Father held over triple child murder in Wisconsin

A father was arrested over the killing of three young girls in River Falls, Wisc., on Tuesday, police said.

Police were called to a home on Morningside Avenue around 3:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. ET) by the children’s mother, who was concerned about their safety after she said the father made statements about their wellbeing.

When officers got there, they noticed the smell of gas in the home and found the bodies of three girls between the ages of five and 11.

Police say the father, identified as 34-year-old Aaron Schaffhausen, turned himself into police.

Police Chief Roger Leque said, “All of us are saddened by this tragedy. At this time, there is no danger to the greater community arising out of this incident.”

The mother of the children, who was not home at the time, is safe and is assisting police in the investigation.

I would die for my son. Without question. In a heartbeat. It stuns me that someone could hate another person so much that they would destroy something precious to them both. I could never ever hate someone so much that I wuld intentionally be responsible for something as simple as a paper cut to my kid... and he's 24, not a child even. What a very sick man Aaron Schaffhausen must be. And what a painful life the girls' mother is going to have... I can't even imagine.. don't want to imagine... her THREE girls gone. Dead. Awful.

Oh, look, some bait in the water - yum, my favorite - ethos and pathos flavored, gulp. Now that I'm all emotionally charged, I will forget there are bigger issues, issues we could address if our bellies were not so full of ethos and pathos adrenalin. We need blinders if we are ever to get past all of the heart string pulling the media uses to distract us from real issues that affect us all.

Its the usual tactic by a repuke. What they don't want us to notice is that the lovely state of Wisconson is the same repuke state that passed that bill against unions not long ago. So of course something this sick will happen in a repuke state...only goes to show they even eat their own.

We can hash and rehash this horrible event. The real question is: How can we prevent this from happening again today? It seems that everyday, I read of an event of similar horror, and yet they continue on and on. How can we stop these monstrous acts? I'll be the first to say that I don't know.

My ex was a mean, violent man. I wouldn't have put it past him to have done the same. However, the courts/judge ordered visitation, and I was stuck with the order. Fortunately, the craphead ex finally abandoned our kids for his life of leisure and fun. He never paid his support, either, but in the end, we survived, and all is okay with us. Him, not so much. (Karma is a wonderful thing.) Nevertheless, we were put in harm's way by the courts. I wonder if this was part of this horror story of these children's murder?

None of us has a crystal ball to see into the future to know that terrible events, such as these, will occur. We must be ever vigilant to protect the helpless, as these now lost girls. Like I said, I don't know "how," only that we must.

I don't buy that it's a psychotic break, either. If that's the case, we have far too many psychos loose in this world. This was a mean and deliberate act. He knew exactly what he was doing and why. I can think of a number of punishments for this piece of murderous trash, but none is legal in this country. Perhaps we should change the law to make the punishment fit the crime. If the penalty is equal to the crime, perhaps criminals would rethink their violent tendencies. It would be a preventative measure. (I also think that death penalties should be broadcast for all to watch, not unlike hangings in the earlier days.)

I'm open to suggestions, but the bottom line is that these behaviors MUST stop. They are totally unacceptable. Their perpetrators must be punished in such a way that the rest of the populace will understand that these actions are wrong.

My deepest sympathies to the mother. I hope I never know her pain and anguish. May she find comfort, (but I don't know how.)

zapper wrote "It seems that everyday, I read of an event of similar horror, and yet they continue on and on."

This is because 300 occurences in a US population of 300M is rare. When the population was 200M, you read about this 2/3 of the days.

"My ex was a mean, violent man. I wouldn't have put it past him to have done the same. However, the courts/judge ordered visitation,"

You feel this way only because women believe that mothers, but not fathers, should have parental access to children when the mother has a disagreement with the father. The web is filled with one-sided sob stories from loser yet vindictive wives and how their sex-for-money scheme failed.

Vincent, How many times were you sewed up from being stabbed by your ex? I've got some scars. How many times did you have your broken bones set? I've got x-rays. Hmmm. Yeah, that sex-for-money scheme must be working for you very well. This story, and many others, show that violence happens. (Women do it, too, I'm not making excuses.) However, when evidence is given, the courts should be listening, not just following some set of arbitrary rulings that say visitation is this to that. The door swings both ways, and I seriously doubt that this is the first time the father in this story was violent.

