Joshua Stryzanski, 18, is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
A baby girl died and a toddler was in critical condition Saturday after they were left in separate vehicles in the Indianapolis area on a day in which the temperature hit 104 degrees, a record for the date.
Greenfield Police Chief John Jester said a 3-month-old girl was found in a car at 3:35 p.m., the Indianpolis Star reported. The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Jester said the baby's father, Joshua Stryzanski, 18, was being held at the Hancock County jail on a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, the Star reported.
Greenfield is a city of about 20,000 east of Indianapolis.
In the other incident, at about 3 p.m. police broke a window in a Ford Explorer to free a 16-month-old girl in the city of Fishers, northeast of Indianapolis, the Star reported. The child suffered a seizure before being taken to an Indianapolis hospital, a Fishers police spokesman told the Star.
Storms, sweltering heat move east
The temperature inside the SUV after the window was broken was 124 degrees, the Star reported, citing unnamed officials.
Fishers police said the child's mother, Meg Trueblood, 30, of Fishers, was charged preliminarily with felony neglect of a child, the Star reported.
The National Weather Service said the temperature in Indianapolis hit 104 degrees, breaking the record for July 7 of 101, set in 1936. The all-time high for the city is 106, set on July 14, 1936.
In the heat wave gripping the United States this week, at least 61 heat-related deaths have been reported, according to an NBC News count. That number does not include the baby's death.
Triple-digit temperatures continue to blanket many areas of the country. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

MARK S, your attempt at humor is sick. Neither comment is funny, and concerns me whether or not you would do something like this someday. Life is not a cartoon, where the coyote gets up after being hit with an anvil falling off a cliff. It isn't a video game where you get five more chances after being hit with one lethal shot, or it isn't a movie where you get shot 30 times and tie a rag around them and keep on fighting. It's a thin, thin line between life and death and the sooner people realize that once that line is broken, there is no bringing someone back. A pop up timer. Seriously? Stupid, incompetent people should just be forced to put their children up for adoption. You're just going to ruin the child's quality of life one way or another... and why bother putting all that effort into a kid when it seems like you either don't care for yourself, those around you or both based on your actions anyway?
It is unbelievable that this is still happening. Makes you wonder if these evil people do this to acctually get rid of their kids on purpose. Did anyone read the article about the dog that found the abandoned baby in the woods and stayed with it during the night to keep it warm so it would not die. The owners of the dog then found their pet and then saved the childs life. This dog is worth more than any of these morons leaving their pets and kids in cars to bake to death. Hats off to this dog. I hope these pieces of crap get whats coming to them. Fires of hell can't be hot enough for them!
What in the hell do we have to do? As Detroit and where other cars are made, going to have to b e responsible to start making signs that pop up on the dash to remind the parents to check that they have a child in the car, and if they do, to remind them to take it with them. Or make a car, that if you do leave the children in the car, which it will automatically start up and turn on the AC. Or do we need an alarm to go off in the car, or have ONSTAR someway to monitor and have police put in route to that car. Then take the children away from the parents, and for a year, take the parents for a car drive in the heat of summer, no one around to help them, lock the doors, and leave the parents sitting in the car in the heat, until they become unconscious t. and when they are about dead, rescue them! Do any of you think this might work?
I think what we need to do is impose much stiffer penalties on these type of brain farts. Every incedent should carry a felony charge, that will make them think about leaving children in the car.
I think what he is charged with is a felony charge, just not stiff enough. This should be manslaughter. Plus his right to reproduce should be taken away because even if he got manslaughter this waste of my oxygen will get out eventually.
What he was charged with was the crime he commited. And yes it is a Felony, "child neglect" is not a Misdemeanor. But it is a charge enhanced by the fact that a death resulted from the neglect. He will see more prison time as a result of the charge then just manslaughter. And silverrob you spelled incident wrong where is abc when you need him. Oakdog...truth is, with all of the electronics in cars today, some of that might actually be in the realm of possibility. One problem with having that type of solution is that it could lead to people being more irresponsible with children, pets, etc.

I'm all for tying up and duct taping these bastards in the heat of the day,with the windows up, water on the dash a foot away out of reach. I'm for capital punishment for crimes such as murder and child abandonment. I even believe in capital punishment for children. The reanos being is that the ACLU believes that they (the kids )did'nt know what they were doing. I say the two boys at Columbine that killed numerous students,putting together all of those weapons. Isn't neglect of a dependent resulting in death the same weight (legally) as aggravated abuse that results in death? Is a capital crime in IN? Somebody with more time should look that one up.

The government should pay $2500 to all who will be sterilized. The savings in welfare, handouts, crime, prison costs, and poverty would be enormous. Of course that would also mean fewer Democrats.

All the wrong people are breeding. What is this 18 year old loser doing having a child in the first place? They both need to be forcibly sterilized. The sooner the US requires an educational and financial means test for anyone wanting to have children, the sooner this country will be on a road to success instead of the road to poverty and failure it is currently on.

You're an idiot. I do not want anyone telling me that I have to be sterilized because of some standard the government creates. That is what is happening now with our current president. Sterilization is not answer. What needs to change is the education of parents. It may be common sense to most of the world that you don't leave ANYONE in a car like this, but there are those whom need to be told.

I take exception to that comment Looser. I am a Republican, but not Rt wing. I believe whole hartedly in abortion when needed and especially if the girl is under 18. I will go even further and say that physically and mentally handicapped children uner 18 should especially be able to get abortions. NO child should be forced to have a child to encumber them and ruin their lives forever. I believe it is the womands right to choose if they want to abort or not no matter the circumstances. And to rapists of children and adults they should either be chemically or physically castrated and pee through a tube for the rest of thier lives. Scott, I am a democrat and I don't think all republicans / right wingers or whatever are people who don't believe in family planning. However the media has been trying to convince me of this for some time just as they have been trying to convince you that all democrats / left wingers are jobless welfare receiving hippies. I so agree. Why make these people have kids when they don't even want them? In the long run it cost us more money to take care of them. We already know they will not use protection so that's out of the question, BC would be a better option. About face book some parents stay on there for hours. some even post things bout them getting high,in some cases i'm wondering where are the kids at? Why are you even getting high in front of your children? No not all parents are on there doing that but a lot are.... It amazes me how some people act like fb is their life. Not knocking fb but in some cases it is what it is. PEOPLE take care of your kids. Everyone knows not to leave kids in a car,I don't care if its hot or not....these people make me sick. Their punishment should involve being left in a poorly ventilated vehicle with no food nor water in the hot sun. This should be a punishment to anyone that leaves children, especially a baby and toddler in a car.

Everyday I am amazed at how dumb people are and how much dumber they are getting. Leaving a child in your car for any reason now a days is as dumb as not reporting your child missing for 30 days.

When I worked a Rite Aid there was a mom that left her baby in the car and a customer could hear the babiy screaming. so we paged the parent and she had enough nerve to give us all a dirty look, we told her next time we'll just call the police. I was suprised she didnt call our manager and complain.
They must have been shopping at Wal*mart getting their beer and beef jerky.

I think we need to go back to the old "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" way of doing things and put both of these people in cars while the temperature goes up past 100 degrees and let them enjoy the warmth. The only difference is maybe nobody comes to rescue them. Hope that's not to harsh.
