New York political leaders are voicing outrage at Egypt’s next president after he promised to fight to free a terrorist linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and a later plot to blow up New York City landmarks.
President-elect Mohammed Morsi told a crowd in Tahrir Square he wants convicted terrorist Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman released from a United States prison. “I see signs for Omar Abdel Rahman and detainees pictures,” Morsi said. “It is my duty and I will make all efforts to have them free, including Omar Abdel Rahman.”
Rahman is serving a life sentence for his role in a plot to blow up the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, the United Nations and other targets in the 1990s. He has also been linked to the first World Trade Center bombing that killed six and injured more than a thousand.

New York politicians blasted Morsi’s comments Friday.
“President Morsi’s offensive statements are an insult to the memories of the victims of the World Trade Center bombing,” Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said. “Sheik Rahman is a terrorist who planned to kill innocent Americans, rest assured he will stay right where he belongs -- in jail for the rest of his life.”
Egypt counts on billions of dollars in aid from the United States, and a State Department spokeswoman declined to comment on Morsi’s speech.
But Rep. Peter King, R-NY, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, called Morsi’s speech “evidence that he is an Islamist and a radical who cannot be trusted.”
"This is a disgraceful way for him to start his presidency," King added.

Workers on Feb. 26, 1993, rebuild the parking garage destroyed when a van containing explosives was detonated by terrorists in beneath the World Trade Center complex, resulting in the death of six and injuries of over 1,000 others.
Tri-state leaders said Morsi’s comments are raising serious questions as to what kind of leader he will be.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., called Morsi’s statement “…not only outrageous, but it is cause for deep concern about Mohammed Morsi’s respect for the rule of law and democracy. Any attempt to free this convicted terrorist must be met with swift condemnation.”
Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., said the U.S. will never free the sheik.
“Omar Abdel-Rahman is a terrorist with American blood on his hands and he will serve the rest of his life in detention," he said.
A spokeswoman for the Egyptian consulate in New York declined to comment. But NBC News Correspondent Aymen Mohyeldin, who was in Cairo for the speech, said Morsi went off script to make the comments and was likely making the statements for domestic consumption – not to anger the United States.

“The Muslim Brotherhood, and Morsi now, are taking the position he be released on humanitarian extradition more so than overturning his conviction,” Moyeldin said. Muslim Brotherhood leaders are saying Morsi does not plan to repeat the comments in his address Saturday and has condemned acts of terror against the West in the past.
Rahman is in ailing health in a North Carolina prison. A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment, except to say the "Blind Sheik" remains behind bars.

Big changes are in store for Egypt now that Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, once banned in Egypt, has won Egypt's first democratic presidential election. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Well, we all cheered when they got democracy. Now the people of Egypt are using it to seek to accomplish their will. As we saw in Iran, now Iraq, the Muslim Countries, once freed to express themselves, despise the USA. Is anyone surprised?
Democracy has it's positives and negatives. If the Egyptians want to have a Islamic theocratic rule ultimately leading to an undemocratic society then so be it, after all we also chose Bush and are reaping the fruits of unpaid $ 3 Trillion wars and a wall street and housing bust, bailouts etc.
I would wish that the Egyptians do realize that if it was not for the pressure exerted by the US Govt. on first Mubarak to leave and then the military rulers to let Morsi come to power they were probably headed from a dictatorship to a military dictatorship. So though Mubarak and other disctators in the region might have been a puppet of previous US administrations, it was a US Administration which helped democracy prevail in the middle eastern countries.
Not in the least but how dare those NY politicians slam President MANDATE's new best friend. Who do they think they are.
maybe you cheered but i didn't it was ridiculous to think the incoming so called government was going to be friendly to the US; be careful what you wish for- Obama was so happy to topple Mubarak, a friend of the United States; what a bunch of dummies in our government; it is downright scary.
Every country should have the right to determine its own destiny. With that said, it seems Egypt is moving in the direction we had all feared. Only time will tell.
The congress must take an immediate action! no more billions to Egypt starting the moment this mob leader takes the oath! don't wait for lame explanations like stupid for domestic consumption! ! the man has not been in office and he talks like this! I did expect that but not that soon! the Egyptian military must take an action before it's too ! they have the duty to protect Egypt from those enemies of Egypt!!!! they want to drag Egypt back to the dark ages!
Marilyn, I'm not so sure they're dumb. I think it was done on purpose. How many of our 'politicians' backed it? Look at what they're doing here. If you're not familiar with NDAA, you need to look into it.
Some speculate this Arab spring bull is being done to destabilize the area, and bring in extremist Muslims. Sure looks like it's working to me, as nothing good has come out of any of it. Iraq is still a mess. That was supposed to be done for their good, right? Look at Libya. And now Egypt.
O had Muslim Brotherhood at the White House?? And look at Dearborn Mi.
Then, there's what's happening in Az., and now Tx.
N.Y. is telling people what they can eat and drink. Some other city is telling kids they can't use chalk on sidewalks, and others are making it illegal to help the homeless, including shelters. Kids are being fined for lemonade stands. Cities are taking peoples rural homes for having chickens. Our government won't stop Monsanto and their GMO foods, even when we demand it.
It all sounds like a bad movie, but it's real. What a disgusting nightmare. I just hope every last politician who enabled all this to happen ends up with un treatable hives on their faces, and can't sleep for the rest of their lives.
Oh, c'mon guys.
This guy is no fool. He knows that the Shiek will never be released. He's just pandering to his constituency. Sure, if he could free him, he would. But, he cant and he knows it.
He would probably forgo U.S. aid if he could since it would free him to go after Israel as the Muslim Brotherhood vows to do.
The US Congress should immediately move to lay the groundwork of what Egypt's new President and Egypt's Military can expect if it continues with this rhetorical path. ALL aid which is not purely humanitarian in nature should be suspended immediately, and continue only if and when the Egyptian President retracts his statement, and he and the Egyptian Military reiterate their support for existing treaties including the peace treaty with Israel.
