FBI raids home of New Jersey capital's mayor

The FBI removes documents from Trenton Mayor Tony Mack's home on Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

The mayor of New Jersey’s capital city has denied any wrongdoing after the FBI raided his home early Wednesday.

About a dozen agents arrived at Trenton Mayor Tony Mack’s home at 1 a.m., the Times of Trenton reported. Camera flashes from investigators could be seen throughout the home from the outside.

Roughly 45 minutes later, they were seen taking equipment from two SUVs into the home.

At about 4 a.m., another seven agents arrived and joined the search.

By 6 a.m. agents could be seen carrying bags and boxes out from inside the home. The search concluded by about 6:15 a.m.

When Mack, 46, emerged from his home Wednesday, he denied any wrongdoing and told reporters, “We have not violated the public trust in any way.”

FBI agents also searched the homes of Mack’s brother and head football coach at Trenton Central High School, Ralphiel Mack, and Joseph “JoJo” Giorgianni, a convicted sex offender who gave thousands of dollars in to Mack’s 2010 mayoral election campaign, according to the Times of Trenton.

Trenton Mayor Tony Mack leaves his home about one hour after the FBI completed a search of the home on Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

No arrests have been made and no charges filed. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey would not say what was under investigation, or whether the office was involved, NBCNewYork.com reported.

Mack’s children were home at the time of the raid and the mayor answered the door in his pajamas, the Trentonian reported. It is believed he remained in the home throughout the entire search.

The New Jersey Democrat has drawn criticism since he was elected in 2010. A citizens group failed to get enough signatures last year to force a recall election when they accused Mack of reckless spending, nepotism and unstable leadership at the cabinet level when he laid off 105 city police officers.

Under an agreement reached last year, Mack can only hire department heads from a pool of applicants the state offers or he risks losing $6 million in state aid.

Mack was sworn into office in July 2010, following a runoff victory over Manuel “Manny” Segura.

3 things a have found whenever a public official is accused of a crime against the people, 1) they always say "we" ( not I), 2) they always deny, deny, deny, and 3) they are always guilty.

Let us send just one FBI agent to Cayman Islands, and find out if the real money is there for Mitt!

Why are you surprised to see a black Democrat in the Capitol of Jersey getting investigated--How many teachers that voted democrat were fired???--to save money of course, but we also in Jersey now need to teach religion, and pay ourselves for the kids education, like the Govenor, so the taxes collected can be used wisely for Job Creators, sitting and planing on the big boats up and down the coast!, and teach the kids with the "right" slant on reality.

So you care more about Mitt's money he worked hard for (and has every right to do with his money as he see fit) BUT you don't care where your tax dollars go ? Oh maybe you don't pay taxes so you don't care.

How about the billions Odummotherf has lost the American Tax payers, and I hate to break it to you BUT a lot of the Dems put there money in The same place. Where did Obama get his money for College ? Where are his college transcripts ? Maybe you should ask the same questions about your political party and Obama

Holly, concerning your last comment (@ #1.8); I can probably prove any day that I am more conservative than you. In your first sentence you are so totally wrong on both counts!

What do you say Holly. We really need a smart con-man that will sell the nation out the front door of the capital and then sneak out the back door at night with everything else - and all the king's men?

Is that right, Holly?

A quick search revealed MANY internal issues in Trenton directly related to the Mayor. And it seems the Mayor is in the limelight for CORRUPTION related issues.

What would one expect in New Jersey ?

And for you Liberals who are making this a Presidential election issue.....GET A FRIGGING LIFE. Wait a minute....that is the Liberal way of doing things.

Reminds me of the interview with a Democratic Party spokesperson on "Happening Now" this morning. He defended Mr. Obama's TAXING proposals on the rich because they make too much money, don't pay enough taxes, and ship jobs overseas. He even mentioned GE was one of the top companies for MAKING TOO MUCH MONEY, NOT PAYING TAXES and SHIPPING JOBS OVERSEAS. Duuuuuuh......Mr. Obama's Jobs Czar is the CEO OF GE. Hypocrite.

For Flyeisty: Mr. Obama's VISION of America is pretty doggone obvious, and that is a CHILLING. But, go ahead and continue on his ObamaWagon, eventually he will throw you and the rest of his voter bases under the Wagon. The street is getting littered with Obama Supporters.

Just like John Kerry's money in the Cayman's is John Kerry's money. Or his money in Switzerland. Or... well, you get the idea. After all, Kerry is at least THREE TIMES as wealthy as Romney.

If they wanted to fire democratic voting teachers, they'd have to fire all of the unionized ones. You know, the ones that are paid to vote that way.

The FBI is in NJ now because they are finished with their work in Cuyahoga County, OH, no one left to bust in the County Offices. So blatant that the citizens passed an intiative to change the way the county is governed. If you want a good read, do a search on Frank Russo or Jimmy DiMora. Unbelievable stuff, including lap dances, prostitutes, and Vegas junkets. You couldn't make that stuff up.

Jon Jones -- Even more troubling is to see that two of Fiesty's comments have been deleted. What's with that? She must have written a commentary that really upset one or more of the NBCNews.com censors.

It is interesting to see that the FBI and the IRS use the same tactics - "middle of the night raids." Even more reason to barricade your doors. I suppose the mayor should be very thankful the IRS was not there with the FBI.

Think of all the costs of the "man hours" and people that went into the planning and completion of this raid. I would guess that it might amount to several hundred thousand dollars. Yepp, there must be something really, really, really, BIG about to happen with the mayor.

71% of inmates in federal prisons claim to be democrats! Is it any wonder that democrats want criminals to be able to vote?

