Three men say they were abused by Jerry Sandusky in '70s or '80s

Pat Little / Reuters file

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky leaves the Centre County Courthouse in handcuffs after his conviction in a child sex abuse trial in Bellefonte, Penn. on June 22, 2012.

Three men have told police they were abused by Jerry Sandusky in the 1970s or 1980s, according to a local report Monday.

Sources close the Sandusky case say they are the first people to allege abuse before the 1990s by the 68-year-old convicted pedophile, The Patriot-News reported

In the early 1970s when one of the men said he was abused, the former Penn State assistant football coach would have been in his late 20s.

Sandusky was convicted in June on 45 counts of child sex abuse against 10 victims. As the case unfolded, more alleged victims came forward – including Sandusky’s adopted son – to say they were also abused.

The grand jury investigation is still meeting and could potentially hear from more alleged victims. When Sandusky is sentenced in September, he could face hundreds of years behind bars for the crimes for which he was convicted.

There is no mention of victims before the 1990s in the Freeh report, an independent account detailing the results of an eight-month internal investigation of the actions of Penn State employees.  The report, authored by Judge Louis Freeh and his law firm, was made public Thursday.

Penn State needs to pay dearly so that a clear unmistakable message is sent that covering up for pedophiles will not be tolerated. As the saying goes, "It's not the crime, it's the cover up."

Penn State should have to give EVERY PENNY made from their precious FOOTBALL Games to the VICTIMS of Sandusky (and covered up by Joe Pa) ,for the next TEN YEARS at least.

Amen.

As the saying goes, "It's not the crime, it's the cover up."

Actually, in this case, I'd say it is the crime.

Which is not to condone, excuse or otherwise pardon those people an Penn State who failed in their duties in this sordid affair.

Patsy not everybody is willing to admit to being abused as children. Hell, I'm 51 years old and have never told my family about the abuse I suffered as a child and I never will. Why be victimized a second time by having to listen to ignorant people making ignorant comments like yours.

PatSycamore - are you for real ???????????? Can you relate to the ***literally*** thousands of young kids abused, assaulted - if not, in many cases "disappeared" - at the hands of the "Catholic Butchers" ??? Do you think - for a second - that these people pick on kids that have any "strength" in them, or their families ?? Forget the threats, the ridicule, the suicidal inclinations that come with being a relentlessly abused KID! by - almost ALWAYS - very powerful, and ALWAYS extremely manipulating ADULTS.

Is your question as DUMB as it looks ???

    @Patsy 1.3 post

Your only a tad off base in your logic. IMO, anyone who has the ability prove they rode an elevator alone or shared a cab with this guy should file a claim. Penn state had a war chest of money already established before the verdict was read. They (Penn state) just want this to go away, ASAP.

Sandusky, rightly so, will spend the rest of his life using soap on a rope while Penn state writes some checks and washes their hands in Jerry juice and life goes on. Wrong! Penn state must suffer some meaningful penalty or the Sandusky's/Penn state administrators of the world will never be discouraged. We all loath frivolous litigation, and we also want those who were truly a victim to receive just compensation, but a "Nittany Lions" worth of endless law suits might be in order.

@Patsy these older men coming foward now actually makes a lot of sense. Sandusky didn't just wake up one morning and decide to become a middle-aged pedophile. He has been doing this to boys since he was in puberty himself. There are hundreds more of Sandusky victims that are still silent. Reasons people stay silent are their own. Money doesn't compensate for everything. Timing of this is not at all suspicious. They waited until after the trial simply because the crimes against them had passed the statute of limitations and couldn't be tried.

Who knows, Patsycamoure? Unless you've been sexually abused, you can't possibly know what goes on in the minds of victims. You can't know how hard it would be to come forth, and how long it might take to get up the courage.

No doubt part of the reason victims find it so difficult to speak out has to do with the fingerpointing and despicable remarks made by others who blame them for the sexual abuse or call them liars.

Patsy - women are afraid to come forward when they are raped by men. Imagine a boy being raped by a man and how society views homosexuality - don't you think they may find it harder to come forward than a woman? Plus, they were children at the time they were raped and an evil adult can find many ways to scare and control a child!

Victims of abuse blame themselves and are shamed into silence. Penn State should be left penniless for the horrific cover up of this scandal. Everyone involved dead or alive should be held accountable and should be writing checks right along with Penn State. No amount of money in the world can right the wrong of these monsters. May they all burn in hell.

All I'm saying is that we need to be careful about people who come out of nowhere after a guilty verdict with the apparent intent to cash in on it.

...and if you had just said that, as opposed to making a smart remark, I believe most people would have understood those concerns, which are real and possible. Instead you chose to voice your concerns from the perspective of a 13-year-old, not an adult.