Foreign aid is a privilege, for the recipients; not a right. And it is the purview of the US to grant, and the for the US to withhold. These countries who look to the US for financial and material support need to demonstrate they understand the rules of the game, or we'll just take our ball and only play with their adversaries.
Have you got the picture yet! Nothing good will come out of Egypt now that dirt bag Muslim Brotherhood is in power. Look for increasing tensions, plenty of empty rhetoric ala Iran, and more sharia law imposed on the women of Egypt to return them to 3rd class citizens.
What?! Tell me what is happening in AZ. I live in AZ and everything is about the same except for the extreme hot temperatures.
Well, congrats Barry! So glad you cheered them on and helped bring him into office! Just another nail in your coffin come November 7!
Maybe countries shouldn't have the right to choose their own destiny. It always costs US soldiers' lives.
You've confused "the people" for those sheep controlled by the religion - Eygpt, Iran, Syria - prime examples of what happens when you combine religion and politics.
Atleast there was stability before, now the lunatics are charge and we helped by creating a power vacuum!.
Now Israel is under greater threat and we will be dragged in to help protect them
Heck even the US is under attack from within. I call Michigan the USA Muslim State ! Look at 2 days ago the cops in Dearborne refused to protect some Christians who were being attacked by 200 Muslims throwing rocks etc like Gaza !
They are dragging America into the dark ages like every Muslim country !
This was never about democracy !
Trickery drawing us into supporting the bad guys !
I wish the article explained how a "blind man" planned to kill Americans and was considered a credible threat that needed to be in Jail. Or was the problem really about what he said?
Now is anyone really surprised about this?
What is that clown wearing a Santa's cap? All he needs is a Santa suit.
So tell us Charlie, where do you get this crap? Do you have a reliable citation? Not what you heard on Faux or from Rush, something true. You people are shameless.
The boys in lock up should have a little fun with the bugger and then exterminate him like the insect he is.
"Every country should have the right to determine its own destiny."
if egypt continues to slaughter copts they have the "right" to do so? if egypt starts stoning women they have the right to do so? the egyptian government and the majority who voted them into office have the "right" to murder who ever they want to in their country since they have the "right" to determine their own destiny?

I am a Christian who is extremely concerned about the spread of Islam throughout the world. I believe that we will see a day when professing a belief in Christ will get you killed. It is already occurring in many countries as we speak. However, when I watch this video I have to wonder what those men were thinking when they entered an area that was occupied by peaceful muslims enjoying a fair, and they begin criticizing their religion and their prophet. Exactly what did they think was going to happen? Certainly those present weren't going to see the err of their ways and immediately convert to Christianity. Quite the opposite was accomplished as the people saw Christians as taunters bent on creating a hate-filled riot. I can't stand what Islam stands for, but I'm not sure that these men gave any better view of Christianity.
and the king of the south will push against the king of the north.....
This man the president of Egypt wants released , the Blind Sheik ,would murder you and all your family in a second if he had the chance. He did plan and support the murder of 6 innocent humans and the injury of over a thousand. And only because his plan went awry did he not succeed in murdering thousands of innocent people in the buildings in the WTC. And the leader of the Egyptians wants this monster released.
To call this president of Egypt a friend of the USA is an abomination. And to think that our present government abetted his election and betrayed our true friend , Mubarak , is breathtaking. If we had a government that truly represented the interest of the American people it would make a public statement to the new president of Egypt to the effect that the monster will be released when he has served his life sentence and not a second sooner and all economic aid to Egypt is forthwith terminated.
President Obama will make another Apology tour and free all of his fellow Muslims as he leaves office in January just like Billy-Bob did
President Obama will make another Apology tour and free all of his fellow Muslims as he leaves office in January just like Billy-Bob did
i'm just curious, were those "christians" yelling that "muslims worship satan" or something like that?
never mind,
one so-called"christian" idiot was holding a sign that said "mohammed was a false prophet and a murdering child molester" at the michigan arab festival
serves the effing brainless idiots right, they're as bad as the taliban
"Tri-state leaders said Morsi's comments are raising serious questions as to what kind of leader he will be."
They probably should have thought of that BEFORE they all opened their mouths and decreed that MUBARAK had to go.
Where do we get off, telling OTHER COUNTRIES what to do?! No matter who's in Office - it seems they always think they know what's "best" for the rest of the world.
Sure Mubarak wasn't the greatest "President" (and was just as corrupt as the rest of them!) but at least non-Muslims weren't persecuted and women weren't treated like property!!
How happy will the Egyptians be if their country spirals into another full-blown Iran scenario?
They can kiss tourism dollars good-bye. And what else will they have left, but a whole pile of sand ... Am so glad to have visited the Pyramids (and the Middle East) way back when!!
What exactly was portrayed in that video, coming right down to the nuts and bolts of it?
TWO OPPOSING FACTIONS that have NO business being anywhere near each other! THIS IS WHAT STARTS WARS, GANG! TWO OPPOSING FACTIONS! Never mind that both sides are completely brainwashed and wrong, they're willing to attack one another without any forethought of the consequences. It's no longer about right and wrong- it's officially become faction-based politics of opposing sides that will eventually blow up in each others (and everyone else's) faces.
When are these lame-brained, warmongering, religious zealots going to realize that NOBODY KNOWS THE TRUTH! Not the Muslims, not the Christians, not the Satanists, Wiccans, Bhuddists, Hairy Krishna's (sic), Athiests, etc. etc.
The only truth that should be broadcast across the planet is that NOBODY knows the truth!
As far as this knothead Egyptian MB president goes: Hey gang, don't blame us- we told you so!
Obummer!!!
