Father of slain lesbian teen in Texas: Shooter is 'monster'

The father of a slain 19-year-old Texas woman speaks after authorities released a new composite of the suspect. KRIS-TV reports.

The father of a teenager who died after being shot in the head along with her girlfriend in a Texas park called their attacker a “monster” after seeing the most recent sketch of the suspect released over the weekend, local media reported.

Mary Kristene Chapa worked with a forensic artist from the Texas Rangers on Friday to update the drawing of the man who attacked her and Mollie Judith Olgin on June 22 in Portland, Texas. An earlier sketch she made with the artist was released July 4.

When asked what came to his mind when he saw the sketch, Olgin’s father, Mario, told local NBC News affiliate kristv.com: "I think monster, you know. That guy took my daughter away from us."

The night they were shot, Chapa, 18, and Olgin, 19, had planned to spend some time in the park before seeing a movie, Olgin’s father, Mario, previously told local television station kiiitv.com.

They were found by a couple the next day in a grassy area of the park with gunshot wounds to the head. Olgin, a first-year university student living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was alive and rushed to an area hospital.

NBC Latino reported Monday that Chapa had left the hospital and entered neurological rehabilitation as well as physical and mental therapy.

Her brother, Hilario Chapa, said they have now informed her of Olgin’s death.

“She didn’t know about Mollie for the longest time, but we finally decided to tell her,” he told NBC Latino, noting that the Olgin family and authorities were present to help break the news. “With that support group we passed the info to my little sister. She was brokenhearted, very upset.”

Police recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the pair was found. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight on June 22 but did not report it at the time.

Wright has previously said that there was no evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by the couple’s relationship. On Monday, he said no motive had yet been established.

"The new sketch has generated new calls from around the country. We are continuing to interview potential witnesses and processing evidence for forensic examination," he told msnbc.com in an email, adding that he had no new developments to report.

The FBI was also helping to investigate, and Chapa was working with authorities to reconstruct the crime scene, Wright said.

The suspect is described as a thin white man with a scruffy beard, in his 20s, weighing 140 pounds and standing 5-feet-8-inches tall.

"When I think about her last 15, 20, 30 minutes on Earth," Olgin told kristv.com, "how scared both girls had to be whenever they were approached by this monster."

He urged anyone with information to come forward.

"It's been over three weeks now and the longer it carries on, the harder it's gonna be," he said.

I realize the media is basically a pack of vultures and can't help but pick at the juicy bits of a gruesome story until there's nothing left, but really, can they be just human enough to focus on the tragedy and not on the girls very personal sexual orientation?? In every single article it's always LESBIAN TEENS, instead of just teens, it's tragic enough without trying to throw an insensitive twist on it.

THIS STORY IS ALSO ABOUT THEM BEING KILLED BECAUSE THEY WERE GAY.

Or it could be that they're trying to turn it into a hate crime where there is no evidence of a hate crime. After all, this is part of the same fine media outlet that edited tapes to make another suspect look like a racist.

Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes. MSNBC wants hate crimes to stir up ratings and will twist facts and edit media to do just that. At the same time they don't give a damn about the damage it costs on the streets between relations among people like you and I.

I agree that the media focus on their sexual orientation is premature. At this time, all we know is that they were shot. There is no evidence that it is because they were gay. It could just as easily be because they were an interracial couple.

If it turns out that it was a hate crime, it should definitely be prosecuted as such. Until then, it is best not to jump to conclusions. We are talking about Texas, so it would be a shame if the gay population started toting guns on the assumption that some nut is out there targeting them.

I agree with the father's assessment. This is a monster. Whatever his motivation, he is a monster. I would bet it is a hate crime, but that isn't definite until it's definite.

I don't see why gay people shouldn't "tote guns" if so many others are...but then I wish no one did. Anyway, I hope they catch this monster soon and no one else is hurt.

This article wouldn't even be in the new if the Media were not allowed to attach Lesbian to the headline. Maybe it is the Media that needs regulated. As of late, it is more "opinion news" and "sensationalist yellow journalism" than anything else.

We can only speculate that it was a hate crime, there is still no evidence to conclude that these two poor teens weren't just in the wrong place at the wrong time or that it was because of their sexual orientation. Regardless of their taste in partners, no one deserves that. I wish the news media wouldn't twist things the way they do either but that's how they get the stories read. I hope they find the person that did this and he gets what's coming to him.

    #1.12 - Mon Jul 16, 2012 5:35 PM EDT

If the victims were a male couple, I could see it as a hate crime. But I can't see any man killing two teenage lesbians because he was so grossed out by their affection for one another.

I'm glad that the survivor of the attack was able to at least give a description. Pity they didn't know the guy personally. If she did, the brain damage might have caused her to forget.

However, I now get the feeling that this crime was not personally motivated, but rather is a pathologically motivated crime. This man might become a serial killer.

