'Landmark day': Reaction to guilty verdict in Sandusky child sex abuse trial

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly speaks outside the courthouse in Bellefonte after Jerry Sandusky was found guilty of child sex-abuse.

Reaction poured out in Bellefonte, Pa., and across the nation Friday night after former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual abuse.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola said he wasn't surprised by the verdict and planned an appeal. State Attorney General Linda Kelly praised investigators, prosecutors and the victims who came forward, calling them "brave men." And an advocate for victims of sexual violence called it a "landmark day."

Below is a selection of reaction to the verdict and the case.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola, speaking outside the courthouse, on Sandusky’s reaction:
“He was disappointed by the verdict but obviously he will have to live with it."

State Attorney General Linda Kelly, speaking outside the courthouse:
“A serious child predator ... has been held accountable for his crimes."

Penn State University (read the full statement here):
“The legal process has spoken and we have tremendous respect for the men who came forward to tell their stories publicly. No verdict can undo the pain and suffering caused by Mr. Sandusky, but we do hope this judgment helps the victims and their families along their path to healing. …

“Now that the jury has spoken, the University wants to continue that dialogue and do its part to help victims continue their path forward. To that end, the University plans to invite victims of Mr. Sandusky’s abuse to participate in a program to facilitate the resolution of claims against the University arising out of Mr. Sandusky's conduct.”

Defense attorney Joe Amendola speaks outside the courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., after his client, Jerry Sandusky, was found guilty of sexually abusing children.

The family of the late Joe Paterno, former Penn State football coach, for whom Sandusky once worked (read the full statement here):
"Although we understand the task of healing is just beginning, today's verdict is an important milestone. The community owes a measure of gratitude to the jurors for their diligent service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families. "

Jerry Sandusky convicted of child sex abuse

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, in a statement:
“First, I want to thank the jury for their willingness to serve on such a difficult case. I also want to commend the multiple victims in this case who had the courage to come forward and testify in court, confronting Sandusky, and proving beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty of these reprehensible crimes.”

Scott Berkowitz, president of the nonprofit Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (read the full statement here):
“Today is a landmark day for survivors of sexual violence across the nation. This verdict shows the country that when allegations of such abuse are brought to light, they will be taken seriously and that a just outcome is possible.

Matt Sandusky: From staunch defender to damning accuser

Grace Gordon, 49, a Bellefonte resident at the courthouse, welcomed the verdict but lamented the damage the trial had done to the community:
"It's hard, it really is, to see a small town torn apart like this."

The mother of the accuser known as Victim 6, according to the AP:
"Nobody wins. We've all lost."

The homosexual pedofile, Sandusky, is now held accountable for his actions. His wife, the woman who stood by him, is now forced to see what her life with the man she calls her husband, was like..

He doesn't have sex with his wife. She was fine with that...

We all know. She doesn't understand that we all know... She thought her life was a secret.

Now we know, she's beginning to understand...

She'll have evaluate her whole life with him now. All the time she thought sex wasn't important... It was.. He just liked boys.

He loved her, but was it truly love? Or was it convenient while he started a business to lure boys into his world?

Sandusky's wife has a huge problem in front of her now. She has to confront whether he is the homosexual pedofile that is alledged, or is he the loving husband she knew back in the day.. She knows..

Everything is different now. It has been different for a long time.

I feel sorry for her. She had a companion, but not a true lover as married people know it. He probably loves her, but his passion is with boys.

She must be feeling that now. She must know it. Women know when men aren't who they say they are.

There's not one bone in my body that feels sorry for her. You cannot have a child screaming over and over for help in your basement and NOT hear it!

Furthermore, if I had a husband that was taking little boys to the basement, I'd CERTAINLY find out why!

He was raping his own son and I'll bet further investigation would reveal he's raped them all.

I hope these very brave little "survivors" sue Sandusky's estate, Penn St., McQuary, and the whole host of Penn St. officials who chose to ignore the problem since 1998! They deserve SOMETHING for Sandusky and Penn St. RUINING their lives!!!

    "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

I'm not sure that I feel that way. Life is hard; people do evil things. But at least those poor little boys (now grown up) who never were believed or who were too embarassed or intimidated to come forward have some measure of vindication.

The guilty verdict also puts Governor Corbett and Penn State in the hot seat for enabling a pedophile.

The boys who were molested and raped should have all their counseling paid for by Sandusky.