I watched the youtube vid. I am not a supporter of Islam, far from it infact, but I have to admit that they went about it the WRONG way. They were clearly asking for it. In this case I can almost excuse the people for throwing garbage at them. Now if this was unprovoked and they started throwing stuff at random then I could see what you are getting at.
Typical Darwin Award Honorable mentions I am afraid.
La, la la. Ignoring the trolls.
That said, it didn't take long for The Brotherhood to show it's colors. Their word is about as reliable as a snake-oil salesman. I was going to make a Romney comment but he's not even close to agenda these guys have.
And don't be so down on Obama. The U.S. government under both parties has a long history of trying to help out other countries only to have them turn against us. We helped China and allied Russia in WWII. We helped Iran, Iraq, a whole long list. So don't act like this is unique and pile on Obama. The efforts to help a lot of these countries comes from the U.N. and European nations as well. And if we aren't in there, there are a lot of countries willing to fill the void because there is oil and oil is power. Sometimes it helps. Remember the invasion of Kuwait and Desert Storm? Lots of people wanted to stay out of it.
Mubarak had no chance to stay in. It would have been a civil war and that would have meant another oil country in ruin. So it's better to try and help than to sit on our thumbs while Egypt crumbled. Isolationism has been tried before and the consequence was WWII.
Besides, there are people there that know who the real enemies are. And it's better to have them as an inside source of support than to leave them to the wolves. The more radical the Brotherhood becomes, the more we'll need them.
Not one military strategist amongst those here posting. Here is a question for thought, what do you do as a major nation with strong military power when you wish to move, detain or gain control of a foreign goverment or nation when those in the country's highest seats of power are your supposed strategic ally or keeping themselves indirect opponents? You have them removed from the seat of power so another person may be placed there and hopefully one that instigates a military resolution. You frightened rabble-rousers and naysaying told-ya-soes should learn from history. The only major move foreseeable in deposing the dictators in north africa is to allow a power vaccuum and enemy control scenerios which will eventually allow military conflict and as history shows us, Rome (the catholic and money power seat of global dominance), which we can refer to now as the USA, to once again sieze control from egypt to carthage. Every come-up nation of power has sought the empire, so why whine when we are on the way to achieving destiny?
well egypt want the USA out well that is fine by me stop sending them money and offering aid that is just fine with me . I am tired of watching out tax dollar go there and for what so they can scream they hate americans well I would rather put that money back into our country and turn our backs on them . stop letting them come into our country for school and to live here kick them all back to eygpt and be done with it . I see what is coming and it will be catistrofic (SP) what is going to happen there. they think they had it bad before LOL they aint seen nothing yet . I wash my hands of it !
Keep the sheik in jail, for heaven's sake! (Is there any doubt he will stay there?)
The funny part is, in a politicians sort of way,
that one wonders how many of these politicians in this article
are supporting the terrorist group MEK.
The answer is likely PLENTY!
In case you missed it there is crime, bribery and treachery afoot in Washington (and elsewhere, politicians are everywhere!). The terrorist group MEK is being given material support by terrorist supporters here in the US.
MEK has been labeled a terrorist group since before most reading this were born. They targeted and killed Americans.
Even Bush razed against them. In fact, support for MEK was at or near the top of the list of reasons for INVADING IRAQ!
http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/infocus/iraq/decade/sect5.html
But now the zionist regime has been arming and training MEK so our lap dog politicians are choosing their loyalty. "Killers of Americans"..."supported by Israel"..."killers of Americans"..."supported by Israel".
Guess where the loyalty of our politicians lies.
GO AHEAD, GUESS.
I see nothing wrong with Morsi asking. It is the way it was done, Actually it hasn't been done. Morsi "in a speach said he HAD (not that he did yet) to ask for........." Morsi is not a polished politition yet. He should not have said anything about it at all. It is a matter to be discussed between him, the US Ambassador, and the President of the US. As for the Senators of NY, I understand your feelings, but it is a matter over your heads and out of your hands. It would have been best to not say anything at this point in time. Wait for it to happen and than appeal to the higher authority. As for me in Texas Rahman is a war Criminal and must serve his time but if Egypt wants they can have his remains.
Nuke the pyramids!
Only a fool thinks the U.S. can control the world. Democracy or dictatorship is for each country to choose, not us. We can, as we did in WW2/Korea/Iraq/Afghanistan, only hope that they make the right choice.
$Billions in aid to Egypt? And just what do WE get in return? Is there some justification for this when our economy is teetering? Our debt and deficit so high? And now, we get a radical Egyptian regime pursuing the release of a terrorist?
Cut 'em off, cut 'em off, end the entitlements to Egypt!
Weak LIBERAL DEMOCRATS would not give him old sparky and condemn him to die by lethal means in our ( best in the world ) criminal system . And for you LIBERALS the reason we incarcerate or put to death so many cretins is because THEY DO THE CRIME !!!!!
What do you expect people.!!!!!! Thats Obama's buddy who he supported. The Muslim Brotherhood has ties to this administration. Morsi has been visiting Obama a few times plus Obama has plenty of talks on the phone with this new leader of Egypt. Maybe if you people weren't so closed minded or narrow minded you can open your eyes and see right through this. The Muslim Brotherhood has huge ties to Hamaas and other radical groups and for this President of ours who he supports Morsi tells me that Obama is no good by the company he keep or associates with.
It was clear to anyone who knows anything about the Egyptian people...that a move toward democracy would bring the Muslim Brotherhood to power and Islamic law. It was a "no win" situation for the US and the President should not have made any statement. How do you ask Mubarak to step aside, knowing full well that Islamic law would be the result, sending womens' rights and religious freedoms into extinction?
When they violate the Camp David Accord, all aid to Egypt should be halted. Not because we support Israel...but because the Accord has been violated.
The Egyptian military is resisting the Muslim Brotherhood transition to power. The Egyptian military leaders know that the MB will, in time, attempt to move against Israel. And, Israel will destroy their forces, without US support.