Sometimes how you say something is just as important as what you say.

So many self rightious people here. slash from you own comments you express that child abuse is something that is not so hard that it can't be over come. My son was molested his tutor when he was in school and has done fine in overcoming it without cleaning out the molestor financially. Money will not make anything go away. Our justice system is putting sandusky in prison so justice will be served we have reached the point that we unless a victim is paid so much money that there is no need to work again then there was no justice. Making Sandusky give up his freedom and spending the rest of his life behind bars isn't enough it seems to you greedy individuals. You want the college and everyone who worked there to be bankrupted and hung. The criminal was found guilty. He is the one accountable but money should not be at issue here and will not majically make any emotional trauma go away.

I tend to agree with Patsycamore on this one...what purpose does coming out about the abuse serve now other than to try to get your hand in the money bag? It cannot help him be prosecuted, it does not shine light on what he was doing. If they were afraid of coming forward why does that suddenly change now? I hate that my mind has to work in that direction but unfortunately that is the mindset of society today, to take advantage of actual victims in order to benefit yourself. For those who say it's insensitive or that it doesn't happen just look at the Bernie Fine case from Syracuse.

Also, what sense does it make to shut down the football program or the university? All that accomplishes is punishing a bunch of students who had nothing to do with what was happening. Anyone complicit in the cover-up should be punished accordingly but it should not affect everyone else at the university. You're talking about shutting down one of the top 15-20 public universities in the nation, along with all of the research that goes along with it. There is a total enrollment of over 90,000 along with countless jobs provided. Even the football program, think about the number of jobs associated. Closing those down makes no sense.

I have several thoughts. One possibility (and this is from the adopted son) is that the men may have suppressed memories of what happened to them and the pulicity surrounding the trial began to stir things up for them again. Unsure of what they were remembering they may have gone through a period of self doubt and only after sometime had passed and memories solidified did they feel sure enough about what happened to make a claim of abuse.

Another scenario would be that they were abused during a time period that was notorious for not believing the victims and shaming them into silence. Similar to victims of abuse by Catholic clergy, these victims did not feel that they would be believed, especially since their attacker was so respected in the community. Now that a guilty verdict has been found, their fears of being vilified for making the accusation have been alleviated somewhat and they have reason to expect that they may finally be believed.

And finally, It is possible that some kids who had dealings with this man but were not assaulted will be attempting to cash in on a future payday. As much as it disgusts me, it does happen and to pretend that it doesn't is to be naive. In these situations where the abuse was years in the past, it's going to come down to their word versus his word. There is no physical evidence any longer. Now that his word has been so greatly damaged and graphic details of what he was seen to have done are available to the public, it is much easier for a con to pull it off. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen in this case, because when it does it makes it that much harder for real victims coming forward to be believed. But yeah, it's certainly possible.

So I guess in the end what I'm thinking is that we can't just automatically assume that anyone who makes a claim of abuse is lying to make a quick buck. We also can't assume that everyone who makes a claim of abuse is telling the truth. We must hear the details, find out what their relationship to Sandusky was, evaluate if their story is plausible, and in the end- it's going to be a judgement call. I do believe that there are more victims and likely they are from that era, so that makes sense. Even Sandusky expected that more men would be coming forward. I hope that they are telling the truth, but I don't really care if a couple of liars slip through because I beleive that the man is guilty as hell of so much more than he was convicted on and deserves to be put down. My only regret is that raping a child isn't a capital offense.

While Patsy seems to sound like an insensitive idiot lacking compassion for victims of child rape, in her nasty comments there may be some concerns. It's going to be quite difficult at this point to determine the validity of those who come forth this late in the process. Sadly there are people in this world who would come forth with a vulgar story to cash in, while true victims and their stories fall by the wayside.

There are no winners in this tragedy. My heart and prayers continue to go out to the victims.

Srich is right about Patsy's post. As much as we hate to think about it there are other equally qualified POS's out there that could try to make a quick buck off this. That being said I'm not saying this is or isn't the case here but it does not surprise me that there would be others from farther back. Maybe not alot but sicko Sandusky had to get a start somewhere and it is my guess there are some that he hurt first until he worked his way up to what we are hearing about happened in the 90's and on.

