Army finds NASCAR racing less attractive option for recruiting youth

Chris Graythen / Getty Images file

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet, qualifies for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 24, 2012 in Concord, N.C.

With the backdrop of a looming political fight over recruitment spending, the Army is putting the brakes on its costly sponsorship of a NASCAR racing team.

On Wednesday, the Army announced that it would stop sponsoring Stewart-Haas Racing’s No. 39 Chevrolet driven by Ryan Newman in 2013. The Army allocated $8.4 million in sponsorship spending for this year's 12-race season.

The Army has been in NASCAR for 10 seasons. In addition to the highly visible Army race car, the marketing with the racing league included interactive kiosks at the track, engagement areas where recruiters could talk to prospects and educational programs in high schools.

The Army will continue a similar sponsorship of NHRA dragster racing.

The decision to leave NASCAR comes as Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota and Rep. Jackson Kingston of Georgia are pushing an amendment that would prohibit military sponsorship of sports.

McCollum lost a House vote a year ago to end military sponsorships of NASCAR, professional wrestling and fishing, but is trying again to have the approximately $80 million in sponsorship money cut from the defense budget.

John Myers, the Army’s civilian director of marketing, told msnbc.com that the move had nothing to do with politics, but more to do with declining budgets and a changing audience of NASCAR.

NASCAR fans are trending older than the 18-34 demographic that the Army targets for its recruitment efforts, he said.

“It’s been skewing older, and in comparison to our other motor sports property, NHRA, it didn’t measure up as well,” Myers said.

McCollum applauded the Army's decision to pull out of NASCAR.

"The Army made the right move to eliminate a wasteful program and protect taxpayer dollars — which has been my goal all along," she said. "Congress is facing a very difficult budget environment, and I want taxpayer dollars protected, even at the Pentagon.

"I will continue to work to save taxpayer dollars by ending all of the Pentagon's multi-million dollar professional sports sponsorships of motor racing, bass fishing and ultimate fighting."

Myers said the Army will abide by laws laid out by Congress for recruitment spending, and acknowledged the value of sports marketing is being debated.

“There is a dialogue about the value of these things,” he told msnbc.com. “I would hope that Congress would be mindful of the Army’s interest in being an attractive option for America’s youth. One of things we have to do is put our case before America’s youth in various way and one of the ways is sports. Sports are where the kids are who are likely qualify to the Army."

I can't believe those of you blaming this on the First Lady and the Democrats withdrawing from the Speedway! I'm a die-hard NASCAR fan, but I don't believe the government should be paying millions of dollars to sponsor ANY sport. Everyone wants to cut spending and this is a start - if Congress wants to cut food stamps, then also cut this sponsorship that doesn't even result in recruitment. I wonder how much we spend every weekend for fly-overs? The military can still maintain a presence at sporting advents with the color guard and advertisements.

We'll never recruit intelligent people to the US Army or anywhere else until we change the recruiting standards. As another poster mentioned, the GED allowance is ridiculous. Josh and the rest of you narrow minded haters - this has ZERO to do with O and Michelle. It has everything to do with threatened cutbacks in Pentagon waste, and NASCAR recruitment is a poster child for Pentagon waste. It was the Pentagon's decision to advertise in the first place, and you can bet if recruitment were higher via NASCAR this cutback would not have happened. Get used to cutbacks, and stop being so shortsighted about who makes PR decisions for the Pentagon.

Anybody who supports a huge deficit and huge military for invasions of foreign countries just to capture their natural resources, like Bush II did in Iraq, instead of spending that money at home to better its citizens have their priorities just where defense lobbyist want them.

There will be a time that this war dependent nation will bring back the draft. Only the wealthy will be able to avoid the draft. Over 50% of all discretionary spending goes to the DoD---not counting the VA, FBI, NSA, etc. How much "defense" does a country need when we haven't had the mainland attacked by another "country" since the War of 1812. (Hawaii was a territory.)