N. O.--we are quite safe and well. The kids are now grown (in their 30s), and they are excellent people and parents. They are independent, smart, admired, competent and well employed. They both are sought out by their peers and employers. I couldn't be more happy with them. (BTW, their father deserted them entirely by the time they were 5 and 6. So being in a single-parent household wasn't too bad for their upbringing.)

i have no doubt that the courts exacerbated zapper's problem. and, most likely this tragic story. they always do. they are comprised mostly of retired divorce "lawyers", whose inhuman tactics designed to bleed people's life savings into their own accounts, and pretend they are doing someone a great service in doing so, often result in violence. they deal in hatred, connivance, bullying, and pain -- all designed to protract proceedings, torture the poor people caught up in the system and pad their own wallets. in all too many cases of violence, there is some divorce lawyer behind the scene, who tortured the unstable individual with his/her customary bag of tricks until they snapped.

Vincent

You're way off base guy...but then you COULD be one of those vindictive losers who disparage/harass the women who have the good sense to dump you.

Yes women commit violence -- and that's NOT OK -- but they do NOT kill/injure/hospitalize others near to the same extent men do (look up FBI murder statistics for proof). So Zapper's point, that granting visitation to fathers with a history or propensity of violence like her ex is a big mistake and can lead to tragedy as we hear in this article.

Take a look in the mirror sweetheart and evaluate your behavior in life, and when youre done with that evaluate your poor choices in women. It must be hard to be such a powerless victim in life. One reason why these things keep happening is because of the substandard mental health system in this country, which is a direct result of the substandard health care system. The father may not have lived a psycho life, but he could have used counseling. However, murdering ones children does qualify as a psychotic break.

The universities of the world have spent millions training psychiatrists and psychologists ever since psychology became a college discipline at the beginning of the last century. For what? Where are these people? And one of the top ten highest paid professions in the world. For what? So if no one cares, how can money really be the problem now?

The one thing I can comment on is how often these sensational stories make the national "news" almost every day. Why? These kinds of killing have happened almost daily throughout recorded history and are certainly nothing new. Well, I clicked on the story, you clicked on the story... it sells. It is the age-old fascination with the macabre that the media exploits to make a buck. I guess to me the real question is why do we all want to be informed of every sickening act perpetrated in a country of 300 million people? I guess it's human nature to rubber-neck an accident or read about a heinous murder... and it's human nature to exploit that tendency to make $$$. All media does it not just MSNBC.

I hate my sons father, but I would never in a million years imagine harming my child just because of something his dad did or didn't do. Now, his wife on the other hand, I can see her trying to harm my child just because it isn't hers and she hates me that much. (they weren't together when I was with him, he left me for her.)

I'll never understand how people can harm children. It makes me hurt.

@zapper asks "How can we prevent this from happening'?

Let me share my thoughts based on having lived not all that far from River Falls:

NW Wisconsin is largely an enclave of little to no education; poverty; extremely narrow world view; misogyny; greed; and cruelty to women, kids, heck, any form of living thing. There are pockets that have barely made it to the 20th century let alone the 21st. It has been so isolated for so long that anything new ~ people, ideas, industry ~ is deemed bad without examination. The exception being social misfits who refuse to accept mores, norms, and laws. Many municipal and county governments are so corrupt, they make Illinois look prim and proper. At least cities like Chicago don't try to skate the pretense that politicans, cops, et. al. are pure as the driven snow.

I am certain there are other pockets of social pathology around the country just as bad.

As long as women and children are considered and treated as chattel, these horror stories will go on. One county judge uses this standard for domestic abuse and violence : unless there are blood, broken bones, or at least bruises, it didn't happen. Most such cases are pleaded down to disorderly conduct and the abuser walks. I wonder how many time Jessica Schaffhausen was denied protection for herself and her daughters. Did she hide the nightmare they lived for lack of social support?

