Connecticut priest arrested on child pornography charges

Alaine Griffin / The Hartford Courant

The Rev. Dennis Carey, left, speaks Tuesday after his arraignment at the Superior Court in New London, Conn. At right is his lawyer, Ron Stevens.

A Connecticut priest arraigned Tuesday on child pornography possession charges says he is getting help for his addiction to the illegal material.

The Rev. Dennis Carey, 65, was released on $100,000 bond, NBCConnecticut.com reported. He was ordered to have no computer or Internet access, no pornography and no contact with anyone under age 13.

Carey resigned Friday as pastor of St. Paul in Chains Church in Waterford after the Catholic diocese in Norwich learned police were investigating him.

His lawyer, Ron Stevens, said Carey was viewing pornography on the Internet and did not have inappropriate contact with children. Carey was scheduled to meet with his psychiatrist Tuesday afternoon, Stevens said, adding that his client has no prior record.

Stevens told The Day newspaper in New London that Carey was staying in “another church location,” but did not elaborate.

On May 29, the Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce in Los Angeles contacted the Connecticut State Police computer crimes task force for help with an investigation into suspected child pornography sent using an AOL email account.

On Thursday, state troopers and the Waterford Police Department executed a search warrant at the St. Paul Parish Rectory, seized items and applied for an arrest warrant for Carey.

Carey turned himself in to state police in Montville on Tuesday morning, Stevens told The Day.

State police say Carey had at least 338 files of suspected child pornography on two laptops, two tower computers and two external drives that state police seized from the church rectory, The Day reported.

The 275 picture files and 63 video files contain images of boys and girls under 16 engaged in sexually explicit acts, according to state police.

Carey was ordained a priest in 1998 after a 25-year career as a certified public accountant in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, according to the diocese.

Bishop Michael R. Cote said he and Carey became aware of the investigation on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Cote issued a statement obtained by The Day:

“We, along with everyone else, will wait to see how the legal process unfolds and to learn the details of the investigation. These allegations are extremely serious and run contrary to everything we believe as a Church. To exploit children in that fashion is absolutely reprehensible. We pray the allegations are not true.

“This is a sad moment for all of us. We always hope we will never again hear about any investigations or allegations of misconduct by priests. For the parish community, for the priests of the diocese, and for me personally, it is extremely difficult. We are all saddened and deeply hurt.”

This is pretty disgusting. What I would like to know is what is the government going to do about the sexually explicit material of the minors being on the internet in the first place? This priest may be guilty of viewing these videos but I am also concerned about who is making these videos and allowing them to be posted for public viewing. These videos should not have been on the internet in the first place. Why are they there? We have internet police who should be making sure this content is not available for public viewing and I think we need to fire these workers for allowing this stuff to get posted on the internet. Obviously, someone is not doing their jobs or you are doing this on purpose to see who is watching. As for me, I don't view internet pornography. I just don't. You guys need to start investigating who posted these videos of these children having sex. These are the real perpetrators. Please find these people and help the victims. Busting this priest viewing this material is one thing. But, catching the people who made these children do these sexual acts would be a much better solution to stopping this deviant practice. Start doing your jobs correctly. It begins with taking out the source, not after you have the end product.

You have no idea how the Internet works, do you? Short of blocking all international Internet traffic, removing this crap is near impossible.

Internet police? Do you really think that there's such a thing as the internet police?

As EngEsq said, there's almost zero possibility of preventing anything from being posted on the internet, one country blocks it, they set up shop on a server in another country.

    @ EngEsq

That is mostly correct, though the larger issue is finding a way for the communities to police themselves. I firmly believe in freedom of internet, and all that goes with it.

I also would suggest that those who maintain and profit from adult websites, or pornographic material, should take a more active role in chasing, catching, and prosecuting those who possess illegal pornography, as well as illicit. After all, the offenders are hurting their business too.

The USA can not, should not, police the internet. It is too daunting a task to start, and one I am certainly not willing to pay for. Government oversight is a sure way to insure that these industries always become profitable for the few deranged and mentally ill purveyors and their patrons.

Bottom line, it is up to us, as a world community, to root out these offenders. I am not sure where to begin with that, other than suggesting that others should report offending material as soon as they come across it.

It would be great if someone had the time to set up an NGO for reporting and tracking this information, though funding may be more sparse than the offenders can overcome.

Could it be worse than an NBC news article ?

      #3.5 - Tue Jul 3, 2012 6:08 PM EDT

It might also be kept in mind that there may be more charges. The article relates that he was not only in possession, but intentionally distributed the material using an AOL email.

This clearly exhibits distribution, a far more deleterious charge than possession.

How are private companies/corporations going to chase, catch and prosecute?

How can we as a country let alone a world root out send offenders when age of consent varies from state to state and country to country. In some countries it's as young as 12 or 13.

At the same time, don't bet your bottom dollar that there are not offenders in the FBI. Here in NY 'we' try to keep our offenders on the bench to be sure they can adequately cover up for their buddies.

It is not a matter of right or wrong, it is merely price.

Some people in the world haven't evolved out of the need for religion, but that will change, since it's all made up foolishness.

Strange and perverted things happen when you have a religion forcing celibacy, while having this entire adoration of children thing happening. It's a structural set-up for pedophilia. You asked for it, Catholics, you got it.

The church will work mightily to limit it's monetary losses and preserve its power.

On the bright side, he can always convert to Muslim and claim it is his right to practice his religion.

Then maybe not, as even Muslims have limits. You can marry them at 9 but must wait till they are 14 to defile them.

        Food for thought.

Don't kid yourself TC. The police are after male pedophiles, not female. How many female teachers have been caught having sex with their students? And the ones that have been caught are just the tip of the iceberg. Men don't have a stranghold on pedophilia.

This is because the females are always perceived as the victims, even when they are the perp.

Some Dr. somewhere will always be willing to swear they were abused as children, making excuse for their mental illness, and subsequent non-prosecution.

Anyone might look up the World Health Organizations statistical analysis of the demographics and find some surprsing information (in detail).

You don't need Religion there is no God outside the goodness inside you, the bad things People do is because they think their is a God to forgive them. If their was a God he would not let the helpless children and animals be hurt in any way. Pray in one hand and spit in the other see which one gets full first. Look at our world and all the Peace we do not have. He should never be forgiven by Man, and live alone the rest of his life.

For a priest to do something like this makes those of us in the Catholic religion lose so much faith. The fact that he had these things on his computers is absolutely disgusting, the fact that he had it on the computers in the rectory is absolutely unbelievable. I don't understand what is wrong with these men and where the malfunction is in their brains but there is something inherently wrong with a man or woman who thinks looking at children in a sexual way is not wrong. Hopefully we never hear that he abused children!