Get those kids ready to be drafted. Mr Romney has promised to increase spending on the military and broaden the scope.

I find this story amazing, disturbing, and very typical of our military wasting hard-earned taxpayer money having been a senior contracting officer for DoD, and having worked for the DoD unit ESGR that also had an illegal Race car to the tune fo $400,000 dollars! ESGR (known as the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reservices). I was brought into ESGR to clean up their mess, based on the outcome of a DOD Inspector General investigation in 2003-4 that had over 200 unauthorized commitments made by various ESGR personnel, and an illegal contract for advertising on a ESGR race car for $400K. Even though the contract was an improper one, issued by a Marine Corps Colonel that did not hold an authorized CO's warrant (which you must have), that one thing they did get right was the price of $400K with racing team Richard Childress. So my question to DOD's marketing manager, the flag officers that permitted a $8 million dollar yearly contract versus a $400K contract begs the question, "was somebody in DOD contracting getting a kickback, receiving some perks, or planning on a better future job somewhere else down the line after leaving DoD?"

The point is that if ESGR could advertise their huge logo on a Richard Childress race car for NASCAR at $400K yearly, what numbskull Contracting Officer authorized and award a contract for the same thing for $8 million yearly (20 times more than it should have been?"

As a taxpayer, former federal employee (now retired), former contracting officer, when I hear things like this is makes me sick that our DoD and Federal government literally piss our hard earned tax money down the drain on frivolous crap like race car and dragster advertising to attract little boys and girls to join the military. Oh, yeah, I was a military officer too, and I joined and served because I needed a job and it did not take some BS advertising by a bunch of numbskull flag officers, contracting folk in the military to make me want to join. With millions of people out of work, you do not have to advertise to get people to join. Lastly, if the CO and SES that approved that contract worked for me--I would fire their asses!

So then ... how do you attract people to join our all volunteer military? No advertising means no more Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, Golden Knights, no more Marine Drill Team, etc. All of those programs fall under advertising ... more aptly called recruiting. There are lots of these programs with less visibility. Ensuring that America's military is sustained by willing and able young men and women, with appropriate character and education is a very tough problem. How do you convince young people to enlist and understand the up-side benefits (there are many) of a military career without some advertising? Spending money on high visibility programs gets them to stop and listen and maybe learn more.

On the other hand, you must support a return to the draft. Great! That would eliminate the need for all that expensive advertising and, best of all, get the other 98% of patriotic Americans between 18-35 to stand up and really 'support the troops'. Let them show just how much they love their country, right?

The decision to leave NASCAR comes as Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota and Rep. Jackson Kingston of Georgia are pushing an amendment that would prohibit military sponsorship of sports.

Sponsorship of Sports? How about no sponsorships? Sponsorships are way too costly and the exposure they given as advertisement isn't a good return. How many prospects have sponsorships provided to recruiters? As a recruiter you need items/ways to get in front of your prospects. It's about numbers and cold calling off a ASVAB list is not the way. So yes to advertisements but no to sponsorships.

The groupes you mention are allocated funds to go and represent their branch of service. These are Active Military Members who are the Best of the Best. They are on payroll and don't get paid extra to do what they do. You left out Military Bands, who are the finest it the world. To those who love the all volunteer military and can't imagine it without stupid, expensive, and useless ads: join up, or get your kids to join up, or try to persuade a bunch of slacker teens in your town to join up. Put your time, energy, and money where your big mouths are. You'll find that legally once they have you there is no exit if they don't want to let you go. That three year hitch can be extended for 30 years if they want. Several federal judges have ruled that. Look it up if you don't believe me. Once you're in they have you for decades if they want. Me? I'm for bringing back the draft, since then we might not be so quick to put our troops in harm's way if millions of Americans decided their children's lives weren't worth making the oil companies even richer than they already are. BTW - Ads are worthless in selling a product. That's been true since the early 90s. All ads do is give the perception that the company paying for the ads is a player. Ads haven't gotten a decent return in almost 2 decades. Like it or not, that's marketing, folks.

