Bomb threat shuts crossing between Detroit and Canada -- again

Elizabeth Conley / The Detroit News via AP

Members of the Detroit Police Department patrol following a bomb threat that closed the Ambassador Bridge to Canada on Monday.

Authorities shut down one of the busiest bridge crossings between Canada and the United States on Monday evening after receiving a bomb threat, according to Dan Stamper, president of the Detroit International Bridge Company.

“We take any threat very seriously, and set in motion the security measures the bridge has had in place since 9/11, staying in constant contact with first responders,” Stamper said in a statement. “We cannot confirm, but suspect, that this has something to do with Canada's disinvestment at the border by cutting back on customs' agents.”

The bridge reopened around 1 a.m. Tuesday. No device was found, WDIV-TV reported.

The bridge closing comes four days after a man called from a street pay phone, making a similar threat to a nearby commuter tunnel that also connects Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, in Canada, The Associated Press reported. No explosives were found and the call was determined to be a hoax, according to the Detroit Free-Press.

Monday night’s bomb threat was called in around 7:20 p.m. Authorities immediately stopped traffic on the bridge.

I sure hope this threat wasn't done by Detroit's finest known as the Islamic terrorist patrol!

They "suspect" does not mean it is a fact.

Hmm... Wonder if these were called in by the nasty old woman in the customs office who tried like hell not to let me into Canada..

She's THAT kind of evil... HELL would freeze over if she were to enter it.

The Canada-US border used to be among the friendliest in the world. Guess the big government statists had to put a stop to that. Plenty of gaps down by Mexico though. *rolls eyes*

They stopped traffic on the bridge? That's real smart. Should have closed it to incoming traffic and gotten everyone else off ASAP.

        Reply#3 - Tue Jul 17, 2012 12:37 AM EDT

The traffic had been allowed on at the Canadian side, the US officials had little choice, the US side of the bridge emptees into city streets.

the bomb threat in the tunnel wasn't even newsworthy on msnbc. It was 24/7 on the pediphile sandusky.

Maybe it could be some jerk wanting the new bridge built or not built. Gov. Snyder perhaps? Naw, kidding. I doubt it was any Arab from Dearborn though. Wouldn't they have just detonated a bomb if they wanted to do it?

I guess, if you can't think of anything intelligent to add to the conversation you have to demonstrate your IQ with an Arab terrorist comment?

It was someone else who spoke of Arabs, he is making a point that it is unlikely that it was an Arab.

Canada cut back on border patrols, Mexico publishes a pamphlet instructing its people in the best ways and times of the year to actually get across our border.....

We are not a leaky cauldron, we are a damn tunnel, open wide on both ends. We're fighting a "war on terror" on foreign lands while we are wide open on both borders and the president refuses to address border problems.

Either there is a terrorist threat or there isn't. Time to fish or cut bait.

Detroit is a blight that should be blown up entirely. It is wrecking the view for Canadians.

If I was a Canadian I would want that bridge to Detroit not only closed but destroyed.

                        1) At what point was the bridge so unsecure that someone could place a bomb on it without being noticed?

                        2) Why does it only take a phone call to shut down so many public areas for hours? I'm not suggesting shrugging off every threat, but approaching them with caution requires more than shutting down everything.

                        3) If it takes over 5 hours to check for a bomb you might as well not even search. You've already failed.

Threat to old Matty for making his inaccurate claims and flooding our TV's with false advertisements over "Snyder's New Bridge"? Haha

As much as I doubt it, this threat does happen to come at a very convenient time since he somehow managed to get enough signatures on his petition to bring the New Bridge construction to public vote in November, although I don't think it has been officially approved for the ballot yet.

Either way, it would have been pretty convenient for Snyder if the Ambassador Bridge had been blown up. Haha (I support the new bridge anyways.)

Megan, where do you think the billions are going to come from to build a new bridge? And who do you really think will benefit by it? The republicans are whining and crying, boo-hooing and boola-boolying about the President spending money, but this is ok? Start thinking.

twodogloving---True, the Ambassador Bridge looks like it could fall down any minute, and leftists are spending money building bridges where bridges are not needed. That is one good reason to complain.

I haven't heard anyone crying--perhaps the sounds you hear are your own schizophrenic symptoms.

You've got to be kidding, you can't turn on the tv without hearing them scream about the dems spending money. The ambassador bridge will be there 100 years from now, but "looks like it could fall down any minute" sure does sound like a real schizo to me.

twodogsloving - If you believe Matty's statements, then you are very misinformed. Do the research Maybe if Matty Moroun had used the millions he's spent on false advertising (which he just got out of jail for!) on fixing and upgrading the very dilapidated Ambassador Bridge, he wouldn't be in this situation.

The Ambassador Bridge will not be there 100 years from now because steel and concrete break down without proper care and replacing, something Moroun refuses to do.

And if you want to go down that road... Obama's reinvestment act only made our highway overpasses look pretty instead of fixing them! I would have supported the spending if it actually was used to replace the failing and very poor bridges! Instead, they're in the same condition they were in 3 years ago and their rust is back!

Hey, its the news industry. You cannot expect knowledge to accidentally appear in a news report.

The entire news industry is like a cult of blockheads (and they are too chicken to cross bridges--lol).
