Another sign of the (heat) times: thousands of dead fish

J. Miles Cary / Knoxville News Sentinel via AP

Crews using rakes and an industrial vacuum remove dead fish from Butterfly Lake in Knoxville, Tenn., on Monday. Some 10,000 bluegills died.

In lakes and rivers across parched areas of the U.S., heat and lower water levels are reducing oxygen levels -- and killing fish populations by the thousands.

At one lake in Delaware, up to 6,000 dead gizzard shad and 600 perch were found floating this week.

"Aggravating this summertime problem, increased temperatures lead to warmer water, which holds less dissolved oxygen," state natural resources spokesman John Clark told NBCPhiladelphia.com.

In South Carolina, some 500 fish died at Lake Hartwell.

Celebrating the warm summer months, as schools let out and the cooling off begins

"It started Sunday afternoon," local resident Brandi Pierce told NBC affiliate WYFF-TV. "We started seeing ten fish popping up out of the water. Then Monday, it was full."

Across South Dakota, fishermen have reported thousands of fish kills in multiple lakes and rivers.

And in Tennessee, a fish kill on Butterfly Lake left a horrid stench in one Knoxville neighborhood.

"It's really putrid," Paula Gumpman, president of the local neighborhood association, told the Knoxville News Sentinel. "It's like after a hurricane. Gooky and yucky."

Some 10,000 bluegills were thought to have died, and city workers were tasked with the cleanup even though the lake is on private property.

"It's a public health issue," said Public Service Director David Brace, "and it just smells real bad."

Mr. Burns-3656054

Thats funny several decades ago(mid to late 70's) I seem to recall scientists AND environmentalists were insisting that we were heading for an ice age.

The argument today isn't weather or not global warming exists. The argument now is weather or not global warming is man made?

No Burns, several decades ago would have been 70 years ago, and weather is spelled whether. This study was done in the 1974. The magazine "Discovery" picked up some information on this and ran with it. Discovery and Popular Science are not scientific journals. Their editors are not scientists. If you had listed any such magazines as a source of information in any college level science class, you'd be laughed out of the classroom. Some scientist postulated that the effects of increased air pollution. from any number of sources including volcanic eruptions, forest fires, etcetera, producing fly ash, smog, and other particulates suspended in the lower atmosphere could possible absorb, refract, and reflect infrared radiation out to space.

Burns, you sound ridiculously impoverished of facts, what constitutes science, actual puplication timelines, and knowing the difference between weather and whether. People such as yourself, just pull hearsay or dreamed up information from the back of your pockets and think that it is all going to make sense. You are way over your head.

Do not worry people it will only get hotter. The only thing that could change the course of global warming is to completely abandon our oil based economy. Unless U have a time machine so we can see how clean fusion energy is harnessed in the future, we're stuck. Stuck with all these fossil fuels and their greenhouse effect.

So instead of investing into algae biodiesel fuel, aquaponics farming, or taxing the corporations that churn out massive amounts of CO2... let's just put yet another tax on the populous that will cripple the poor and middle-class even more. And let's deny people services such as medical care because they drove too far to get to the hospital.

That'll stop global warming in no time!

Hurry Republicans pull at your hair and run around screaming like Road Warrior --

Road Warrior-252445

Repeat after me. I am a Democrat I do believe in man-made global climate warming change. We need to cripple the economy with environmental regulations and force companies overseas because George Soros told me so.

Umm just a few points there Road kill ...

1).ANY companies found contributing to global warming or to make easy enough for you to undesrstand .. "the people making the fishies die"... should be held accountale no matter how much money in donations to republican party they have made!

2). No body needs to force ANY companies oversea's, YOUR BOY Romney's already helped them get there and NOW because Obama has been turning things around in America after republicans like Bush and Romney have done all they could to wreck it, COMPANIES ARE BEGGING TO COME BACK!! But like every good republican Road-Killl don't let the FACTS get in your way! lolol

Its really sad that we are actually watching the destruction of our planet earth right in front of our very own eyes, due to global warming. We're probably never going to convince certain people that global warming actually exists and this climate change is man made. Fox news has them brain washed to believe otherwise and there's no amount of convincing that we can do to change their minds. So the rest of us have to just press on and work towards a cleaner environment, such as renewable energy, solar, wind, battery operated or hybrid vehicles etc etc.