Take the money you pay for advertising and pay the them better for what they do.

That sounds good in theory. The $80 million annually the article claims the military spends on sponsorships would amount to, if split up among the nearly 3 million active and reserve personnel, a pay raise of a little under $30 per year. That's an extra $2.50 per month. Hardly an effective recruiting tactic.

Military service is about a lot more than pay. The benefits follow you for your entire life, from education funding to civil hiring preferences and a hundred other things. That's not to mention the training and experience you receive while serving.

The stands are full with (as many of you would call them) "rednecks" and also many of them watch on TV. There are many of our southern boys that join the military as this is there way out of there towns. You would also be surprised how many city kids have started watching NASCAR through the years.

$ 8 million is a small amount when it comes to advertising a car even if for only part of the season, just think how much a primetime commercial costs or one during a large sporting event. Believe it or not NASCAR Cup racing is the largest spectator sport in the US.

Thats more like 25 cents per month because the article say 8.4 million, not 80 million. Which really makes the paying the troops more theory even more absurd.

I enjoy NASCAR. I used to be hardcore about it but about three years after Dale Sr. died I started getting soured by some of the BS. DEI and the number 8 fiasco, more fines for drivers being drivers and doing what guys do when their fired up. LOWES (or MADE IN CHINA) all in your face. FASTENAL (or MADE IN CHINA) all in your face, HOME DEPOT (or MADE IN CHINA), GOD THIS, GOD THAT, GOD, GOD, AND MORE GOD. It is more and more about the dollar.

Support your local track if you have one. Get out there under the lights on a Saturday night and take the family. Racing at its best. Regular Joe's, Hank's, and Tammies out there doing it for the love of racing. Not because of corporate instituted morality.

Patty....The Post Office ads support an effective, cheaper means to moving mail, packages, documents, etc. The repubs put a law in place to destroy the Post Office in order to privatize it. Privatizing will give more rich cats your money while raising rates and providing worse or even NO service to many areas across the United states. People all across the nation rely on the Postal service for their pension and Social Security checks. Repubs and sniveling people only care about themselves and not the big picture.

Many people are starving because of lost jobs and or low paying jobs because of the republicans crashing the economy. Many people do not know they may qualify for food stamps. The advertising alerts friends and relatives of this available source so that children and families do not starve.

As much as I like seeing Danica Patrick in any way or form, I would rather see a child having food on the table and being able to go to school, come home and have some kind of a meal that will keep the children and family healthy so they can recover from their situation.

The money spent on Army Nascar is betting off spent on the vets or families of vets.

Kid's today aren't interested in sports, per se.

Sports involves training and discipline. Mastering a skill set, and then competing against your peers. Sportsmanship. Teamwork. Character. Stuff like that.

Today's kids see an illiterate multi-millionaire felon paid to throw a ball around because he grew to a height of seven feet, and the kid decides that even though he's 5'6", that if he plays enough video games, buys a gold chain, wears $250 tennis shoes, and smokes enough pot, that he'll be able to do that some day.

So Vern is a racist, White old redneck who laments everday he sees a Black professional Basketball player being praised by America's youth, of all races? Nevermind that professional sports requires all of the qualities Vern mentioned like mastering a skill, and teamwork. Without that, none of the NBA teams would ever win championships. TRUE professional sports requires athleticism and physical prowess. NASCAR is not a sport anymore than fishing is, because it doesn't require teamwork, and certainly not athleticism. Shifting gears and steering a car is something ANYONE can learn to do. Not so with pro basketball. You either have the ability or you don't. A Chimpanzee could be trained to drive in the NASCAR circuit, with the right vehicle modifications. Try getting a Chimp to do a freethrow though.

What kind of dumbass enjoys watching cars drive around in circles anyway Vern?