Some people will still doubt Sandusky's guilt despite the jury's verdict. For the good of all the boys harmed, those people should keep their opinions to themselves and let justice take its course.

Any particular reason why Dottie Sandusky hasn't been indicted yet? Or was she just a real sound sleeper?

Public opinion was this homosexual pedofile was guilty from the start. Maybe he will be placed with the rest of the homo peds in prison, there are many indeed. Just hope he dies soon so to save the tax burden on his sorry ass. Reform for laws regarding these lowlife pieces of human should be a priority for once but the ACLU would be all over it. They are the lowest form of humans we have to deal wiht in the justice system. They are evil personified and death is too easy.

        "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

I can truly believe the mother of one of the victims/survivors feels that way. The fact is that no matter what happens to Sandusky the damage has been done and the survivors still have to heal. As a sexual abuse survivor myself, I can't even begin to imagine how traumatic it must have been for them to have to testify-to face your abuser and to have the defense try to tear apart your credibility while you are on the stand. It would be hard enough to overcome the shame enough to get up there in the first place. I commend all of them for stepping forward. Though it is great to see justice done, the real winning will be in their healing and their recovery, not in this.

Thank God there will be no more victims. Hope those that suffered at the hands of this predator can at the very least take solace in that, but also hope they can feel a sense of having orchestrated the justice process by having the courage to come forward, each of them.

There are always more victims, they may not have been victims of Sandusky but there are thousands upon thousands of victims of child molestation out there. I know what you mean, and I am sure that you mean well, but taking out one pedophile does not end the epidemic (and it is an epidemic) of child abuse. Child abuse should never be softened and should always be heavily prosecuted but as long as people get the feeling that "it is over" it never will be.

I think his children should change their last name. There is no last name with such horror as the name SANDUSKY.

I even read where Sandusky, OH was horrified that their city is now sharing the name with such horrid crimes.

That was my first thought JG.

Growing up in Cleveland, I've always associated 'Sandusky' with Cedar Point. I'll bet they'll petition the city to change it's name, not wanting to damage their own reputation. ("Sandusky, Ohio" is always prominently shown in their marketing materials.)

I have very little sympathy for Sandusky's family. 6 kids and a wife in a not very large house and none of them knew? It defies credibility especially since the youngest son has finally admitted he was abused. The Sanduskys won't accept the truth. They'll champion good ole Jerry to the grave because like Penn State and Happy Valley, they will always live in a state of denial. For example the woman outside the courtroom reported to lament how the trial tore the town apart. The only ones who deserve our sympathy and our admiration for their courage are the young men who walked into that courtroom to tell their stories. They're the ones who have made it certain no more boys will be raped by Jerry Sandusky.

For too many years, a life time, we have kept silent about the sexual abuse of children. One in four girls is sexual abused and one in six boys are sexual abused. It is a time to talk about this openly. It is a time to finally have a voice. But more important than anything I could ever say, it is a time to believe a child. Adults need to learn all the signs, the red flags of sexual abuse. Adults need to arm themselves with education so that they can teach their children about sexual abuse.

If a child comes to you with a story of abuse, for Gods Sake, please believe the child; they do not make this stuff up!!!!!! Pedophiles are everywhere; they are in your neighborhood, your church, your school, they are where your children are. Pedophiles will groom the child and work the parents. They are just like Sandusky!!!!!! Sandusky is a classic, casebook pedophile. Please learn from this disgusting, horrific, tragic story. Strangers rarely sexually abuse kids; pedophile sexual abusers have to be close enough to gain the trust of a child and woo the child into a trap.

I would like to thank these brave young men that finally found there voice. You are heroes, because you have helped teach people that sexual abusers are everywhere and that they are people exactly like Sandusky.

Kim I totally agree with you. I was a victim as a child not as an adult from a family for years. I didn't know better because I looked up to him. It took a long long time for someone from looking outside to figure it out. I have been anal about talking to my children about any kind, sign of abuse. I'll be stink on poo. Yes, talk to your children, know your children, or nieces nephews, whatever the case may be but dont doubt what they might be saying to you even if it is krypted. I would totally take the law in my own hand if someone touched my loved ones, its just too much to bare with to be long and drawn out like this. GS

you are exactly right!!! BELIEVE them!!! especially little ones, I agree that they can't make it up! and if they tell the same story over and over you know they are telling the truth. I also agree with parents needing to be educated!!!

