Family fulfills dying man's wish: $500 tip for waitress

Friends and family give random waitress $500 tip to satisfy man's dying wish. WLEX's Adam Yosim reports.

A Kentucky man's family fulfilled his dying wish when they left a $500 tip to their waitress at a Lexington restaurant a few days after he died, the NBC station WLEX in Lexington. And that wish has turned into something bigger.

Before he died July 7, 30-year-old Aaron Collins told his family he wanted to eat pizza and leave the server a large tip, but didn't have the money, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported

His family raised the money through a website that Collins' brother Seth started

Days later, they went to have lunch at a pizza parlor and handed the waitress the $500 when they were done, the paper reported.

The event was captured on video and is posted on the family's website.

The waitress can be heard saying, "Are you kidding me?"

According to the website, more than $10,000 has been donated since Thursday.

Collins' family said they plan on raising more money and giving out big tips weekly to other servers as long as they can.

The newspaper report did not say what Collins died of.

I hope it goes on indefinitely as well.

I still don't want to be a server, however.

I applaud the generosity. I just hope they don't videotape them all and post them on the "family website". At some point it becomes self-serving..... (i.e. Oprah... "Everyone see how generous I am!")

What a terrific idea to come from such a tragedy! I hope they are able to pay it forward for dozens of future waiters/waitresses. His family has a true reason to be proud of their son/brother!

Something tells me this is going to be used to the family's advantage. I mean, it's one thing to give a server (waiter, waitress, doesn't matter) a big tip, it's quite another to video record the whole thing and put it up on your website. Let the server cherish what has happened, there shouldn't be any attention given to that family. I wonder if they're hard up for money or something, or want a book deal.

thevaliantx123, Don't you think that maybe he just wanted to film the reaction so that he'd have the opportunity to share it with those who had donated to the cause? I know that's what I'd do. I think it'd be nice to show people what their generousness has brought.

Don't forget that this is a family that has just lost someone, and are simply trying to fulfill his final wish.

M.French your statement could be describing Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Barry O... the former two have extensive off shore accounts and were investors in Bain. As President Barry has made millions from patronage and since Harry is his mentor and along with G. Soros (also with major off shore accounts) he'll soon learn how to his his 'hard earned' money as well! I just love the hiprocisy of the left and yes:

I think this is a heartfelt story of a dying wish by an old man and resulted in a gracious act by his family to make this happen. I don't wish to disrespect that, but my warning to those donating to these on-line 'make a wish' stories to the total tune of thousands (or in the case of the 'School bus lady' being bullied that raised nearly a million dollars and free vacations, etc. Be careful. These will propagate multiple scams out there that could be set up by... a bunch of meth-heads. I mean really... How do you know? School bus lady could have been one of the first and most successful... How do you now? You think these on-line 'journalists' verify any content they throw up here? Guess again. Send your money where you want but be certain it is going where you think it is.

What a wonderful thing to do. Most people have no idea how hard it is to be a waitress. These are some of the hardest working people who make the least amount of money. Most people don't know wait staff usually makes half minimum wage or less and rely on tips to make up the rest. This guy couldn't have picked a better way to give to those that truly need. It also makes for the best surprise reactions. Wait staff are under appreciated and usually get bad tips if at all, depending on where they work. I have seen this as a cook in many restaurants over the last 20 years. I know it's a job I wouldn't want to do...

If they really wanted to help someone (but then, it wouldn't make for as newsworthy a video), they could have split that $500 amongst five servers.

Okay, but don't forget those hardworking, but often forgotten hotel room attendants! Man, what a thankless job most of the time. Everyone always focuses on the servers, but forget all the other behind the scenes people that help them do their job properly.

You are right. Most behind the scenes workers rarely if ever get acknowledgement for their hard work. I too make sure that I thank or tip the hardest working people who help with the services I receive. Just because they are only doing their job, doesn't mean they don't deserve to be appreciated for it. One small acknowledgement for those people can make their entire work week seem brighter and a little less stressful.

Tips are taxable income. Most tipped employees are required to report their tips to their employer so that FICA taxes are paid by the employer, as well as the employee.

                #12.1 - Fri Jul 13, 2012 6:30 PM EDT

I don't think the IRS will bother her for a share of the 500 bucks. Most tips today are paid by card, and are taxed by the government.

Awesome thing to do...Servers have to deal with a lot of crap, and have to make up the 0-10% tips while keeping a smile on their face.

I tip a minimum of 20%, then round up, then add $1-2. My bills are only $15-$40, so it usually ends up being 25-35%.