Jeff, I don't think anything Shan said was bigoted.... she was making an assumption about Texas. Hate crimes happen all over the country, but the statement regarding Texas being known for racially and sexually biased is true, no matter who from Texas disputes it. The fact that the State constitution bans same-sex marriage and some or all other kinds of same-sex unions obviously shows that the people who vote and live there are against homosexuals, does it not?

bigpicture, it is bigoted. Based on her own logic she described a population of people based on no evidence or facts. All states have laws banning polygamy, does that mean all people in all states are against polygamists?

Just because you agree with her statement doesn't make it less bigoted.

    Shan,

We are one of the most populous states, so "the most" shouldn't surprise anyone.

I happen to enjoy my firearms, but I'm neither christian nor gay-hatin', nor NRA. Have lots of gay friends who I love just as much or more than my straight friends. Just hate haters.

Some of us keep firearms just because we want to protect our families from sickos like the one that took of these beautiful human being's life, and likely permanently injured another.

One day when you have your own children, you might think about how you're going to protect them when some child predator or killer stalks you and your family. You'll likely rethink your anti-firearm philosophy.

    Just sayin'.

Oh, and I suppose TX mom isn't biased? There is a huge difference between homosexuality and polygamy, so don't compare the two. Texas has long seperated itself from other states with their opinion on homosexuality to the point of banning anal sex all together - so if you want to sit there and tell me you don't think that politics of the state don't play a roll in how its citizens learn and then act, go ahead, it doesn't make the truth less valid nor does it mean I am stating the reason this man killed this girl is because she was a lesbian.

    The Bigpicture....

Oh, and I suppose TX mom isn't biased? There is a huge difference between homosexuality and polygamy, so don't compare the two.

Exactly what bias? I didn't say anything about polygamy. I simply suggested that you consider the FACT that Houston's Mayor, Annise Parker, is a lesbian. She is in her second term as Mayor of Houston and has done a pretty good job, head and shoulders above Bill White her predecessor, in dealing with the business of one of the Biggest cities in the country.

Silly silly bigpicture....your own bias rant seems to be shinning through any attempt at reason. Here are the facts as we know them....Two young women were heading to the movies and chose to stop at a secluded location before heading on to the movies. They were both shot at the location by an unknown man. One young woman lost her life and the other survived in critical condition. Fortunately, she has recovered to the point where she is able to leave the hospital and continue to heal through rehab. She is a brave young woman who was able to offer enough information to create a sketch of the sorry bastard that shot her and her friend. Now we also know that these young women were not just friends but they shared an intimate relationship, which from the surviving victims point of view will make surviving that horrible ordeal difficult to reconcile in her own recovery.

Now what we do know is that the SOB who committed this crime will probably face the death penalty. If it is proved to be a hate crime related to the sexuality of the young women then he can be subject to the James Bird II hate crime legislation, he can still face the death penalty.

My hope is that they catch this man so that he can face justice and will never have the opportunity to harm another human being in my state or any other.

skrekk....If you bothered to check you would find that there are many other states that house a much higher concentration of Southern Baptists than Texas. But then I doubt you care much about accuracy of information.

JJ I'm with you I have guns and would not hesitate to use one to protect my family. I don't hate anyone from the GLBT community...well except for folks like Jeffery Dahlmer, John Wayne Gacey or Henery Lee Lucas...I know some great people who are part of the GLBT community and have a deep respect for many of them because well they are people with other facets to their lives that make them interesting.

I hate Texas.. I got my arse kicked there twice, just for being who I am. I don't know about all Texans (I grew up in TX and was loyal to TX for a while), but the one's I met THOSE nights; were bigoted rednecks. As was the police officer who "took my statement".... I won't elaborate; but his disgust with me (transgender, in a dress and makeup) was MORE than obvious. I was informed that they would most likely "never find these 'suspects'."

I have reason to hate Texas... yet; all of my family lives in either Texas or Oklahoma... so I guess.. there are still a FEW Texans I can find space for in my heart.

I was responding to both people who responded to me so the Pologamy comment had nothing to do with you. I am not ranting, it just seems to me that a lot of Texans (yourself) jump to the states defense (as they should I suppose) with an equal bias as those who make statements who don't live there regarding the people who do. If you read my entire comment, I specifically said my opnion on texas may not directly relate to this case. Time will tell, but there is no need to call me silly.

Although I do not go along with same sex unions nor do I understand homosexuality as I am very HETRO , I dont think anyone has the right to kill someone because they are gay. As long as gay people do not try to get in your face with it lets live and let live.

I hope they catch him quiick also. Then of course after he is caught we have to hear about his upbringing, he was abused, mistreated. Who really gives a crap. He had no right to take this life, no matter what his motive was. As far as his rights, they were cancelled the moment he took a life. Thiss clown is an animal. If he was amad dog, we would waste no time in shooting it. Well as far as I'm concerned he's not even close to being a mad dog. I say catch him, notify his relatives they have a week to get ready for his funeral. Give him his " speedy trial", then shoot him just like he ssot them. Society better wake up it's only going to get worse.

Not a reason to kill but it is a reason - face it - get your heads out of the sand - it's the media who keep telling kids it's OK to be Gay and half of them fall for it when they really are not gay - just trying it out - If the schools and media would quit pushing gays and lesbians on us - it would be a lot better for everyone. Gays have more rights than straight kids in the schools now - This is a sad example of what can happen to kids who come out and tout their gay life style - that they chose.

