Rielle Hunter: 'John Edwards and I are no longer a couple'

Rielle Hunter, left, is shown Aug. 6, 2009, and former U.S. senator and presidential candidate John Edwards is seen May 10, 2012.

Rielle Hunter says she and former presidential candidate John Edwards have ended their relationship in a painful but mutual breakup.

Edwards will still be involved with their daughter, Quinn, 4 , Hunter said.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple," Hunter said on ABC’s “Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "We decided together to end it."

Hunter said she and Edwards were still a couple until late last week, as details from Hunter's memoir became public.

Asked why the relationship ended, Hunter said, "I think that's private." She said "media scrutiny" is “hard, and it wears you down after a while."

Edwards was not immediately available for comment to msnbc.com or other news organizations.

Her book, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me," was released Tuesday through a Dallas-based boutique publisher, BenBella Books.

In the book, The Associated Press reported, Hunter describes intimate details about her affair with Edwards, whose campaign hired her as a videographer, and sheds light on his thoughts as federal prosecutors mounted a case against him on illegal campaign contribution charges.

Prosecutors had accused the Democratic politician of masterminding a scheme to use about $1 million in secret payments from two wealthy political donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

According to Hunter, Edwards told her he would probably wind up in a low-security prison in Virginia if he was convicted, and Hunter said she planned to move nearby with their daughter if that happened.

A federal jury last month acquitted Edwards on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions but deadlocked on five related charges. A judge declared a mistrial, and federal prosecutors on June 13 said they opted not to retry Edwards.

Hunter's memoir also includes intimate details about her affair with Edwards as his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer. On Tuesday, Hunter said she felt it was necessary to tell the truth about her relationship, even if doing so was painful for her, Edwards or his other children.

Saying that she still loves Edwards, and that she believes he still loves her, Hunter said Tuesday that she was unsure of the future.

"We'll see what happens," she said. "I have no plans."

Quote from Ms. Hunter: "I have no plans."

Or moral compass.

Or decency.

Or quality.

Or self-respect.

lol what a POS.. and the best part is she seems very proud of the fact that she is human garbage. When did that become something to strive for? Regardless, I'm glad I missed the memo.

Hmmmmm....everything else about the affair was made public, but not the break-up. Sounds to me like it didn't end as amicably as she wants people to believe. I wouldn't be surprised if his kids made him choose after the way she bashed their mother. Perhaps Elizabeth Edwards got the last word after all.

And nothing shakes off the media scrutiny like writing a tell-all and making a media circus out of it. Is it fifteen minutes yet?

except for one thing....ambulance chasing lawyers do not hook up with gold diggers sluts in their open private lives. After I saw that interview, I knew she was "toast". All of her judgments on his behavior as she spoke for him and analyzed him as well as doing the same about his relationship with his wife went too far. She should have stated only issues regarding her. She crossed that line and made herself look well...uneducated and dumb. I can't imagine anyone buying her book. I predict it will be on the SALE tables at Walmart before the end of the year for maybe....a dollar. Still, few will buy it.

AreYouBuyingThis..........The same thing happens everywhere to everyone?? Who do you have in your pocket that can supply you with a couple million to hide your mistresses pregnancy? I know I don't.

Every minute someone is having an affair with a man who's wife has cancer. Getting pregnant and ruining the mans career.

Sure, people break up everyday but not very many that have a story that is in line for a made for TV movie. At any rate, if it is no big deal how did you get this far in the conversation? Why did you read the story? Why did you care enough to write a comment? BFD.

Wonder if Ms. Hunter knows that less that 10% of cheaters marry their mistresses? If she thought that getting pregnant would make him marry him she thought wrong. Now the child suffers the consequences of their irresponsible actions. Hopefully Edwards is providing well for Quinn.

Holy sh:t! I don't think I've ever witnessed so many debased and denigrating comments from a bunch of uptight, self righteous, arrogant prudes in my life. They doth protest too much, methinks.

Here's the facts:

According to the Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy, approximately 50 percent married women and 60 percent of married men will have an extramarital affair at some time in their marriage. And since it is unlikely that the people having affairs are married to each other in every case, the current statistics on the percentage of married couples who cheat on each other means that someone is having an affair in nearly 80 percent of marriages.

