Teen lesbian couple found shot in Texas park

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

Two teenage girls in a relationship were found with gunshot wounds to the head in a south Texas park, with one of them dying from her injuries, media reports say. Police were searching for their assailants.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday, said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who confirmed to msnbc.com details first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

Olgin, originally from Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to a hospital where she had surgery and was in serious but stable condition on Sunday, local NBC affiliate kristv.com reported. Wright said Chapa was still in the hospital on Monday.

Friends told kristv.com that the girls had been together five months. Wright said he didn’t have any information about their relationship, noting that “we understood from their friends that they were (in a romantic relationship). I know from … Mollie’s parents that they were very close.”

When asked if police had been able to determine if the girls' sexuality played any role in the shootings, Wright told msnbc.com: “That’s always something that we’re looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.”

He said they had been in communication with Chapa. He noted all indications were that “third parties” were involved in the assault.

“If we had a name, you know, we’d be having a different conversation right now. But we have not been able to gather enough information to identify a suspect yet,” he said. “It appears as if … this was not just a random attack but that’s something that we really have to develop over time.”

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, but they haven’t found the weapon. A resident living nearby reported hearing two loud bangs Friday before midnight but believed they were from firecrackers, the newspaper said.

The park, more of nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was generally frequented by visitors during the day. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

“We’re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,” he said of the girls. “It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline and that’s where they found.”

Friends of the girls gathered at a local high school on Sunday. Olgin's roommate, Samantha Garrett, told kristv.com that the fun-loving couple hadn’t gotten any negative responses to their relationship and could not think of why anyone would want to harm them.

The crime rate is low in Portland, a bedroom community of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

It wasn't an animal that did it to these kids, it was probably another pathetic, psychotic, braindead, facist right wing radical cracked teanut dope that backs Sister Sarah and Lyin Willardo the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter and Etch A Sketch Champion, like the guy that shot Gabby Giffords.

you know people are so quick to put God and his judgement out there. God didn't do this nor would he be okay with it. oh wait look im speaking for god cause he's my homie and we talk all the time. These girls were hurt and no one deserves to be punished for something that you people feel is the judgement of an entity that you dont even know exists. All you know is what you have been taught to believe in by an axiom that says it is seperate from religion. Chapa's life will never be the same and what she needs are positive things in her life to help heal the pain and anguish. Words do and can hurt. The LGBT communtiy doesn't choose this lifestyle because we want to be hurt you idiots, we love who we love and are who we are.

I live in Sinton Texas and I went to Sinton High School with Kristine Chapa and I also had the pleasure of knowing her Girlfriend Mollie Olgin they were the two most loving and undeserving of this there is no conclusion that they were targeted by so fag-basher

They were not the type to be, or we not even, involved in any wrong doings. This area is such a peaceful town, and for this to happen is so unexpected.

As a fellow gay friend of hers, we never had problems down in this area with our orientation. Sure the schools wouldn't allow Gay Straight Alliance groups; but gay-bashing was never an issue in the Coastal Bend Area. For an event to happen like this shocked us very much. We're all left with questions as to..why? There is absolutely nothing that could have made them upset someone to go to that extent of taking a sweet angel from our lives, but thankfully saving one. Things like this happen, we just really don't know why. And we can sit here behind our computers and bring politics and numbers, all that mumbo jumbo crap, but that's not going to do anything. I personally knew them. There is no such thing as "Crazy ex-girlfriends, boyfriends...ect." or anything like that. Down here in the Sinton as teens, we see that stuff happen in movies, because we're too young to have crazy people like that. For something like this to happen to a friend and it go global was unexpected for us. And to see the comments about a personal dear friend, whom I just graduated from high school with, have all sorts of comments written about the incident is just flat out crazy. To know that people have such negative and the nerve of some people. We are all sitting here clueless as to what the heck is going on, while I'm reading articles I have stumbled upon while on the internet about MY own friend, which I never expected would happen in my life. Until the investigation continues, and the the cops catch the heartless people who did this, we will never know the real truth as to what happened. Kristene is only able to move her left side as of right now, and if she were able to talk yet, the trauma from it all would be too unbearable to even recall the event. I felt the need to voice my opinion on an article for the first time, since this is someone close and dear to me; because the nerve some of some people to voice opinions that are on here. We know the truth down here. I know this will not get through any one anyways, because I know this world is one mixed up place. But I know I'll feel the relief of letting some people feel smaller about themselves thinking they know what they're talking about when they don't even live in the same state.

