Tacoma, Wash. middle school teacher accused of having sex with student

A Tacoma, Wash., teacher has been placed on paid leave amid accusations that she had sex with one of her middle school students at least three times, both on school grounds and in the boy's bedroom.

Keshia Shaw, a 32-year-old science and math teacher at Gray Middle School, was charged with five counts of child rape on June 26. She is accused of performing oral sex and having intercourse with the student over a two-year period.

The first time was when he was in her sixth-grade class in 2007; the last was during the fall of his eighth grade year, when they allegedly had sex in Shaw's classroom, according to documents filed in Pierce County Superior Court. After the last classroom incident, the documents allege, Shaw went to a bank and gave the boy $80 and then performed oral sex on him.

The allegations were not reported to Child Protective Services until this year, after the boy, now 17,  heard a sermon on molestation at church. After the service, he told his mother and a family friend he had been abused, court documents say.

Shaw's court date is July 10. She hasn't entered a plea yet, reported Tacoma's The News Tribune. She was placed on paid leave when the school district learned about the accusations on May 7, Tacoma school district spokesman Dan Voelpel told msnbc.com.

"Our teachers work for nine months, but they get paid over 12 months," Voelpel said. "She is currently receiving pay for the time she already worked, and she will continue to get that money."

The school district will re-evaluate whether Shaw should be placed on unpaid leave once her paychecks for time already worked run out, he said.

Shaw was hired by the Tacoma School District in 2002 as a substitute teacher and became full-time in 2005, KING reported.

According to Pierce County prosecuting attorney Heather DeMaine, the sexual abuse began at the end of the boy's sixth grade year. He was re-taking an exam in her classroom when Shaw, who had no underwear on under her dress, caught her student "looking at her and asked if he was turned on," DeMaine's court filing states. She proceeded to force him into sex in a locked room next door, the document says, and told him not to tell anyone.

That July, after driving him home from summer school, Shaw had sex with the boy in his bedroom while his mother was at work, according to DeMaine.

More encounters, including anal intercourse, reportedly occurred in the following years on school grounds when the boy -- who went to a different school starting in seventh grade -- returned to Gray Middle School to visit friends.

The incidents happened when the boy was 12 to 14 years old. Shaw was in her 20s at the time, KING reported.

Voelpel, Tacoma's school district spokesman, told msnbc.com that no accusations have been made by other students.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum told The News Tribune, “We don’t know about other students. Who knows, this may bring other victims forward.”

Shaw filed for divorce in February of this year, court records show. She has two children, ages 6 and 8, according to The News Tribune.

Calls to attorneys in the case and to the Tacoma school district on Tuesday were not immediately returned.

Court filings identify the boy by his initials. NBC News and msnbc.com do not reveal the identity of alleged underage victims of sexual abuse.

Had a hot teacher in 5th grade, but they just got older and uglier the higher the grade. Although, the high school football medical trainer was pretty hot. A lot of us would fake injuries just so she could do some rubbing.

Kid was perfectly fine with it till some stupid sermon. He should be thanking her for life instead of getting her into trouble.

this kid could be lying is an understatement. He was abused because 'he' went to get $80 to have her perform sex? Who on earth accepts $80 for sex?? Clearly this is nothing more than a reverse copycat of a Sandusky witch-hunt. Either way her life is completely destroyed.

However, I would like to see laws changed where alleged victims are charged with a crime equal to the punishment intended as the accused if the period is more than 2 years without reporting. Additionally the law should expose those alleged victims names as well if no charges, dismissal of charges or not guilty verdict is handed down. Its time for the law to balance out.

My first experience was at 15 with a 40 something woman, a neighbor and friend of my mom, whose husband had recently died. She was afraid staying in her house alone, so my mom had me stay with her. It was a great experience, and the affair lasted 3 years, until I graduated high school and went away to the Army. My mom got suspicious, but I protected her, and would have denied it to my death before I would have gotten her into trouble. Boys are different from girls, and even though it is politically correct to deny that, it's true. This boy wasn't a victim, he was lucky.

One more thing, it is especially egregious when a person abuses their position of authority as a teacher in order to to take advantage of people.

How'd this kid keep this kind of stuff a secret for that long? I can't imagine scoring some sweet deal like that in the sixth grade then not telling any of my friends. It would be high-five central everywhere I went in school.

When an adult authority figure forces sex on a 6th grader it is rape, period. I am so sick of the attitude that it's OK to molest and rape boys but not girls! Why the heck do you think so many men never tell, or wait until they're adults to press charges, if they ever do? Sandusky, anyone?? Every one of you with this attitude is part of the problem!

His story is pretty suspect. Sex in the sixth and seventh grade? Paid money? Locked in a room but didn't tell anyone and no one was a witness?

