Sandusky reportedly on suicide watch

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky will now begin the next phase of his life as a convicted child sex offender. NBC's John Yang reports.

Jerry Sandusky has been placed on suicide watch, one of his lawyers said Saturday, a day after he was convicted of sexually abusing children in what one juror told NBC was a clear case of guilt.

Jerry Sandusky is seen in this booking photo on Friday.

Karl Rominger said Sandusky was under individual guard at the county jail, known as suicide watch, and was apart from the general prison population, Reuters reported.

It was not clear if Sandusky had acted in a way that threatened his own life, or if the move was standard procedure in such a high-profile case.

Rominger reiterated that the former defensive coach for Penn State football will appeal the verdict, a process that can happen when Sandusky is sentenced in 90 days or so.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted Friday of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and faces a minimum sentence of 60 years in prison, NBC News reported.

NBC TODAY: Juror explains deliberations

Juror Joshua Harper told TODAY that the look on Sandusky's face as the guilty verdicts were announced was "confirmation" that they had made the right decision.

Sandusky had shown "no real emotion, just kind of accepting because he knew it was true," he added.

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact.

Ghosts of Sandusky haunt home where charity was born

NBC's Michael Isikoff has more on the next steps in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case.

As Sandusky was placed in a police cruiser to be taken to jail on Friday, someone yelled at him to "rot in hell!" Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on the courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

Sandusky is one 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility, a jail that is just seven miles from the Penn State campus.

Like other inmates there, he was allowed to bring a few items with him and is allowed visits from his family, friends and lawyers.

The jail did not say whether anyone had come to see him Saturday. At his home, his wife and three of their adopted children remained inside after returning there Friday night. The windows blinds and curtains were drawn.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Jerry Sandusky's victims, their families and an entire community are hoping to move forward after the former Penn State assistant football coach was found guilty of child sex abuse. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

After his sentencing, he is going to appeal the verdict............

On exactly what grounds?

Maybe on the grounds that he claimed he was innocent, and they should have believed him?

He's toast. He just needs to settle for that.

In prison, he's going to be subject a little of his own kind of Hell. That's appropriate.

Sandusky is going to be allowed to live by our "liberal politically correct" society! This creep should not have a chance to kill himself, he should be executed for what the perv has done to kids.

Give Jerry Sandusky, a sharp knife, a loaded gun, a noose with a short stool, and a bottle of poison. I for one do feel I should support that monster.

He is about to get sodomized by some of the largest black men that the prison system offers. Homosexuality in jails in encouraged. Jerry raped little boys, that is frowned upon even in prison. They are going to rape the living hell out of that old-man. Just look at it as pay back Jerry. Remember all of the times you forced your adult body onto young Innocent boys? Now some of the biggest blacks you ever seen going to stuff their foot longs into your old ass, and mouth. Those little boys penis's will seem like cocktail wieners compared to what is about to get shoved in your mouth. Oh and if your teeth get in the way they will just knock them out for you. Think of how much easier it will be to do what you want with your mouth to your new friends with not teeth? Suicide my butt, he is just so excited for his new home.

Oh PLEEZE, suicide watch is normal, but they needn't bother--another 1000 or so arseholes are likely watching him too. He is only suicidal in his verbiage; his actions speak another language and that is of total indifference. He has never found himself guilty; he is incapable of disciplining himself, so why should he be bothered by a life sentence--so far his life has been fine...his life in prison may be a perfect conclusion.

He will probably be out to contest his civil trials since being seen in prison yellow is prejudicial. This part of justice was just the tip of the iceberg of trouble that this guy created.

Look at the jury guys face Sandusky was guilty as soon as he walked into the court room, you can see it the guys eyes, he had already formed his opinion GUILTY. That is wrong as a jurist you can not have an opinion to guilt or innocence till after all the evidence is presented in the case.

Your an azzhole Dale, sandusky and many in penn state including his wife are guilty of allowing this to happen.

They should ALL be locked up for life for allowing it to happen. And for once the jury did it right.

Well let me see jackass, first of all I am not an @!$%#, second I am not saying he is not guilty and should be locked away and lose the key, but the law in this country is you have a right to fair jury trail regardless of what you did. Now he got what he deserved for sure, Bubba will have a field day. All i said the look in that jurist eyes had him guilty from the start.

In the prison system there is usually one person that is bigger and badder than the rest of them. They say that when a newbe comes into prison this guy rapes them and they become his women or property. He pimps them for money, at least that is what I have been told.

Agreed. Get his face off the "front page" of the newpapers/websites. I'm sure there are more interviews the media is panting after (jurors, attorneys), but lets keep this to a minimum--remember, there is still an appeal to go through. Also, all the media members should just go away and leave the rest of the family members alone unless they specifically request press presence.

Maybe he will confess to God, and be forgiven. We all know that he will never be forgiven here on earth. I don't know him but I have endured the behavior of people like him, so if he did these things, I hope he rots in his own special hell.

We need to stop making heroes out of people because they can toss or kick a ball around, or swim faster than other people, or slam-dunk a basketball, or just because they wear a white collar and a cross, or do a hundred shows a year like Justin Beiber. Being able to do those things tells kids nothing about the athlete's, priest's, or entertainer's character. We need to get back to real heroes - dedicated moms and dads, brave soldiers, honest cops, decent clergy, and hard-working teachers.

I don't know if Pennsylvania puts all pedophiles together at one institution like they do down in Florida. That's the only way they get to see the light of day each week. If they go to Gen-pop, well something terrible usually happens right away to them.

Maybe Penn State doesn't have such a system. At least we can all hope they don't.

I don't understand Pervs. If the guy wanted to get it on with another guy why didn't he just find the local gay bars and go in and meet another adult who liked the same things. He could have experimented with different things and left the kids alone.

I'm sure there is and I meant no offense. It just seemed to me that if a guy wanted to do oral and anal sex with another guy he would get another guy to do it with. I would.
