Mary Cheney, daughter of former vice president, marries longtime girlfriend

Charlie Neibergall / AP

Mary Cheney, left, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, with her partner, Heather Poe, at the Republican National Convention in New York in September 2004.

Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, and longtime partner Heather Poe have married in Washington, D.C., the family confirmed on Friday.

"Very happy to announce that as of this morning, Heather and I are legally married (at least in DC), 20 years to the day after our first date,” Mary Cheney posted on her Facebook page.

The former vice president and his wife, Lynne, were “delighted," according to a statement provided to The Daily Caller.

"Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized," the statement said, according to the Caller. "Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness."

Poe and Mary Cheney have two children, a son and daughter born to Cheney.

They live in Virginia.

Same-sex marriage was legalized in the District of Columbia in December 2009. The district began issuing licenses in March 2010.

And somewhere a fundamentalist preacher's head just exploded.

The Republican party would probably do a bit better with the center if they could shake free of preacher activists. Barry Goldwater called it back in the 80s when he said the GOP was going to have a hell of a time if the fundamentalist Christians got a foothold in the party, because politics requires compromise and preachers just aren't cut out for compromise because when you believe God told you something, you're hands are kind of tied.

Only caring about themselves, and not there to serve anyone, BUT THEMSELVES. Politicians, either side, and Preachers, are nothing more than "Salesmen", telling people what they want to hear, not the truth, but for their own "Personal" gain.

Oh. But that's right, the Right don't have/use brains, they may or may not have. In the same way they don't need truth or facts. Oops! Sorry, my bad.

He only mumbled it in a manner that was least likely to harm the GOP platform. And when comparing him to Obama, let's remember one thing: did Cheney shout out his support for gay marraige when he still had an election to run for and win? Nope. He never said One Word when it actually might have hurt him. Obama said it before his second election, and knew it was the right thing to do, even though it could cost him many, many votes.

Actually it was in 1996, twice on the record. And while Obama's ambiguous position since then was just to fool the gullible bigots, the reality is that he's always been careful to draw a distinction between his support for full legal equality and what his religion tells him.

Aggie, you are correct that there is no universal definition of Democrats. But being progressives means that they are all interested in the big picture.

Same for Republicans. We all know there are two different types of Republicans, the greedy liars who stand to gain more money and power by talking the other type, dupes to the lies, into supporting them. Which group do you belong to? Oh, sorry, I should have known - being an aggie tell us more than you would be comfortable with.

Ever hear the expression "actions speak louder than words"? Yeah, for 3 years Dick Cheney has "said" he supports same sex marriage. But what did he do when he was in a position of power to make things happen? Nothing. Obama, on the other hand, has acted almost from the get-go: his administration stopped defening DOMA, ended "Don't Ask-Don't Tell." He was only late to the game in matching his words with his actions. He was already walking the walk, just not talking the talk. To me, it's far more important what he DOES than what he SAYS. But now he's doing as well as saying. Cheney is just talk.

The hypocrisy of this situation is just staggering! Face it, Darth Cheney would NEVER have supported gay marriage if his own daughter were not a lesbian. Even though he knew Mary was a lesbian, he wouldn't stand up for her and her partner publicly until a couple years ago when it became common knowledge he had a gay daughter. I hope he understands and regrets his decision to leave his own child and so many other Americans in limbo when he could have exercised his influence to help them.

Hi, 'kaybeetoys.' I didn't know anything about the group either. And I don't know if your question was just rhetorical, but if you are actually curious I think you'll find the Wiki as interesting a read as I did after seeing your question.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Log_Cabin_Republicans

What I take away from the Wiki article is that the "Log Cabin Republicans" are working to change the direction of the Republican Party ...from within.

And when you think about it, that's a pretty sensible approach, given that it's unlikely that opposition to the Republican platform from the outside will do anything more than just steel its resolve and push it even more to the Right.

An 'intellectual insurrection' from the inside shows more promise on a multitude of issues confronting any political party than does confrontation from those perceived as 'the other side.'

And when you really think about it, LGBT people don't need to spend their efforts persuading Democrats of their rights to equal treatment and civil rights. That's pretty much been a done deal for two to three decades.

No, 'Eagle', someone seems not to understand "Love."

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

      Robert,

The "heart [may want] what the heart wants" - and that desire may seem quite real; however, the Bible reminds us that:

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" [Jeremiah 17:9]

      and

"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these things come from within, and defile the man." [Mark 7:21-23]

In addition, let us not forget that the "love" in I Corinthians 13 is agape.

But it isn't hypocrisy. His position was no different than Obama's in the first campaign who only now finds it expedient to declare his belief that gays should have the same rights as everyone else. People expected Dick Cheney to be a small minded homophobic because he is a Republican but no one said anything about the hypocrisy of President Obama because he is a Democrat who didn't believe in gay rights.

The fact is you can support a candidate even if they hold beliefs you disagree with. I believe that gays should have the right to marry their same sex love and I believe that abortion should remain legal (even though I believe it is murder) and while you would assume I would vote for President Obama I will not because of so much just this week but also because he has no fiscal responsibility and his healthcare referendum is unconstitutional (as are so many other things he has done recently).

*(and before you say that Bush did a bunch of horrible things, I agree, that doesn't mean it's okay for President Obama to do them too.)

I believe that this is a dirty and perverted union! Marriage is between a man and a woman, not two confused members of the same gender. Men were not designed to be penetrated and have their anus ripped apart by another man, nor were women designed to use a fake rubber/plastic penis to try to imitate the real thing. If you want a penis (to women), then hook up with a man as he has the real thing, and for the record, nothing is better than the original!