I have no easy answers but these questions need to be asked : How do we ensure that all members law enforcement and the court system take domestic abuse seriously? How can we rid society of county sheriffs who call the domestic abuse shelter demanding to know who has sought refuge there? How do we form a support network in isolated areas? How do we empower women to stand up to the good ol' boys' club when they are economically and socially vulnerable?

Now, there will be those, no doubt, who will rip me for the picture I have painted. That's fine. They may be very fortunate to not have seen what I have seen. They may not have stood as an advocate for vulnerable women and children. They may not have driven back roads and witnessed the squalor.

This story seems like another "honor" killing to me. People said Muslim live in 11 centuries law, but it seems to be Christian lives in 16 centuries law. Both are equally outdated and reply on centuries old book for guidance.

    #1.31 - Wed Jul 11, 2012 1:18 PM EDT

I am saddened by this storey. I believe the systems in Wisconsin are not pro mom or pro child. They are pro father even if the father is mentally ill. There are many people that can fake their way through the system and our lawyers, GALS, judges, and police officers continue to side with males despite the fact that women and children are in danger. I have 4 children, have been physically abused by my husband, and he continues to have 50/50 custody of my kids ---- despite the fact that he has also abused them (because the Bible says it is ok). Something has to change. Someone in the system needs to take a stand and help those in need. Children should not be placed in the hands of unstable people. I am so so sad for this mom's loss and I am troubled by the number of fathers who have recently killed their children, wives, and themselves. There is something deeply wrong with our way of life and it has to change.

There is so much mental illness going in this world that is untreated, either because the person doesn't have access or because the person can refuse treatment. This person must have exhibited symptoms of mental illness before this incident, but now it is ok to be crazy and you can't lock up anyone for almost any reason until they kill someone.

I realize when they opened to doors to the mental illness facilities that there were those few that should never have been there but an annual eval would have solved that. Then they shut down all the facilities, usually only one left in a state that now has waiting lists. So now everyone accepts the fact that if you are mentally ill you get to run around creating chaos and misery where every you go, you don't have to get or follow treatment, you can be on the dole using drugs and alcohol and acting out whenever you want.

Yes I realize there are those who are responsible, but they are the exceptions not the rule.

This guy was crazy his family and friends would have seen the symptoms but would have dismissed them, not believing in their "sane" brains that anyone would do this type of thing.

waukone....the mission of the American mental health industry sounds great on the surface. However, in reality, what it was and has mostly been is another corrupt industry that seeks only social control and profits. It was merely the tool of the social elites (the popular folks) to control and torment the less popular (those who held different beliefs or didn't conform to our mindless, regimented worker-consumer society). If you were black, poor, deemed less "intelligent," weren't Christian, didn't work 40+++ hours a week, didn't aspire to be some elite working slave, or didn't do something the elites wanted you to do...you could be locked up for life in a nuthouse, castrated, etc.

One time when we thought we could make him go in for a few months and get the serious help he needed, they came back about 10 minutes before his court appearance saying he had to do what he did AGAIN in the SAME county before he could be put in the hospital. I tried to contact the NATIONAL mental health people, and I didn't even get a reply back.

He may have mental illness but very well could have been legally sane at the time of killing his children (knowing right from wrong). I can not see how any sane person could kill their own children, but it's been noted through time that it's happened.

My native american grandparents use to tell me stories of their great-grandparents stories of when a child was born with a defect the medicine woman/man would take the child and kill it (for lack of better words). I know this isn't the same day and age or even the same mindset because now we have services in place to help but as some of you have posted those services have dwindled and are relatively hard to get.

Too many times have I read about someone killing their kids in revenge when the other parent leaves. I wont even touch on the PPD argument above, until you have experienced it- you can't say it's not real, however, not everyone has a classic case all cases vary in severity in all mental health diagnosis.

Ages ago my pool shooting partner had dated a man that was abusive, she lost a child, and had left him. He was so hell bent on making her pay for her leaving he stalked, harassed her at her job, tried to get her fired, vandalized her home, and finally he did the unthinkable. He sent her a letter and cassette tape in the mail, and then blew his brains out. She never listened to the tape or read the letter because it started out it's your fault I am dead. The cops confiscated it and she refused to read or listen to anymore because he left a note saying that if he had ever died it was because of my friend. Of course the cops are going to have investigate her even if it looked like a suicide. She went through hell and too this day lives with what he did. She always believed had she not miscarried and gave birth to his baby (which gave her the courage to leave), he would have killed his child, possibly her, and then himself.

