Report: Chicago family finds dog dead in oven after burglary

A family in Chicago returned from vacation to find the home burglarized and its dog lying dead in the oven.

The family – a single mother with girls ages 7 and 9 – had gone on vacation on July 2, said police in Arlington Heights, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. A neighbor checked on the home late in the evening of July 3, and the family returned home late the following morning, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Arlington Heights police Sgt. Rick Kappelman said the house was entered by unknown persons during the two-day vacation, and $3,000 worth of jewelry was taken. Family members initially thought the burglars had stolen their dog too, police said.

It wasn’t until the following morning when a 9-year-old girl went to use the convection oven and discovered their Cavachon dog named Coco inside. Police say the oven had been turned on.

A necropsy on the dog by the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine revealed the dog was cooked in the convection oven, but it is unknown whether the dog was killed or injured before it was put inside.

Kappelman said it was a domestic case, and the person of interest is an ex-boyfriend who was out on bond from a previous domestic charge.

Kappelman said the homeowner has an order of protection against the ex-boyfriend, stemming from a May 20 harassment incident.

The man was arrested June 4 for allegedly violating that order of protection by “repeatedly texting, emailing and telephoning" the woman, Kappelman said.

“It’s terrible for someone to do something like that to a poor, defenseless animal,” a neighbor told the Chicago Sun-Times. “[The 9-year-old] was definitely devastated.”

The home’s alarm system was turned off to allow another neighbor to check on the dog while they were on vacation, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.

That's not funny on ANY level, Jimbo.......the son of a bitch that would do that is one sick basturd. And anyone thinking of a humorous comment about it may not be much better. You ought to maybe think about what kind of guy YOU are........

Poor dog - most are very trusting of humans, and will keep forgiving no matter how they are treated. I sure hope the degenerate that did this gets thrown into a wood chipper or something else appropriate.

Oh my God I am sick to my stomach. How in this world can someone do this. The death must have been the worst form of torture. I realllllllllly wish I could get my hands on this perpetrator along with a bat. This is just something that takes your breath away in a very bad way. I would never be the same if that were my dog. I am so sorry for this family. This man DESERVES to be tortured.

I came here to read the comments and unfortunately I'm not disappointed.

As despicable as this act is, wouldn't it be nice to see the same outrage for one of our Border Agents being murdered while in the line of work?

This isn't surprising though, as most Americans priorities have been sadly misplaced. Hopefully we can soon have a real leader that will encourage our dysfunctional society back to normalcy.

In hopes that the dog was already dead before putting him in an oven, I was thinking, the oven door is usually very easy to open. I know if my dog wanted out he could probably just push it from the inside, right? Well, maybe it's just wishful thinking but it would seem easy enough for it to get out if it was still alive.

What a horrible story. I hope they catch this a-hole and throw him in jail for the rest of his miserable life!

Right, JimSpence, because our current leader is the whole reason people do stuff like this...no one did anything horrible in the two and a half centuries this country has been in existence until now, right? Seriously, this is why no one takes you seriously (and don't tell us they do...they pretend to so as not to hurt your slow witted feelings).

Back on track, yes, whoever did this should roast in an oven for a good while themselves. Horrible.

Wonder who else would have know that the lady and children would be out of town, etc. Would love to know what the ex has to say about his whereabouts when during the time this went down. As someone stated earlier, if a person would do this to an animal, they are capable of doing it to a human, just as well.

That said, if you have an alarm on your home, set up a special 'visitor' code for people to use when they take care of your home. Most alarm systems allow for several codes for pet sitters, maids, etc. so that one can see who is accessing their home at any given time.

This is a total shame that someone (and we likely know who) is such a low life that they have to take out their anger on a defenseless animal. Dude, seriously, get over it....go out with someone else and while you're at it, get some professional help, you are in great need for that!

