Sandusky reportedly on suicide watch

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky will now begin the next phase of his life as a convicted child sex offender. NBC's John Yang reports.

Jerry Sandusky has been placed on suicide watch, one of his lawyers said Saturday, a day after he was convicted of sexually abusing children in what one juror told NBC was a clear case of guilt.

Jerry Sandusky is seen in this booking photo on Friday.

Karl Rominger said Sandusky was under individual guard at the county jail, known as suicide watch, and was apart from the general prison population, Reuters reported.

It was not clear if Sandusky had acted in a way that threatened his own life, or if the move was standard procedure in such a high-profile case.

Rominger reiterated that the former defensive coach for Penn State football will appeal the verdict, a process that can happen when Sandusky is sentenced in 90 days or so.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted Friday of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and faces a minimum sentence of 60 years in prison, NBC News reported.

NBC TODAY: Juror explains deliberations

Juror Joshua Harper told TODAY that the look on Sandusky's face as the guilty verdicts were announced was "confirmation" that they had made the right decision.

Sandusky had shown "no real emotion, just kind of accepting because he knew it was true," he added.

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact.

Ghosts of Sandusky haunt home where charity was born

NBC's Michael Isikoff has more on the next steps in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case.

As Sandusky was placed in a police cruiser to be taken to jail on Friday, someone yelled at him to "rot in hell!" Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on the courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

Sandusky is one 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility, a jail that is just seven miles from the Penn State campus.

Like other inmates there, he was allowed to bring a few items with him and is allowed visits from his family, friends and lawyers.

The jail did not say whether anyone had come to see him Saturday. At his home, his wife and three of their adopted children remained inside after returning there Friday night. The windows blinds and curtains were drawn.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Jerry Sandusky's victims, their families and an entire community are hoping to move forward after the former Penn State assistant football coach was found guilty of child sex abuse. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

In December 2010, assistant coach Mike McQueary appeared before the grand jury looking into the Victim 1 case. The presentment states that on March 1, 2002, at 9:30 PM, McQueary entered the locker room at the Lasch Football Building at Penn State and heard what he believed to be the sounds of sexual activity coming from the shower. He looked in the shower and "saw a naked boy, Victim 2, whose age he estimated to be ten years, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky."[17][18] Further investigation revealed that the correct date of the incident was actually February 9, 2001.[19] The next day, McQueary reported the incident to Joe Paterno, who informed Athletic Director Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, senior vice president for finance and business, who oversaw the Penn State police department at the time. Ultimately, the only action taken by Curley and Schultz was to order Sandusky not to bring any children from Second Mile to the football building — an action that was approved by school president Graham Spanier.[8][13] The identity of the boy remains unknown to the authorities.[20]

That is a sham, the guy deserves worse than he got, and doesn't have the balls. He only has balls for boys.

Was he thinking about suicide when he was in the process of destroying these children's lives? Time to man up!!

        Reply#793 - Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:08 PM EDT

Not to be mean spirited here, but why not let him committ suicide? He truly has nothing to live for and will never be set free; why not save the taxpayers thousnds of dollars and let him end it?

I wish I worked at the jail and they told me to watch him. I would put him in a cell with a hook in the ceiling then put a rope and ladder in the cell and see what he does. Thats my idea of a suicide watch

Don't they have a specific ward for criminals like him? I'm pretty sure he won't be raped and if he was it wouldn't matter. lets not forget that this is the kind of sex that he enjoys. The point of this arrest was to shed light on his crimes, and get his sick a*s out of the general population, which is exactly what was done so yea, personally i could care less if he's murdered by other inmates, dies of old age, or commits suicide. Justice was served, the system finally did something good etc etc.. Glad this pos perv is being punished, won't be seeing him i hell.

He will be sent to SCI Camp Hill and placed in a unit for sex offenders. Sadly the idea of other inmates getting him and making him a party boy is limited to TV. I mean that may still happen but he will be doing it voluntarily.

It is likely standard procedure to place an inmate on suicide watch that will be receiving what amounts to a life sentence. I have worked as an administrator for several jails and we have always done so. However, MSNBC in their sensationalistic reporting would never mention that.

Jerry will fit in well in the prison population because all the convicts are innocent.

Penn State,Pedophile Priest cleric enabler and Jehovah's Witnesses molestation unholy trinity big news same week.
Jehovah's Witnesses hit with $28 million sex abuse settlement Oakland,Calif.-Google it.

Many court documents and news events prove that Jehovah Witnesses require two witnesses when a child comes forward with allegations of molestation within the congregation.
It has also been shown that child molesters within the organization usually have not been identified to the congregation members or the public at large.
These people engage in a door to door ministry, possibly exposing children to pedophiles.
The Watchtower corporation has paid out millions in settlement money already.

I'm kind of torn. I really hate the idea of spending even one penny of taxpayer money on his sustenance, however, I also believe he does not even deserve the right to commit suicide; it would be done purely for selfish purposes (to terminate the wounded pride of being unmasked or the fear of what horrows await him in prison). It would not be due to guilt or regret; otherwise he would have done his victims a favor and killed himself a long, long time ago. Hmmm, it would have been great if his mother would have committed suicida prior to his birth. Anyway, I anticipate news of his murder by a fellow con very soon. Inmates have no fondness for pedophiles; they are called "short eyes" and are at the bottom of the pecking order. Why? Well, show me a single inmate who HASN'T been abused or traumatized by an authority figure. Well, fellas, here's your chance for justice. He's all yours!!!

I guess he doesn't like hearing the other inmates singing Pink Floyd songs to him.

                        OK, being very sarcastic.

Save all of us working tax payers a butt load of money - let him commit suicide - he certainly won't do well in prison, he doesn't like TAKING it up the butt, he is used to giving it. Let him go on to Hell where he will spend eternity, my prayer is having to suck the Devil's winky every minute of every day for ETERNITY. Anyone who believes what the KJV Bible says, would have to agree with me - cowardly Sandusky will get his Just Deserve from the Almighty King. Enough said.....