How dirty for a man to penetrate another man's anus and come away with nasty bacteria filled feces on his penis. How horrible and dangerous and we wonder why the HIV/AIDS rate is high in the LBGT community. Women were not designed to slobber in the vaginas of other women, how gross and nasty that is. Homosexuality is perverted and sickening!

For all the men that get your asses ripped apart by other men, be assured that real men do not take it up the ass. I know that many of you believe that if people talk graphically about gay sex, that that supposedly mean that the person is struggling with their own homosexual feelings or lifestyle. Again, that is simply a side show that gays make themselves believe.

You simply do not want to admit that what you do to each other is horrible and deeply sickening. In addtion to that, gay men are notorious for actually eating each other's poop as a gay ritual of acceptance. No wonder the gay people are at the top of the list for having HIV/AIDS and other STD's.

Yes, Dick.. head..of some republican committee or something, did get a new heart and at what age? Yes, 71 yrs old, Dick has to be the oldest heart recipient historically, why? because the criteria for transplant of a heart doesn't extend to persons of that age. Why should a 71 yr old man be given a heart that may have saved the life of a 25 or 35 yr old man or woman, or hell even a 45 yr old in need of transplant. Politics is a sickening business and the favoritism that enables a 71 yr old to live and quite possibly condemned a 30 yr old to death because of "WHO" he is when a heart that was avail was given to someone regardless of that persons place in the line up established by the registry for avail organs. Cheney, you are an evil SOB, and if there is a "hell" your spot is being warmed up as we speak. And the Doctor that performed that transplant should have his surgical rights revoked, permanently and then he should be charged with a crime for either the death of the rightful recipient or the suffering that person had to endure while waiting for another viable organ. That transplant was the most incredible slap in the face of the American people by Cheney, basically telling us that the established rules do not apply to him or people like him and if you all don't like it there isn't a damn thing anyone can do about it! Sickening, absolutely sickening. The degree to which this country has sunk morally is shameful.

Okay all you haters, and people who believe that their laws should apply to what goes on in the privacy of the bedrooms of others. A few facts so listen up:

                - It has been going on for thousands of years, well before recorded history.

                - It is practiced in many cultures to this day.

                - It is detailed in the Bible many times.

                - It is well documented in many, many species in the animal kingdom.

                - It is a personal matter of choice.

                - It provides mutual satisfaction to both partners.

                - Everybody has an equal freedom to love whomever they choose without being discriminated against, and it's nobody else's damn business what goes on in the bedrooms of those who practice it.

Best of all, consent isn't required any more than consent is required to declaw, neuter or bathe for that matter.

Legalized bestiality - The next progressive sexual frontier. Ew. Further proof that this country is going straight down the toilet.

Actually Dick has supported State's Rights to allow gay marriage for years.

See, Dick and his wife have known for years what a wonderful daughter they have. Once folks come to know people, it's alot harder to fear and hate them.

I wonder if everyone came out, how many homophobes would be forced to rethink their fears.

Actually Cheney has spoken out on behalf of his daughter and her partner...many times. this is the one area, and maybe only area that I saw that Cheney does have a heart. In the 2004 election at a debate this issue came up and he said he disagreed with Bush on the federal amendment push to ban marriage between gay people, and he thought individual states should be able to decide the issue. Cheney is close to both of his daughters. Every other thing about Cheney bugs the heck out of me, this one, good for him.

i agree with you! While he said that he disagree, that he would support him (Bush). Nothing wrong with that. That's not being a hypocrite. That's keeping your personal beliefs seperate from your work. And that's what he did. We don't always agree with our bosses, but we do support them.

Nice goin Mary..You couldn't wait until Ol Dick was in the ground to commit this "sin"? Well he'll surely go to his grave with regret and disappointment that's for sure. What a frickin disgrace! In looking at the photo neither has a trace of female gentics left in them. We have a bunch of these types where I live now. Everytime one walks by my girlfriend and I grunt like a bulldog " Urrrf...Urrfah...Uuurrrrrrfah.." It is our signal to let the other one know " Bull-dyke approaching.."

With the era Dick was raised in he may say he supports his daughter sexual preferences but if she were to ask him flat out on his death bed if he truly approved of her gay lifestyle or even gay marriage I think he would draw her in close and whisper in her ear with his last breath.."(Gasp!)...I ....have...(gasp!)...never...ap'..prove..ed..(gasp!) of ...your....attraction...(gasp)..for..women...(gasp)!.........BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!" I think deep in her heart she knows this too. Just in looking at her fascial expressions she has the exact same look as Ellen DeGenrres has. That look of that she's disappointed everyone around her, but most especially her parents and God himself..

loslo - there was really no wedding, they went thru the motions but for it to be a real wedding sanctified in the eye's of God it would have to be between one woman and one man.

You must belong to one of the bigoted cults, like the Mormons or Southern Baptists.

Many Christians don't share your hate or your ignorance.

I'm an atheist and no religious cult was involved in my marriage. Does that mean I can't file a joint tax return?

Skrekk ... look on the bright side. Next year, you don't have to buy an anniversary gift. When someone uses "God" in their nickname, you know that they just have to be right.

You gotta love this.lol >Hypocrisy is a value that I think has been embraced by the Republican Party. We get lectured by people all day long about moral values by people who have their own moral shortcomings.