Reply#34 - Sun Jul 8, 2012 3:56 AM EDT

Respectfully, I am not convinced and I think Fox news is honest compared to other sources. I think people need to realize that the earth makes oil, so it is completely natural. If we don't use it, it will accumulate and ooze out into the ocean on its own. The BP oil disaster for example, though BP blew it big time, is an indicator of the vast amount of oil that exists not by man's doing. So much so that it was exceedingly difficult to cap the leak (of a naturally existing reservoir). And unfortunately, so called renewable energies are not without their consumption of fuel. Wind power for example requires absolutely huge amounts of fuel to get it set up. Where I live is a manufacturer of wind turine towers. To move one section (of several) of just the tower requres a dedicated tractor trailer rig with supporting safety vehicles around it during transport (tractor trailers use a lot of fuel). It also requires a dedicated rig to move just one turbine blade (and there are three needed). Then there is the gearbox. Now, we need all of these trucks and equipment to get just one turbine set up (likely including the need for gas guzzling helicopters). Then of course there are miles of wiring that must be ran between all of the other turbines scattered all over the landscape for many miles all of which require scheduled maintenance where someone has to drive a vehicle(s) all over the landscape to get to the turbines. The practicality of it all is worsened by gearbox failures as well. Of course, I left out the manufacturing process that consumes huge amounts of electricity and fuel for machining, welding, assembly and procurement of parts. Hybrid vehicles are not what they would seem either. Although I think the technology is cool, the mileage published by hybrids is not a fair comparison to gas vehicles because a hybrid vehicle will consume power from the grid in addition to the fuel use. I would be willing to say then that a hybrid vehicle consumes very near the same energy overall as a comparable gas vehicle. If we went full bore nuclear energy, then electric vehicles would make sense. Until then, electric vehicles burn fuel in addition to gasoline increasing the load on the grid and producing emissions. And nuclear power is not without it's risks and consequences. One of the fundamental laws of science: Energy in = energy out. Gas, wind, battery or whatever, the energy needed to do a specific job will be the same no matter the source of the fuel.

Somebody has pointed out that there is a correlation between global warming and Democrats in power, either in Congress or the White House. Sounds like a reason for another multimillion dollar scientific study by big liberal government controlled universities.

    #34.3 - Sun Jul 8, 2012 8:16 AM EDT

sure John, let's just do that. NOT!!! Get your head out of your behind and think for yourself. As for Fox being honest, okay first I had to get up off the floor from laughing, now can you say Andrew Breibart and Shirley Sherrod? How does any one edit down a complete video and pass it off as accurate (NBC w/ GZ tape included).

They ruined that woman's life, and all for a gotcha moment. But they did not want that seen. So please do not do the Fox is honest thing, because they are some of the biggest liars over at that entertainment channel. ( It is an insult to news to call them a news outlet.)

Tiredvoter you are just upset that Fox News reporters do not trip over every word that comes out of President Obama's mouth and proclaim it as gospel. Everyone says that FNC is the mouthpiece of the GOP has never watched FNC. During the Bush eras, FNC ran stories on how Bush was messing up (and yes he was messing up) but since FNC is also running stories about how Obama is messing up, it is nor news??????

I thank the Lord each and everyday that I am an Independent and THINK for myself!!!! As for Bush and Fox, they ran stories when he would not toe the party line. That was they way they dealt with him. But I also know that they LIED about him at times also. So do me a favor and PLEASE do not presume or pretend that you know me or what I am thinking, because YOU DO NOT Sir!!!!!

The human species will not go extinct as a result of this global warming. There will be mass extinctions of less widespread and adaptable species, however, and there will certainly be mass die-offs of human beings due to starvation, plagues, and other factors. But extinction of human beings? Nah. Our species will survive.

This is what I say: We should keep doing what we have been doing all along. Let what is happening, happen. Drill, baby, drill! Let the human species suffer the consequences so as to reduce our numbers dramatically. When the disaster is over, Nature will re-balance the ecosystem, and those of us who remain will (hopefully) build a better world on top of the ruins of our narcissistic generation.

I don't believe in the man caused global warming. Your comment reminded me of a program I was watching on Animal Planet not long ago. I don't remember the program title, but Sygourney Weaver was narrating. What caught my attention about it was a comment that (paraphrasing) "early in the history of earth the globe was much warmer. Because of this, food all over the planet was abundant and wild life thrived all over the earth." This is quite contrary to the fear mongering put forth from global warming activists. I would further argue that CO2 is indeed good for the atmosphere and certainly good for plant life. More CO2 means healthy plants means oxygen production. Plants need CO2, we need oxygen.

On a return visit and a stay of over a year to Chicago where I grew up, I noticed a significant change in the weather pattern. Spring and fall were almost non-existent. The weather seemed to go from a very hot summer into a very cold winter. Instead of a clearly defined four seasons that I experienced growing up, it has become two seasons. My guess is that humans have caused this, but the earth will straighten itself out. Not sure if that will include humans or maybe a smaller population of humans.

Every possible excuse to try and support the global warming lie. There is no way man has any basis for global warming primarily because temperature records over history cannot account for a valid scientific test. Valid measurements over time would have to be taken from instrumentation that is known to be calibrated correctly. Not only that, the same instrumentation would have to be used during the course of measurement otherwise "noise" is introduced. Anyone who has been involved in engineering studies should know this. Besides, why is it that cooler parts of the earth are ignored? Oh, and are we to believe these fish actually died for reasons stated in the article? Things are not always as they seem. How is the general public to know what the cause really was. In my opinion, occurences such as these are more likely the cause of a toxin being introduced into the water. Less dissolved oxygen? Maybe slightly, I doubt the problem.