As someone who is part of a couple that has attracted homophobic attention, it seems pretty obvious that what likely happened is that someone who was probably either extremely homophobic/drunk/on drugs/not right in the head and may have even been looking for someone to hurt...may have just happened upon the girls while they were kissing, cuddling, holding hands, or may have just guessed from appearances that they were lesbians. We have attracted this kind of attention before and have just been lucky that none of these people had guns and there were other people around. Many homophobes will beat up or kill anyone obviously LGBTQ who wanders into their midst. They don't necessarily have to know or know of the victim before they attack...it can be an instantaneous decision and still be a hate crime...though it is also very possible that the attacker knew that the girls were a couple and had been looking for a chance to hurt them. I am going to guess that the attacker was male, most likely, because a lot of guys seem to be really threatened by any girl/woman who isn't into males...this has been the case with almost all the homophobic treatment we have received. Of course, this is all guesswork, it is up to the police to find out...I just hope they will do so honestly and not try to cover up any homophobia involved or try to keep it from being labeled a hate crime if indeed it is (and to everyone LGBTQ and our allies, it seems pretty likely and obvious that it almost certainly is). People always leap to saying this or that crime was not a hate crime...it just feels very suspicious when they do...it seems like they are saying that because they too are homophobic or racist or whatever. Automatically writing off the possibility of it being a hate crime is almost like saying there are no hate crimes. And I have heard that argument. From avowed bigots.

Most of the hate that I am reading from these posts seem to coming from gays. Maybe that is because you yourself are a hypocrite. Just an observation.

That's like a KKK member whining about how blacks don't like him.

Maybe if you stopped treating some Americans as 2nd-class citizens you wouldn't earn their hate.

Wake up. Religion spreads intolerance & hatred. My advice is for homosexual women or men to start carrying a weapon to protect your life, especially if you if you live in a blue state(republican). Don't take your life for granted & wake up dead. These people are absolutely nuts.

I live in Florida, which is currently a swing state, and there are some people who our old fashioned and dont belive in having a Gay relationship, not just Texas, alot of people equally feel this way about Gay people. It's not our place to judge any one being, but if someone dosent agree with something, they're are not IDIOTS, They simply dont agree with it. Also, the last thing people should do is carring guns around. It's already chaos in Florida with the Stand-Your Ground law. People kill people just because they felt threated. Gay people just have to accept that people dont agree with their lifestlye and bashing and violenc, not that I agree with it, will continue to happen.

                #371.2 - Thu Jul 5, 2012 1:59 PM EDT

Religion dosnt cause any of that. why is it so wrong to belive in a higher power these days? The people who commit crimes and kill people are the ones that spread lies. You on the otherhand, have been poorly informed. you need to wake up, sir!

All these people yelling about religion and condeming christans are completly mis-informed. because some people don't agree with Gays, lesbians, and trannies, dosent mean we are biggots, hateful, condeming. We simply just don't agree with their ways. The Bible says not to judege, for I( God) is the ultimate judge. as far as these two young ladies, it's very sad that this happend and the criminal should be brought to justice, but dont blame this on christans because the man who shot those two girls were not of God.

b32g, I have no problem with your belief that being homosexual is wrong. What I don't want is you trying to force your religious belief on others through force of law.

                        #373.1 - Fri Jul 6, 2012 1:43 AM EDT

The problem isn't judging, the problem is deciding to not support a thing. judging is a form of condemnation, so if a person condemns some one to die, THAT, is judging. Not saying I will not support homosexuality; that isn't condemning, that's me saying i will not support an immoral practice. it's like when those idiots say that we're judging others when we don't want our kids to go to school where homosexuality is encouraged and supported; the bible warns us that Satan is like a roaring lion seeking to devour some one, in not only immorality, but ultimately death. so for us, to allow, our children, to be exposed to something immoral, is not only wrong but foolish, because those people don't understand that they're tools of Satan, to corrupt and mislead others. so me not supporting something isn't the same as judging, its simply i wont support that, ever, because come armageddon, all will full practitioners of such things will be wiped away with the rest of willful sinning humanity.

then home school your kids, or put them in a private religious school and stop trying to impose your religious "come armageddon" baloney on the rest of us. you are trying to have your religion imposed upon others, plain and simple.

"tools of satan" , etc. what nonsense. but you can believe all the mystical nonsense you want, just stop trying to impose it on others.
