Parent: Students watched porn in classroom

SAN DIEGO -- The parent of a middle school child is calling for action in the wake of an alleged incident that happened in a seventh-grade classroom.

The San Diego Unified District confirms nine male students from Bell Middle School were suspended in May, but legally could not say why the students were suspended.

Now, a parent is telling NBC 7 San Diego the students were allegedly watching pornography on their cell phones during English class and masturbating.

See the original report at NBCSanDiego.com

The teacher in the classroom at the time, Ed Johnson, allegedly did nothing to stop the incident, only saying he would give students referrals if he caught them. Sources said Johnson then continued reading to students while at his desk.

The parent, Edith Duran, said she had a meeting with the vice principal who told her about the sexual activity.

Duran says her son was not involved in the incident, but was in the classroom at the time, afraid to speak up for fear of being bullied.

“When I send my child to school I want to feel he's safe. I don't send him to sit in a classroom next to boys watching porn, explicit porn which [the] vice principal did tell me [was] very explicit,” she said.

“I asked the vice principal how is it this was going on under his nose, a group of boys huddling around a cell phone watching porn; how is it this was going on and he had no idea?”
According to Duran, the vice principal had no answer for that question, but said this about the teacher's reaction.

“She said he is in shock. Mr. Johnson is in shock, he can't believe this happened. That's what she said,” said Duran. “Let this be a reality check that he needs to do a better job as far as teaching our children and not just sitting back reading and letting them do whatever it is they want to do.”

In the end, Duran believes her son and other students in that class are victims.

“I do expect a phone call. I want therapy, I want some kind of counseling, not just for my son, but for other children victimized in this situation,” Duran told NBC 7 San Diego.

Duran said the school did initially promise therapy and counseling for the students in the classroom, but she has heard nothing from the administration, despite her attempts to follow-up.

She wants more Bell Middle School parents to reach out to her and join her in demanding something be done for the students in the class who she said were victimized by this inappropriate behavior.

The school district would not comment on whether that teacher is currently under investigation, but sources told NBC 7 San Diego a substitute teacher was placed in the classroom with the teacher following the incident until the end of the school year.

NBC 7 has been unable to reach the teacher for comment.

I am pretty sure he was just teaching new math:

If Jenna Jameson has sex at the same time with 17 men, and 13 women, answer these questions:

  1. What is the percentage of men? (56.67%)
  2. How big a whore is Jenna? (100%)

Ah, yes. And this ironic finger-pointing-lesson-in-adult-responsibility-and-blame-assignment is brought to you by ... an adult who goes on a public Internet forum and calls himself "Wet Willy."

Notice I wrote "adult", rather than "grownup." =)

PS. As for assigning responsibility and blame, I would assert that the boys had a hand in this (pun intended)

Echo that Juliet: WHY should the teachers be responsible for raising their kids?

Apparently the instructor went to the administration about what was going on in his class AND who it involved or no one would have been suspended in the FIRST place. Parents need to GROW UP: just because it is YOUR little angel that was involved doesn't make him a victim. Didn't YOUR little angel come home and COMPLAIN about the porn that the other kids 'made him watch'? NO? WHY NOT? Instead he doesn't say anything, even though he probably KNEW he was going to be suspended - probably after already having confessed in the princable's office. There is a hell of a lot that went on between her kid and the school administration BEFORE his mother even knew about it and THAT isn't covered in this article, either. Normally, there aren't many "accidental suspensions": all of the ones I recall that happened were because my class mates DESERVED IT.

Teachers are - and should be - responsible for what happens in their classroom. If boys are huddled together watching ANYTHING on a cell phone during the class lesson I would expect the teacher to briefly pause the lesson in order to escort the misbehaving children out of the classroom. PERIOD.

