Police: 'Sophisticated' booby traps in Colorado shooting suspect's apartment

Colorado shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes booby-trapped his apartment with wires and incendiary devices. Bomb experts are trying to figure out the best way to proceed so that they can search the apartment without triggering an explosion. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Updated at 8:00 p.m. ET: A law enforcement official said that authorities were facing a challenge in seeking to disarm what appears to be sophisticated explosive booby traps in the apartment of a suspected mass shooter in suburban Denver, NBC News' Pete Williams reported Friday afternoon.

Buildings around the four-story Aurora, Colo., apartment building where James Eagan Holmes lived were evacuated Friday after he said he had explosives in his apartment, police said. Holmes is suspected of opening fire at a midnight premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises," police said. The shooting left 12 dead and 59 others injured.

FBI agents and police used a hook-and-ladder fire truck to reach Holmes' one-bedroom apartment on the third floor, said Oates. By hoisting a camera at the end of a 12-foot pole through a window, officers were able to get a view inside.

Those familiar with what's inside said it's a jumble of apparent trip wires, bottles of liquid and containers of ammunition, fireworks and powders.

"As a layman, it's not something I've ever seen before," said Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates, who added that police were expected to remain on the scene "for hours or days."

There's no way to be certain that the booby traps were genuine, but law enforcers were operating on the assumption that they were, in part because of recent unspecified purchases made by Holmes, NBC News' Williams reported.

Suspect James Eagan Holmes reportedly never said a word while allegedly shooting 71 people and killing 12 in a sold-out showing for Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises." Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper said it was "the act of a very deranged mind." NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

The use of trip wires and bottles of liquids suggested a setup that would cause mixing of chemicals that spontaneously ignite, said Carl Knowlen, senior researcher in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Washington.

The agents might include nitric acid and sulphuric acid, which are readily available in chemical supply stores, he said.

"When mixed with many common substances (these chemicals) spontaneously ignite on contact," he said. "That would be an excellent incendiary source to light off propellants," which could include gun powder or ammunition.

"He had an organic chemistry background and all of these combinations would be familiar to him," said Knowlen. "He may also have known how to formulate it from the diluted stuff you would get at a hardware store."

Law enforcers were moving cautiously for safety reasons and in the effort to preserve as much evidence as possible — things like computers, notebooks and papers that could shed light on Holmes motive and planning.

Authorities still hadn't entered the apartment Friday evening.

"We’re trying to determine how to disarm the flammable or explosive materials in there," FBI Agent James F. Yacone said earlier Friday. "The pictures are pretty disturbing as far as how sophisticated it is. This could be a very long wait."

Yacone said that more than 100 FBI agents were involved in the investigation, as well as personnel from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which combines the resources of federal, state and local agencies.

"At this point, we do not see a nexus to terrorism," Yacone said.

Holmes, 24, was arrested behind the Aurora theater. Police said he had two handguns, a shotgun and an assault rifle, at least three of which they believe were used in the attack.

Oates said that Holmes had made a statement to officers about explosives in his apartment. Oates said Holmes also claimed to have explosives in his car, which was parked at the theater, but that proved to be false.

Police evacuated five buildings around Holmes building, starting at about 6 a.m. MT, reported NBC News contributor Bill Briggs, who was on the scene.

After barely escaping a mall shooting last month, aspiring sports reporter Jessica Ghawi did not survive the theater shooting. Her brother spoke to reporters about her remarkable spirit. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

Darnell Woods was returning from his overnight shift at a local Home Depot at 6 a.m. and had been in his third-floor apartment across the street from Holmes' building for just a few minutes when he was ordered outside by police.

"They said that we had to get out because they didn't know if his building was going to explode," said Woods, who was sitting on a curb in the hot morning sun, a half block south of Holmes' building on Paris Street. He said he had been perched on that spot since for three and a half hours. He was sweating and wondering when he could return to his apartment.

Holmes had lived in the Aurora apartment building since about May 2011, the Denver Post reported, citing records.

Holmes apartment had always been quiet, according to other tenants in the apartment who spoke to KUSA reporter Jeremy Jojola, so they found it strange when, between midnight and 1 a.m. MT on Friday, there was loud techno music blasting from the apartment.

He was a graduate student in the neuroscience program at the University of Colorado Medical School, a university spokesman told NBC News. He was in the process of withdrawing from school, the university confirmed.

A genius monster. Could definitely been a lot worse had he decided to imitate the suicide bomber in Bulgaria and go in with a backpack instead of a firearm. Where do these turds spawn from? Beyond words...a lot of people's lives ruined forever by one maggot.

I have never purchased a gun, never owned a gun. Why would I need one? If I need to carry a gun with me all the time, then this country is truly too dangerous for everyone to live in without firearms. Should we all rush out and buy guns today?

Someone who buys a gun intends to use it eventually. He believes the opportunity will present itself to use that gun. George Zimmerman bought a gun for whatever reason and wore it daily. He wouldn't have bought it unless he believed he would have a reason to use it someday. His having the gun helped create the situation that led to the death of a teen and put him in a legal situation. If he hadn't had that gun, he probably would not have been enboldened to follow the teenager; he would have stayed in his car and let the police, who are trained to investigate such matters, to handle the "suspicious black man."

Usually, the members of the criminal element can accurately be described as 'not too smart'. Unfortunately, it would seem Mr. Holmes is a nonconformist. There is, however, something else that can be said of many criminals - they're angry. They're angry at something, or everything, and they're lashing back. This is probably the underlying motive.