Manyyyyy parents are divorced and share custody, and the children grow up fine and don't end up dead. What the difference between these kinds of couples I can not even speculate the difference. So many variables and situations can cause the equation to be not linear.

Be glad you can't relate in this situation (all we know is he gassed his kids for unknown reason), because as a counselor we tell our clients, because you can't understand/feel/see/think like this person is because you don't have the same mindset.

Because his sole focus was on hurting the mother of these girls. That's all he saw in his psychotic rage. He didn't care about the children, didn't care about himself (his possible life without parole prison sentence or a death sentence), didn't care about anything or anyone... all he could see was his blind hatred and rage toward his wife. And he wanted to hurt her, obviously. That's who was the target -- his intended victim -- the mom. What a sick fuque.

That doesnt mean he is more mentally stable. Only a demented mentality would kill 3 people regardless of the reason why.

        @ Creek Dog, 6dogs,

What has Wayne said that you think is wrong?! I have scrolled down too and read his comments and He painted the picture the way it is. You don't have to like his comments but I share similar opinions with him. Before you go to other countries to force your Ideals on the people, first clean up your own house and by the way, I'm an American.

Google this guy -- Aaron Schaffhausen -- there are several more articles with more detail.

They've been divorced for a year. It could have been spite or revenge on his part. It could be not wanting to pay child support.

I have a friend whose waste-of-oxygen ex tried to kill their daughters a couple of times when he decided he 'couldn't afford' them any more. Usually after the latest baby-mama had popped one out for him.

I always think, there must have been some warning signs about the mental stability of the father's and mother's, who chose to murder their children, instead of dealing with their problems in life. Tragic waste and horrible sickness for the rest of that mother's life. There is no real consolation when you lose a child, I know, I lost my youngest son, in a car accident in March, and I felt that I somehow failed him. I hope she has a family to surround her with love and care.

There is no punishment that is suitable for sick people like this. Maybe a long drawn out death, like a "Saw" movie, or just another double tap. Quick and cheap! Three more precious ANGELS in heaven and one sick, dimented individual here on Earth to waste more of taxpayers money and time.

Everyone in this country wants to get all outraged over Honor killings in other countries and cultures. Really go off saying how stupid others are because of their religious beliefs and culture.

Yet show no outrage when this crap happens here! This shows just how sick this country is, much more that in others...

It's happening more and more here in the U.S., murder / suicides, just killing their children and even abusing them till death.

Here they do it because they're WHACKED out, others it's a culture thing.

So stop looking down your noses at others and lower your noses and sniff your own crap! In fact you should look at yourself first long before looking at others. Clean your own house up first before ( U.S. ) before you think others should change their ways and beliefs.

Americans are far more screwed up with their religious beliefs than the Muslums are with theirs.

There are more mental people here than anywhere else in the World! More people suffering from depression than anywhere. Not counting the largest prison population in the World...

Ya'll think this is a Christian nation, always saying, 'God Bless America' well you better get with your God and find out what's gone wrong, cause this country ISN'T blessed by your God....

If this man confessed to the murders, then no trial, execute him now! No waste of tax payers money, life in prison and 0 T.V.'s in his cell or given any food! Eye for an eye? Do the very same thing to him that he did to those daughters of his.

Parents killing their kids, kids killing their parents, grandparents, Spouses killing spouses and children, not counting neighbors killing neighbors....With some trying to claim ' stand your ground '. Which is pure B.S.

It's happening everyday..... And Ya'll want to spend your time looking at other countries and cultures!

        Sniff your own poop first!

There cannot be full justice given in this life for what this person has committed. For how can he repay three innocent young lives snuffed out? The blood on his hands can never be removed and there is no punishmet that man can devise which is adequate. One can only hope, some day he will face their Creator and in the horror of standing before Him in the fullest sense of knowing what he has done, realize that an eternity of damnation lies before him. While the lives he had hoped to end permanently, in fact do continue onwards filled with happiness and love. Surrounded by all those dearest and most loved to the children. He will know how terrible the wrath of God is and the complete Justice due to him. For those who believe no such life exists beyond death, believe what you will. But for all those who believe we have souls and our journey in mortality is but a preparation for the next step of progression, we can find hope in believing these sweet children are beyond any further suffering and are at peace.Unlike the untold suffering, the permanent fate which awaits that of their killer.

