Rex Michael Sherwood
A fugitive who spent five days on the run in New Mexico before dying in a weekend shootout with police left behind a vehicle containing explosives and questions about his possible links to anti-government groups, according to local authorities and published reports.
Rex Michael Sherwood, 48, was found dead Sunday in a gas station in Dulce, N.M., on the Jicarilla Apache reservation, after a gunfight with police.
It was Sherwood’s second violent confrontation with local law enforcement in a week, said Jake Arnold, a spokesman for the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office. On July 10, he exchanged gunfire with tribal police who pulled him over for failing to use his turn signal. After leading the officers on a 10-mile chase, he abandoned his Ford delivery truck and fled into the woods, Arnold said.
Sherwood resurfaced early Sunday, according to local news reports, when tribal police responding to a reported break-in at a Dulce gas station and convenience store came under fire from inside. After a lengthy standoff, during which the tribal officers were joined by state police, FBI agents and officers from other local agencies, a remote-controlled robot entered the building and detected the body of a single gunman lying on the floor.
The state medical examiner identified Sherwood through fingerprints. A statement Tuesday by the Jicarilla Apache Nation on Tuesday said that he had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound from the AK-47 assault rifle he was carrying.
KRQE-TV of Albuquerque quoted unidentified sources as saying that Sherwood was a computer expert with extreme anti-government opinions.
It also quoted the sources as saying that “homemade bombs” were found in the back of the truck he abandoned.
Arnold, the sheriff’s department spokesman, confirmed that explosives were found in the vehicle and said that Sherwood was wearing a T-shirt bearing the name of a right-wing militia group when he died.
Frank Fisher, a spokesman with the Albuquerque FBI office, declined to discuss any details of the case. In a statement, the bureau asked anyone with information on the case to phone 505 889-1300.
Jicarilla tribal police and a New Mexico state police spokesman did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

When I was trapped in Jicarilla country on my anniversary between Dulce and Lumberton a few years back, I was VERY polite to Apache people. I even brought cigarettes for a tobacco offering. but I'm ALWAYS polite to Native people, That's why I never carry guns on the Rez. I figure the LAST thing those nice folks want to see is ANOTHER WHITE MAN WITH A GUN.

Well cav, old pal. My take is that he's an out-of-stater or he'd have known better. I maintained microwave radio sites all over the state including on the Jicarilla, Ute, Navajo and Mescalero reservations. the stories I always seem to hear about former lab employees are the ones about the retired explosives experts who liked to bring their work HOME with them. there was a story out of "enough with the negative waves", Moriarity a few months ago. The guy passed and his son went to clean out his house, then wound up having to call explosives and ordnance disposal in.
It is white in my world--because I'm white. Most serial killer's profiles are: white, Christian affiliation, gun lovers--get it? The government is cracking down and it doesn't matter which Party. They've ordered 35,000 drones for surveillance of their own people. Hang on to those firearms and I guarantee you that you will be overpowered by a far superior weapon. I blame the tribal police who pulled him over in the first place as they were just looking to make a few bucks off this guy (seriously, a turn signal "violation," puhlease). They obviously put him over the edge.
Can you provide ANY link that mentions 35,000 drones, that doesn't come from some fringe anti-government website? Or that doesn't come from the typical "unnamed" source or "a friend of a friend"?

You should look at the racial makeup in our prisons of those who have murdered with a gun and the overwhelming majority are not white related to their percentages of the U.S. population. Go ahead and take a look. You got a computer, try using it to educate yourself before making stupid comments about race. I will give you a little hint as to who has the most per capita in their ethnic group. They represent only 16% of the population of this country but lead in crimes with a gun. Hmmmmmm. Interesting now isn't it.
The government needs to set an example for us all and make all firearms illegal. Only professional persons should handle firearms. This will stop the gun killings.

That is your right to not own a firearm. However, as a US citizen I invoke my 2nd ammendment right to own one. If your suggestion was true: "this will stop the gun killings" I guess if folks really want to kill someone they will find another method to do the deed. What if it was done with a baseball bat? Would you recommend making baseball bats illegal? I enjoy baseball and that would infringe on another of my rights!
Perhaps you are a person that wants to join IANSA? If so, that too is your right. The purpose of a free country is no infringement of rights for persons who have not committed any crime. Or do you desire to implement only those rights you think are bad?

It appears like you're making a trolling type of statement . I posted a similar statement a few weeks back about gun ownership and got quite a response .
I really believe that people should have a right to decide if they choose to own firearms or not. I'll use my 2nd ammendment right to own a fire arm ( or as many as I choose to own) .
Those who attempt to create an argument about abolishing gun ownership refuse to accept that others have a different view ,,,,and the reasons are just as valid

Sov-man you should turn off the t.v. for a while and join the real world. If guns were taken away from everyone except 'professional people' that would leave a populous of sheep awaiting shearing-not just the street crooks but the ones in washington that have elevated to an elite class beyond the laws that they wrote. Look it up, if you can turn off Gilligan's Island re-runs- the average politician in washington is a millionaire within two years of joining the 'public servant' steak and lobster set.