That's if they were watching anything on their cellphones rather than pay attention to the teacher.

now a days, that's likely to iether get you shot by disgruntled student, have false accusations brought before you of inapropriate physical contact, or even bullied to a point of making you no longer wanting to come to school to teach...teachers no longer have the authority that was once accepted and afforded to them as before; should phones be allowed in class or at school? well, gum is still banned from school consumption for a reason, most students will abuse the right to chew gum on the premises! having cell phones in class/at school should be a REWARD, NOT a given right of students! if it's abused, even if only by a few, then it's should be removed, suspended, or taken away permanately! students are suppose to be at school to LEARN! that's no longer the case, now it's used primarily as a babysitting service and social club!

michael - you think its acceptable for students to watch porn videos in class, in middle school, while class is in session and the teacher is reading an assignment to the class?

Porn, videos, whatever........how could any of that be acceptable behavior during a child's classroom environment?

If it's anyone's responsibility, it's the parents who gave a 7th grader a smartphone and didn't put any kind of parental control software on there.

If you give 12-13 year old boys un-restricted internet access, what do you think they are going to do?

alex the blade- when a parent drops a child off at school for 7 hours, it is the resposibility of the school to keep the child safe! nobody said the teacher is raising those kids but its very obvious the children are not a priority to that teacher, so for those children that may not be your precious angels are angels to their parents! that woman has every right to come out and speak out on behalf of the rest of the parents who's childrens were victimized and yes i said vicitmized! when a fellow student dies or passes away the school is quick to have counselors and therapists ready to speak to the children that were affected by the death so is wrong if a mother wants therapy for the children that have lost their innocence to watching those disturbed children masturbating to porn and doing it in front of innocent children and now will have to carry this memory with them for the rest of their lives! it is the death of their innocence gone! you may not care about preserving the innocence in children but there are alot of parents out there that do! so i praise that mother for speaking out and fighting for her child! point said!!!!!

These are 7th grade middle schoolers. This is nothing new. I can remember 30 years ago the boys hiding playboy and hustler in their text books. I am sure they were doing something in study hall that wasnt' studying. These are boys being boys, which at this age means being stupid. Don't blame the parents, they are going to get ahold of it one way or another if they want it that badly.

Should the teacher have stopped it, heck yes, and then the parents should have ben notified.

While the mother is very right that this is wrong (assuming her side of the story is correct), she's overreacting. Therapy and counselling? Really? How 'bout no. He's gonna be wanking in a few years anyway. Will she try to get him therapy when that happens too, which is completely natural with teenagers? If she does that she'll just end up damaging her son. I speak from personal experience.

It's her fault for allowing internet usage on the phone. Parents need a little common sense about their children and their cell phones. Instead of blaming the school for her bad parenting, she should take away those privileges and ground him for the entirety of his summer vacation and making him volunteer, instead of having fun.

That's what's wrong with the schools these days. As a substitute teacher and seeing first hand the lengths these teachers go through to keep order, I hate reading that these parents blame the teachers. If a teacher spent time stopping each and every kid from "letting them do whatever it is they want to do," they would spend the entire day with no learning going on. It's time parents start stepping up and supporting the teachers and start raising your kids to speak up when they see something and then support their child to make sure they aren't bullied for what they tell.

It is not the video that's so bad it is the circle jerk that the teacher probably liked watching. Seven guys in a cluster in a classroom with a teacher present playing spank the monkey and MR TEACHER saw nothing. That is impossible.

If the parents are so upset about this, how about their parents stop buying them smart phones (I'm assuming that if they're able to watch porn on the phone, it's a smart phone). How about giving them a very basic phone with which all they can do is make a call! You give them phones, tablets, notebooks, PCs with 24/7 Internet access and then don't think that a teenage boy is looking at porn at some point? Get a clue!!!

Amen, John B! Eliminating smart phones from schools will dramatically cut down on so much of the melodrama, misery and even tragedy that permeates middle and high school these days. Activity like this and cyber bullying would all but disappear if kids under 18 didn't have unlimited access to unsupervised Internet use 24/7.

