Authorities find two bodies, arrest suspect in search for missing Mo. sisters

Ashley Key and Britny Haarup were last seen Friday morning.

Updated at 4:50 a.m. ET: Authorities reportedly found the bodies of two women in a rural field in western Missouri on Sunday evening after interrogating a suspect over the disappearance of a young mother and her sister.

The Platte County sheriff's office said it could not immediately confirm the identities or causes of deaths of the women discovered near Trimble, Mo., which is about 30 miles from Kansas City, Mo., the Kansas City Star reported.

"We have one individual in custody and we believe that person accounts for all the individuals involved in the sisters' disappearance," the Star quoted Capt. Erik Holland of the sheriff’s office as saying.

Infant daughters left at home
Britny Haarup, 19, and her sister Ashley Key, 22, have been missing since Friday, when Haarup’s fiancé, Matt Meyers, found her two infant daughters alone at her home.

The sisters also left behind their purses and a cellphone, NBC affiliate KSDK-St. Louis reported. A comforter soaked in blood was also found in the home, and relatives said guns were missing from the dwelling, the Star reported.

The women found in the field were Caucasian, Holland told the Star. "We can say we were led here based on information from a suspect in the disappearance of Britny Haarup and Ashley Key."

"That individual is under arrest and in custody," the newspaper quoted Holland as saying.

"We all had held out hope,” Cassie Meyers, Matt Meyers' sister-in-law, told the Star after the bodies were found. "We were hoping they'd just show up OK, or that they'd call someone. … With this news, even if it isn’t yet confirmed, the hope’s not there."

Earlier, relatives said one of the women had been running with a "bad crowd," KSDK reported.

Britny Haarup "would never go off and leave her children," KSDK quoted Paul Haarup, Britny and Ashley's father, as saying. "So knowing the children were alone, there was something wrong."

The relationship between the suspect in custody and the sisters remained unclear.

NBC News affiliate KSDK contributed to this report.

"Haarup’s finance said he found" Who writes this stuff? Isn't it possible to find someone who can actually use correct grammar? There's a lot of people out of work who'd love to do a better job than this and I'd love to see a more professional news station. You can't read an article on MSNBC without coming across half a dozen punctuation, spelling or grammar errors, and usually the headlines are so misleading you want to throw something at the screen half way into the article.

Return home safely?! They're dead dude. I think you're referring to the two missing cousins. Wrong article man.

Nanahearn - did you see anything other than gramamtical errors in this article? Did you see the relevant details about the two missing women who have been found dead. What about the two babies who no longer have a mother?

What two babies don't have a mother? This article doesn't confirm that the bodies were related to the babies. They haven't found the two missing women - they have found two Caucasian female bodies in a field.

As for the grammatical correctness, proofreading etc of the article - it is literally outsourced to third world countries for writing and then electronically transmitted for publication.

Sorry, all you nay-sayers. I, for one, DO care about correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. I find it very distracting to read over these kinds of errors. Didn't you learn anything in school? You stick this kind of junk on a resume, and then wonder why you weren't called in for an interview?

It's the little things. They add up.

Then send in your resume to the paper and get a job with them. Correct spelling, I agree with and grammar to a point 99 percent of the time. However, there is a point where you are being just plain bitchy about it. Everyone understood what was meant. It's not as if the sentence was so illogical no one could have made any sense of it. Did you bother to get anything from the article itself or did you do nothing but proofread? Just apply for a job as a proofreader!! I think you missed the big issue here. We are not discussing grammar on this page normally unless it is so bad it sticks out to the point where it should have never been put in print. That is not the case here. Pick your articles for griping more carefully.

Those of you who do not understand the importance of using correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc., are missing the point. A society can't function well if its citizens can't read and write. Period. Unfortunately, the fact that our society is becoming more uneducated and ignorant coincides with the fact that we are losing our position as a world power. Ever think of it that way? What is even more pathetic than our decline in the ability to read and write is that so many of you don't have enough pride or care to read and write correctly. Shoddy workmanship, shoddy product, declining sales, etc.

Part of the problem with grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors is that the people who are writing these things are doing it in a 24 hour news cycle that is very competitive. They have to get their stories up as fast as they possibly can, and this doesn't always allow for extensive copy editing. You often find that after the stories have been initially posted that the errors will be corrected in a later version. Also, they are often updating the exact same copy and inserting information, which leads to errors of duplication, or occasionally a lack of consistency in the narrative. If you don't like these kinds of errors you really ought to stick to newspapers, where there is extensive editing, revision, etc. before the paper goes to print. I am not saying that you shouldn't expect the same level of excellence in writing online, only that if you do expect it you will be constantly disappointed. Journalists are expected to put things up as soon as they have information so that they don't get "scooped" by another news agency. The pressure to be first is enormous, and they sacrifice something for it. I think the hope is that people will care more about the story being told then they will about a couple errors.

Wow, those of you who are so concerned about grammar are frankly sad and a bit scary. Life is messy and imperfect and you guys must live in a constant state of annoyance -- your neighbor doesn't cut his lawn, someone isn't driving to your liking, your soup is too cold, a kid is too loud, etc. You're literally poisoning your life with your focus on imperfections. I hope you didn't have kids 'cause I expect they never lived up to your expectations. It is scary too, because it means that you want to control everyone else by laying your values over them. I would suggest that you stop to smell the roses more often, but I suspect you'd just complain about thorns or bees ...

