Baby dies, toddler hospitalized after being left in cars in Indiana

Hancock County Jail

Joshua Stryzanski, 18, is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

A baby girl died and a toddler was in critical condition Saturday after they were left in separate vehicles in the Indianapolis area on a day in which the temperature hit 104 degrees, a record for the date.

Greenfield Police Chief John Jester said a 3-month-old girl was found in a car at 3:35 p.m., the Indianpolis Star reported. The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Jester said the baby's father, Joshua Stryzanski, 18, was being held at the Hancock County jail on a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, the Star reported.

Greenfield is a city of about 20,000 east of Indianapolis.

In the other incident, at about 3 p.m. police broke a window in a Ford Explorer to free a 16-month-old girl in the city of Fishers, northeast of Indianapolis, the Star reported. The child suffered a seizure before being taken to an Indianapolis hospital, a Fishers police spokesman told the Star.

Storms, sweltering heat move east

The temperature inside the SUV after the window was broken was 124 degrees, the Star reported, citing unnamed officials.

Fishers police said the child's mother, Meg Trueblood, 30, of Fishers, was charged preliminarily with felony neglect of a child, the Star reported.

The National Weather Service said the temperature in Indianapolis hit 104 degrees, breaking the record for July 7 of 101, set in 1936. The all-time high for the city is 106, set on July 14, 1936.

In the heat wave gripping the United States this week, at least 61 heat-related deaths have been reported, according to an NBC News count. That number does not include the baby's death.

Triple-digit temperatures continue to blanket many areas of the country. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

Who does this, someone who can't think of anyone but themself....the mom was shopping for an hour when someone saw the baby in the car....the dad of the baby that died - the grandpa tried running the baby to the hospital when they found it because they apparently live close to the hospital....the dad of the baby thought he left it at someone's house or something really pathetic like that...it was hot as hell here that day! Sometimes you can fix stupid, it's a little tougher to fix selfish!

That 18 yr old 'father' looks like he has a mental disability or he just looks stupid. Whoever would put a baby in this kid's hands is as disabled or stupid as he is! People who leave their children (or pets) in cars on hot days, or any time, are beyond negligent and should be arrested immediately for torturing innocent living creatures. What blows my mind is that these idiots can actually drive a car! You would think that anyone with a mind that tells them its OK to shut their 3 mo. or 16 mo. babies into the car in 104 degrees (or at all) would not have the ability to function beyond a small child's mentality!! But obviously they know just enough to make them dangerous! God bless those babies, may they be in a far better, safer place!

I don't care if you are 18 or 80, everyone knows you don't leave a living being of any sort in a car even when the temperatures are in the 80s.

I agree with some posts on here. This appears to be a form of murder. They can accept neglect and get slapped with a small prison sentence and a fine.

I was told by a friend that she and her father walked past a car that had a dog in it during the sweltering heat. Her father ignored the problem and just went about his business. I would have smashed the window on the car to save the animal. Of course I would do the same for a child as well. No 2nd thoughts and let them try to sue me. Of course I would have to come up with an excuse why the drivers eyes were black and blue but I don't think the police would notice because they would be busy handcuffing the girl or guy.
