Florida teen dies in game of Russian Roulette

A Florida teenager who was shot in the head during a game of Russian Roulette has died.

Thorin R. Montgomery, 17, was pronounced deceased early Sunday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to detectives, Montgomery and three of his friends were involved in an apparent game of Russian Roulette at Montgomery’s home on Friday night. Montgomery was the first to have a turn at the game when the .38-caliber revolver discharged and a bullet struck him in the head, the sheriff’s office said.

Montgomery was transported by air to Bayfront Medical Center in critical condition.

An autopsy is pending.

@justme:

No, this kid who knowingly played Russian Roulette is stupid!! You reap what you sow, if you are going to act stupid, then you deserve the outcome of that stupidity!

So, exactly who or what would you blame on this act? Society? Mental problems? Because no ordinary non-stupid sane person would do this.

They need to do the autopsy to see if there were any substances in his system (other than the bullet) at the time that it happened.

Kinda makes no sense spending tax dollars on an autopsy. Cause of death is clear and simple in this case. Lead poisoning of the brain!

Spider they only give Darwin awards for death doing something stupid or making yourself infertile by doing something stupid. Most win by dying. Unfortunately though, since those books came out you see "Darwin Award" posted several times on articles like this, most slack-jawed yokels believe they're being clever. Gain some originality.

ERIC: agreed!

When you play Russian R, you need to remove the bullets from ALL of the chambers, save one; you don't start the game with a full cylinder or its game over, obviously. Doesn't say if they set it up correctly or not... if they did, then Lady Luck must be having a good laugh with the Grim Reaper.

And to think that my dad used to complain about my playing video games with my mates: if he knew what we did when we were pissed he'd have had a heart attack!

I really have to wonder why this is being covered in a national news venue. Seriously, a 17 year old dies participating in one of the most absolutely stupid activities in the history of humankind. I could see this being covered by the local news in the area that it happened in, but I can think of no reason this story is of any importance on a national scale. Asinine coverage of non-stories is one the most annoying aspects of modern news media.

Actually you don't have to die to be the recipient of a Darwin Award, but you do have to have somehow made yourself permanently unable to reproduce while doing something especially stupid and kind of unique.

This is a sad case, really, but if the kid was determined to play Russian roulette sometimes there are worse things than dying. Not long ago a kid in Kansas City did exactly the same thing only he lingered on, in a coma for months. The kid in KC was gooned on cocaine when he shot himself in the side of the head.No idea what posessed the kid in Florida to do what he did.

I hope they tested the other participants' hands for powder residue. I'm immediately suspicious when someone dies from playing Russian Roulette. Not saying it's impossible, but very suspicious.

Secondly, you can simply look at the revolver to see if you're going to shoot yourself.

Thirdly, even if they only went one round, there was a 52% chance of someone getting killed. Don't they teach math in high school anymore? 1-(5/6)^4

Indy Patriot:: I disagree with your statement that all teenagers do stupid things. I am way past my teenage years and I'm still getting around on my own two feet-- slower than I did even five years ago, but I'm still getting around.

When I was a teenager, we lived on a ranch. My dad had a rifle. I was NOT interested in even target shooting. In fact, he wanted to make a rabbit hunter out of me-- that was nothing that I cared to do. I remember baby rabbits and their pretty brown eyes.

One of these days I will have to give up my job-- but it will probably be because I won't be able to drive to work. I'm nearly 80 years old and I am a volunteer-- a job I don't get paid cash for. But the satisfaction is much more important.

But teenagers do stupid things? Maybe these days-- and maybe you do. But not all teenagers do.

Were they playing it with a semi auto and not a revolver? First shot? Did the other friend then unload the rest of the rounds? lol. If you want to kill somone just shoot them in the head and claim playing a "game". Is this game against the law? Anybody being brought up on charges that were also playing this game with this obvious mentally deficient 17 year old? Is the gun owner being brought up on charges for an underage teen having access to it resulting in suicide? Maybe if people were taught gun safety by the hollywood idiots instead of them glorifying gun violence constantly this type of stuff would not happen. It is an agenda by the left same as major news organizations like MSNBC only reporting on the daily gun violence and 1/100000000000 the time when they are used to defend a family from a murderer. Mr. Rogers was right when he testified to congress, "I saw it on TV".