Tell us please, what exactly did Obama do to topple Mubarak? Some of you posters literally make me want to vomit with the sheer retardedness of your comments. Your pathetic attempts to link Obama to every article, coupled with your willful disregard for anything even remotely resembling the truth makes me wonder if you actually believe what you spew or just acting the fool intentionally.
OK, here you go, Islamist a$$holes in power, now keep defending the Syrian "rebels", which are the same kind of Islamist a$$holes.
What you are seeing going on in Egypt precisely illustrated the two greatest fears of the Founding Fathers of this country --- the pernicious influence of religion and the dreaded democracy. The Founding Fathers had seen the Roundheads in England and the Catholics in Rhode Island and the French Revolution and many other situations where either religion or "democracy" were destructive of government.
That is why the Founding Fathers wanted a "high wall" between Church and State. You have to remember that the vast majority of the Founding Fathers were only nominal Christians. Most educated men of the day, as were the Founding Fathers, were Deists who believed in a "clockmaker God" who put things in motion then abandoned them. The Christians in North America were primarily Calvinists who seriously downplayed the role of Christ in Christianity, believing that Christ was only a "pseudopod" of God, sent to deliver a message, then reabsorbed into the Body of God. They did not believe that Christ was anything special, just a vessel for a message. This is far from what modern Christians purport to believe.
They were also scared to death of democracy. The idea of ignorant, ill-educated people making decisions in government would have made them throw up. Ambrose Bierce defined "democracy" as "four wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch." They had seen democracy at work in the French Revolution when the masses killed scientists and philosophers along with the wealthy. This is why they made every office in government --- President, Vice-President, Cabinet officers, Senators, the Supreme Court, and all important civil service jobs as appointed and not elected directly by the people. The only officials to be directly elected were the House of Representatives and they were given the shortest possible term of office. And the House was not set up that way to further democracy, but to give slave-holding states more power in Congress than non-slave states in order to perpetuate slavery which they viewed as economically necessary for the agrarian United States to compete with an industrialized Europe.
But watch what is happening is Egypt. It will show you why the Founding Fathers wanted religion kept absolutely out of government. They knew that religion, when it gets power, says it will use that power to help people, but actually it always uses it to hurt other religions/denominations/sects. You will also see that the closer Egyptian comes to the will of the people, the more a captive of the most strident and right wing voices it becomes.
The place where all this will come to a head will be in how the Coptic Christians (about 15% of the people and 25% of the economy) will be treated and how Israel will be dealt with. Rhetoric doesn't count --- watch for concrete actions that tell you what is actually happening in privy councils.
WOW!! all the big worry, in a hurry!!
Everyone here should see what is really going on here, especially since WE are in the middle of our own Presidential race.....
Mitt screams: "Repeal Obamacare!" (Probably not gonna happen...)
Obama screams: "Raise Taxes On The Wealthy! / Tax Big Oil" (Probably not gonna happen...)
Morsi Screams: "Free Abdel-Rahman!" (Probably not gonna happen...)
It's All Pandering.... Most of you are intelligent beings, see this for what it is.... Just pandering.
The big Muslim "World Takeover" conspiracy theory has not just begun...... You think he's gonna risk all the U.S. cash flowing into his country??
I'm Just Sayin'...
Finally somebody says something informative and intellectual. I've heard that to vote you also had to be a land owner. Do you know if this was true? Thanks, Chris.
@Kort Barlow
This is from the unholy Wikipedia, but it is representative of what I have been consistently hearing:
Egyptian 2011-2012 Voter Turnout
BTW, No requirement to own land...
While Chris-74939's comments are insightful for us, is it our right to say what form of government other countries peoples choose? We do have the right to TRY to make others like us but ultimately it's up to them to decide whats right for themselves. That being said, there are financial and political consequences to whatever form they choose.....
No one countries form of government is EXACTLY like any others...
Srry, Bad link...
first of all there is no need to worry this guy is not going anywhere. he is going to rot in that prison cell ok next issue....
How long will our Amrican stuipidity in international affairs continue? We betray our allies and then wander about the result. Why we interfere in these countries with our stupid advise and help the uprising led by our enemies?
Now we keep paying the aid money to the people who hate us and want to destroy us!
When will we learn?
We must stop all aid to Egypt so that may be military would overthrow the terrorist govenment and establish the dictatorship - which is the only form of government these people understand.
And then we should lear our lesson and stop trying to enfororce our brans of democracy in these countries - they need at least 300 years to become humans.
This Morsi dude is a rookie! He should take lessons from Romney. Say what you think your crowd wants to hear, even if it changes day-to-day or hour-to-hour. BUT, remember to keep it vague! Use code words that your audience is familiar with. No specifics!
Any big country is supporting evil terror muslim brotherhood , is an evil like muslim brotherhood and any president is supporting muslim brotherhood terror group is an evil like them
Minoru Yamasaki was one of the finest Architects ever to live. He teamed up with the remarkable and innovative structural engineer Leslie E Robertson to design two of the most unprecidented, elegant and functional buildings the world had ever seen. The World Trade Towers were not just a couple of buildings, they were a unique departure from the curtainwall style design that had been evolving since the early innovations in highrise construction.
America was the progenetor of the modern highrise. From the clock tower in meccah to the Burj in Dubai, all modern highrises are descended from early American designs. There were previous influences, from the lighthouse in Alexandria, to the Eifel tower in Paris, but the construction of the highrise with effeicient use of engineered structure, elevators, plumbing, electric grid, powered ventilation and exterior curtainwalls allowed for a building to have a large fully functional interior space. One acre of land now became used as 100 acres of land.
The departure of the Trade Towers was that the curtainwall was sacrificed so that the main structure was the exterior walls. This meant less views to the outside, but far more unobstructed interior space. The were the tallest structure's in the world, and set an example for 21st century engineered inhabitable construction. The simplicity of form and impressive grand scale was intended to impress the viewer, like the Pyramids or Oblisks of ancient Egypt.