      #1.16 - Mon Jul 16, 2012 3:28 PM EDT

For the grammatical naysayers, let me point out that we are all imperfect. However, many of us make the effort to improve ourselves. I value good communication skills. I appreciate those who try to convey their thoughts and ideas in a succinct manner. Yes, being first with a news story is important; however, it's just as important to get as many details correct as possible. I do get annoyed at the laziness I've seen regarding simple errors, and a quick proofread would correct most. That being said, I see no evidence of any proofread, and that is the bone of contention. It used to be that journalists were very well schooled in grammar. Unfortunately, these days, I see very little of it.

        #1.18 - Mon Jul 16, 2012 4:51 PM EDT

Actually, larrym, it still would matter. When my niece was murdered back in 1991, one newspaper reported that a man and his SON were found in Big Bend Natl Park. They also reported that "his" name was Austin. SHE was my niece, Boston, and it DID matter to my sister that they didn't fact check and put the right information. Grammar, spelling, facts...ALL should be checked before publication. It does matter.

@tess8629: Yes, some people never get the salient parts of anything they read. They sail right over them. They will get a check for a $1M and bitch about the signature on the check or the style of print on the paper. The amount of the check will go unnoticed. They live among us! They dwell on the petty things in life and bypass the good things. God, wouldn't you hate to live or work with one of them? There is a time to be casual and a time to be formal. The key is to distinguish the two.

restless - I consider it disrespectful, on the writer's and editor's part, to the victims and their families to not care enough about the story to get it right, both grammatically and factually. This is an article, not a blog, and therefore should be held to a higher standard.

It was a friggin typo that was not caught!!! Can't you people just get over this? Try aiming your thoughts at the content of the article and forgetting the grammar. You know, the fact that two people were killed!!! Stick to the important issue at hand and leave the secondary crapola in this case for another day. Some of you people must have a hard time deciding whether to have coffee or tea in the morning. It must be a decision of monumental proportions depending on the style of type on the boxes!

OK - Nanahearn, I think that you are several bricks short of a load for 2 reasons: (1) you are seriously missing the point of the article and (2) there is nothing grammatically incorrect about the statement that you refer to - Oh, and by the way, one could argue that your use of the word 'stuff' is poor grammar - Perhaps you could use a few lessons in grammar before you open your large yap

Furducken - the grammar is fine, but the spelling needs to be corrected. I sometimes find it difficult to decipher an article when words are not speled correctly, and when the misspelled word is the correct spelling of another word, spellcheck doesn't always find it.

See, everyone makes mistakes. When you are typing casually, sometimes you just don't proofread, or you just type and want to send so fast, you read it, but read over it, and don't catch the mistakes. Even the people complaining and complaining and complaining about grammar and spelling make mistakes (even though they would cut their throat before they would admit it).

This is beyond horrible that there are two young girls that are gone to the otherside of the curtain and left behind are two more babies without their mother to raise them.

The same thing ought to happen to their killer without a trial because these girls didn't have a trial they are gone because someone decided to kill them just like that and didn't even think twice.

We live in a cynical world these days and if you are a young adult, make wise choices in your friends, your future depends on it. I think it's safe to say that the writing is pretty accurate when it reports two young women as dead. We, at least, know that much.

I think the accurate details of their deaths would be more important to the police and detectives covering the case. They will be the ones deciding who gets charged with their deaths and what happens afterwards.

You can bet that meth or other drugs are likely involved in this somehow. Hey, it's Missouri (or as we sometimes call it here...Misery)! Lots of hillbillies and white trash here. Ive been to towns and met people in this State that are barely one step up from the movie Deliverance , some even worse.

Yes, Joe Peters. That is exactly what we are like in Missouri. Toothless, hillbilly wonders who love the meth. Please take your blinders off before you get behind the wheel of a vehicle. What an uneducated, obtuse individual. God bless their families.

Joe Peters.....................you sound like someone who needs a Deliverance experience. I bet you know how to squeal like a pig.

Really, Joe P.? Where, exactly, have you been in Missouri? I'm from Missouri and I haven't seen any "hillbillies" here. "White trash" can be found everywhere in the USA, especially if you hang out with them, which I suspect you do, since you know so much about them.

BTW - "Deliverance" was a movie filmed in Georgia/North Carolina.

Let's see- the fiance found two infants at home, mothers were missing, cell phones & purses still there, truck missing, guns missing, blood soaked comforter... two female caucasian bodies found and suspect in custody. Open & shut goes the case.

If this person in custody did this, take them to the nearest Zoo and throw them in the Lions den and wish them luck.

Who gives a rats ass about grammar, punctuation and whatever your bitching about. These two beautiful young women are dead. Focus on the story, not the grammar, punctuation, etc. To the family of these two beautiful women, I am so sorry for your loss.

I never can really understand why people keep coming here and reading the articles and constantly complain about the grammar or the "misleading" titles. The obvious solution would be to stop coming here and reading the articles.

I think the point is the level of education of the writers and the lack of editorial review prior to posting. Writers should know the difference between your and you're.

You shouldn't have capitalized the second "focus." Sorry...
