City councilwoman charged with battery of former colleague -- her ex-lover

The San Fernando, Calif., councilwoman at the center of an affair scandal with a council colleague was charged Friday with vandalism and battery of her former lover during a breakup last month, according to a misdemeanor complaint filed by the LA County District Attorney’s office.

Maribel De La Torre allegedly attacked Mario Hernandez, with whom she served on the San Fernando City Council, and destroyed his laptop and a picture frame during a June 28 incident, according to the complaint.

De La Torre, 41, and Hernandez, 47, took out restraining orders against each other after the incident and were ordered to stay 100 feet apart.

San Fernando City Council members and residents have criticized the pair for letting their personal lives invade City Hall and have demanded their resignations.

Hernandez – who announced the couple’s relationship during a city council meeting last fall with his wife in the audience – stepped down from his post Tuesday, hours before the council was set to meet.

"I want to apologize to the community for the inconveniences caused by my personal life," Hernandez said in a statement at the time.

Hernandez, De La Torre and Mayor Brenda Esqueda – accused of having a relationship with a police official while voting on police matters – face a recall election in the fall.

San Fernando Mayor Pro Tem Antonio Lopez said Tuesday that the pair has caused "enough damage" and it was time for the city of 23,000 to get its government in order.

WOW, I was wondering why this was even a story, and then you find out the guy announces his affair at a public meeting with his wife in the audience. Nice guy.

And to top it off, you have a female mayor, who also could not keep her personal life out of her office.

Are they putting pheromones in the water?

They don't call them "City Council" meetings anymore, they call them "Bunga Bunga" parties.

Whoever said sex and politics don't mix?

Hey Meg,

I'm not sure how the council has actually functioned since this story is more about how the people on it have led soap opera lives, but I kind of think this is more routine in politics than we would like to imagine, just as it is in life outside of politics. I think we are in the mess we are not because politicians are screwing one another, but because we allow (want?) them to screw us, over, and over, and over again, and we still keep electing them.

BTW, de la Torre looks pretty damn hot, but the story doesn't mention any of her non-city council life. Was she married too? Is Hernandez the only one on the council she was banging? I'm thinking San Fernando, porn movie industry...she might have been auditioning.

    #2.3 - Sun Jul 15, 2012 10:32 AM EDT

Dang, I should've checked the veracity of that photo before saying she looked hot. If that is a photo of Maribel de la Torre it was taken a long time ago. I wouldn't say she is fugly now, but she has no chance in the film industry like I imagined!

Yes, why is it a news? People break up all the time (and break a few things during break ups, sometime). But as long as she didn't break the restraining order, what law did she break that she has to resign? That the guy had a wife tells on his lapse. Did she have a husband when she had the affair with the married guy? Why are politicians made to look like saints by the law, while all they do is lie, deceive and take digs at each other?

Both sides make things up, and it's not new. I don't even think it is bad as it once was, like when the nation was just a baby. But that doesn't mean we should accept it and reward it. The bigger problem with all the made up garbage today, like the lies about Romney favoring outsourcing or of liking to fire people, is that it moves so much faster than before, so fast in fact that there is no way to keep up with all the untruths.

Churchill said it...A lie is halfway around the world before the truth even gets its shoes on. And that was without the internet. We had better try to find a way to get a handle on this if we want to keep the country together for the long term. The way it was done, more or less, before was to have just a few news organizations doing the filtering for us. That didn't work too well since it helped give us modern liberalism. My solution is to have the government do far less, and push most of what they do down to the next lower political subdivision. That way people like de la Torre and Hernandez can screw one another all day long at it just won't make a difference to the lives of their constituents.

            Military Members, Veterans, Military retirees;

please note that Swiss Bank account Romney PROMOTED THE DRAFT during the Viet Nam War,

then skipped out to France for extraordinary length of time when church missionary tours were limited.

When Romney came home, he sided with his dad that the whole Viet Nam War was a scam and that he was against the war.

Promoting the draft, while Americans were dying, he skipped out, then says he wishes he could have participated. His whole life has been a lie.

Romney is a COWARD, Lying, Draft Dodger, who promoted someone else to die for him, that is his way of management.

Some may want anyone but Obama, but this guy ranks with Jane Fonda and should not be given anything or elected for anything.

For those who are not old enough to remember the military draft, it was a mandatory commitment for two years that was implemented during the Viet Nam War. If your number was called, you went and served like it or not. Young people may say, I wouldn't go and they can't make me, think again.

This is what Romney promoted as if he were a "responsible citizen", then he left his fellow citizens to serve and some died for us and him. I am ashamed of him as I am retired military member, and forget about representing our country Mr. Romney.

I am one of the Military members who are against Romney, this has nothing to do with politics

After returning from his missionary duty in France, he attended school with the same deferment everyone else in school got. Then, this part you will love Bob....his draft number was 300, which meant that the POPE would probably go before he did. I can't find anywhere that he returned and was against the draft.