There needs to be more than just "he said, she said". Kids can and do make up stories for a number of reasons. And we are talking about a teacher and mother with no other reported incidents. Maybe it happened and maybe it didn't. We know of one famous teacher that admittedly hooked up with a youngster. But that doesn't make every accusation valid.

While a teen I had a girlfriend's mom make a suspicious offer but turned it down and left. So I know personally things can go on. But still, there needs to be more than an accusation. If this kid is having a 'religious vision' or lying then it could ruin a persons life. It's happened before. Let's hope a professional approach and investigation determines guilt or innocence, not one person's accusations.

How is it any different? Rape is rape. Rape of a child is rape of a child. 6th grade would make the VICTIM under any age of consent. Just because it was a "hot" woman doesn't make it right. She was/is a "sicko" woman raping a little boy, if the allegations are true.

Heterosexual child abuse is a strong indicator that it's the straight people that really need to come out of the closet with their own sexuality. Poor heterosexuals are not allowed to address their own perversions but must concentrate on sexual and gender identity minorities and project all their own 'proclivities' onto them. Nieitiy percent of all child sexual abuse is heterosexual. No wonder gay people make better parents.

@ Tired

Her picture is posted in several places, both from that time and the current. She wasn't half bad looking.

I had a very similar occurrence with a 29 yr old married woman when I was 12. It lasted 1.5 years and I can not say that I blame her one bit. Her husband was abusive, when he actually paid attention to her, and cheated on her constantly.

I was well aware the relationship could have got her into a lot of trouble, though I wanted to do anything and everything I could for her. She avoided the contact with her all in the beginning, but I won her over. I was 110% the aggressor. I would insist on kissing her every chance I got. I went the distance.

We had a very tender, caring, loving relationship that was only bolstered by the intimacy and sex. I was an early starter with an 8 year old girl, when I was the same 8 years of age, and went into the relationship expecting exactly what occurred.

Unlike many who may have experienced similar, or would suggest that the relationship was harmful, I can state most certain that it enriched my life.

I was NEVER sexually abused as a child, and would NEVER consider abusing a child in any way, shape, or form, though I do understand how some may say that this is acceptable behavior, based upon their own experiences.

I do not concur. It was not acceptable for either her, or I, even then. I just happen to deal with it differently IMHO. She was also never sexually abused as a child, for those who wondered, and the facy that she was in a vulnerable state at the time was not a particle to her future happiness.

At the same time, I believe the authorities in this case are TOTALLY LYING, as they always do. I would have to hear it from the horses mouth to believe any of it, and may not even then.

What bothers me most is that this relationship (if true) appears to have been totally about sex, and nothing more, and was likely two people looking to use each other.

@Trust

The prosecution alleges she paid him $80 for sex. I think it likely she gave him the money to help him out after he ran away from home.

First off quickdraw, use spell check! That's the little icon on the top bar with a check and ABC on top of it. Second, your accusations of all heterosexuals and our perversions is baseless to the fact that it is only a small fraction of people that commit a perverted sex crime. In this case a female teacher sexually assaulting a male student. But then again I don't hear you say anything about a male having sex with boys. Huh, sounds like to me that is a perversion in itself, a homosexual child molester say like that assistant coach in Penn State. Now your going to say ah well I! Shut up! You have the Gaul to talk about adult heterosexuals having sex with a child but when it comes to some adult to have sex with a child that's of the same sex, you say nothing, Your a hypocrite.

Shame on you for perpetuating the double standard! It's attitudes like yours that that make it that much harder for male victims of abuse (especially by females) to speak out. That isn't a valid statistic RevSpinnaker. I've seen interviews with molestation victims on tv who said they had claimed women had also molested them because they were embarrassed to be molested by a man. It's not a valid statistic at all. No women in my family ever molested me and it would never occur to me to molest any child ever, related or not.

Rather defensive there aren't we? I am reading into your comment that because you, presumably as a woman, would never molest a child that women would never molest a child... and yet we have multiple incidents in Washington state in this thread that show women teachers are doing just that. Where I live there are at least six female teachers somewhere in the legal process for having sex with one or more students. One is simply awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty. Another the debate is over the exact charge as the student just turned 18 so it is a question of child abuse or simply person of authority.

Why? I was raped several times a week for over three years when I was a kid. I don't have anything to back that up, but it happened. That's the secret to sexual abuse.....the monsters know that the child usually can't prove anything and they scare the hell out of them so that they don't say anything. It's not unbelievable at all. I don't know if it happened or not, but it is extremely difficult for male victims to speak out because of the shame they experience, not to mention that they are often not believed.

Exactly how does a woman "rape" a child by, at least in one case, "having anal intercourse." Unless she's a tranny, and I'll just assume she's not, and that the anal recipient was, in fact, her, that's going to be a really difficult act of forceful rape. Yes, I realize the other claims are totally in-line with rape, but I found this one a bit odd.