I don't have a problem with kids owning smart phones but it's ludicrous that they're allowed to bring them into class. Our kindergartner lost two toy cars and a bouncy ball because the teacher caught him playing with them in class. He knew it was against the rules and he learned the hard way that breaking rules have consequences. Maybe if kids lost their phones for this kind of behavior they'd behave more appropriately. And maybe if mom and dad had to eat the cost of a $400 toy THEY would parent more responsibly.

What are the state laws here regarding sex offender classification? In my state if someone had exposed themselves publicly (i.e. classroom) and/or masturbated in public they would face criminal prosecution. Being in a classroom of minors the charges would probably be related to contributing to the delinquency of minors or reckless endangerment of minors. If convicted they would have to register as "sex offenders". 7th graders are certainly old enough to know not to engage in such crass and vulgar behavior in school. I can't imagine a middle school environment that would lead the kids to think they would - or should - get away with doing this in front of others in the classroom. Its sick, and I do feel for the other students in the class (if what was reported actually happened) who were witness to it and who had to sit through this uncomfortable behavior in class.

Whatever opinions are on porn or masturbating or teenage boys..........no person of any age, let alone a middle school age student - should be forced to sit through public group displays of porn or masturbation. That's just horrifically crazy for a classroom! I don't think the mother was over-reacting, but I think her choice of words will cause more humiliation for her child and subject him to more teasing, which is wrong. She could've focused her wording on the crassness of group masturbation in a classroom and demand the school ensure that all students are free from uncomfortable sexual situations in the classroom.

I agree, remy. If my girls were sitting in that room and we exposed...literally...to something like that I would be livid. No, I won't allow my kids to have smart phones in grade or high school, no, they will only have text/call capabilities to the family, and yes, we take our responsibilities seriously as parents. That is disgusting in a classroom...well, really anywhere...and my girls would be really traumatized to see that kind of thing. I would be and I am an adult. Ick. I am no prude, but there is no public situation where boys watching porn and masturbating is anywhere near okay. Those of you who laugh this off just don't see the whole picture. And the fact that the other boy was afraid to speak up for fear of being bullied tells you something about the situation, too. That is nasty.

If I ever have children, they would not have a phone until at last junior year in high school when maturity starts to set in. I think it is a shame that some parents let their kids - or worse yet - insist that their kids have a cell phone at young ages. They have no idea what their kids are doing and they ignorantly think their kids are doing nothing wrong. The worst part is that these kids are going to grow up with no sense of propriety.

A child under the age of 16 should never have a phone that has internet access, its ok to have a phone for emergency situations, so on that point it is the parents of the child who was using the phone to view porn who is at fault. As for the teacher I am going out on a limb and say that I assume the school has a policy against cell phone use while on school property and if they do not they should. The teacher who claims not to have known what was going on is a liar and should be fired and if he is not the parents should file a lawsuit against the school for not protecting their children. The children who participated in this should be expelled for the remainder of the school year. If the children's parents really give a crap about their education they will home school them so they will pass their test's and advance to the next grade level. There is a lot of blame in this story to go around. In my opion when you reach 16 you should be treated as an adult and pay the consequenses of your actions.

So....16-year-olds are allowed to jack off in the classroom? O.o

I mean, not to say that they can't be punished just like those 7th graders. Just that they should be allowed to do it to face their own consequences. Right?

                          Mayhaps ban cell-phones altogether?

"The children who participated in this should be expelled for the remainder of the school year."

Oh Heaven's graciously golly good Lollipops for sucking.

First, we should protect those 7th-graders. Next, we should punish them for posing a threat to 7th graders....*head spins in an exorcist fashion*

Are people in society really investing their energy into creating a safe environment for the young ones? Or are they simply bored and need to somehow make a petty name for themselves?