@Susie I don't think Indy meant that the "stupid things" that kids do are all on the equivalent of shooting yourself doing a game of Russian Roulette. I think what Indy Patriot meant was that kids do things without thinking of the unintended consequences; which is true beyond a shadow of a doubt. 1) their brains are not fully developed at that age and won't be until around age 25 (scientific fact) and 2) they don't have the benefit of hindsight/experience that we as adults do.

I've read more than a couple stories lately where kids have been killed drag racing. That's nothing new. It's been happening for decades. I've also read stories where kids went out late at night climbed into/atop old abandoned buildings and fell through a rotted floor to their death. Again, nothing new. It happened when I was a kid and I've heard stories of how it happened when my grandparents were teens. Kids live for the moment with no thoughts about the "what ifs" and hence they do "stupid things" that sometimes have fatal consequences.

Guns are dangerous. That doesn't make them inherently bad, but to claim that guns aren't dangerous is ludicrous. While common sense should say that pointing a potentially loaded gun at your head is something you shouldn't do, that doesn't mean that gun safety had nothing to do with this. Proper gun safety teaches that you never point a gun, even one that you are sure isn't loaded, at anyone (who you don't want to shoot), including yourself. While it may not prevent the biggest idiots, proper gun safety is something this young man should have definitely had more of, as should his three idiot friends. In fact, if proper gun safety had been practiced, this revolver would have been locked away where a minor could not get his hands on it, as required by most state laws and virtually all gun safety practices.

Hey Do - you can't tell a gun nut anything. They are the types that piss on electrified fences and are surprised at the results. Guns don't kill, bullets that are put in them do the killing. And morons that support the drug dealers that buy most of the guns are the ones who deserve to be punished. If you ban guns, only morons will own guns (this is true even without banning guns).

Kids do DUMB things! Often it's for reasons that only make sense to them and they almost never think ahead to the consequences. Have you ever seen a teenage kid that didn't think he(or she) was immortal and could leap tall buildings in a single bound? Peer pressure is incredible at that age and they don't dare cave in and look like they're "chicken". When these kids are with their "buds", the last thing on their mind is anything Mom or Dad might have told them. Unfortunately, in this case there is no "do-over" and the rest of the kids who were involved are going to be royally screwed up for the rest of their lives. Just another short term action with a long term consequence. Are there any classes or any kind of education on how to play russian roulette? Has anybody seen Russian Roulette 101 offered as a class? With no formal training in the matter, it's very possible they did it wrong as in with an automatic or with all chambers in the cylinder loaded. After all, they're just "dumb kids" doing dumb things and no matter how it played out, it was a WRONG choice! And, kids make wrong choices all the time. It's what kids do! Unfortunately, most of the time that's how they learn. Parents, are you paying attention?

I feel bad for the family and friends who have lost a loved one, I'm sure there is guilt all around. I think a lot of the posters are missing the point about teaching gun safety: these kids probably knew all about it. What they probably didn't know is how to deal with boredom, a lack of self esteem, and a lack of belief that life is worth living. True, kids do dumb stuff; things like this accident happen all the time. But there is typically an underlying theme: these are all kids who are not afraid of death, some of them even seek it. They think life sucks and always will, they have no hope for the future. They don't care if they risk everything, because in their mind "everything" is not worth worrying about or preserving. It starts with the parents, but teens are influenced by extended family and especially peers. I made sure I talked with my kids all the time about how wonderful life is, how many options are available. And when we have tough times I talk to them about keeping their heads up, looking to the future and getting through the rough patches. And, I make sure they don't have dickheads for friends.

An automobile doesn't kill a man at a distance at the simple flick of a trigger. You can hear and see an automobile going at you. You can't kill multiple people with an automobile, unless they are standing together on a road.

A gun is a perfect killing machine. And it's perfected for this purpose.

              #3.13 - Mon Jul 2, 2012 11:30 AM EDT

If you have to teach a 17 year old kid not to point a loaded weapon at his head, yes, you should have never had children. Guns are no more dangerous than other aspects of our lives---like an automobile or even electricity---I've seen a lot of electrocutions in the last few weeks where kids went swimming or reached into the water to grab a golf ball..

