school, kids, parents, teachers, and anyone else that wants to attend. Ms. Klein should be left alone for now and not have to attend if she does not want to. As far as the families getting treated badly, I don't like it, but something is wrong in their families. My family taught me to protect people from crap like this. Perhaps now they will ensure that their family members talk about bullying, and stop anyone in their family from participating.

I think that it's disgusting the way that these students treated this poor woman.

The fact of the matter is they're only apologizing because there's evidence and they're just sorry for getting caught. They have no respect and guaranteed their parents are telling them to apologize.

These student's shouldn't suspended or expelled. Nothing good will come of that. What should happen is 1) community service where they're helping others. 2) detention, but constructive detention. Something along the lines of a class that teaches them the consequences of bullying and what can happen. Case and point: the poor kid that committed suicide at Rutgers last year. These young kids need to be shown specific stories and the actual outcomes of each. No matter how gruesome. They need to understand that no matter how old the victim is (10, 21 or even 70) , it still makes them feel badly regardless.

This woman is better than me. I would be pressing charges to their fullest extent.

I agree with losing bus privelages permanently. We pay our taxes and expect and should demand that all on a bus should be protected from this horse(&&^. Not one of those kids would have apologized on their own! At least one parent has spoken up he is obviously a good parent. The real problem is that tv , hip hop , and youtube raise our kids! I have seen good parents struggle with outside influence and the kids do know wrong from right! A couple of years of community service ie scrubbing buses everyday after school would be a good start! Parents DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SMACK YOUR KIDS only the fear of God will make them behave. Judges quit proscuteing parents who are trying to raise their children! It is none of your business! Youtube quit showing kids gone wild crap to make a fast buck, have some morality! Congress ban hiphop and all the other venues that hide behind FREE SPEECH for monetary gain by using loose morals and other profane idealogy that is corrupting our society. It is funny how no one wants to get involved until after the bad happens, where has our common sense in society gone? Everyone just wants it all for themselves. We used to have communties now we are entities. How sad is it that someone can go to work and have this happen with no authority to defend themselves . I saw a comment above that someone posted and it stated "I would have slapped them". I agree I would have knocked them right off the bus in the middle of the street! I hope she never has work again!

Jalee I agree with you. This is a proven case of elder abuse, and the State must be involved. Send them to an alternate school program. As a school nurse I know that when someone resorts to taping, it is because the pot has boiled over. They became cocky and probably based on their societal connections thought they were untouchable. The driver and all others who have used the bus should be interviewed. They should be banned from certain professions as any convict and loose rights to a passport and voting. Seeds grow into trees. I am sorry is only a password. Child Protective Services has usurped the right of parents to discipline their children by creating an environment where children now feel empowered to do or say whatever they want because all they have to do is report whatever they do not like because the social workers need to keep their job. If this had not been recorded trust me they would have at some point accused her of abuse and asked for her removal in order to take control of the bus. They should be convicted because their words were intentional and prove a clear understanding of social issues. "no one wants to be with you that is why they killed themselves." Pointing their finger in her face and pushing a book at her are an assault and threat to her safety. Let them provide community services for seniors under supervision until the end of their freshman year in college. People in their community must be interviewed about them. I am fed up with elder abuse that is allowed to go on with a slap on the wrist.

I think the four or should be banned from the bus,put to work for community service for the whole summer and also take care of that woman's yard along with community service unless they are all year schooler's then it should be every day after school. I'm sure there are plenty of people around the area that would gladly put them to work

Not necessarily rich kids. I see it everyday in my area, at the store, etc. Kid's today are not taught respect for anyone. I think the parents should be making the kids apologize in front of the entire school to this lady and their sports privileges and other taken away.

This story touched me. I am a high school baseball umpire in Texas. It is amazing what I have witnessed in kids behavior. What is worse is the parents, the kids are the product of their upbringing. As a matter of fact there were 4 kids in this situation, and only three made the effort to do the right thing. The parents of the 4th should be ashamed. These kids are an embarrasment to their families and themselves. They deserve no priviledges, like riding a public school bus. They should not be allowed to participate in any school functions. And they should be put on academic probation. Make them work hard at being a better person. I doubt the schools have the scruples to do the right thing. I see it all the time on the baseball field. It is a sad world. We need to be he leaders in our own lives and be the role models, they are not getting at home.