The parents are at fault not the teacher; who is restricted on what they can do. I say raise your kids better and be involved with them and take their phones away. I also think we would be a better society if the schools had corporal punishment. within limits. As long a the kids know the teacher can't touch them they will disrespect them.

Are parents really so stupid to not know that if you give a child internet access without supervision they will find pornogrophy if available and are they to stupid know that it is. If they are then they have no business with children. This is one screwed up country, parents are not raising their children, the children are raising themselves. America started a downward decline during the sixties when they said it was ok to murder unborn babies and taking prayer and pride for this country from the class room. Now they are oking the devient homosexual lifestyle as normal when is a crime against nature and against God. America is doomed, the military will go completely electronic and computerized because of the immorality that is being allowed and the taking away the soldiers religious beliefs.

Oh seriously. This isn't related to the things you want to preach about and your post is silly. Grow up. The only part that makes sense is not giving kids unrestricted internet access, but otherwise you are just trying to get all your talking points in.

Sadly for you, Jerry, parents would always be "stupid", according to everything you just posted. Since, as far back as history's timeline goes, kids would likely know the next generation of technology better than their parents, so they would always have access to the forbidden; and to break the parents' "rules". The threatening "computers" of tomorrow will always be a threat to the parents as long as they are the parents.

Then again, the pertinent question remains as to why these kids use such "future computers" in the first place. Mayhaps it's because kids are rebellious by nature? Mayhaps they feel that the blessings of their generation would bring them better things than what their parents' blessings have brought them during their younger years? And, perhaps the parents simply don't see the same blessings in those future comps as they do? Regardless, if it's something that's occurred forever in history, who's to say that what they're doing is so punishable? (Obviously, these parents have, at one point, been punished too for the same, right?)

An alternative is to simply accept human nature as it is, no matter how much it breaks the morality in society. That's just my .02, which you can totally take or leave.

Let this be a lesson to the teachers?? How about let this be a lesson to the parents. Their kids don't NEED phones that they can watch movies from, and they certainly shouldn't be having them in class. I remember once a school was trying to ban cell phones in class, the kids could keep them in their lockers but not take them to class, and parents raised all sorts of hell on it saying that their 'precious special ones' should have access to their phones at any time. If the teacher truly knew what these kids where doing then shame on him for not taking them out of class and punishing them for it, but I would wager if he knew they where on the cells he didn't know they where watching porn. Come on parents, step up and parent. Your kid doesn't need the latest and greatest gizmo in school, they are there to learn and that is partially your responsibility as well.

right you are lyrica this is just another example of the public school cesspool where the precious little one are always right and the teachers are expected to be babysitters......what a mess......this is why home schooling is becoming more and more prevalent. but what do you expect from today's privileged society that thinks they are owed and don't need to ever repay. if a teacher disciplines then the parents are up in arms about that and are calling for the teachers head if they do nothing the parents want their heads.....what right thinking person would ever want the job of teacher........teacher job ad; wanted person who thinks they can change the world and wont get upset when they cant. must work ridiculous hours put up with spoiled brats.....and their kids who do no wrong. must have no problem with being questioned by superiors who are afraid of being sued and will throw you under the bus to save their own asses. all this and more for ridiculously low pay. apply in person at the insane asylum.

Yes the teacher was an idiot and should be disciplined, as far as the mother going overboard on this, saying kids need counseling, come on what junior high kid doesn't want to look at porn (curiosity factor) and there isn't a junior high kid in the universe that hasn't masturbated. The only things these kids are guilty of is not being smart enough to do this kind of stuff in private.

Oh sure...but very rarely do they do it in public and that ISN'T okay and shouldn't be dismissed. Yes, seeing a bunch of boys doing that in your class can be traumatizing...gives me the creeps thinking about. If your parents give you web access and aren't bright enough to stop that stuff at least go do it in private. The fact that they did it in front of other kids in class is nasty, seriously over a line of how you treat other people, and does need to be addressed as a serious issue.