            @ Julian in Dallas

You are woefully biased (racist?) in your little rant... and that's all it is, a little rant from an equally little mind. Most race car drivers are in better shape, train harder and are more intelligent than probably 95% of the NBA roster, who would probably wreck their Bentleys cruising back to the hood rather than attempt to train with someone like Mark Martin. I think Vern had a very spot-on comment and it had more to do with the values and ethics of kids these days rather than the racial slurring that you seem to have somehow read into it.

Tell an engine shop and the body and chassis shop that what they do doesn't require teamwork. Tell a pit crew that what they do doesn't require physical prowess. Tell a driver that he's just riding around for a couple of hours enjoying a nice Sunday cruise. You obviously don't know the first thing about any kind of racing, so why not STFU?

As far as your trained monkey analogy goes I think it's far easier to train a monkey to throw a ball through a hoop for a reward. I've been watching it for years ~ it's called the NBA.

For the record, in the past 100 years 6 Republicans and 4 Democrats had girlfriends while in the WH, while (as far as we know historically) 4 Dems and 4 Repubs didn't. And to be clear, O had nothing to do with this cutback. It is entirely the Pentagon's call, and you do know they're facing massive cutbacks in their wasteful, bloated budget, don't you? Why not begin with useless ads?

@ Julian in Dallas... you are clearly a bigoted, short sighted, imbecile. First of all, with the Military drawing down, the Standards for joining are going back up. They were lowered for the Surge in Iraq to meet the numbers and to increase the time between rotations for service members.

Now, that the draw down is happening all the felons and dirt bags alike are being asked to leave. Then they will go after the fat people because they will actually enforce the standards.

Third, saying in your earlier post that the Military is crawling with ignorant red Neck Dinosaurs is idiotic. First, the majority of recruits come from Urban areas, second, I've had Squad Leaders with multiple Masters Degrees, one with a PHD in Computer Engineering, and every commissioned officer HAS to have a Bachelors Degree and most Field Grades have a Masters degree or more.

I am not a fan of NASCAR or the NBA, but I'd bet that NASCAR has fewer Drivers with serious Character or Moral issues than the NBA.

I mean, if they were shopping for people based upon a diet consisting largely of their own boogers, washed down with copious amounts of watered-down supermarket beer, then NASCAR would be the thing. But I think the military is already over-represented by that demographic.

Glad to see this wasteful spending stopped.

You want recruits for the military??? Make it mandatory that everybody, (NO DEFERMENTS) and I mean everybody, give at least 2 years service to their country. Drop out of high school...ARMY! Single and pregnant with no daddy...ARMY! Gang Banger...ARMY! On Welfare...ARMY!(I'll brake the cycle) Graduate high school...Your choice of U.S. Military Service...(Depending on your brains)

For your 2 years of service, you will be given a NO COST LOAN for 2 years worth of college. Within 2 years after the program starts, everyone will be on the same page.

Let's start with ALL politicians and their kids.

Bet those freaks in DC would get the hell out of other countries in a big hurry. Hey Cheney, I guess your 5 deferments wouldn't save you if I had my way. Hey Mitt, how about your boys??? Oh you say they are worth $100 Million a piece so they can BUY their way out? Sorry it won't work that way, front lines for the 2 of them. You say they'll refuse to serve? OK, firing squad for anyone that refuses. Easy...DONE!!!

And yes I'm a Vet so I've already done my time...How about YOU???

6 months mandatory 17-19 upon leaving high school. (no benefits after leaving) Anyone signing for 2 or more years leaves the military with GI benefits (to be determined) Every graduate or 17-19 should be exposed to real disipline to be ready for the reality of the work force. This is "in states" boot camp. Certainly "Couldn't" Hurt!!!! No need to advertise... Choices made by individuals to join not have to listen to those who condem OUR military!!!

He could have signed up anytime, he could have not put in for deferment. Ol Mittster playing both sides again, flip flop.

Now his dad, George went over to see what the troops were really going through. He saw first hand the lies of the military generals about the war. George came home, said the truth, the generals are lying, and George helped to end the war.

The Mittster isn't half the man his dad was.