And AlexG...you can take out an entire van or bus load of people with irrational choices behind the wheel. If your premise of saying that was to say that cars and guns are not comparable...that is rather interesting. When used properly, neither is dangerous. When not used properly, both are killing machines. Whether perfected for that purpose or not, each is equally capable in the wrong hands. I would say cars more so, unless you live in the projects where guns are often greater in number.

You do realize that autopsies aren't solely to determine the physical cause of death, right? They also seek to determine if the young man was drunk, or on drugs, or having some other condition that was affecting his judgement at the time of death. Also, despite the obvious gunshot wound, an autopsy makes sure that what the witnesses are reporting is what really happened. If, for instance, the autopsy shows that his time of death was different than the friends reported, or that he was unconscious at the time of death, then his death could be something other than the self inflicted accident that is reported by the friends. There's also the occasional case where the apparent cause of death is not the actual cause of death. People can be shot after death to cover up another cause of death. Yes, this death is most likely exactly as reported, in which case the autopsy will provide a few more details and confirmation of that story. If the family has no objection to an autopsy, what is the harm? Worst case scenario you learn a few more details and confirm that everything reported is correct, and it makes sure the perceived incident is correct.

They're just trying to find an excuse other than total stupidity. if they're lucky this kid smoked weed or had some "bath salts" at this get together or sometime in the three weeks prior and they can let everyone know it COULD have been a contributing factor. Just like the face eater. No one is actually responsible for their own actions anymore.

Maybe they're trying to determine if he drowned in the pool first?

The Brady Bill was written by a Republican. "The most restrictive gun control bill written and passed." President Reagan opined that the Brady Act would provide a crucial "enforcement mechanism" to end the "honor system" of the 1968 Gun Control Act (a result of the JFK assassination) and "can't help but stop thousands of illegal handgun purchases......Brain washed Conservatives need to look up the facts and stop trying to blame it on the wrong people.

I am sure the larger masses are convinced the kid won the game.

After all, if a 6 shot revolver, he only had a 16.666666666666~ chance of winning the lead round. Odds were against him being successfully and terminally idiotic on the first try.

                    No doubt, Darwin Award!

@ Hatchet..So I deserve a Darwin Award too? I'll have you know that I served over 20+ years in the military and have a 20 year old son in the military and having grown up with guns all my life, I learned that in the wrong hands, guns, or any other weapon if used inappropriately, are dangerous.

So, who taught you how to tie your shoes or ride a bike? Darwin? No, probably your parents. So, when it comes to rearing a child and teaching said child right from wrong, the responsibility lies with the parents...At least until the child turns 18 and only then are the parents no longer responsible.. Studies have shown that by the time children are around 3 years old, they already have the traits that will stay with them the rest of their lives.

And you had to politicize even this tragedy? Not funny, not cool.

What's wrong with a little truth. Besides, it's not a tragedy when you pick up the gun, load it, place it to your head and pull the trigger. It's a tragedy when someone does this and wants to end there life not when it's for fun!!! It's good he took himself out before he took out someone else with him.

The research on this shows that when groups of teens are together they will often make higher risk choices regardless of the activity. This especially applies behind the wheel.

They had to spend money to research that?

A 6 shot revolver with 1 round chambered would yield an 83.3333333 % chance of surviving each round if the cylinder was indeed spun after each attempt! Where did the 16% figure come from????

                        @ Wa 2

It's called mathematics, and the laws of probabilty.

now add 16.6666666~ to 83.3333333~ and see what you arrive at.

You calculated his chance of survival, I calculated his chance of accute lead poisoning.

                        @Hatchet-101:

Funny how people can take one thing and use only what they want and not look at the same thing the other way around.

If it was a 2 inch .38 chances are it held 5 rounds, unless it was a Colt.

Then you are down to a 20% to 80% chance.

The 16% is that chance of the bullet coming out at the first pull of the trigger...one bullet loaded divided by 6 total chambers equals a 16.666666667% chance of the bullet coming out on the first pull. Hell you did the math against the first pull, I would have figured you would've done the math the other way 'round.

Under Florida Law, he would have been 18 by election day, so his absentee vote will automatically go to Romney.

There are always mitigating factors, mis-fire, jam, etc.. but it really does not matter what side of the glass you are looking from, as long as you see the glass.