Whatever the case though there really are no winners here and Penn State better get ready to start paying out thru the nose and on its own accord needs to suspend the football program for a year or more; then the NCAA needs to tack on some additional time as well. I'm thinking a total of 4-5 yrs with no football program plus all the payouts and other fines, loss of accreditation and federal/state monies, things that will all have to be earned back. As for that sick SOB Sandusky, why bother with hundreds of years, just shoot him and get it over with. I think he deserves to be cornholed daily by bubba from now until he dies but my guess he gets solitary or protective custody and wouldn't surprise me if he did get that that he ends up liking it at some point. Won't change what happened but at least we will know he is no longer around and we (taxpayers) won't be paying for 3 hots and a cot for the next 20+ yrs.

    It is time

We have either some REALLY ignorant people here, perhaps "naive" [???] or else VERY stupid !! Or at worst, "ALL of the above"

Is anyone surprised? You don't wake up one day at say the age of 50, and suddenly become a pedophile. There are many more victims. I think it is to late for them to take any legal action. It would help fight this behavior if more victims could come forward. Single mothers in particular...beware of men wanting to befriend your children. Many pedophiles will become involved with a woman in order to get to her children. I pray for all the victims.

When it comes to the law and the legal system, there's a saying, "there is no justice, just us". While Sandusky was arrested and tried, finally, I think this comment by Billionaire Plaintiff's Attorney, Dickie Scruggs, explains the climate surrounding Penn State, law enforcement in that town and the majority of people in that town as well as their alumni, even though Scruggs was talking about something else:

‘[W]hat I call the 'magic jurisdiction' (suing in certain courts where they know they can easily win). . . ‘[is] where the judiciary is elected with verdict money. The trial lawyers have established relationships with the judges that are elected . . . . They've got large populations of voters who are in on the deal . . . . And so, it's a political force in their jurisdiction, and it's almost impossible to get a fair trial if you're a defendant in some of these places . . . . Any lawyer fresh out of law school can walk in there and win the case, so it doesn't matter what the evidence or the law is.

It's also almost impossible to get a fair trial, or get the police or institution to do anything, in some of these places, too. As much as this case has angered people outside of this town, look at the response to the accusations from Penn State, the students and alumni. Even now Penn State has money pouring in from donations. WHY? Who in their right mind would support an institution that's an accessory to such atrocities by covering up and looking the other way?

As much as everyone denies their football program wasn't the reason for not doing anything, you don't have to look any further than their football program. Even Joe P knew his days were numbered and that's why he negotiated his contract early; a contract that should be null and void just because of his own lack of action. Penn State should be shut down and everyone involved in this cover up, had knowledge of Sandusky's actions, or was told of his actions and did nothing should also be tried as an accessory. And what happened to the DA that was trying to investigate Sandusky years ago??? Murdered??? Threatened??? Paid to disappear???

As far as the wife is concerned, just because you ignore it, it doesn't go away. I guess life was just too good. Yes. And I have to wonder how many of these abused children went on to be abusers because of Sandusky's perverted assaults against them. He's been abusing boys since he was a teenager, at least. He just didn't wake up one day in his 50s and become a homosexual pedophile.

I hope if any of this past victims are in prison, for no matter what, they speak up, too. This man has destroyed many lives and created unending grief and pain for too many to count.

Penn State needs to pay and pay and pay for what they knew about and condoned. As far as I'm concerned, they are as guilty as Sandusky. They stood by and let it happen. They knew what was happening and did nothing.

I'm not surpried. You also don't pass up a cash cow when other people are screaming about getting abused and are raking in the $$$. This whole issue has to be the most scewed up witch hunt and continual saga of an incessant stream of parrots all screaming "I'm abused - I'm abused". Many of you are watching too many movies, talking to too many social workers, or just plain don't have the brains to realize that the best way to make money these days is to jump on the bank-wagon whenever someone gets acused of child abuse - whether they are guilty or not. Best way to make money without having to prove anything! This case has NEVER passed the litmus test of proof beyong a shawdow of a doubt regardless of what another moronic jury decided or what drivel bounces around in peoples minds. Where is the admisson of guilt? Where is the forensic evidence? Where are witnesses other than someone who saw Sandusky naked in a shower with a kid and THOUGHT he heard "smacking" noises - also changed his story about 4 times and had a chip on his shoulder about Penn State - but did NOT, I repeat NOT see any visible sexual contact - he just thought he did. What a crock. If this is how justice is meted out and defined, we might as well call ourselves Bejing. It would be nice to get convictions these days on something other than circumstantial evidence or heresay. I'm not saying Sandusky is innocent; I'm saying the process used to find him guilty was a travesty. Makes 17th Century Salem look like LA Law!

Forensic evidence? How would that have been collected so many years after the abuse?

Oh, and Mike DID see Sandusky in a position that he felt was no doubt anal sex. What do you expect, for him to go up to him to examine if there is penetration?