@Jim Spence: That's what happens when a culture puts an animal's life as the same value of a human's. Not saying what the guy did wasn't sick and I also think he should be punished, but I think our priorities are out of whack and don't get me wrong I love animals. I don't see what Obama has to do with it though. PETA was around long before him.

This is not too far from the truth. Many sociopathic murderers start off by cold-blooded murders of small defenseless creatures before moving on to humans. Pet/animal anti-cruelty laws are just some silly bleeding heart liberal idea.

On a related note, really makes you wonder about the people posting here who think they are so very funny.

Hate to say this, but my oven has a lever to lock it. Probably to prevent little children from wandering by and peering inside. And that's pretty much all the detail I want to go on about it.

Hmmm, just as I expected. All you sanctimonius, bleeding-heart, limp-wristed, Liberals/Progressives have more compassion for a dog than the murder of one of our brave Border Agents whose investigation was criminally stopped by executive privelege to avoid exposure. In your convoluted mind this somehow makes sense. You can all sit here on your cherished PMSNBC site and pat each other on the back about your typical irrational feel good social justice nonsense but your true priorities are still pathetically misguided.

I stand by my conclusion and all real Americans agree.

I know it's hard for you to understand Jim but we can care about two different things at once, if you work at it long enough you may be able to develop that skill too. In your convoluted mind expressing disgust at this heinous act is some bizarre proof that "liberals have more compassion for a dog then a border agent" the fact that you can find partisan politics in the torture of a defenceless animal says all I need to know about you.

Too bad she didn't think enough of the dog to board him or send him to a friend's house while she was vacationing. The dog is dead because she made a bad choice.

        #2.4 - Wed Jul 18, 2012 9:32 AM EDT

The dog is NOT dead because she made a bad choice. If I were going on a 2-3 day vacation, I would do and have done, the same - leave my pet at home where I knew they would be comfortable, as well as having someone come to check on them.

Poor Coco is dead not because of her owners decision, but because of a raving lunatic who chose to break into her home and to take her pet from her in the worse way imaginable.

aye. As a reporter in Florida, I once covered a story where a young cruelty officer spent two years of his life investigating a case where a man set fire to his girlfriend's dog after she broke up with him. There was a witness. He was finally! sentenced to two years in jail and a $2000 fine. Too often these offenders walk. It's time that judges and prosecutors enforce the laws of our country when they apply to animals as well as people.

Incidentally, it's been said by professionals that killing of animals is a signl of those who kill people next. I hope this gal and her small daughters will be very very protected from him.

          Politico,

You are very right. Cruelty against the family animal is a way of causing pain to the woman and children. Its a power play. Proof of how they can really hurt you if you don't fall into line. As someone who worked with DV victims, its all too common to have the pet harmed if the wife leaves. The fear of harm to a child or pet is often why women stay in abusive relationships. Make no mistake, if he gets away with this, the women and her kids will be at risk for one of these murder/suicides you read about.

I really wish people would start taking domestic violence seriously. DV is deadly. We need stronger punishments for the abusers. Protection orders are not worth the paper they are written on. Even if the woman doesn't want to press charges, if there is enough evidence the police should be able to press charges against the jerks.

Rather than turn the alarm system off so the neighbor could check on the dog - couldn't they/shouldn't they give the neighbor the alarm code and change it when they got back from vacation - leaving the home and the dog at least somewhat protected. Seems like if you have a protection order against someone you would not let your guard down even while going on vacation. imho

It is possible on some alarm systems to give out personal passwords to each individual who you would like to have access to your house while you are away.

In this way, no one knows your personal password.

You can expire the temporary passwords or leave them for each individual so that they do not have to remember a new password every time you ask them to check on the house.

Either way, you do not leave you house vulnerable to that kind of attack.

Why the dog was not left with someone who could attend to it better than once a day is something I would have an issue with, but that aside, this never should have happened and that individual should be very carefully studied by a professional because it is well documented as a starting point for many, many disorders and indicators of horrible behaviors eventually involving humans.

You take the dog to a kennel and leave the alarm active. Three days at a kennel is not that much. Especially for a small dog like that.