Something definitely smells fishy here, so let's hope justice is served, but served correctly.

            #4.2 - Wed Jul 4, 2012 12:46 AM EDT

Jon- you don't have to be penetrated to be considered raped. She forced this young man to have sex with her. He was raped. She was in a position of trust. She raped his trust too. Only sick people think it's 'Cool' that a young man is molested &/or forced into sex with an older woman. She pretty much destroyed his youth & gave him a confusing aspect on sex & love. She should NOT get pay & be put UNDER the jail with any other pedophile.

Perhaps you should look up the legal definition of rape in your state. Rape is sex, of any nature, with another person without their consent. Minors, by definition, cannot give consent. Not so long ago on this site was a story of how a 13 y/o boy "raped" a 5 y/o girl. The "rape" was by digital penetration, including making her feel him up. Ohio law states that ANY sexual assault on someone under the age of 12 is rape. The federal law/courts are finally catching up with the times. They now recognize that a man can be raped... that would be by either sex. Until that happened the worst a non consenting sex act on a man could be was sexual battery.

Years back they used the term 'carnal knowledge' to describe these acts. The male anatomy requires "the thing to get up" before any action was gotten. In high school, there was a 13 yr old girl who used to have sex with a male teacher in his late twenties. Quite a few of us in our circle of friends knew about it. She was actually proud of herself, for both she and her single mom were what we wrote off as 'sluts'.

It was until recently the Nancy Grace Sex Police Patrol Movement decided to drop the term carnal knowledge and describe all acts with an underage as rape.

For all practical purposes, a 17 yr old male having sex with an attractive 22 yr old, even a teacher, is a GLORY for him. Yet by using todays standard of rape can lend the poor woman to jail. Even at twelve I still consider him a lucky chap.

As a boy I would have wanted to avoid hurting her. I don't understand this kid. I suppose he could be going through some kind of religion induced, attention whore phase, and decided to sacrifice his benefactor.

He was an 11 year old boy who was forced into sex by an adult who should have been caring for and protecting him. Eleven year old children do not have the mental nor emotional maturity to process such encounters. The commentors above apparently have not reached a mental nor emotional maturity either or they would understand this already and wouldn't be making such crude, ignorant comments. If the teacher had been male, what would you be posting?

you do realize that men and women are different in almost every way, right? I surely can't be the first one to inform you that men and women engage in sex (and the full spectrum of the perversion that can be found in sex) for completely different reasons.

She deserves to rot in jail she is a molester.

I am the mother of an 8th grade boy. I know his hormones are raging I fully expect him to experiment with little girls or WANT to get with WOMEN. The flaw is WOMEN should not want to be with little boys. This woman is disturbed!

@ John 2412130 - She will get a few years probation, if that. If the teacher had been a man, he'd be in prison for at least the next 10-15 yrs. Before any of you start flippin ur lip, look under archives. MSN did an article about the double standards in the court systems when dealing with sexual preditors and children. Women get probation, community service and go home. Men go to prison. And ask me where are the equal rights activist on this matter. Silent and not being rude. They know they can't talk while having their cake and eating it too.

Sorry Rev, I had massive crushes on half a dozen of my lady teachers. If any of them had used me in this manner, I'd have been absolutely ecstatic. I was thrilled by any sort of personal attention they gave me. On the other hand, I got offered a bj from a guy that had picked me up hitch hiking, and I jumped out of a moving car. Not really a valid comparison between the two. Apples and Orangutans.

How is it not a valid compare? The question is would you find it offensive for a male teacher to pay a student for a bj? (note student is either sex and and the answer is 100% yes or no)

He was at a sermon in church when he decided that he should say something. Maybe he noted a pastor sounding a little too much like he was GROOMING.

I think the kid found a soft heart in her, and pegged her a soft touch for the $80 when he ran away from home, and now he wants to GET PAID.

(note; he ran away from home, lied to his parents, was kept after school, and was sexually active by his own accord when he was 12, while being displaced from schools pretty regularly.) We are not talking about the innocent here, but merely an age group.

Yes some of us wish she would have taken us into the close closet and let us have a lesson or two and paid us to boot HO thank you Lord money cause lets face it some of us me included had to wait to get a lesson and some had to pay to get a lesson and some used pictures. Women think because they have become equal members of society and continue to make great strides that there is such thing as total equality amongst men and women. Sorry, that will never happen - men and women will always be different - hence this double standard will never go away.

Just for the record. Our idea of what an adult is, is entirely modern. It dates back only about 150 years and in many countries outside the west, people are considered adults at younger ages; 16, 14, 13 etc...Prior to about 150 years ago most countries considered you legally responsible for your actions and able to make decisions about things such as consent at 12-13 years old. It was only after a major sex scandal in Britain involving the selling of prostitutes that had just come of age that the law was changed.