I couldn't like this enough. There is a report on the NY Times website about the budget crisis states are facing due to acts that should be criminal (or at least would be to the general public). It's enough to realize that the problem at the Federal Level may not be as serious as the problem on the State level. It's the state politicians for the most part who get the longest duration of service because people just blindly vote.

The economic crisis has exposed illegal behavior and frankly the families and friends of these scumbags need to get the hit as well. Who knew a politician could practice insider trading with impunity until recently? Have you ever met a broke politician that lost his money in the market? Think about that for a minute. The financial crisis even bankrupted millionaire entertainment moguls and celebrities...BUT NO POLITICIANS?

The New Jersey Democrat has drawn criticism since he was elected in 2010. A citizens group failed to get enough signatures last year to force a recall election when they accused Mack of reckless spending, nepotism and unstable leadership at the cabinet level when he laid off 105 city police officers.

Seriously, read the story..THEN take a step backwards from the computer, go get a drink of water, go outside and take a breath of fresh air and then come back inside....then IF and only IF you feel you have an educated thought that should be shared with others......open a window and scream it at the neighbors because we dont want to hear it!

At least I understand the different meanings of the words. Capital is like what you do to the first letter of a sentence or name. Capitol is the main city much like Washington D.C. is the capitol of the United States or Austin is the capitol of Texas.

granted the reason they were there has not at this time been published, but really, do you believe the FBI has both the resource's and time to dedicate 19 agents to this randomly?

Sounds like the cops are looking for revenge for the 105 laid off ones. More dirtbag tactics to me, but we'll see if he's actually guilty of something. I think it will be pretty easy to see if the cops fabricate a story against him.

The FBI stands for Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI agents are Federal cops not Trenton city cops.

                      Time to wake up!

i've been reading all these posts and i just have to laugh! blame the democrats! blame the republicans! obama's a facist! it's all bush's fault! are you all kidding me? if you really want to know who's FAULT it is that there are crooks in the government you need to no further than your mirror. we are ALL guilty. WE put those people in office. WE listen to the commercials and do NOTHING to see if they are being honest. we've come to accept corruption the government by re-electing the same people over and over again. as bad as you thought bush was, thank god, he was only able to work his 'magic' for 8 years. and if obama wins, he'll only last another four years. but! our congressmen, our senators, our mayors in many cities, our state legislators can just go on and on entrenching themselves in.

YOU all voted these people in! YOU listen to the commercials and buy into the lies! YOU vote along party lines like a bunch of lemmings! and if you don't vote, you've got nothing to complain about. You have your chance to make your voice heard and you do nothing! the idea that elections can be bought is BS. a politician can spend all the money he wants, but no one is going into the voting booth and putting a gun to your head. maybe we should all grow up and take responsibility for our own choices. we have every right to demand that our public officials are held to a higher level. they are supposed to be the example. and we have every right to take them out of office when they do not keep that promise. but, we do nothing! how many senators and congressmen have been in office for twenty years or more? if the people in congress refuse to negotiate with each other in good faith, vote them out! don't just complain. if they insist in partisan politics to the detriment of the common good, vote them out. believe me, if you and me and everyone else was writing to our respective leaders threatening to vote against them if they didn't start working together, they would change. if we were to take to the streets and (peacefullly) demand that they get off their bony a**es and do some work, there would be a change, because these people love power more than they do anything else and if they thought their power was in danger, they'd change. why do you think so many republican leaders jumped on the teaparty bandwagon. do you really think they give a rat's behind about what those people want? are you kidding me? the teaparty got vocal and demanding and threatened anyone who went against them with their jobs...and they all fell in line like bowling pins. the democrats are the same way. i have to admit, not as bad...after all the democrats have not yet sold their allegiance of their country by signing a pledge, not to the people they represent but to one man, governor norquist who seems to think that HE'S the president in absentia.

if i were to vote republican, i would vote against anyone who signed that pledge. i voted against everyone in my state that voted to invade iraq, democrats and republicans alike. of course, my one vote may not seem to mean that much. but, my vote and your vote and everyone's vote would make a big difference. there has never been a more urgent need for people to get out and vote and let their public servants-they are there to serve us- know that we will no longer accept corruption as par for the course. but, before any of this can happen we all need to accept that WE are the problem. you can't change things when you refuse to first accept responsibility.

This kind of stuff is going to go on till after Nov. just to make it look bad for Democrats. What we should be checking is who is running against this guy or what policies do maybe someone else want in the city that the mayor is against.

This is exactly what I thought. What was the purpose of the raid? What were they looking for regarding what potential violation? I don't know this politician or his history, but to raid his house at 1 a.m. with his children there seems extreme. Would have been nice to find out what the purpose was.

                                macgillaebay,

Why is a raid at 1am extreme? Happens everyday. You know why? Because they know he will be home and less likely to destroy potential evidence if he is caught by surprise, which he apparently was. Law enforcement officers have search warrants signed by judges and magistrates authorizing the search, backed up by sworn affidavits from someone from the investigating agency. They don't just show up randomly, and you can bet this investigation has been going on for quite a while to get to the search warrant phase.

And, guess what, you don't have a right to know what they were looking for just yet. Most likely the warrant was sealed to protect sources, etc., and will come out in due time, probably after the Grand Jury phase, where the mayor will either be indicted or not. Stop trying to put your conspiracy theory hats when when it is apparent you have no idea how the legal process works.

And ranmarie, you are apparently just plain delusional. Run along now, I think they are having pudding for dessert tonight! Yay!

Remember in the spring when Obama's two daughters went on a junket to South America with Michelle O. and were OFFICIALLY listed as Senior Aides so they and their expenses were paid? No nepotism there having two children listed as Senior Aides.
