According to the Washington Post, the officer allegedly said he would shoot the first lady and then pulled up a photo of a gun on his cell phone.

Officials familiar with what happen say that it was a bad joke made by someone who should have known better. The officer, who is represented by the police union, has retained a lawyer.

The union is going to represent their own, but this guy should never wear a badge again.

No police officer worthy of the badge makes a joke about shooting the First Lady of the United States of America. He must go. His judgment is clearly not up to par if he would make such a threat even in jest.

Too many police officers have earned a reputation for corruption and violence. We don't need another one. This is one man who should not be protected by his union.

"Reprimand" is for children..."fired" is for adults.

"You can say anything you want" ? Please ... make a joke about taking a bomb on a plane while at the airport. If someone hears you, you not flying that day or for a long time after that. Fines and jail time are real even if you think you were joking ... it's called a terroristic threat; same thing applies to threatening politicians or their families.

Seems pretty obvious to me that if someone says they will shoot someone then points out their phone they are joking about shooting a picture with that phone.

The police officer should be fired immediately and prosecuted for making a threat against the president's family. The only thing political about this story is that is occurred within the white house police/secret service department. that is it. But...and as always....it turns straight political and both sides starts to froth at the mouth trying to stomp their feet and threaten to "take their ball and go home" of others don't agree with their point of insanity.....er...view.

Fact: the officer made a comment. Got busted and then possibly tried to play it off as a joke. The picture of the gun could have been the "gun app" where you can play the sound of the gun firing with that specific gun (so for the lack of brain cell'd drone that said "if I showed a picture of the gun that I own and said..." the story said nothing about the picture being of a gun he owned...I feel dumber for actually reading your post) and he could have been "playing" with one of his officer buddies. As always many facts are left out.

Things this story does not state:
-race of the officer
-Race of the Lt (obviously his boss)
-Exact phrasing from the officer
-If the picture was an app, as I mentioned.
-Whether the officer was a republican or Dem or Ind

What could have happened:
-The LT Could have had it out for the officer for whatever reason
-The LT could have been left out of the joke, got his feelings hurt and turned him in
-The LT could be looking for his 2 minutes of fame

Really. A friend of mine had it on his IPhone a couple of years ago. It's a picture of a gun on hte phone and when you make the appropriate hand motion it sounds like a gun. So you can "shoot" things. Chi-chi Bang, chi-chi Bang... It's a gag and yes the cop should have known better, etc. but it was most likely not intended to be a serious threat. If it had been a serious threat he wouldn't have shown his phone, he would have unholstered his weapon.

Had this been anyone else who had threatened Mrs. Obama in an identical fashion, he/she would have been thrown in jail and subjected to hours and hours of interrogation by the Secret Service, at the very least. This police officer is on administrative leave because the threat is being investigated.....not because he's union. It's one officer's word about the other officer and they have to make sure that what he thought he heard is actually what was said and if the officer's words were really meant as a threat. Certain if this is true it's nothing to joke about and he should have known better but really let the facts come out before making judgment.

It's not just that this cop knows "insiders in the beltway." It's that pretty much all cops are allowed to get away with at least threatening to murder, and in many cases, full-on murder. They're held to much lower standards of decency than the general population. Yes, they're expected to behave as well as the rest of us, but they're not punished as severely (if at all) as the rest of us when they don't.

Whats amazing is that the GOP have exhibited really bad behavior since obama elected and have literally decided to 'BREAK LAW' or not abide by it: hence health care implementation,voter obstruction ect. So which account is true? The report someone dug up from a 2nd party source (Washington Post) or what the D.C. Chief of Police says, seeing as how she has direct access to all involved.

I think the article said it all. The guy made a joke in bad taste and has some minor consequences as a result. Reassignment to something away from what he was doing is an appropriate response given the situation. Everyone screaming for the officer's immediate termination or exhonoration are making a mountain out of a molehill.

I have a few friends in law enforcement and can tell you that cops tend to have a dark sense of humor; seems to come with the job. That doesn't excuse what this particular officer said, but it's hardly a "hangin' offense" either.

The officer's race has nothing to do with this matter. The duties, contduct and loyalty of this officer are called into question. If that is what he said, then I would say he clearly violated all 3 areas. Hence he would be subject to a disciplinary hearing or comittee.

How many of you actually live in the DC/MD/VA area? This story was on the news Thursday night/Early Friday morning. The officer said he did not care about being late for roll call and that he would like to shoot that *bleep* in the head. He then took out his phone and showed others pictures of a gun that he said that he owned and would do it with. We in this area talked about it for about half a day and have since gone on our way and are letting the Secret Service and MDCP handle it.

I remember an America where I could say anything I wanted, at any time, in any place and to anybody without getting arrested or labeled a terrorist. While I agree with the need for proper grammar, to say that, "calling this a "typo" is a transparent excuse" is simply absurd. The fact is that any line editor, the individual to whom the typo is being attributed, reads through thousands of lines of text a day. Sit down for a day and do nothing but type out stories and then go back through at the end of the day and see how many mistakes like this you make; I assure you there will be plenty.

The fact is that a typo can include not only simple mistakes like transposing letters (typing "on" instead of "no") but can also include mistakenly using the wrong variation of a word due to how quickly you are working (using "break" instead of "brake"). Yes it is a mistake. Yes it should be corrected; however it is not some indication of a lack of education or professionalism. Get off of your high horse and accept that mistakes simply happen from time to time.

Barbara Bush was at least willing to not always "toe the party line" of the right, most notably on the abortion issue. Other than raising the President who has done the most to run this country into the ground, both morally and fiscally, what has she done that you find so offensive?

While this article (unfortunately, like too many article post here) does not give all the facts and detail. Making a threat againist the First Lady is a serious thing -- but if the police and the secret Service are not tooo concerned -- i guess they is more to this story than related here -- I have a broader poin tot make -- This story is just another example of what has happen to "public discourse" in this country overe the last several year --especially since Obama was elected. I am sure it is not just the "Tes party" -- but they increasing seem to be the main soyrce of this behavior most recently. Seems that more and more people think they have the right to disrespect the President of the United Stetated -- for whatever reason they have in their own little minds -- Remarks like this were rare a decade or so ago. No one yelled out insults in the U.S. Congress @ the President during his "State of the Union" address before -- No one "floated' absorb nonsense about another person's race, place of birth or background (at least not since the 1800's when people actually fought duets over stuff like this -- jus a little history lesson for you kids!) As other have so corectly pointed out -- there was a time, not too long ago when any kind of remark like the one this DC police officer is accused of making would have lamded that person in jail, period. yes, maybe it was a dumb joke amd those around him realize he is really no threat --but by the same token - he really is MORE of a threat -- since he could in fact carry out such a threat (even more so than any other fool talking out his butt hole). He would have means and opportunity -- in fact carries a weapon and could get close enough to his target. You can bame the economy or FOX News and their right-wing, half-trith and free speak -- but the bottom line is this country is going in the wrong direction when words and deeds like this are becoming more frequent.
