A six-alarm fire erupted in the Bronx near Yankee Stadium, damaging 66 apartment units and injuring dozens. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.
Dozens of people, including 33 New York firefighters, were injured in a six-alarm blaze that erupted in the Bronx overnight, sending scores of families into the streets.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight at a six-story building less than a mile from Yankee Stadium with about 600 residents.
Three residents suffered injuries along with the firefighters. The FDNY said most of the injuries were related to heat exposure or were scrapes or bruises; all are believed to be minor. One captain said he experienced chest pain.

More than 200 firefighters battled the blaze during the hot and humid night. The fire chief said it began in a sixth-floor apartment in the back of the building and spread to three other units. One wall partially collapsed and flames could be seen leaping from the roof before firefighters contained it around 5 a.m.
Due to several hot spots that remained early Wednesday, fire officials cautioned that the fire is still active.
It wasn’t immediately known how many people were inside the building when the fire started, but fire officials said everyone has been accounted for.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Office of Emergency Management said 66 units were damaged by the inferno.
The Red Cross is assisting residents who might need emergency shelter or food. Forty families already have registered with the organization.

just sayin
This looks like it was a real pisscutter of a fire. I'm glad no one was seriously hurt.
As a former firefighter, I must say that 33 firefighters injured out of 222 responders is a very alarming statistic. That means almost 15% of the responders were injured. That is a problem needing correction, immediately if not sooner.
Still, the NYFD firefighters did a great job to contain and extinguish this fire!
Yes, but they also said the injuries were due to heat, cuts or bruises. With the extreme heat that has been hanging around for a while now heat exhaustion is understandable, albeit definitely nothing to fool around with. And cuts and bruises are things that often come with the territory and more often than not go completely unreported..it just happened to show up in this news article.
To my way of thinking something that is almost a mile away is not "NEAR". Dozens of firefighters injured in blaze is a big enough headline to grab attention without the spin.
wheels, I AGREE. I thought, "oh no" when I read the headline, but the part about Yankee Stadium held no bearing for me anyway. Very good to know that all injuries were minor, and that everyone got out safely. A situation like this one could have easily turned out to be SO much worse.
Especially in the Bronx...it's not like there's Yankee Stadium, then 1 mile of empty space, and then this apartment building. There are literally hundreds of buildings and thousands of residents in between.
It's not bad enough that the Yankees are on fire in the ML East standings, as usual, they have to have their name inserted into a story about a fire that affected the lives of dozens of people. I hope everyone that was injured recovers quickly and that the building is secured so the residents can return to their homes.
It's all about the big bucks, someone or several someone's wanted that billion dollar real estate.
Fred you got to be a Democrat.
The one eye all seeing eye is behind this. Check out the numerology in this story, all their favorite numbers. Sounds crazy but they are crazy.
I think the better headline is that the firefighters contained a massive fire and everyone got out safely. Happy to hear it, good work from the fdny as always.
When will people get it? To many fires across the US. Maybe not all, but so many fires are suspicious.
I know MSNBC is a non-believer organization, the DEVIL in disquise. My prayers or with the people in their time of need. Just Beleive, in God. That is what our country was founded on.
What a bunch of what evers.
WOW - amazing how you people get caught up on a headline. Just be happy for those involved who were able to get out of that horrible fire with their lives. People, please be a little bit more human.
Thank The Flying Spaghetti Monster that there were no deaths. May everyone involved get well, if injured, and find help if needed.
LIFE IS AWESOME!!
It is the circumstances and situations that surround us that can suck..
I think the reference to Yankee Stadium only served to give some information regarding the location of the fire for those of us not familiar with New York City and its burroughs. The response of the firefighters credits the minimal injuries to residents. Those firefighters risk their lives every day to fight fires and rescue and protect people. Please remember 9/11.
Great job FDNY! you do an extraordinary job to help those in need while people are rushing out of the building you're rushing in to save someone else's life.
I want to hear the Glen and Rush supporters say, "how many fire fighters do we need america".
yea lets cut the Pensions of these Firefighters, how about it all you FOX Followers ?
Good Job FDNY....we love you ....NEVER FORGET !!
(States need to find other places to cut, rather than cut the pensions and benifits of Public Workers)
How about we stop Giving Afganistan and Egypt 8 Billion a month EACH !!..i think that would be enough to get some states out of Debt..How about it Obama ??
Sorry to hear Firefighters were hurt. These guys are real heroes, who actually put their ass on the line for people.
i heard the fire started because some illegal immigrants were roasting a goat in the bath tub.
The title of this story got my attention because of the mention of the Yankee Stadium. Being that I was born and raised in one of those buildings in the Bronx near the Yankee Stadium back in the day when my friends and I used to catch the ball game for free just by going to the Train Station nearby. It brought back memories from the 50s. I also remember the bravery and hard work of the fire fighters in that area.