Because the word freedom has been twisted away from its original meaning. You need two things in general in your life. you need freedom to do what you want, but you also need structure so what you do does not injure or cause any issues with anyone else.

But when the level of freedom we have is twisted by an obvious controlling possessive freak, then problems occur. He did not care about those children, but since it would appear that he was a controlling person, and thats a guess, and also he would have to have the idea of payback probably also, lot of people believe in payback when they get wronged, he went out of his way to hurt his wife and probably by taking the children away from her. and she will live with that for the rest of her life.

A similar thing occurs in the other one where the mother gassed her children. her life was miserable so therefore their lives were miserable. So therefore if she was going to commit suicide then she should also take the kids with her as in the depressed state she was in, her kids would only have miserable lives therefore it was not worth anyone living. Unfortunately for her they died and she lived.

For what its worth when i was growing up there were problems granted. but the family unit functioned better than it does now. I remember my father and uncles taking care of their father when he got old. Now the practice is find a reason to put em in a nursing home and get at their money now, why should i wait till they die. I NEED IT NOW>

I feel terrible for that mother. I hope she is doing ok after such a horrid tragic thing happening to her. How someone so evil can rip from her the only thing that was probably keeping her alive is just beyond me. I hope he rots in jail, I hope they literally destroy him inside those walls. He deserves no mercy for what he has done. My children are near the ages of those girls and it breaks my heart to think of what they went through by their own fathers doing. How their OWN FATHER could do such harm is just so sad and tragic, he gave them life, how his anger could just overcome him to a point that he felt he could take them away to get back at a woman that he once loved and cared for, that he shared created life with is just so upsetting to me.

For those saying this is happening more and more, keep in mind the huge increase in population and the wide ranging info abilities of the internet. I have an idea for the criminal justice system as regards child abusers, child murderers, and other crimes that receive special consideration in prison by isolating them from the general population. Put them in Gen Pop. Let them wonder every day whether or not some fellow inmate will solve all their anxiety problems. Don't want to face that prison justice, don't do the crime. The only thing I have against the death penalty is it ends all problems for the offender while leaving the victims, friends and families with theirs.

I'm sure the reason she might have something against men is because 90% of the time when this horrible stuff happens it involves a man. And when some men respond to a criticism by attacking appearance it reinforces the less than stellar opinion she may hold on the way men may respond in a crisis (divorce, separation, etc.).

Hey Freedom, I have no facts, I was only repeating the inanity of the statistic that Commentingbecauseican presented. The idea that I forwarded was that to attack on a personal level is not arguing a position or opinion and reinforces the negative image that women often have regarding some mens ability to cope in stressful situations that include females. ( Attacks on both genders often get downplayed and dismissed by the police until there is a tragedy.)

We have hope and change in one hand and #@!& in the other, and we can see which one is filling up quicker!. We should expect more as obama drains the hope from the USA.

What is your problem this is not about Obama. This is about three dead children who was killed by a useless whack job of a father. I do not see how politics enter this story. Further more the hope was drained from this country before Obama ever took office.

You got that one right! Surprised nobody said anything about race, or that the family was probably on welfare. Stick to what little bit of facts were stated.

Some people should be tested to see if they are fit mentally enough to have & raise children. There are near eight billion people on this planet. And, not all if any were planned much less wanted.

Why on earth can't people wait & have a lot of fun in life so they can mature enough to have children to love & be mature & caring & be responsible.

I am not seeing the out rage and the call for death for this father gasing his kids as I did yesterday of the mother that gased hers and attempted suicide. Silly I thought men were here to protect and nuture their off spring as much as a women.

Dear lord. A hammer? How sick and twisted. That poor boy must have had a terrifying end. Reading the news is becoming depressing. I think I'll go hug and kiss my kids now.
