Trenton Mayor Tony Mack

Updated at 10 p.m. ET: FBI agents searched offices in Trenton City Hall Thursday, a day after the feds raided the home of Trenton's mayor, whose two-year administration of New Jersey's impoverished capital city has been marked by accusations of nepotism and reckless spending.

A city worker who asked not to be identified told NBC 4 New York that FBI agents were seen searching the mayor's second-floor offices and the city's economic development offices on the third floor.

"What took them so long to get here?" questioned city councilman and former police officer George Muschal. "I felt there was full-blown corruption here two years ago, and I still stand by it."

The search of City Hall comes one day after FBI agents searched the home of Trenton Mayor Tony Mack. They also searched the homes of his brother Ralphiel Mack and campaign contributor Joseph "JoJo" Giorgianni.

See the original report at NBCNewYork.com

On Wednesday morning, hours after the FBI's predawn raid of his home, Mack, 46, denied any wrongdoing.

"We have not violated the public trust nor have I violated any of my public duties and that's all I have to say on the matter," he said.

No arrests have been made and an FBI spokeswoman declined to comment, except to confirm searches are underway in connection with an ongoing investigation. A spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman also declined to comment.

Mack's administration has been in turmoil from his first day, staggering from one crisis to another. A housecleaning of staff at City Hall opened the door for Mack's own appointees, who quickly turned it into a revolving door. Some left over questions about their credentials, others to face criminal charges.

Under an agreement reached last year, the Democrat can only hire department heads from a pool of applicants the state offers or he risks losing $6 million in state aid.

A citizens' group last year failed to get enough signatures to force a recall election.

Muschal accused Mack of doling out no-bid deals to contractors and said accounting was so poor the city couldn't afford to refill two pools.

Times of Trenton report

"The administration doesn't show," he said. "They don't want to meet with us."

In Mack's first year in office in Trenton, a city of 85,000, he ran through a string of business administrators. The first resigned after a month, saying the mayor didn't believe in "good government." Another resigned just ahead of pleading guilty to embezzlement at another job.

Mack's housing director quit after it emerged that he had a theft conviction. His chief of staff was arrested trying to buy heroin. His half-brother, whose authority he elevated at the city water plant, was arrested on charges of stealing.

Questions have also been raised about how he financed his campaign for mayor.

A former longtime city employee sued the mayor late last year. The parks department employee said she was let go after refusing to dole out jobs for the mayor's friends, refusing to give federal grant money to people who didn't apply and for inquiring about city funds she said were missing.

The ex-employee also said she was replaced by a Mack supporter who never showed up for his $40,000-a-year job.

A former campaign aide told NBC 4 New York said he disassociated with Mack when he "saw the way he was going."

"This is not a surprise," Jerell Blakley said of the probe into Mack's activities. "A lot of people in Trenton were of the opinion -- not of if, but when."

@plsthink90 - Unfortunately it's not just the Republicans that spend recklessly any longer. The Dems do it almost as much, if not the same.

At this point, the only hope is to vote out both parties and get some 3rd parties in there. But that probably won't happen any time soon. We'll just have to deal with the GOP and now the Dem's reckless spending and abuse.

why stop at NJ? head on down to DC and start the investigation there also!

you could have substituted president for mayor all over the place and it would have been the truth.

what did this guy do that the president hasnt done already?

kill a border patrol agent, use tax dollars to go to fund raisers around the coountry (yea sure they were "official events"), circumvent the constitution, kill the private sector, hell this guy was trying to give people jobs, maybe cousin "pookie", as our dork and chief like to spout, but an employeed person none the less.

actually, Michele, while I acknowledge that there are problems in both parties, I have lived in NJ my entire life and it is extremely rare to hear about a republican politician being investigated by the FBI. It is, however, almost every day news to read about yet another democratic politician being convicted of corruption charges. I am sick and tired of the BS rhetoric that both parties are the same. It's just not true and in fact, it's intellectually lazy for people to claim they are. By claiming that both parties are the same, people relieve themselves of the necessity of paying attention to what's really going on, reading between the lines, analyzing the facts and coming to a conclusion. It also relieves people of the necessity of getting involved, calling their representatives and telling them what they expect from them. How convenient for you.

Both parties are indeed corrupt and out of touch with the average citizen. Calling it like it is, is not laziness. Blind allegiance to a political party is lazy. It is also intellectually lazy to assume that someone who is critical of both parties doesn't read between the lines, analyse facts, come to conclusions, get involved, etc. Where did you come up with that?

I would happily educate myself further grilledcheese if it was remotely possible to get the truth without spending hours, days, weeks studying/researching. Some people do not have the kind of time that takes let alone the inclination. No, I don't wish to be ignorant of what's going on in this country, but I have a home and husband and full time job and I will freely admit that I have no desire to become a political science major. If that is intellectually lazy, so be it. So yes from the perspective of an average citizen, both parties suck. Neither has done anything that I can think of in an remotely recent time period to improve ...well anything significant. I've seen them both play all of the same games, twist the truth, make promises that are not kept and show themselves to be disgusting hypocrits. If you know of a source that cuts through all that bs and where one could actually educate themselves on the facts, please do share. Lastly, the assumption that someone who thinks both parties suck is not involved or communicating their wishes to those in elected office is just that...an assumption.