Yamasaki's name will be enshrined next to names like Hemiunu, or Sneferu.
For Omar Abdel Rahman, Muhammad Atta, Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri, Qutb, The Luxor Massacre Terrorists, Morsi and all the other Egyptian "Islamic Brotherhood" junkies, I have little more than unveiled scorn and contempt to offer, and I am sure that the history books will offer the same. Morsi's plea to release Rahman is at least an honest statement, and clearly an admission to terrorist sympathies.
I hope everyone remembers the Camp David Accords which are binding on the US as well as Egypt and Israel. The agreement requires the United States requires several billion dollars worth of annual subsidies to the governments of both Israel and Egypt, subsidies which continue to this day, and are given as a mixture of grants and aid packages committed to purchasing U.S. material. From 1979 (the year of the peace agreement) to 1997, Egypt received military aid of US$1.3 billion annually, which also helped modernize the Egyptian military. (This is beyond economic, humanitarian, and other aid, which has totaled more than US$25 billion.) Eastern-supplied until 1979, Egypt now received American weaponry such as the M1A1 Abrams Tank, AH-64 Apache gunship and the F-16 fighter jet. In comparison, Israel has received $3 billion annually since 1985 in grants and military aid packages."
If the US cuts military aid to Egypt, it will be forced to cut aid to the Israeli military. If the US refuses to sell replacements, armaments or parts for American-supplied military gear, it must do the same to Israel. While Israel has reneged on much of the Camp David Accords vis-a-vis Palestinians, both the US and Egypt have been quite good about sticking to the Accords. If the US reneges, the world will have further confirmation that we are "fair weather friends", opponents of true democracy, and not to be trusted.
@Kort Barlow,
Voter eligibility was done then as it is now --- on a state-by-state basis. Most states required that you be a land owner or pay a poll tax, which initially was a shilling a year. Poll taxes and land ownership requirements for voting stayed around until after the Civil War when they are badly abused to keep "carpet baggers" and freed sl;aves from voting. In Alabama the poll tax for a Negro was $500 a year, but the exception to the poll tax was that if your grandfather voted, you were exempt from the poll tax. This is where the term "grandfathering in" came from since it allowed whites to skip the poll tax that blacks had to pay. They were grandfathered in.
In most southern states, slave owners were allowed to cast 2/3 of a vote on behalf of every adult male slave they owned. This was justified by the apportionment rule that the Founding Fathers put in the Constitution in order to perpetuate slavery.
History is fun and interesting. Made up crap is not.
Cut off aid to Egypt and Israel, leave Rahman in prison. When he dies, wrap him in a pig skin and leave him in the sun for two days before dumping him in the sea.
I'd prefer they shoved a pork chop in his mouth, a fireman's axe up his @ss, and bury him at Ground Zero. Facing Mecca of course.
We wouldn't want to be seen as too unsympathetic.
Lets Trade Rahman for Schumer. Egypt will get the raw end of that deal. We are suckers thinking we could control other people. Awwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pork is an abomination to muslims only if it is used by choice.
What did you expect all you geniuses in the State Department and Congress.
Harry...of course you are right! What the hell did our dufus president and state department think would happen? We are now watching another country fall into muslim hell.
Just one more problem this corrupt, lying, America hating, amatuerish, piss poor excuse for a leader, will leave for the next person to hold the job. What a disaster for this country. It will never be the same.
That's why we pay them good salaries, great benefits, and lifetime retirement. In the case of elected officials lifetime retirement after two years, allowing for double dipping almost immediately. Egypt gets 8 dollars from everyman, woman, and child in the United States. If we are going to control or influence an area I expect a benefit. I don't think any President can dictate what to do regarding foreign policy. We have three,3 branches of government involved in those decisions, and those decisions can be changed and amended by any of them. What you should ask is what is being accomplished by our past and present foreign policies?
This was a free and fair election. Period. The Carter Insitute pretty much shut down all legitimate objections by certifyinbg that, while there were minor discrepancies, overall the election was fair, free, and representative of the desires of the people.
But several points:
1) Morsi is taking over a country without a sitting Parliament and without a Constitution. But it has a powerful and entrenched military and a powerful entrenched bureaucracy who will pull all the strings.
2) The more religious Morsi acts, the more likely the military will be to a) stack Parliamentary elections with pro-military "winners" and b) the more anti-Islamists that they will load the Constitution-writing panel with.
3) The military sees itself as a "guarantor" of secularism on the Attaturk model. In reality they are a very powerful military, but the top leadership is extremely corrupt. They will probably allow some Islamic influence as long as it does not interfere with military "cash cows" such as US military aid. The moment it touches the generals' purses is the moment that secularism will return.
4) The vote for Morsi was not so much a vote for Islam in government as it was a backlash against Mubarrak's corrupt and brutal military dictatorship. Morsi's opponent was a corrupt military skank with roots going back to Nasser. This was why many young educated people voted for Morsi --- they feel that the military is responsible for high unemployment among educated youth.
5) But one solid voting block for the Muslim Brotherhood is the poor. While Americans think of it as some sort of terrorist organization, Egyptians see it very differently. Most of the MB presence is in charity, medical care and education. They run dozens of shops where the very poor can buy meat below costs (an implementation with the same goal as our food stamps), they run free clinics in poor neighborhoods, they provide free primary education in poor neighborhoods, they greatly subsidize students in higher education. In fact, the emphasis on education is so great that almost every lawyer and judge in Egypt is a member of the MB.
It is a pretty good bet that the Morsi is more transitional than powerful. I am sure that he well knows that he can almost instantly lose several voting segments --- women, the military and its supporters, Copts, and secularists. I would suggest reserving the hate-filled rhetoric until after Egypt has a functioning government with a freely elected Parliament and a functioning Constitution.