I would also like to comment that the justice system is made up of people, therefore, it isn't the justice system that doesn't always work!!! It is all of the sick pathetic people in this world!!! Good people will never be able to comprehend any criminal for the simple reason that good people don't think like bad people do.

Sandusky was silly, marvelous.. A complete man who loves boys all his life.

He wants to be innocent, but the truth is, he's guilty of using young boys to make his life more pleasureable.

Now society will waste more money on him, the guy who is the scum and we'll all pay for it.

What a pleasant guy! NOT!! He doesn't care about anybody but himself and all those around him want the USA to pay for everything that he did wrong!

That's why we have problems! People can't see through their own eyes! They think they see and they praise god that they see.... But they see nothing except for a guy who likes children... NOW SEE!! The child rapist!! His wife was nothing for the last 15 years and she should have known. SHE DID KNOW!!

Oh, how I hate the people who turn their head and say, nothing is wrong! She knew, she did nothing, and of course, he did nothing too!

They both are the sickest things in the world. They knew it, they didn't care and they carried on through their whole lives...

What a bunch of pigs and swine!!! Penn. State, where are you?!!! Who are you?!! When did you become such a problem for all of us!!!?

I have been amazed at how many of my friends have confided in me that they were sexually abused as children. I keep thinking that there can't be that many-but there are! And I'm not even talking about recovered memory cases-these are people who have always remembered their abuse, guys and girls.

I was a victim of the same sort but an actual family member as a minor and I am glad to see the verdict. As a child you look up to your elders for all things in life and not know that they are sick and wrong. I was almost an adult when I realized it was wrong. I know this is common now that I am older. I commend the brave victims for coming forward with their stories and sharing to stop the abuse. It may not be my story but it is a victory for everyone in the sense of being abused and not having the resources or knowledge age appropriate to do something about it... There are so many people affected in this case and my heart and prayers are with them as them conclude and move forward. God Speed!

I spoke up in 1982 and nothing happend, my brother spoke up a second time in 1986 and the Coast Guard and Metro Dade Police both buried it without even interviewing me. We had at least a dozen therapists over the years and only ONE of those reported despite the laws requiring reporting molestation.

I thought I already defined it quite nicely but I will have another go. A pedophile wants to own a sexual object where a homosexual wants a loving partnership with an adult of the same sex. A pedophile is a predator seeking children for sexual pleasure and a homosexual wants nothing more than what a straight person wants. I know gay men and women that have been in very long term relationships that work in exactly the same way as my marriage has worked for the past nineteen years. Sex for a homosexual is only part of the equation, the relationship with their partner is what matters.

Secondly, most pedophiles don't really care about what sex their victims are, the age is what matters to them though there might be a slightly weighted preference for one or the other. Sandusky was in a position where boys were more available than girls as a football coach. Pedophiles aren't stupid and won't take any more risks than they have to, they are manipulative as all hell, but they are not usually stupid.

Homosexual or heterosexual, if you sexually, physically and/or emotionally abuse ANY child then you are a pedophile and/or an abuser and must be exposed and dealt with under the law.

Homosexual or heterosexual, if you are an adult in a consenting relationship, that's your business. It is also your business so long as no forms of abuse are going on.

Sexual preference has nothing to do with whether or not you are a good person, obeying society's rules and giving others the respect they deserve. It's the individual themselves that must be held accountable for their actions.

                        Thank you Mike & Standup!

Since this pedofile predator (I can't use his name as it damages the name of a famous city in Ohio) used children in the matter he did, doesn't claim him to be a homosexual. Many heterosexuals have anal sex as well.

Please do not lump or stigmafi a specific group into the same grouping as these predators.

NO HOMOSEXUAL, BISEXUAL, OR HETEROSEXUAL WILL EVER GO AFTER CHILDREN BECAUSE OF THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION! IT'S POWER, MENTAL, CONTROL THAT DRIVES THESE MEN (& SOME WOMEN), NOT SEX PER SE.

Dave, I'm catching a whiff o' homophobia from your comments. However, homosexuality, whether male or female, is a sexual orientation and involves mutual consent, as well as a whole range of complex emotions. I would bet a large sum of money that gay and straight people alike are united in their revulsion toward Jerry Sandusky's monstrous behavior.

Abusing and exploiting children is the act of a pedophile. Sandusky took advantage of his authority to brutalize the helpless and unwilling. You might say he is the sexual equivalent of a cannibal. He is a miserable specimen of humanity by any grown-up's standards.

