No criminal charges for military in Secret Service scandal

Seven American soldiers and two Marines received administrative punishment but were not charged criminally in the prostitution scandal that involved members of the Secret Service in Cartagena, Colombia. One airmen has also received a letter of reprimand.

Three soldiers who received non-judicial punishment have asked to face court martial in an effort to clear their names, defense officials told NBC News.

Two sailors implicated in the scandal remain under investigation.

The 12 servicemembers accused of consorting with prostitutes were in Colombia to help provide security and communications for an upcoming visit by President Obama. They were charged in a military investigation that was ordered after several Secret Service agents were caught in an explosive scandal, accused of taking prostitutes back to their hotel rooms.

I think a disclaimer should be typed in bold face an all military enlistment paperwork, directly above the line for signature, that no person in the military shall have sex while away from their permanent residence. Let's see how recruiting goes. Hells Bells, Benjamin Franklin had more sex in France than he did in the US.

Military members have been trying to make mothers out of whores for centuries...who cares.

Just boys being boys. If I was Obama, I don't think I'd be pissing off the people who are suppose to take a bullet for me.

Any wives or girlfriends who had husbands or boyfriends who served on a NAVY ship in the Pacific during Vietnam, I can guarantee you that he got his horn straightened by the "bar Girls in the Phillipines. The US Seventh Fleet always pulled into Subic Bay during Vietnam. I knew guys on my ship who were married and could not resist the temptation. A lot of guys got NSU or NGU or as it was later named Chalmydia. Some guys brought it home to the US. Subic Bay and Cubi Point Naval Air Station sustained over 10,000 cases of VD each month from all the ships in and out of there. The Officer corp was no different. On the ship I was on I could smell the incense burning as I walked past the pfficers staterooms. Two officers to a stateroom. Of course this was around 300AM.

I really like (sarcasm) all the closed minded socially conditioned people on here decrying "prostitution". You have ALL taken part in prostitution but don't realize it because it is hidden in your conditioning. Sex prostitution is arbitrarily made illegal as to try and prevent the spread of communicable diseases and we STILL allow religious morals to influence our legislation. If you've ever been out on a date that ended up or eventually ended up with intimate activities AND you didn't pay for your half of all the costs of that or those dates then you HAVE participated in PROSTITUTION. The payer is the john and the recipient of the pay is the prostitute. You must ask your righteous selves, what is the difference between paying up front or receiving payment in the form of free dinner, drinks and movie? There isn't, except that you think in your conditioned minds that one is not OK but the other is. What do you or society care if people conduct such activities between two adults? It really isn't your business now, is it?

Maybe its me, but I think paying for prostitutes with American tax payer dollars is just wrong. Their pay IS American taxpayer money. However, if they were using their wives or girlfriends pay...it becomes so much more a PERSONAL issue. Not governmental.

With his $130,000 supervisory secret service salary, how cheap not to pay the whore $50. If he had paid her no one would have ever known about their antics. This is just another example of how the caliber of person we accept in any of the law enforcement jobs today. If you look at the State Police types today you will see many of them have tatoos. Tatoos were originally done to brand criminals. Now the police are sporting them. The influence of easy drug money has also turned the heads of many cops. The offices of Judical misconduct in nearly every state has its share of crooked judges. So goes the way of the world. The US is not far from operating the way so-called third world or backward nations operate.

retiredsgt - I agree whole heartily with your comment. When I was in the Army (1960 - 1980) there was usually two things men were good at, getting drunk and using prostitutes My first overseas tour in Korea (1960 - 1961) when you went to the orderly room to pick up your pass you were given condoms also.

I would suspect these military men were members of a EOD unit and never had any direct contact with the President.

As a matter of fact there are a number of different regulations forbidding this kind of
action. The ironic thing is that President Bush made combating this type of
action a high priority. As a result, every active duty, government civilian and civilian
contractor that works for the US government must now take an annual "Human
Trafficking" refresher course meant to educate them on not only the
penalties if they get caught but also the moral issues. Many of the
establishments that cater to this cliental have coerced women to leave their
home countries for better paying restaurant jobs only to find out these
restaurant’s main course are naïve minors from far away lands. Of
course, it is impossible for a person to stay naïve forever so a lot of my
co-workers justified their behavior at the bars outside Osan and Kusan by noting
that a lot of the girls were in a phase where they were trying to get a service member to
marry them. This doesn’t change the fact that when most of them left the Philippines
they were 14 and were under the impression they were going to work for
                  legitimate establishments.

But what is really frustrating is that for the past 7 or 8
years every active duty military, federal government employee and civilian
support contractor has had the US taxpayer pay them 1 hour a year so they could complete a course called “Human Trafficking”. This program has to cost
the government $100’s of millions of dollars yet from the results of this
incident and the majority of the comments on this page neither the current
administration nor the American taxpayer believes in the objectives of this
                  program.

All these dudes were off duty, but whatever. My issue is, months later and this is still a "scandal" but shortly after this, a Secret Service dude runs over a lady and kills her in in NY somewhere, yet we hear nothing about it after that day. Ridiculous!

Human trafficking is a problem all over the world. It is especially reprehensible when children are sold into prostitution for the benefit of pedophiles. This happens in every country. In the US, middle school girls are kidnapped, turned out, and told they must cooperate or their families will be killed. Because they are children, they cooperate. Most of them are allowed to return to their families but are expected to continue to report for "work". Most of the families are unaware that any of this has occurred. The whole thing is bizarre and twisted, but it is going on. I am offended by people who defend the practice when so many of the children and women caught up in the trade were forced into it. Another practice is to hook children on drugs and then force them to use prostitution to pay for their drugs. The pimps use any and all methodologies to recruit young, fresh-faced girls who are usually innocent victims in the pimp's get rich quick schemes. Every time a man uses a prostitute he is feeding this evil trade and he should be charged as a criminal co-conspirator with the pimp. This is not harmless! This is a terrible, vile exploitation of girls and young women. If you want to visit prostitutes then tell the government to legalize the trade and protect the women who choose to engage in prostitution, but prosecute to the maximum extent those who traffic in human beings outside of the legal brothels.

I agree with many posters that this isn't even an issue. I agree with "Don-3816509" statement. I remember returning from combat operations in Somalia, the entire force were asked by our most senior leadership where we wanted to pull liberty, Philippines, Korea, or Thailand. Each person actually voted and needless to say, split decision and we ended up going to the Philippines and Thailand. The senior military leadership are just as guilty as anyone brought up on charges. Even still today, all of the whore houses in Korea aren't off limits to service members.

As for the service members being charged.... This is a joke, the big difference is an enlisted members doesn't get a fraction of the pay a SS agent receives. The sad thing is that the SS agent will still continue to receive pay, will not be demoted. In today's services an NJP on your record will limit your chances of being retained, and forget about being promoted for quite some time. Todays military is all about being politically correct and playing politics!