Obama - the 6 trillion debt, no jobs and no promises fulfilled creator president. I made a mistake voting for him + relatives and friends ... sorry 1 term... he is the worst president in US history.
Obama 2012
@ gogobill777
Here is some facts for you, hope it's not hit you on the face:
2009 - $1.4T - they projected a $1.2T deficit before Obama ever took office. Bush signed off on that with not even a threat of veto. Bush's biggest parting gift to the US economy? A 17% increase in government spending in 1 year! $185B spent on stimulus.
2010 - $1.3T - the biggest problems here: 1.2% decrease in income tax revenue and 3.4% decrease in payroll tax revenue along with a 34% (!!!) increase in unemployment benefits. $420B spent on stimulus.
2011 - $1.3T - very little change from 2010 - same low tax revenue, about the same unemployment. $135B spent on stimulus.
Most of the deficits seen in the last 4 years has been due to the poor economy, not Obama's stimulus program. Obama's stimulus program was to total $720B over three years. Actual cost will actually be about $800B over those three years. So there wasn't any $5T in stimulus. The $800B in stimulus that was spent is credited by the CBO to have added 0.9 million jobs in 2009, 3.3 million jobs in 2010 and 2.6 million jobs in 2011.
Making massive cuts in spending to reduce those deficts over the last 4 years would have made the recession much worse. Not spending the stimulus would have made unemployment worse. Yeah, the national debt is not good, but trying to cut it all at once, right now while the economy is still weak, will lead to even worse economic times.
Gogo...right, I'm with you, never again would I vote for this loser..nothing but waste, lost jobs, debt, government control. If not the worst president Obama is sure as hell in a tie for second!
gogoboll-Actually this president has done a lot of what he promised to do. Quit lying. He has been obstructed since the Republicans took the house.
I bet if I went to Egypt and blew a building up and killed people the new President wouldn't bend over backwards to have me released! Political Opinion: Get us out of North Africa and Eur-Asia. We have no business there not even the oil. Let these nations settle their disputes in their own way and time. For 5000 years they have fought for something that is none of our business and will continue to fight until the very end. Why does the USA wish to impose our government system on others?
Oh, puleeeez, Cuong.
I'm sick and tired of every Democrat, including you, using, as an excuse for these failed policies, the statement "well, it would have been WORSE without Obama". B.S.
You go to a mechanic and he bills you for a repair and then, when it's still broken, he bills you again, saying o the first repair "well, THAT needed to be replaced as well."
NO one has a problem with helping corporations IN ORDER FOR THE CORPS TO HELP PPL AND THE ECONOMY. Instead, what has happened AND CONTINUES TO HAPPEN , is that the corps get all the help, and the individual is NEVER better off, and the economy continues to tank. Further, SO many policies to protect foreign gov's and corp's. NO ONE gets that we cant BUY affection or prosperity.
Time for new blood. New ideas.
@ Jeff-573598
Oh please, at least learn how to spell right.
Over 30 years of bad policies and one of the worst economic of all time and you expect to fix it in less than 4 years?
Let's me tell you something, my dad left me 20k debt and he ran away, 5 years later I still pay for that debt and that is only with interest alone.
Get an education and do some research, then come and argue with me. Also, get some facts since obviously you don't have any.
I'm sorry, Cuong. (More like "Cheech and Cuoung). I should have realized that English was not your first language; hence your mistake about my spelling of "please" v. Puleeeez"
NOT very hard to understand your dad's leaving, either.
Jeff
Careful, you're showing your ignorance. You need to back off and try to act civilized for once in your obviously miserable life. Since you get all your news from Fux and we try to make allowances for your brand of ignorance but when you attack others you cross the line and deserve a smack down. You need to grow up, read a book and try to act like a human being instead of a mindless thug.
Dennis.
Take a look at my post 3.6.
Then look at the vitriol of cuong in 3.7 - did my post attack him ?
I'm not the thug here. Go frog yourself and mind your own business.
Here you go thugly.
You are not a very decent person. I will not mind my own business. People need to stand up against things like you. Try to be at least a little civilized.
I agree Dennis and have reported him several times, they need to add ignore author like many of the other boards are doing, that way we don't need to read the same BS from the same morons blowing smoke all the time.
@ Jeff-573598
So, what fact did you use in your post again? I seem to miss on that.
Oh, right, nothing at all, just your biased opinion.
You should take a look at CBO, one of the few credible source unlike Fox News which banned in Canada.
Funny you have nothing constructive in your post except attack others directly. And yes, English is my 3rd languages and I seem to be doing well unlike you.
Denise:
Well, fortunately, in this instance, we CAN see which came first, the chicken or the egg.
My last sentence in 3.8 was in response to the vitriol in 3.7.
My 3.6 had nothing insulting or objectionable. I stand by my response.
Ourdoc:
You've not "reported " me before. You're obvioulsy as literate as cuong in failing to see that there is more than 1 Jeff on here.
And, speaking of cuoung:
You seem to be implying that I claim to be stating "facts" - gee, find ONE time I used the word "fact" in my posts. Of COURSE they are my opinions, backed by logic.
And, finally, I dont doubt one bit that English is your 3rd language....it shows by your lack of comprehension.
Good night y'all.
@Jeff-573598
You seems to have reading comprehension from the start.
What I posted are facts, yes FACTS from CBO. However, what you posted are biased opinion with nothing to back it up. Your logic is stemmed from your opinion which have zero fact at all.
You then attack me directly because obviously again you have ZERO FACT to back up your statement again.
Here is a quote for you, it is fitting:
"When the laws are with you, argue with the laws. When reasons are with you, argue with reasons. However, when neither are with you, attack the person directly".
And yes, that's all you have been doing, biased opinions with NO FACT and you attack people directly to try to make your point.
If only the republicans had a candidate worth voting for. I do not believe obama will go with releasing this terrorist!!!!