People ask for help all the time but state, local, and federal governments cherry pick what to prosecute. The last investigation by both Coast Guard Intelligence and Dade County Police Department was buried by both agencies without even interviewing me (the other victim and the first victim to report the abuse). Sandusky is being held accountable, and that is laudable but what about those of us that never had the chance for justice because the authorities thought it less embarassing to bury it and let us continue to suffer without justice?

I would have to suggest if you were one of the victims and accountable for caring for your own parts then why did you not pursue or speak to anyone? Sounds like a democratic position of relying on everyone else to wipe your hind when you potty......... What did I miss here?

                            #8.1 - Sat Jun 23, 2012 1:05 AM EDT

I did speak to them, there was a botched investigation in 1981 and a second one in 1986 that did nothing but cause the forced retirement of a LtCdr in the coast guard. It should have also been reported through the psychologists and therapists we had to go to for years but wasn't. This is not a "democratic position" this is being failed AFTER REPORTING and a failure of the authorities to take responsibility for their part. I guess you didn't pull the context out or have a republican agenda that only holds the innocent accountable.

Asking the victims when the abuser is not only present but behind the victim is not good police work and is certainly not good Coast Guard Intelligence investigation.

Do Not judge a man until you have walked a thousand miles in his shoes. Unless you have been sexual abused, you have no clue what it does to you. It is very difficult for a sexual abuse victim to find there voice. It can be a daunting experience to say to authorities you have been abused. It is equivalent to be abused all over again. You are a victim yet they treat you like you are guilty and you need to prove you are innocent. The authorities never believe you. It is like running up a very steep hill, with your abuser on your back and you get very, very tired of feeling like you have done something wrong by opening your mouth.

Who in any sort of authority believed that Sandusky did what he did??!!??!! No one believed it; therefore no one did anything about it. Do not blame the victim!!!!!!

It's so much easier to blame the victim when the abuser is in a position of authority. My adoptive father had a high security rating and was continually upgraded despite the reporting of abuse until it became inconvenient to the Coast Guard. It's incredibly hard, after almost a decade of abuse, to speak out about anything and the predators take advantage of that. A four year old can't even really understand what is going on until they get old enough to know right from wrong in a deeper sense, and long term abuse seriously stunts knowing the difference, you only know that it hurts but don't really know why at that age.

Now we will see if the rest of them get time for their parts! The NCAA should also do the right thing by giving Penn State the "Death Sentence", like SMU at least for football. But they will force all of us fans to do our part by NOT supporting Penn State football. They play in the local market, the Big Ten, and I WILL NOT BE WATCHING! See, to all you folks who said I would eventually forgive them, I WILL NOT!

It will never happen, the corporations, agencies, and NCAA won't be held accountable regardless of how many times or by whom the abuse was reported. This is from very personal experience and the general public has no long term memory. This will haunt the victims for the rest of their lives though they will learn how to cope and work around the abuse, it will always be there in the background of everything they do, coloring their behavior and thoughts in subtle ways.

Mike, I understand the situation. I have been working with veterans since 1968 and homeless veterans through my 501 (c)(3) non profit corporation since, 2008! Unfortunately, I have seen and heard too many situations. Politicans, non profit organizations, religious groups, etc. all have an agenda. I hope to publish a book with all the quotes that I have recieved, over the years, when I retire! I sometimes wonder how we ever evolved past the apes. And for all those that believe God created man, he wouldn't have let us stay around this long, if he had of! Good Day!

Justice is served for you, not the victims, you only have to live through reading or watching articles about it, they have to live with the memories and roiling emotions for a while to come. Eventually, they will come to terms with it but I doubt they will feel that justice has really been served unless the people that covered for him are also held accountable.

It is important that any molestation not only be reported, but be reported far and wide. Tell teachers, police, therapists, doctors, nurses, principals and anyone else in a position of authority over you. One person might ignore it but the more know, the more likely it is that reports will go to the people that can actually do something about it. Children are no longer completely powerless to report abuse and it's important that the children are taught that.

Sometimes talking causes a backlash. Especially if people in authority are involved. Kids don't always know who is safe-if anyone is.

Won't happen, I have been trying to get an attorney to "go after" the Coast Guard since 1988 for the same reasons to no avail. Attorneys normally only go where the money is and suing a major corporation/school/government entity just doesn't pay.

That being said, it is possible with this being such a big story that they could strike while the iron is hot and be compensated. Wait until the story is cold and it becomes impossible.