@S. Williams and akguy: It's the constant minimizing of these kinds of issues that is the reason that behavior like that described in this article is becoming more and more accepted by society. I do not feel that infidelity should be minimized or accepted. I feel that this case of infidelity and the personal pride that these two douchebags feel about their actions are the very definition of evil actions by evil people. I'm tired of people like you promoting these kinds of actions as acceptable or at least ignorable, when in fact the despicable and pathetic behavior described here and the people involved should be labeled as the garbage that they are and shunned accordingly. Instead of sending the message that it's OK to cheat on your wife as long as you have "weak character" or as long as the odds say it's ok as you each put it, lets instead send the message that this kind fo conduct is unacceptable. PERIOD.

I'm surprised that no one questioned the obvious: John Edwards gets a hung jury and the prosecutors do not wish to pursue. Within, what a week or two of that their "relationship" is over?

Rielle Hunter is very, very delusional. If she didn't get pregnant, I bet we would've never heard of her because Edwards would've dumped her hiney.

I think Edwards was only with her not just because of Quinn but because also of his trial. I'm sure their "relationship" started to cool after that trial.

She published her book and went public because I'm sure he dumped her. No one in their right mind (but, we are talking about Rielle Hunter) would've went forward with this circus unless she was dumped.

I think he wanted her to make it very clear they were over.

David "Proud card carrying member of the DC Madam's brothel" Vitter

Newt Gingrich (probably with him at Tiffiany's)

Mark "Doesn't weep for Argentina" Sanford

Larry Craig at the airport

Mark Foley in an online male chatroom

Rudy "I Love My New Dress" Giuliani

Ted "Homosexuality is NOT a sin when I do it" Haggard

Carl "I love sending bestiality porn on my NSFW computer" Paladino

Mark "I REALLY love my staff" Souder............................

Sigh. I'm too tired to put the other 100 up but yeah......Clinton could be with any one of them.

First thing first, for the douch-bag subject of this thread (you just KNOW she's reading it) YOU TWO WERE NEVER A COUPLE! You were just a booty call, nothing more. You played the game all wrong and you got dumped the the trash you are. OMG, I saw this whore just today on "The View". I'd bet my LAST dollar that John Edwards will carefully vet the next woman he's with, if he already isn't with someone because Rielle Hunter is C-R-A-Z-Y, with a capital crazy!!!!! Not that I am excusing his behavior for one nano-second but, I think she is just like the character Glenn Close played in the movie Fatal Attraction. He was in it for a roll in the hay and she got stars in her eyes and "fell in love" and she rolled his dumba$$ right down the old paternity path. By the time he knew she was truly insane, he knew he couldn't get rid of her because little miss ho, ho, ho wasn't going anywhere, not without bringing down the whole deck of cards. And isn't that just what happened? She was asked about how she could trust him after he denied being her baby daddy AND how she felt after he renewed his wedding "vows" with Elizabeth. And it's that last one that broke the whore's back. She was ok with him denying her child's paternity, she ADMITTED that, yep that was A-OK with her, but having another wedding ceremony!!!!! That whacko flipped out!!!!! She rationalizes her actions by saying that the marriage was over long before she came into the picture and that may have been the case, who knows? But little miss sperm container saw her chance and she took it. And all of the above and whatever more there is, isn't even the worst of it. The WORST is she used and uses a child to further her sicko fantasies. If she cared anything at all about her daughter, she would keep her stupid pie hole AND her vagina closed for the forseeable future. That girl will be able to go on the internet in a few short years and learn all about how she was conceived and what a dumb slut her mother is. To prove my point? At the end of The View, she was asked if her child and the younger Edwards children have a relationship and if her child knows the Edwards children as her brother and sister. The slime bucket said, of ALL things, that the children deserved privacy so she would not comment to that question. After she's been all over creation talking about her kid's relationship with their father, bashing their dead mother and trumpeting the sleazy affair for all this time, she had the freakin nerve to say THAT!!!!! I swear I wanted to kick her a$$!!!!! Too bad there's no death wishing allowed on the 'vine. TOO BAD!

and I wish the circus would come back to town and pick her up! Good comments on her View Interview. She was dancing as fast as she could. It almost seemed a bit rehearsed to me because as best they tried, the ladies of the View could not trip her up, although there was alot of "dancing" around issues.