BW...you are only worried if Obama releases this terrorist?.......He has caused this Arab spring all over the middle east and has replaced those we could control with Radical jihadist! He has changed our country into a fast becoming third world power. He has weakened our economy, our military and our constitution and the scary part is that most fools who voted for him are still hailing him as some sort of messiah. No...he is the Devil!Perhaps those that worship Obama also worship the Devil or they are just so blind they can not see this is happening.
@Coung, everything you said is very much right on. I'm sure this goes without saying those guys just run off the bull that they feed one another. Strange thing happened last week, Romney was doing his usual song and dance ruteen saying there were 0 jobs. 4 people I know went to work one is my daughter. and I know two of two other people returning to work after the 4th. Remember that hard nose airheaded Republicans will never accept the truth about anything. You can ingage a good conversation with a Republican that is informed he will agree with you and still try to put a republican spin on it.
@Cuong et al: If we accept the numbers from the CBO, we must accept the numbers of the BLS. The average initial jobless claims is 386,000 per week. If you multiply that out, the net is less people employed today than in 2009.
The stimulus was poorly administered. It went to funding "green" industries (of which $1B has been lost through bankruptcy) and extending monies to the states to provide funding for teachers, police officers and firefighters (this only worked for one year).
I understand Keynes theory. I understand that government stimulus is needed during a recession to spur growth. But, our economy is driven by the consumer. The consumer accounts for 70% of the economy. Government sector jobs have to be supported by more than a dozen private sector taxpayers. Nothing was done to spur private sector growth by the consumer. Some will argue that the payroll tax decrease did. But, the payroll tax decrease was a reduction from social security, which is paying out more money than it is taking in.
Republicans are wrong in their approach that corporate taxes should be reduced. Unless they are reduced and deductions are eliminated. Tax witholdings across the board should be lowered (after all, nearly half of all taxpayers receive what they pay in every year). This will increase spending throughout the year.
Any president (R or D) cannot make speeches that threaten broad sectors of the economy. For instance, Wall Street bankers ("Fat Cats"), "Big Oil", "Dirty Coal", Bad Insurance Companies, Bad pharmaceuticals etc. A natural reaction is to be leary of what policies are going to impact those businesses. Coal has taken the brunt of this so far. Coal is mined in areas of the country where some of the poorest people live. Also, it is an area of the country where education is among the lowest in the country. To demonize coal is to impoverish those communities. Where is the compassion for them? There is more compassion for "frogs" and "fish" than for the people in these communities. But, hey, they are a small voting block...not as big as conservationists and environmentalists...so they don't matter. Right?
This country needs a business summit. Where big business meets with politicians to construct a plan that moves this country and economy forward. This is not the time for ideology or promoting political agendas at the expense of economic growth. Our country depends on it.
Jeff, did you miss Cuong's statistics or do you just choose to ignore them? The facts, as stated, are pretty much dead on. The truth sucks, but it's not necessary to make it worse by ignoring and twisting it just because you don't like it. What Cuong failed to mention was that Bush II inherited a SURPLUS when he entered office and, in just over a year, managed to turn that surpluss into a $13 B DEFICIT. This due, almost exclusively, to Bush/Cheney war policies. It's easy to point fingers and say "the 'other guy' is wrong". It's far more difficult (and personally hmbling) to do a little soul searching before you start castigating the "other guy". If you don't like Democrats or Republican and love the 'other guy' all blindly because of some political line you bought into once upon a time, maybe it's time to step back and really, really consider what you believe in and why rather than regurgitate the thoughts of some talking head somewhere.
Not all Republicans are wrong and not all Democrats are right, and vice-versa. Everyone is right and wrong in varying degrees and based solely on our own concepts of right and wrong. Some Democrats are more conservative than some Republicans and some Republicans are more liberal than many Democrats. And the political alliances are continually changing. In fact, in the time of Lincoln, the Republican Party was considered the Liberal party!
In all things, a good rule to follow: "Think before you speak." Or, better yet, many have ignored the responsibility to think and should probably just keep their mouths shut.
@Cuong,
I would add that much of the difference that the Republicans point so proudly to was that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were conducted entirely off the books and on borrowed money. Obama ended "off the books" multi trillion-dollar adventurism. The current estimate for the fully booked costs of the second Gulf War and Afghanistan post Bora Bora is now as $11 trillion with a large portion of that due to the horrendous number of vets with TBI, PTSD, and traumatic amputation.
Here's your election news for the day: According to the most accurate prediction site on the web, the current estimates for November 6th are 67.9% of Obama winning and 32.2% of Romney winning and these numbers do not reflect recent enough polling to see the effects of the GOP's stunning losses in the SCOTUS.
I can't post the name of the web site because either MSNBC or rabid righties always collapse and then delete the post. I actually suspect that it is MSNBC and they see it as averttising for a competitor (which it is not.) So just send me an e-mail via "contact the author" and I'll send you the link. It's the best political blog I have ever seen for people who love hard data and good analysis.
Arab spring....just a "feel-good" media sound bite. What a disaster.
"Springtime for Hitler"
I hope Morsi was just having an Obama moment and is rethinking his silly statement. I expect Romney will now promise to free Charlie Manson for humanitarian reasons. Poor old Chuck!
The "Arab Spring" was more like an "Islamist Spring" and Morsi will bring sharia law to Egypt, enjoy your democracy Egypt but don't expect the tourists to show up anymore. if we release Sheik Claus it will be a mistake, remember the reception that Libyan terrorist got when he was released?
Go live somewhere else, gogobill. You whiners don't do anything but bellyache. Bellyache and block every attempt to help your helpless arse get back to work.
Quit sniveling.
You should join him!
Well we know how well that humanitarian gesture worked with the Lockerbie Bomber.
I've got their humanitarian gesture right here. They should have just taken him out back and shot him. Our tax dollars are paying to feed and house him. That is an insult to all of us. If they want him released, release him to the American public. We'll take good care of him.