First of all, I tried to get in the military after high school but they couldn't take me as I had flat feet and they did not allow arch supports.

Second of all regarding benefits, my father went in after high school and served his term. Because he did not serve during wartime (was between Korean and Vietnam wars) he is not eligible for any VA benefits, not even the home loans. If the changed that requirement it was not retroactive. He voluteered Navy and is a proud supporter of the Navy and the other branches.

I do like the mandatory requirements of the Swiss military though.

I think we should require at least two years of government service for every kid prior to college. Why?

                        1. They will get a taste of the real world without mommy and poppy to pick up after them

                        2. They will mature to the degree that when they get to college (paid for in part by their service) they will knuckle down and study and not frat party away golden opportunities

                        3. Unemployment in the younger demographic groups will be reduced

                        4. If anyone noticed I mentioned "government service" so there are any number of service and infrastructure jobs besides military that would become available

                        5. They would understand freedom is not free

                        6. They would see first hand the waste in the government at all levels and become more educated voters.

There is not one damned thing wrong about paying your dues just like every one in Israel for example does. But I bet I will get all kinds of flack for this post - - bring it on!

As a former Marine I think all American boys and girls should be required by law to enlist immediately after graduating highschool, NO GEDs, and at least do basic training to teach them discipline and teamwork. After the initial service enlistment requirement is met, the choice should be given to go active duty for a mximum of 8 years, or reserve for a maximum of 12, and agree to be recalled to service if ever necessary.

Nothing pisses me off more than people who support wars and are eager to start them and send other peoples' children to die, but lack the spine to risk their own lives or their children's lives in them. Also the chickenhawk MEN who go around driving humvees with "Support Our Troops" decals, who have never had the balls to enlist or some handy little excuse why they didn't.

WSell i guess the next move wil be to stop all advertizing which means no more frill teams or air force blue angels etc. Those are all advertizing programs that don't necessarily speak to the age group either. Then when they get all that stopped they will want to start the draft again because they won't have any volunteers anymore. This advertizing while it seems like a lot of money it is spread out over a year. Other programs the military has spends that much in a day sometimes. What about the drones that they plan to start using to spy on US the US citizen that will cost billions and is illegal spying on the citizens of this country. Of course that is what Liberals are all about. That is what Obamacare is all about not healthcare but control of the population. Liberals are the most evil people on the Earth and are spawns of the devil and they do it all in the name of the greater good.

Little,,I'm going to have to stand in your court,,I think you hit the perverbial nail on the head.I've been reading all of these comments, and I was going to try and say something that would fit in,,and I just couldn't.To be perfectly honest,at this stage of my life,I just don't give a $hit.I did my time in the military,I spent my high school trip in Nam,I guess what I'm saying is,I'm at a point, that if I wake up and see the sun blinding me,,it's a good day,,as the say,,"Any day above ground is a good day",,,The way I see it,the government is going to spend our tax dollars, however they see fit,and if anyone is under the impression that they can change that, they're living in a dream world.

ihateliberals,I believe that the Blue Angels belong to the Navy, not the Air Force.I know,I live right behind their home base and watch them practice whenever they are home.As for them not having any effect on recruitment, just go to an air show when you get the chance.I see kids lined up,asking how can they get into a program like the Blue Angels. They are having a show on Pensacola beach this weekend and I guarentee there will be the same line to see them and wanting to apply to pilot training to attempt to get on the flight team.I know of a great deal of kids that have talked with the pilots and afterwards decided to knuckle down on their studies so that they can go to OCS and flight school. The Blue Angels do a lot for the military and their recruitment programs,as do the USAF Thunderbirds.

And here i thought I'd get to see a quarter mile 11 second Abrams Tank! Let's spend more taxpayers money on projects that serve nothing but wasted ideas. Come on, Army! What the heck are you thinking? That $80 million could be spent on better training.

Obama didn't have anything to do with it. REad the article

Don't you think military spending is better spent on what soldiers need, not labels on a car?