As another consideration. Nearly every woman in this country shaves their body hair whether it is legs, armpits or elsewhere and most men shave their faces. In effect you are attempting to look like an adolescent. Our cultural concept of beauty is tied to that age. Further, every time a woman dresses up in baby doll pajamas or a catholic school girl outfit, attempting to look sexy, she is actually encouraging the practice of child molestation. You can sit here all day and say you're against it but your actions demonstrate otherwise.

Finally, this accusation is nothing more than a, he said, she said. There was no mention of additional evidence or witnesses. It will be difficult to prove this case in court without such things. This is how many child molesters get away with it. As we can see from the Catholic Church, Penn State and the articles I see on here every month or so about some teacher accused of this, male or female, this issue happens everywhere. It is as much a cultural problem as it is any other type of problem.

Age of consent varies from state to state.. most have set 16. Washington state has a 16/18 set of laws... 16 is the age of consent provided the older person is no more than 60 months older but they also have a communications with minors for immoral purposes. Whether men and women have sex for different reasons is not the issue.. the LAW is. Lock her up.

And that same 50 years ago a husband could not be accused of rape of his wife nor was it grounds for divorce if he wouldn't / couldn't perform. Then again it was more like 100 years ago that 14 was marrying age due to old age was 40 and most were lucky to live to 65 and collect SS. Times change, standards change and certainly morals change. Whether one agrees or not the age of consent is GENERALLY 16 in most states and many raise it to 18 if either is over 18.

To those who think this story is funny, I wonder how you'd feel to find out your eleven year old was raped by a teacher? If this was a man and a little girl no one would be joking and no one should be joking now. This "teacher" needs serious jail time.

That's the whole point, this story hides the fact that this situation will potentially be an egregious double standard (assuming she receives no serious jail time). I have an old saying, "you, as women, can have equality in the boardroom when we, as men, get equality in the courtroom".

I call BS---my ex got more than equality in the courtroom -- skipped to the UK and didn't even comply with the court's rulings. He even filed restraining order (300 lbs 7000 miles away) and got it because I tried to discuss our marriage settlement with him. Don't give me your equality bs!

So now, can I have equality? Thank you sir!

I understand a 27 year old teach with a 17 year old (although still wrong) but a 12-14 year old??? WTF!

Honestly, there were a couple teachers that I would have loved to do it with if I had the chance as a young boy.

They were just wishes - it was not gonna happen

I'm most amazed about these stories is how they are on-going for a time. Not just sudden urges or quick knee jerk decisions but going to each others houses and the like.

TMI in this case makes me wonder how truthful the boy is and if this really happened or was some fantasy on the part of the boy?

That's what they said about girls at the beginning of the last century. Freud called it "wish fulfillment fantasy" or the Oedipal Complex. In hindsight we realize his patients were telling stories of childhood rape.

                                  Freud was deviant.

A story like this is just inviting comments like many I've read here. But thinking back to gr. 9 and that english teacher miss....hmmm. YUP I was certainly hoping. But the fact is this female started in gr 6 of all things! Something quite wrong with that HO.

C'mon teachers(male and female)...keep it in your pants where your students are concerned. I'm tired of reading about this and it seems like every week we're seeing something like this. If you can teach or have taught this student and they are under 21 they are just off limits.

Be honest -- how many of you read the headline and clicked on the story to leave a comment expressing your outrage for a predatory adult male taking advantage of a young girl... only to read the story and see that the genders were reversed, and you were suddenly not so upset by it?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Either send the woman to jail, or stop criminalizing male teachers who do the same.

Ya good point how come the men always get the worst punishment??? Women want to be equal in society they should locked up and punished just as much as they guys. Oh but wait, its different for them...they were in "love"... hahaha

There have been instances of women doing jail time for exactly that. Do your homework! (hehe) But seriously--do your homework.

Ya here's my homework YOU idiot!! Here are the first 2 paragraphs and a quote from the JUDGE: A female high-school substitute teacher in Utah will serve no time behind bars for performing oral sex on a 17-year-old male student, despite comments from the judge that a man would have likely gone to prison. "If this was a 29-year-old male and a 17-year-old female, I would be inclined to order some incarceration," noted 3rd District Judge Mark Kouris during sentencing yesterday for Cameo Patch." Now, why don't YOU do YOUR homework and find us an example of a judge making that statement in the reverse. Moron, wake the F up to real life. And, as long as judges are gonna make F'd up statements and blatant double-standard-decisions like that then nobody has the right to blame the average guy for accepting this double standard - our courts are validifying it for christ sakes!! http://www.wnd.com/2006/09/37982/

Nope, no double standard. It's every bit as disgusting, outrageous and predatory as a male teacher forcing himself on a young girl.