We can all expect the worse from Egypt. Radicals have taken over and of course obummer will be sending his buddies hundreds of millions so they can build and even better way to hate us.
If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck in Obummers world it must be a horse.
It is what it is.
Never mind the fact that we have been sending them money since the 70's. Hardly something new. Not to mention, Congress decides who gets what, not the President.
In a couple of years Egypt will be another Iran. Just shelve it along with the other hum-dingers like Iraq, and Afghanistan, and Viet Nam, and Somalia, and Lybia....and Korea.............
Wow. We're batting a thousand in our quest to "spread freedom and democracy across the globe," eh folks?
/Sarcasm off.
The big issue many countries will be concerned about is the Suez Canal. There could be war if they block this off, although it would be to their detriment as well. This country could devolve into civil war. I am glad the military are strong and independent of the Muslim Brotherhood. The. Egyptian public may have felt that replacing Mubarak was good, but I see it as turning into hell for them in the end.
@redrocket, You need to talk to your senator about that issue to stop it. I guess you had your head up Bush's butt so far that you didn't hear how many years he would give it to them. Now that you can hear clearly your saying WHAT?
Is anyone surprised by those comments? We should have executed the blind SOB! Arab Spring my a$$.
Chuck will do anything to get on TV. I'll never vote for him again because he signed away our constitutional rights when he voted 'YES' on NDAA. I am ashamed that he is one of the 2 NY senators (Gillabrand being the other) who sold us out.
Sounds like somebody finally woke up.
That picture makes him look like a disgruntled mall Santa.
Ho Ho Ho. Sheik Claus is bringing bombs to all the good Muslim boys and girls.
Although wrong on so many levels, I laughed pretty hard Shawn.
The sob should be executed for humanitarian reasons, so we don't have to suffer hearing such crap from Egypt or anyone else.
and we know which end of the horse you are droket-hint, and its not the head
You guys do know that as of right now the Egyptian president does not have much power. Much of the power in Egypt still remains in the military council. The President there is just a figure head.
Domestic consumption....so, if that is how many Egyptians feel...then your AGAINST US. Amazingly inept. We are the new Roman Empire. Upset or transgress our Pax Americana and you will be crushed. Just ask Serbia, Iraq, Libya and Afganistan. Egypt, you can easily become next on our hit list. Behave or face fire and brimstone that our legions will unleash upon barbarians.
You and like-minded thinkers need to go away, you pathetic excuse for a human!!!
The Romans were around for how long? In the end they stretched themselves to thin and were beaten by one of their own weapons of war, the road. It not only made it possible for them to move troops out quickly but made it possible for Hannibal and his Elephants to waltz right up to Rome easily.
@6dogs,
Were you asleep during history class?
1) The Roman Empire did not end until the 1400s and the fall of Constantinople. The Romans knew they were stretch too thin and to ameliorate the situation they divided the Empire into an Eastern Empire and a Western Empire. Both were autonomous. The Eastern Empire (Latin-speaking and Roman to the core) only fell in the 1400's.
2) The roads did not defeat Rome. The "all roads lead to Rome" saw is a very insightful into how roads were used to protect Rome and other citadel cities. If you look closely at a map, you will see that all the citidel cities, and especially Rome, were at the center of "wheels" of roads. But there are very few roads that connect destinations without going through the "hub" city. This enabled Rome to speed its legions to any place but kept enemies of Rome from being able to collude without great difficulty. It is why Hannibal was forced to try to invade over the Alps and why he used a "terror weapon" --- elephants.
3) The basic reason that the Western Empire fell (and why the Eastern Empire survived for more than 1000 additional years) was that the defense of the Western was "outsourced" to non-Latin-speaking people who had absolutely no stake in Rome's survival. Once Romans had no "skin in the game" they also styarted cutting things like infrastructure spending and there was a cascade of events that brought them down.
It isn't too late to shiv blind sheik. And when it comes to more money to Egypt, why throw good after bad. When the Egyptians attack Israel in retaliation, say goodbye Aswan Dam.
I think they should free all these terrorists and send them home on an exploding drone.
What, did someone expect something different? Hey, it's the Muslim Brotherhood. How hard is that to understand? "Arab Spring" was never anything other than contrived media hype. There is no democracy in Islam. I didn't say it. Muslims say it. There is no change, no awakening, no enlightenment in Islam. Islam is a dead end alley in Hell. It offers nothing but death, destruction and rot. How silly and self-deluded can people be? Seriously?
It is time for us to start to take a long and hard look at recalling our Diplomats from Egypt. These people are UN-predictable> Suicidal with a capital S> Godless.......I'm lost for words.
Are you kidding me?? This is what Morsi is focusing on right now? So much help is needed to pull them out of the dire situation of the past year. Not to mention the 30 years of neglect under Mubarak. This truly will be the blind leading the blind.
Some of you posters are pathetic. We don't rule the world. They voted this man into office and they will reap what they sow in this decision. Blaming Obama shows your ignorance. Democracy is ok until we don't like the result? Their decision may have cost them aid that comes from us. We should be strong on any standing treaties and make them well aware that we will not stand for any deviation from them and this criminal in our prison will serve his term.
Right behind bars where he is gonna stay for the rest of his miserable life. But if they really want him back then we could apply sharia law and send him back with his head seperate from his body.
Hey the sheik's image sure makes him look like a Santa to me???? I assume 'ole Anderson Cooper & Hillary are proud of walking around Tahar Square & cheering them all on...way to go!!!! LAND for PEACE, so if the Peace dividend is not 'paid' then, then I guess, the SINAI is returned to Israel???
I thought obozo already did that??
Immature name-calling? How old are you?
Ahhhhhhhh! Last year Obama and Hillary were both supporting the Egyptian Spring. They are still supporting it. I don't hear either of them condeming it. Ahhhhhh! Great Leadership! Ahhhhhhh!