I grew up as a teenager in the 1980s - when AIDS was killing people every single day, dozens, even hundreds. I was born in the 70s and was always gay. The media, if anything, would have convinced me *not* to be gay or "try it out." Yet every person I've loved in my life has been another man (or when I was a teenager, another boy my age). I grew up LDS (Mormon) and gay. I have always been gay and always will be, and I'm happy with that. No one can make anyone else a certain sexuality or love someone against their will. Media *may* influence young people to behave in certain ways and experiment, and so what? It's not hurtful to experiment with being heterosexual (which I did long after I knew I was gay and wanted to know about women for the fun of it - and the women knew) any more than someone experimenting with someone of the same sex. Obviously, safety is an issue no matter our sexuality. Other than that, no harm no foul.

The media keep saying they were lesbians because they were - it's makes their ratings go up. Howevever, Maybe it was a factor in the murder. Most people don't like gays and lesbians and the schools keep pushing this lifestyle on the kids and telling them it's OK when it isn't. These two girls chose to go public with their chosen lifestyle. Kids this age are still trying things out and if the schools tell them it's OK - they try it when most of them are not even gay. The schools should keep out of teens sex lives and things like this would not happen. Maybe it was because they were lesbians and maybe not - guess we won't know till the guy is caught. If these were my kids - I would be ashamed to admit they were lesbians. Blame the schools for telling young, vulnerable, impressionable teens that to be gay is OK.

Quote a source for that comment, if you can find one. You have made a number of remarks with nothing to back them up. Also, calling this "their chosen lifestyle" again shows that you have no real understanding of homosexuality. Did you choose to be straight? Or perhaps you are so insecure in your own sexuality that that you must attack gays and lesbians.

So, meeche, when did you "choose" to live the "heterosexual lifestyle"?

We live in a world filled with people that deserve to die. This beautiful girl was not one of them.

meeche, are you as uneducated as you appear? I'm not gay, but I'd rather be gay than be as idiotic as you. As a parent, my heart goes out to the families of these girls.

does anyone know the sexual orientation of the dead lesbian's father? this info is vital as the killer could be charged with a 2nd degree of separation hate crime.

How would you know - were you there? I'm also a vet, but I don't use it as a crutch in my username. What are you looking for lots of "wow thanks for the service" replies? Get over it.

Really? the father of someone who was murdered doesn't like the killer? what a suprise!...this isn't news, stop milking old stories for all they are worth....and stop focusing so much on the potentially irrelivent fact that she was a lesbian.

Keeping it in the press puts pressure on the suspect and keeps his photo in people's minds. Nothing wrong with that.

I agree victory. What would the father say "Hum, I was thinking he was a monster, but now that i've seen the sketch, he's kinda handsome. Maybe my other daughter will go on a date with him? I hope so, he looks like a keeper to me"

She was only 19 years old and had her whole life in front of her. Just can't understand people - nobody cares about the money - take it. Don't kill anyone to do it. We'll probably find out it was all for a couple of bucks and change. *SIGH* what a waste ....

The families of these young women are strong. I don't know if I would be catatonic or a vigilante if my daughter was killed. I pray for Ms. Chapa's and the families' continued strength.

So if another guy's non lesbian daughter is murdered then does her death make the front page? Is there some issue that overrides all others that make the papers? I mean what if some guys child is killed for milk money? Does that make the papers? I guess what I am saying is anyone who commits a murder is MONSTER! Any reason that they kill is invalid. Ergo: MONSTER. Anyone can kill for any reason murder is murder and the perpetrator is diseased. No special circumstances should be given over one murder than another. Those who kill should receive the same penalty regardless of the reason they committed the offense. No special extra modifiers because someone is gay, straight, lesbian, black, white or a terrible karaoke singer!!!

If you knew you were stupid-would you still post? Motive is a factor in any crime.

To Bill Collins---Not trying to start an argument but was wondering- if this was your daughter would you not want to kill the guy yourself, I would and if I got the opportunity,I would

I hope this young lady gets well enough to see this man brought to justice and to tell us what she thinks of MSNBC's coverage of this tragedy.

That's got to be a tough and delicate conversation with someone with a severe head injury - to tell them that someone they loved or worked closely with was killed by the same thug, but that you were the "lucky one" because you escaped with at least part of your brain intact. Whether it's Gabby Giffords or this young woman, it must just add to the trauma.

On an unrelated note, I am really irritated by the embedded video on this page. This sort of thing is why I stopped surfing for news on the ABC News website. I click on a story, and video, preceded by a commercial, comes blaring on. On this page, the commercial does not allow for the option of skipping, pausing, or even turning down the volume. Very irritating.

I really hope they find this killer of the Texas "TEEN". I find it disturbing that media outlets cover this story not because they find it news worthy, but rather they want to write "Lesbian Teen" and show a picture of two young woman kissing.

Or maybe it's simply the fact that hate crimes against gays are a real problem, and thus national news? Whatever the motives actually turn out to be, the fact that no other motive is apparent right now means that it's news.