The Republican agenda is to dismantle government and outsource its interests to private corporations, who in turn hides these profits in overseas accounts.

So, how far are we to take this libertarian economic philosophy and what will we accomplish.

Attitudes like this, if turns out to be Nepotism et al. makes the Ayn Rand agenda stronger. In the end, the very FBI who is investigating this corruption, will see a disbandment of itself, replaced by a Private Security Agency owned by a group of secretive rich people.

Not saying George Orwell did not warn us of this possibility.

GriiledCheeseSandwich-

No, the parties are not the same. Clearly, the philosophical foundations are near opposites. Large government offering all kinds of individual entitlements vs. small government relying more on self-reliance. Free markets vs. highly regulated markets.

Politicians, however, tend to be similar. Most tend to be self-serving. There are exceptions, but these are rare.

Having said that, what we have is almost universal apathetic voters. We are quick to bad mouth the politicians. Yet, we often do not even bother to vote. And certainly, we are even less inclined to offer to serve as a candidate for public office. How to these folks get elected? It is simple. With the immense amount of apathy, it only takes a few cronies to get someone elected. That is the crux of the problem.

Will it change. It better.

DingleB, you're right. I grew up in N.J. in the '50s and '60s, left for 4 years of military service, came back and stayed until '98 when I finally left due to high taxes, car insurance etc. Everybody was working some sort of angle and always had their hand out. It wasn't confined to just one political party or ethnic group. Grilledcheese, maybe, just maybe you don't hear more about Repuglican politicians being investigated is because they aren't as blatant about their corruption as some of the Dumbocrats and were able to get away with it. Maybe they're somewhat more intelligent and hide it better, but to think that they aren't corrupt also is keeping your head buried in the sand, or someplace else. Blind allegiance to ANYTHING is not a good thing. An open mind will accomplish more than the closed one.

Give Mack a few more years and he will have this Democrat thing figured out, Rule No#1 don't get caught, Rule #2 always have a Republican to point your finger at and cast blame in every direction except yourself, he almost has rule 2 down, Rule #3 never admit failing, rule#4 spend spend spend and when you have spent it all get some more. he understands that rule. now if he gets rule#1 right he can run for president on the Democratic ticket, but first he will have to say he didn't do it preferably while under oath, he could be another Clinton. things stuck to him too.

Don't smoke that cigar you don't know where its been.

Remember it was Pelosi and Barney that swayed Bush to not regulate the housing market, thus allowing the market crash, and they very successfully pointed their fingers at Bush as the cause that's how its supposed to work never under any circumstances take the blame yourself if there is a Republican you can pass the blame to. give Mack some time and he will get it right. and he will get votes just because he is not a conservative or a republican all he needs is the gay liberal race ticket America likes weird stuff.

Bush spent over 1.5 trillion in stimulus spending most going to banks and financial institutions. Obama spent less than 800 billion most going to states to fund jobs programs building roads, bridges etc. and to prevent massive layoffs of teachers, police and firefighters after the second worst financial collapse in history. Whose motives were the purest?

Under President George Bush’s administration, the Federal government gave $29 billion to bail out Bear Stearns, $178 billion to American taxpayers in the form of economic stimulus checks, $300 billion to bail out American homeowners, $200 billion to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, $150 billion to bailout AIG, and $700 billion to bail out banks (TARP).

Grow a pair and learn you can't have it both ways giving Bush a pass on everything and Obama on nothing shows bias but little thinking.

It happens to Democrats. Republicans most likely to steer their interests towards private capital and thus gives us Enron and Bernie Madoff, where as Democrats tend to fail within the Government itself.

We need both good governance and private business practices for ourselves to function at its best. A complete takeover by a libertarian system that some a vying for, will eventually lead to one heck of a bloody revolution and the possibility of a strong Socialist system.

Perfect example why you should have to pass an IQ test to qualify to vote and a lie detector test to run for any public office.

Gary, ah yes he did. He gave jobs to all his corrupt relatives. So outsourcing his corruption is exactly what he did. nice try, thanks for playing.

watt, better change that light bulb, you're a bit dim...witted that is, as usual. Nepotism runs in both party lines, but you obviously can't handle that byte of information without imploding.

Fantomdog, this is an extreme case. All of the recent ones have been from (D).

Unless you can show something similar from a Republican?

HA! I bet that woman behind the security desk didn't have much to sing about when federal agents barged in. She can obstruct the free press all she wants (i.e. singing to NBC10's Lu Ann Cahn in order to deter any questions about that mayor scum), but those tactics won't work on a federal warrant! Good for them.

I live in a small town NJ and they don't call it the Soprano state for nothing. When Christie did his initial sweep of crooks, we lost a Boro Council Member AND the mayor. A year later they got the mayor's brother. Just another day in paradise.

"still" begs the questions that it ever was. An organization that was initiated by a cross-dressing ego-maniac that went to extremes to crucify those he opposed and those who opposed him don't conjure images of honesty and dependability.