If you've got a schmuck harassing you, you leave the alarm on when you go away, you give the code to the neighbor to get in, and you change the code when you get home.

By killing a defenseless dog, it's just a next logical step that the ex would be next on the list, and even the kids. There IS a reason we have prisons...the alternative is to either have these free-floating psychos loose among us, or kill them on the spot (and that did happen a lot back in the old days).

It's a suburb and always has been, it has no connection to the city other than a way to get there and the people living there saying they live in Chicago.... which they don't.

I think this is sad for the family but is this story national news? We got elderly people here in CA being murdered in their home but it doesn't make national news!

The dog's breed isn't mentioned, but even if it's an ankle biter/barker, a typical burglar will just lock a yapping dog in a bathroom or whatever to make their life easier while ransacking the place. Putting the dog in the oven and turning it on is too over the top for someone just stealing jewelry. Sounds like a vindictive ex to me. So, unless the (Keystone) cops are going to pull a JonBenét Ramsey, they really, REALLY need to put the ex under a magnifying glass and look HARD at his movements that night.

IMHO it's a 99.98% chance it's the ex. The ex would probably also know the moment the family left too, since a lot of people who have orders of protection against them tend to be stalkers. The timing is just too perfect for it to be a random dog hating burglar.

The breed is listed in the article as "Cavachon"....never heard of that breed, but it's in there.

Cavachon is a cross between Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bischon. Weights in about 20 lb. or less, and looks like a curly-coated cocker spaniel. Probably was incapable of pushing open an oven door.

I hope the pert is caught soon and never again sees the out-side of a prison.

I think you guys need to reread Jim's post. I don't see him accusing Obama of sneaking into Chicago late that night, breaking and entering the house, burglarizing the place, and sticking the dog in the oven. Of course he didn't do it; Oblameo would have stuck around to eat the dog.

By the way, where was he during that time period?

Good grief, people, grow a brain and use it!

Perfect solution for the person that did this, two gallons of gasoline and a match. They deserve to die with as much pain as humanely possible.

If evidence determines that the ex-boyfriend is guilty of these crimes, please stick him in an oven and cook him to death.

I volunteer to be the hangman if no one else is willing to do the dirty work. It'd be my pleasure to dispose of him if he's guilty. The job is reward enough.

people who do this kind of thing to animals are oftentimes willing to do it to people as well, and to do it to someone's beloved pet is an abomination.

Chicago style slow-cooked dog. The homeowner must have been expecting the President to come home for a vacation and wanted to feed him his favorite dish.

Hey, my three dogs and three cats love me. Two golden retrievers, one lab mix and three domestic short-hairs. All but two were adopted. The last one was the lab mix with huge health issues that came to my door in the middle of last winter. After spending over $700 for surgery and shots, he is my most loyal companion. The last cat was a rescue after Hurricane Katrina. Don't judge me by a few jokes to pass the day.

                  Road Warrior...just a question...

Do you have the GUTS to go deliver these jokes to the devastated little girl who found her dog dead in the oven?

There's this thing called empathy...you might want to google it. It applies to humans as well as your rescues.

I can not imagine what that dog went thru before it died. IF it was the boyfriend, I bet the dog was wagging his tail when he picked him up and shoved him in the oven. That is one cold MF!

I do have an observation to note - a LOT of you want to fry whoever did it just like what was done to the dog - stick him in the oven, pour gasoline on him and light a match, hang him, etc. etc. etc. How many of you would do/or what someone else to do the same if he did it to another human being? In other words - are you for the death penalty for killing a dog but not a human? I noticed that a lot of the posters on death penalty articles are the same here. Just want to know.

Is it too late to take up a collection for a custom built convection oven......say
about the size of a side by side fridge?

Agree, for all those making fun, or worrying a bit too much about the dog (yes, those who value dogs above humans) - think about the little girl who opened that door. That is where the focus needs to be. she could be really damaged by this.