You have multiple victims with corroborating stories. And a janitor who witnessed Sandusky performing oral sex on a boy. Unfortunately he couldn't testify because of his Alzheimers.

I think it was the Penn State Football program which was raking in the money, and the vendors, and the souvenir sales, the beer sales, etc., which was the driving force for the cover up. The "victims" will get a pittance, and the lawyers will get another chunk. Like the Exxon Valdez oil spill, if there is enough money involved that will be the determination for the length of time this drags out.

Just like the child abuse issues with the Catholic Church. They can drag things out indefinitely. They have the financial incentive to do so. The more time they have to drag things out, the more time they have to squirrel away the money to other accounts. The Paterno family is now apparently going to have it's own investigation of the affair. What will that accomplish? More time. Bernie Madoff was given "time" before his prosecution to get his affairs in order. What did that do for Bernie Madoff's victims.

Butcher the damn cash cow, ( Penn State Football ), grind it up into hamburger, and start feeding it out. I wouldn't doubt that someone who had a sports tap close to the stadium, couldn't make some type of a claim for lost revenues, or other "class action" claims by college sports memorabilia manufacturers who were tooled up and licensed to do business.

JP, I think you ought to visit your optometrist and get a better pair of reading glasses. You are not seeing the larger view. The Sandusky trial is over, other than the sentencing. This other "news" is " Previews of Coming Attractions ". What you're likely to see in the coming months and years is new policy governing athletic coaches, who will get kicked off their high horses to find they have to comply with State Laws not University Policy. You'll see charities like The Second Mile more closely scrutinized, and you'll start seeing parents of student athletes reviewing the athletic program for what it is, a cash cow for the University, not a guaranteed ticket to their child's future success.

The other thing you'll see... the Catholic Church in the US puckering up, because if Penn State football goes by the wayside, you'll see the public tolerance of child abuse by the churches.

Read my comments above this - Buster~!~!

Is a Matter of record/ fact about the confrontation reported at the very outset and since then steam-rolled in the subterfuge of comments - But it is still there - although much forgotten and disregarded.

Along with that US Code states that any persons having Knowledge, of, about, for, any illegal actions is Guilty of Accessory before, during, after the fact -so much for his wife that was cognizant of these goings on- This derived from my days as a Federal Law Enforcement officer in DC Dealing with Drugs, corruption, pay-offs, you name it - Was there - Case histories on file for public access. Sandusky admitted he showered with kids; you think that's NORMAL?? Would you allow an adult male to shower with your kid? Holy crap! There is NEVER any reason for an adult like this old fart to be showering with a child! NEVER.

I agree, tear the statue down. Joe Paterno was a narcissistic coward, ....a total phony. If he was about character, other people, ethical behavior and so forth, he would have done the right thing. But it was about "his" program, which he stuck around far past normal retirement age to achieve records with. He utilized football to glorify himself, to create the legend... To leave a legacy as the best...

What a complete egomaniac, ironic that this despicable lily livered malingerer will always be remembered for what he truly was, not for the myth that he propagated. Bet he just loved those statues they made of him...

What a filthy disgrace to that school, the pair of them, and all of the ones with knowledge of what was going on. I don't know how they can live with themselves.

There's no question that there are many more people out there that this guy violated. It's pathetic, ...those of you who start to focus on how some might try to jump on the band wagon and collect,... who cares? For every one that's a phony, there are probably 5 real victims out there who just want to remain silent, move on and not involve themselves in this situation.

If the NCAA lays sanctions upon schools for comparatively trivial things such as recruiting violations,..... then this school should be banned from football for at least 10 years.... or 20. Allowing that football program to continue is permitting a constant reminder to the victims of the tragic things they were subjected to. Give hem a respectable time to begin the healing process.

I hope this case has made it easier for children to come forward when this accrues. We need to stop these monsters when it happens to the first child not after more have been abused. Child abuse comes in many forms if you're not sure what is going on ask your local police department it can be kept anonymous but please alert someone. If something is happening to you, you may not be the first and chances are you won't be the last.

I wonder if Sandusky might have a brain tumor - I've heard that it is possible that a brain tumor can cause pedophilia. That would account for there being few or no victims from earlier years. Maybe the tumor took away his ability to control his urges. I mean, nobody can just stop being a pedophile - all that a pedophile who wants to try to lead a decent life can do is resist the urges or maybe seek voluntary chemical castration. Until we know how to cure pedophilia, we have to continue putting the ones that get caught in prison, and warning children about the others. I can't understand why the Penn State officials didn't know more about this subject.