She probably sat in front of the mirror trying to plan an answer for every question that could be possibly asked of her.

And what woman would have Dear John anyway? Remember she had sex with everyone he supposedly(and this woman is no angel either--has had a couple of other last names--if you Google her) slept with and him the same as obviously there was occasion where they did not practice safe sex. and what was that speech he made at the courthouse addressing everything to "my dear darling Quinn"...and not one peep about the other kids.

I am sure their will be plenty of offers from US Weekly, People and all the other "celebrity rags".

I wonder when someone will get Dear John to tell his side of these cartoon moments?

Hunter said on ABC’s “Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "We decided together to end it."

Interpretation: Edwards has realized how close he came to being thrown in prison. He probably has said to himself..."in order to have any worthy possibilities in politics or elsewhere...I have to dump her. I have to save my public image."

Hunter's memoir also includes intimate details about her affair with Edwards as his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer.

Edwards and Hunter have earned their immoral reputations.

What 2 snakes they both are!

Not exactly a theme for a great romance. Talk about destructive personalities!

        @Jeff,

It's not like the Democratic Party ever seriously embraced Edwards. His poll numbers were always very low. Just because someone calls themself a Democrat (or a progressive) does not mean that we all automatically like or approve of him. In fact, the mark of most Democrats is that we think independently, unlike republicans who spout the same mindless crap over and over.

For the record, I don't care who a President or presidential candidate screws, as long as it isn't me or the country (or in Bush's case, the entire world). Kennedy and Clinton were fantastic presidents with high libidos. While I don't approve of that, I would not throw the entire country under the bus for a president who does not fool around. However, the republicans will. It must really burn their butts that President Obama is such a faithful family man. It really blow their whole argument out of the water.

Are you saying you can put a pig in spats, but if you do, it is still a pig? Agreed.

            Observation:

A long time ago (40 years or so) someone cheating on his or her souse was grounds to be fired. The reasoning went something like, if you can't keep a promise made to your God, a preacher, your spouse, and a church full of witnesses, why should I as your employer think you will keep a promise to me or anyone else. Hmmmmmmm.

I am not so sure our "progressing" to the point of marriage being what it is today brings about anything but instability and fractures the family. Maybe if society made it more difficult to get married, and tried harder to keep people married, people would pay more attention to what is the most important decision they will make in their lives, rather than rushing in thinking if it does not work out, I'll just leave, which then becomes a self fulfilling prophesy.

Obviously Edwards, coiffed hair and all, was a big jerk. But in my book, the "lady" that slept with him was no better. What kind of trash sleeps with a man while knowing the man's wife is dying? Edwards place was by his wife's side, not by the side of a ________. I think America dodged a bullet by not electing this vermin to higher office.

Tiffany--that little girl is already nearly 4 years old. Hope Rielle has some plan for income after the child turns 18.

She already got a big fat chunk of campaign money, which I'm sure was used to buy her house. And he will be on the hook for child support. After that, that gravy train has left the station. So she might want to be honing up on her film making skills (if any!) because he looks already left the station too.

Charges of prostitution, taking money for sex and living off monies from sex, need be brought against Rielle! Her book is a confession to such crimes and lays out for any prosecutorial team all the evidence needed. If you go into a yard and steal a persons dog, there are criminal actions and prosecution results...............no difference to stealing another persons family ! Arrest the cocky and self righteous woman and jail her for these crimes .

She's is a home wrecker but you can't steal another person. They have to want to be stolen, lol. If he was committed to his marriage then she would have never had a chance. But as much as I can't stand John Edwards, its hard living with a person who is dying, watching them get sicker day after day so maybe he was seeking out comfort in her and just got caught up.

I agree with you. Everyone is so judgmental against this relationship, but my guess is that Elizabeth Edwards was responsible for some of it. She could not have been easy to deal with for so many years, she was very ambitious in her own right and pursuing her ambitions through her husband, then developing a terminal disease. Until you have walked in someone else's shoes, you just don't know. I liked both of them however I can see that they had problems in their lives.

Both of them have amply demonstrated to what depths they would sink. It is a shame that a child is caught up in this morass.