I drove a school bus for 12 years some years back. We were not allowed to touch the children and each year their behavior got worse. When a junior high kid hit me in the face while getting off the bus I had a conference with the school principal and the kid's mother, whose only response was "my boy wouldn't do that", and the principal reminded me that the young man was planning to play basketball next year at the high school--so that was the end of that! I understand they have cameras on all the busses now.

As much as I would like to "bash" these young people..I can't do it .. It just perpetuates a sad, pathetic, ongoing cycle. Unfortunately, in so many cases the abused become the abusers and round and round we go. Parents and all adults are responsible to teach and model respect, love and care for mankind. We have lost our way as a people under God and for infinite reasons we cannot seem to find the appropriate road map back to civility....?! Hopefully one of these days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries we will figure out how to treat one another and live in harmony despite race, creed, man, woman, big, small , gay, straight, religious, non religious etc. I hope these individuals will learn from this experience and become caring, productive, understanding adults that someday might actually be change agents for the good that brings people together rather than tear them apart...?!

This woman should loose some weight first then she is a bad example for your children.

We teach our children to eat healthy and stay slim, then we have an obese old person ride the bus.

I wonder how she is a role model and at 68,she should possible be with her own old people who may have her own eating habits.

I hope now with the money collected, she will go to the hospital first and find out, options of looking healthy and less obese again.

How can you say that? She's 68. My grandmother is 70 and probably the same size as her. Medication, medical conditions, and MENOPAUSE, and freakin' child birth all cause weight gain. I think you need to learn some proper manners yourself before you are allowed to comment on an issue like this. I am appalled.

What ever happened to parenting skills? When I was their age the thought of conducting myself in this fashion would not have occured to me. My parents taught me to respect the rights of other people especially the elders in the community. What ever punishment is involved thes kids need serious sensitivity training and maybe their parents should enroll in some kind of parenting classes. It seems to me that more and more I am seeing parents with the attitude of we gave birth to them, let the school system raise them. Look how well that turned out.

How dear they. They should be punished not suspended from school because they need that education. They should write a couple essays why i did what i did and why i will never do that again. have them stand in front of the class room describing why bullying is wrong.

Back in Africa young bulls (males) were rampaging villages and behaving destructively. Their studies found that these were orphaned elephants due to poaching. No I'm not directly comparing us to animals, but I think it's an interesting study...being that even in the animal world.... without guidance and discipline.....rules, boundaries and limitations.....kids run amok. Parents are not present in raising their kids anymore....too busy working or when they are around they are on their blackberry or laptop not even participating or watching their kids or worse, sticking them in front of the t.v. or letting them play video games for hours at a time. All this shows the kids in a non verbal way is that "I don't really care about you enough to pay attention to you or discipline you"... kids think they can get away with things because they ususally do, so they keep doing it.

Sooo...it's okay to treat people like this as long as you apologize when you get caught? Don't keep them out of sports...for the most part sports teach discipline and grow character if properly coached. Keep them off the bus for a year...maybe when their parents are driving them to school every day they will realize they have failed parenting 101 and start doing their job.

The father of the 3rd student is a real stand up man & his words leave me with the feeling that his son isn't going to have it to easy for awhile. Unless all the parents of these ??__----__--_?? (I'm lost for words) realize that their sons are headed down a pathway that wont be easy to turn around unless they get involved with their lives now. I truly believe this behaviour takes place because kids that act this way generally have no fear of their parents finding out. Because both parents working or lack of a parent involved in their childs life, Or it could be we have a alot of children raising children today. I'm so sorry Karen had to endure some of the most meanest, nastiness, cruelest words for no reason other than for them boys to delight in the pain they were causing her. However Karen showed everyone how strong of a person she really is by not reacting back in a manner any one of us would have excused if she had. (Except the boy's parents, maybe ?) Karen When you retire you now are in a position to really enjoy your golden years & im truly happy for you. i got a feeling Karen will be getting alot more positive attention from the kids on that bus whether them boys are on it or not. God bless all that contributed to help make things easier for Karen's future. I must add before i close, I believe i wouldn't of been able to share my thoughts here if i had ever treated anyone in that manner, God bless, My father has been called home for years now, however i shudder now when i think of what he would of did to me for acting that way .