          Reply#8 - Mon Jul 16, 2012 6:44 PM EDT

Mary D, Penn State probably included this sad subject in any number of classes. To me, it looks like a cover up and also an unfortunate failure to do the correct thing. I wasn't sitting next to JoPa when he made his decision to pass up this information along the chain of command. I just finished the book "Game Over: Jerry Sandusky, Penn State, and the Culture of Silence" by Bill Moushy and Robert Dvorchak Fact is, everyone involved with the information could have stepped out of protocol and made something happen if they were personally unafraid of possible consequences. None of them did so, including the guy who first witnessed Jerry in a compromising position with a boy in the showers. As for the brain tumor possibility, I doubt that. The damage has been done. Jerry owes a substantial amount.

PHILADELPHIA – Joe Paterno and other top Penn State officials buried child sexual abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago to avoid bad publicity, according to a scathing report Thursday that exposed a powerful "culture of reverence" for the football program and portrayed the Hall of Fame coach as more deeply involved in the scandal than previously thought.

According to the report, Spanier, Schultz and Curley drew up an "action plan" that called for reporting Sandusky to the state Department of Public Welfare. But Curley later said in an email that he changed his mind about the plan "after giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe." Instead, Curley proposed to offer Sandusky "professional help."

In an email, Spanier agreed with that course of action but noted "the only downside for us is if the message isn't (heard) and acted upon and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it."

              Any Questons?

The first time Penn State became aware of Sandusky's conduct, it WAS reported to the authorities and they did nothing. Why would anyone think they would do something this time?It certainly should have been reported to the authorities but I personally think that the person who SHOULD have reported it was McQueary AFTER he stopped the assault. He saw the incident personally. Also please read what was actually said: Curley said that after talking to Joe and thinking it over, he decided that they should not report it unless Sandusky refused counseling. He did not say after thinking it over and then talking to Joe, he made that decision. If he had thought it over and then talked to Joe, it would seem more that Joe agreed with him to not report it. He talked to Joe, then thought it over. Joe probably had a temper tantrum and screamed about how this was going to destroy the football program and after thinking about that, Curley changed his mind about reporting it. If Joe had insisted or even suggested that they not report it, I think Curley would have mentioned that in his emails. He did not. Any one of the people who were aware of the incident could have reported it to the authorities but if any of you know anything about any work environment, you know that if you do an "end around" against your superiors, you will be gone in a hurry. I'm not condoning the silence. Just saying that everyone followed the chain of command and the decision was made at the top by TWO men not to report the incident. And the rest of those who knew about it just washed their hands of it. Was that the right thing to do? No but that's the way the world works. Those of you who want Penn State to give every cent of its money to the victims (they have already started to negotiate settlements) and be destroyed as a university, try to remember that there are over 40,000 Penn State students who did no wrong and are there for a good education. Without Penn State, many or most will not find another school they can afford or that have vacancies. It's sad that two individuals could cost an excellent university its reputation and its ability to continue providing education at a reasonable tuition but that's what happened: TWO individuals in addition to the pedophile created this situation. Don't punish the faculty which did nothing wrong or the students who did nothing wrong.

@ CarTrax: you and the PATERNO family are STILL in denial - delusional. It wasn't just "2 people" - read your "interpretation" of what the FREEH report says - you DEFINITELY READ IT WRONG. PATERNO was an EGOMANIAC: what he said was the "Law of the Pope" ! Ridiculous!

The "AUTHORITIES AT PENN STATE" were Paterno, Culry, Schultz & Spanier - do you REALLY think they are going to "report themselves" when they are raking in HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS and using the NON-PROFIT enterprise of "SECOND MILE" for "washing away" some of the MONEY

If SANDUSKY wasn't so "integral" witrh this NON-PROFIT organization, he'd have been dropped in concrete a LONG TIME AGO - now Wake TF UP

His prison sentence wont last that long. Unfortunately he will probably be put out of his misery! I would like to see him rot in prison. Scared every single day of his life.

There are legitimate victims who deserve compensation. But there will also be many con-men who "come forward" now that the Freeh report and the Sandusky conviction have paved the way for civil cases. It's just the nature of the disgusting human beings who populate this world.

@ Ed from Philly - true statement - but ANYONE who would even try it is going to be scrutinized to the end - ANYONE with the nerve to try to "pull one over" will go to JAIL! Highly unlikely that any such thing can or will happen. And anyone who comes forward - as have the additional three people -will likely have statutes to deal with. The most they will be able to do is to actually document times, places, events that will need to be seriously corroborated, and at that, they may only come forward only only to acknowledge their own experiences, without ever getting any "compensation" except as a courtesy and not so much as a litigatory settlement!

I wonder if there wasnt all this money to be doled out to these victims how many would have actually came forward. a btter question would be is how much money would make the pain go away?