I don't see in the article where it is stated that he is white. The photo may make him look white but that doesn't mean he isn't an Indian. I would have to say that he most likely is a mix. And it doesn't matter what blood line he comes from the man was disturbed and is a mirror reflection on how so many tribes are feeling. The REZ in western New York is under constant bombardment from the State Police for selling cigarettes (the one thing that brings in a good amount for the tribe) But they just keep harassing the Indians. The rest of America is getting tired of the government crap as well.

There's this study on privileged disparities, maybe you should look it up. If the cops spend most of their time focusing on minorities, of course they'll find more criminals. If the cops would spend more time focusing on just the white population, I'll bet the demographics of the prison population would change as well. But I guess you don't have to worry about all that if you can't even see your own unearned privileges for just being white.

Those definitions are incorrect.
Even varmint rifles have detachable magazines (even rotary ones).
And some field rifles (saddle rifles have folding stocks.
Pistol grips are NOT even close.
Those can be found on a lot of home defense weapons, (Winchester Defender for example).
NONE are considered assault weapons.
I have an SKS with a folding bayonet AND a grenade launcher.
IT is not considered by the ATF as an assault weapon.

I have a great idea. Why don't we make a new condition law. The condition being all gun owners must spend a week in a secluded fenced off place in a forest or desert big enough to hold some numbers similarly filled like our old military draft. Make this a requirement to renew their licenses. One week and see how many either shoot themselves by accident. On purpose. Shoot someone else by accident or on purpose. blow each other up over an argument. I'm sure you have the picture. I'm sure you have more than the picture. You will see a picture of percentage. How many people should owns guns. How many people hide behind guns for there cowardice and how many people are so afraid and tired of being ripped off and beaten they will shoot back? By anti-gun definition, any gun is an assault weapon. Any thing can be an assault weapon when it is used as a weapon to assault someone. Assault bat, assault knife, assault shoe, etc.
Good points 51msg. The other day I just heard about someone getting arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and the incident was a fist fight. Maybe the guy was a known MMA expert, but it sounds like an overzealsous DA if you ask me.
There are way too many people in the ignorance pool. Do some research people before spouting off at the mouth. For the love of all that have brain cells left, do the research. Check the statistics on firearm issues, deaths, misuse, etc. Then come back and make an educated response. Seriously, my brain hurts every time I read ignorant postings.
I feel bad for those of you that have been sheltered enough to believe that if firearms were outlawed, the bad guy/gals/threats would be less. That there would be less firearm related assaults or robberies. Last time I checked, and I check all of the time because I teach this stuff, the "threats" do not purchase their firearms legally. So by disarming the average firearm owner you are ultimately putting yourself into harms way. Look at it like this:
-Police are a phone call away
-Phone call means response of 3 minutes to 30 minutes in some cases
-Shootings occur quickly and threats run even quicker
-Main goal of a threat: in and out quickly getting what they want and not get caught
-without firearm you become the victim
But then you probably would complain, stomp your feet and cry that the police never helped you

With firearm, someone would have a fighting chance to save your pathetic life by putting theirs on the line to save the innocent people around you all in a threatening situation. Once again, I am sure you would then cry and stomp your feet about how that person, by saving your life, gave you PTSD. There is a special place for people like you that act like this.

There's more to the story before you pass judgement. This guy refused to stop or yield at a bridge construction site and attempted to force his way through flagged traffic. He was pulled over, jumped out and opened fire before running off into rough terrain. When he atttempted to steal food and supplies while armed with a Kalashnikov AK-47 he was corned and took the chickenshizzle way out after shooting in a populated area. Good riddance to trash.

How come nobody talks about the reported 1.88 million a year would be victims which had to use a legal firearm for justified defense. Is it ok for these law abiding people to have been harmed by criminals? You cannot outlaw criminality .The authorities have repeatedly failed in this regard. Laws do not stop crime they are meant to be a deterrent. Criminals do not respect laws, get it clear. Also police come after the crime has been committed . You and I have a right to defend ourselves ,family, and others .
Also i may not like what many say but I RESPECT YOUR RIGHT TO DO SO. RESPECT MINE! RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION AND BILL OF RIGHTS THEY EXIST TOGETHER FOR A REASON.
police are not there to protect the individual. They are there to maintain conditions that are conducive to a safe environment. It is up to the individual to protect themselves.
To prevent a crime, don't become a victum. If that includes having or carrying a gun. Then so be it. And if you choose not to, I won't be voting to make you do it. (kind of like the idea of you voting to take away my right)
Be glad that the police are there to respond to a crime. Part fo the reason that someone can post 'u r an idiot-blah-blah-blah & cops suck' is because of, in part, their being there.

Yes. when you see a business with private security it is because there are not enough Police to curb the crime in the area. I overwhelming respect the Police and glad they almost always deal with these issues and not me. I think we need more high quality Police so that it really is the randomness of crime that slips through and not bureaucratic inefficiency.