Over 50% of men cheat and nearly as many women do. Marriage is about ownership and it is a big joke. People do not own one another and they never will.

Looking at the murder/suicide rate amongst men and their families these days makes me think that marriage is an unrealistic expectation. The only way it works is if one of the people is willing to take crap off of the other.

                  #9.10 - Tue Jun 26, 2012 2:20 PM EDT

I believe in the santity of marriage and your marriage vows. John was weak. If this had been my husband, he would have laughed and said, gee I didn't know I was still attractive. In fact this did happen to him and that was the scenerio! The Edwards children have to read a book by her calling their mother a "witch on wheels". That's despicable. They know the suffering their mother had, with the death of her son and cancer. Does this woman have any feelings. I HOPE and PRAY, she brings that little girl up with Morals.

I don't think anyone here is absolving John Edwards from his sleaziness and I don't think anyone here thinks this is his first time at the whore store. He paying for all of it now, I'm sure. Why people are so angry towards this particular whore is that she simply does not have a decent bone in her body. Sleeping with a married man isn't news, even sleeping with a married man whose wife is terminally ill, although eminently sleazy, is not news. It's the getting pregnant, bashing the terminally ill wife before and after her death and proudly proclaiming to one and all, all the sordid details of the affair, that is the kicker. Nothing good can happen in her life. She just needs to slither away.

Yes it is hard being with a person who is dying but that experience, shared with love, understanding, truth, grace and sometimes, even anger well, really there are no words that can describe it.

Marinmom, if two people decide that marriage is for them, they and others should respect that.

Although I don't condone Edwards' actions in any way, I do think he was probably seeking physical comfort during a very stressful and painful time of his life. I think Hunter took advantage and then like any shmuck, he paid the price. I can't understand why these men cannot be smart enough to bag it. I doubt he wanted to become a father again at that point in his life. The fact that he trusted her to take care of it just proves what an idiot he is. I'm glad he finally rid himself of her. My sympathy is for his children!

I have no interest in reading or hearing anything this "lady" has to say about this matter. I did not watch her TV interview and will not buy or read her book. Unfortunately, I know I will still heard much more than I will ever want to know about this "sleazy" situation anyway. Maybe it was hard for John to watch his wife, Elizabeth dying -- and maybe she was not the easiest person to live with before her illness, i don't know -- but that is still no excuse -- Time for both Edwards and Ms. Hunter to just go away.

This is what happens when we pressure people to get married and have children. We make them feel like they are nobody unless they do. Women are so pressured by friends, family, co-workers to get married that they are willing to steal another woman's husband. The problem is that most people are not evolved enough to survive a marriage. We need more relationship survival skills before we attempt it, not just Cinderella fairy tales. Women need to know that there is a good chance their marriage will fail and that they should be prepared to support themselves and their children if necessary. Young women need to be taught that you can't do this on a hairdressers salary. You need serious skills and serious pay.

She felt it was necessary to tell the truth even if it was painful for .....his other children. Why would that be? What possible difference can it make for the entire world to hear her version of a very sordid story? But it can make a huge difference in pain and embarassment to his other three children who still have to live with this every day. Publishing this kind of self-serving trash is the stuff that bullies thrive over and use against other children.

I could care less if Edwards is humiliated but both he and Hunter should be very cognizant about the effects on his young children especially. Maybe they are no long a couple because she finally crossed a line abusing his other children.

I don't believe she "just happened" to get pregnant. She was no kid when this happened. If she was successfully able to avoid pregnancy up to that point I assume she, at least, planned to get pregnant possibly thinking it would make her a shoo-in for the position of the second Mrs. Edwards.

This loon thought they were a couple? Not to sound crude, but a pump and dump until the trial was over was probably more accurate. More likely: there was a possibility she would be more involved in the case so he was nice to her, gave him something to do when he was visiting his daughter and she's easy. Now that he is free, he will be dating many other women. The misery he got from his kids over what this loon wrote about their mother probably made him realize the occasional hook up wasn't worth it anymore.

In the hot and humid summers of the South, we have a certain type of mushroom that will sometimes spring up overnight. Even if you get rid of them, more will spring up as long as conditions are right. Rielle Hunter reminds me of those mushrooms.