Linda Kelly is a Politician and called a rambling news conference to pound her chest and take credit for crimes that have been ongoing for nearly twenty years. All of a sudden she puts on a Cape and comes to the rescue of these poor kids. Where in the hell has she been? The same question for Penn State, Local Authorities and everyone else involved in this massive cover-up. The good people of Central Pa. should demand that those in Authority who were told, knew or suspected something and never reported it up the ladder should be Prosecuted or at least shamed into resigning. God Bless the Children. Justice Delayed is Justice Denied.

You don't. Where do you get your news, the Havana Times? The President, Trustees, Vice President, AD, Head Football Coach, Assistant Coaches, Campus Police, Local Prosecutor to just name a few. Sandusky is the leader of these gangsters, but the Co-Conspirators list is long and deep. I have no problem with Penn State, per se, but PSU should be sanctioned with no Bowl Games, and thrown out of the Conference, if for no other reason failure to provide a safe-haven for youngsters. An assistant Coach sees a kid getting raped in a shower by a Coach and his first thought is to tell the Head Coach? Beyond stupid.

If anyone follows child sexual abuse crimes usually the criminals do not serve a long term sentence but the victims do it is a LIFE SENTENCE! Yes they will be haunted forever, nightmares and never TRUSTING ANYONE, without counseling (which so many don't receive because they are afraid for thier lives to tell anyone) As Mike Worley commented the victims will be haunted by the ABUSE it can ruin every aspect of their lives. Even I can't say sexual abuse, I say this type of abuse. This pathetic excuse for a man ripped these children apart physically (think about a grown mans genitallia inside a child) , i wish i could say the actual words, because it hurts like hell, it feels like you're on fire!!!!!! and mentally. He robbed them of their childhood, spiriit and self-worth! No child deserves this, no one deserves thIis! I don't know if anyone else notices this but animals seem to have more rights than our children do, I hope I'm wrong but I see more television shows about animals being mistreated than children. I NEVER SEE SHOWS ABOUT CHILDREN BEING MISTREATED!!!!!!!! If anyone knows how I can help these children please let me know. I want to help them, I am one of them and I do love animals but our children are much more important

The problem is that serial molesters don't mean it when they say "I am sorry", they just don't feel that they did anything wrong despite what the law says. Sandusky is a serial molester and only hid his penchant for sex with young boys because it was illegal, not because of any moral problems with his predilictions.

An apology from someone like that means less than nothing since the pedophile doesn't mean it and he probably can't even be bothered to fake it.

A victim of this type of abuse can come to terms with it without hearing "I'm sorry." I know because I will certainly never hear those words. Most of my abusers are dead. I am learning to come to terms with it by learning to forgive. By forgiving I don't mean that I forget what happened. I don't mean that I give my abusers a "pass" on what they did because it was all horrible. I also don't trust any that are alive, and I limit my contact with them. What I do mean is that I am learning to let go of my anger and any desire I have for revenge. I'm not forgiving for THEIR sake but for mine. As it has been said, "Holding onto a resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die." Being bitter and angry only hurts me. I'm choosing to let it go and to be at peace about it. It's a very slow process and not a very easy one. It's not like I just say, "I forgive," and it's done-it's taking a lot of time. So far it's been worth it, though. You can't control what your abusers do or what the justice system does; you can only control what you do.

i was never angry until now. I don't know what happened. Therapists would ask me why I was not angry maybe I was in denial, I don't know. I am angry as hell now. I guess I get angry now because it is 2012 and there is so much awareness but it is still happening. I was born in 1963 and when I did tell and my mother was confronted she would yell that I was a liar and I would agree. I was scared. It made me not know what was reality, I thought she was my protector, and I was crazy. When I would tell her what happened she would say it didn't happen, it didnt happen.

Good verdict....Sandusky won't hurt anymore kids...but as an SA survivor I can tell you the effects of sexual abuse last a lifetime..The next step is for Penn State and it's administrators to be held accountable for their horrible mishandling of this situation....PSU put the protection of it's image above the safety of kids and for this it should pay dearly....Just like The Bishops and The Catholic Church.... At the very least PSU should voluntarily cancel the upcoming season and use that time to reflect upon the misplaced loyalty and values that allowed a pedophile to do what he did when it could have been stopped if one of any number of PSU officials had done the right thing. Instead we have the worst scandal in the history of American sport at any level.Really shameful and horrible stuff all around.