The interesting thing here is that the Public Works department cleaned up a private lake. Does that mean the local tax payers get to swim for free - maybe at least for a day? Maybe a little fishing for what is left? It is lucky the workers were wearing colorful vest or they wold have been run off.

OKAY!!! I was wondering if I was the only one that caught that little tidbit! How much did it cost that taxpayers and why in heaven's name would Public works be obliged to clean up PRIVATE property? Does that mean that they send a bill to the owners? I'm more interested in that aspect of the story since we have lots of personal responsibility calls on these threads, why wasn't the owner responsible for the clean up?

This is a very clear warning of what can happen in our oceans if the ocean temperatures climb too high. We need an international protocol on limiting the growth of human population on this planet, or eventually this will probably be inevitable. This is what is driving all of the negative trends. - RC

I have lived in the same place for 50 years, I have seen hotter Summers and colder Winters, I have seen rain and I have seen drought. The wildest weather I have ever experienced was in the 70s and back then scientists were talking about Global Cooling and even had ideas of spreading black ashes on the Glaciers to absorb more heat.

Also, I remember a time when there were no Herons on my river, no Bass, only Carp, I didn't see an Osprey until the early 90s and an Eagle untill 2000. Now I see them all, we Americans have done a fine job of restoring the earth thus far, we should not rest on our laurels but should remain dilligent, and those of you who are not old enough to remember REAL pollution, should make no comments.

They were talking about global cooling back in the 1970s because that is where the natural cyclic forces should be taking us. But back then they were either completely ignoring or seriously underestimating anthropomorphic influences at the same time. If our world should be cooling according to what the natural forces are doing, that should really tell all of us how serious these anthropomorphic influences are given the latest data sets. - RC

Also, where are all of these devastating chemical spills going into the water...it is the watersheds that are being affected because of the runoff all across the land...you think billions of people in the world or overpop of anything doesnt' affect the world? Only way to stop it at this time is to force draconian laws on how many children people can have...let's see how well you do with that one. The government under (guess who) said of you don't have to follow those regulations, just go ahead and do it for whatever the lowest and cheapest cost and materials. I am sick to death of people like you, how lie, cheat and steal.

Explain why the Exxon Valdez spill is still effecting that ecosystem so many years after that happened?

Tiredvoter The BP oil rig was drilling in International Waters when the spill happened and over a year after Obama took office, so why are you blaming President Bush when you should be pointing your finger at Sec. Gen Amman of the U.N.

Once again fester. Go look it up m'kay!! The regulations for that rig and others were not upheld. And since it was in international waters, they why did this country need to take action? Seems like the WORLD community should have stepped in. And why did BP agree to everything the current Potus administration ask of them? If they did not have to answer to us, then please explain why? Got news for ya. my brother in law is an oil exec, he even said that it was SHODDY construction that was allowed under Bush and he's a Republican!! See not everything is as it seems.

Global warming real or not? Doesn't matter. All i know is that stinking governments can not fix it, they can only gain more power over the people and tighten the leash on them while raising energy prices ludicously which will cause everything to be unbelievably expensive. Only real solution is technological advancements and that comes from the scientists, and as far as i can see there are none yet. By the way to all those under forty....POLLUTION CONTROL TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED LIGHT YEARS....THE COUNTRY IS PRISTINE COMPARED TO WHAT IT WAS IN THE SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES. STOP BEING OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE OVER SOMETHING THAT ONLY TECHNOLOGY, NOT RIDICULOUS TYRANNICAL GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT BUT MAKE EVERYTHING MUCH WORSE FOR EVERYONE. STOP ALLOWING THE LIARS AND ELITIST TO SCARE YOU...GROW UP, CHICKEN LITTLES!

I don't know, but it certainly is not a trend.

Some climate change/warming appears to be going on, but until its true believers grow up and knock off the childish, sky is falling, Chicken Little, fear mongering name calling hysteria, no progress will ever be made. Using the contemptuous term "deniers" instead of skeptics further shows how out of touch they are with the average Americans. All these references to Fox and the cutesy poo names they come up with, whole scale demonetization of anyone who even leans right shows how desperate they are to make their voices heard. They all seem to regurgitate the same bullet points like they are reading off some lefty script. None of them seems to have an original thought, nor seem to be able to question or challenge anything the 97% (more like 60/40) tells them. Time to wake up alarmist warmists

Might as well laugh, it's just as cheap to laugh as it is to cry. And there's nothing we can do about it anyway, except to continue to sit back and watch as the greedy wealthy elite continues to destroy us all, even their own dumbasses, as they delve deeper and deeper into their greedy evil endeavor to have it all. Then, once they have it all, which they have almost succecceded in accomplishing, let's all sit back and laugh at them as we watch them attempt to take it with them to HELL!