I have never purchased a gun, never owned a gun. Why would I need one?

If you've got to ask that, then you probably shouldn't have one. But, otherwise, that is a question that everyone who asks has to answer for themselves. I can tell you you should get one for only one reason: you're in a job where you're required to carry one in the line of duty and I'm your boss! I can tell you not to have one for one reason: You're legally prohibited from having one and I'm a law enforcement officer who can arrest you for breaking some federal, state, or local law. Outside of that, a person can only make a suggestion or recommendation as to what someone else could or should do.

Someone who buys a gun intends to use it eventually.

Uh, sure. You'd better define 'use', though, in making that assertion. It means different things, if you're a hunter, a professional who carries a weapon, a recreational or competitive shooter, a collector, or anything else. If you collect historical firearms, then just buying one and taking it home to place it in your vault probably qualifies as 'using' it, if you were never planning to fire it anyway...

KeenInsight is an idiot - most law abiding gun owners carry a gun with the hope that they never have to use it. Same thing with a fire extinguisher - you have at least one in your house, even though the fire department is just a short trip away. I hope to never have to use mine, but it's there in case it's needed.

What I want to know is where you can find a Home Depot that is open overnight. It says the neighbor was returning from an overnight shift at Home Depot at 6 A.M.

I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to repair a sink or build a fence at 3 A.M. and the home improvement stores were all closed.

I don't think anyone ever said they were open for business. My guess is that there was an overnight stock crew that worked from 10-6. I used to work those hours doing that years ago.

You gotta wonder if maybe this guy was possessed by a demon which left him once the rampage in the theatre was over.

If he took that much effort to set up a trap in his apartment, why would he tell anyone, unless he suddenly lost the desire for death.

Some things can only be explained as a result of pure evil being in the world.

El_Duderino, Home Depot as well as most big box retailers have a crew of night stockers and unloading trucks. It's the best way to stock the shelves without getting the customers way. At Home Depot and Lowe's, pallet loads of merchandise is offloaded onto the sales floor at night. Same as grocery stores.

They should bring in military EOD to help with disarming the booby traps in the guy's apartment, they definitely have experience defusing IEDs. The guy is obviously disturbed to do what he has done. That said, I hope he does not escape punishment for his actions with some slick lawyer and an insanity defense. This guy deserves to be executed for what he has done, and quickly. It should not be allowed to drag on for a decade or more of appeals and legal maneuvers, prolonging the pain of the victims as well as their friends and families.

Hey Derp--that's exactly what I was thinking... The cops catch him and he tells them he has explosives in his apartment. Kinda makes me wonder if he was demon-possessed, but I try to stay away from that stuff. It makes sense though. This guy gave himself over to pure evil.

Our countrymen did not fight, through their lives, the Wars of the World for guys like this, but for men who loves his neighbor and wishes peace and prosperity upon them.

As far as the whole gun topic goes... well he didn't just use guns to kill people. He used chemicals, gas, and bullet proof gear. This is not about guns but about an evil man who decided to murder a large group of Americans. And then booby-trap his home with explosives! This is not normal. This man does not represent responsible gun owners--he is most unfit to own a gun. Unfortunately it was too late by the time we figured out what he was planning. I am curious how he acquired the bullet-proof gear and the chemicals without drawing attention to himself. I want to know how he 'withdrew' from school. I hope that next time if someone attempts to do something similar we will notice the signs.

There's a significant difference between a legal responsible gun owner and a guy who suddenly acquires a large amount of ammunition and a handful of guns in a short period of time along with explosive chemicals and bullet-proof gear.

And FYI... I keep hearing media say he used an Assault rifle. The AR-15 is not an assault rifle. It is unable to be switched to a fully-automatic mode such as the military M4 Assault rifle. We should all be aware that a healthy .30-06 rifle shot to his face would not have felt good and if we were to ban guns we would have no way to fight back. Even though he may have been using bullet-proof gear he was not invincible and would eventually succumb to a doom he brought upon himself for this evil act ...by our guns and weapons.

Yeah a freaking genius. What did he do ? Develop a new technique of killing people, new weaponry, new strategies ? Did he set a record ? He will maybe be a footnote in history because of the people he killed- because they died- not because of anything he contributed. Holmes is a loser with a capital L. He's left nothing behind of value.

Can someone tell me why we don’t have the death penalty for people like this?

Eventually after a great expense, he will be convicted (unless he plead insane and gets off), and then
he will have free room, board, meals and insurance for the rest of his live.
Eventually, he’ll have cable TV too.

let's just say, raven, that aside from it costing more to execute the scum (as opposed to keeping him alive in prison - which is about the ONLY reason to NOT snuff the trash - THE COST OF GETTING THE EXECUTION VETTED) eliminating him is the FINALITY of the situation. NEVER any more need to worry about a possible escape and recurrence of another "action".

Manson did get the death penalty but his sentence was changed.

Manson's death sentence was automatically commuted to life imprisonment when a 1972 decision by the Supreme Court of California temporarily eliminated the state's death penalty. California's eventual reinstatement of capital punishment did not affect Manson, who is currently incarcerated at Corcoran State Prison.

I tend to think that the word "terrorist" has become associated with far more than it used to be.

Nowadays, any attack against a group of innocent civilians seems to be called terrorism.

But from what I understand, terrorism was originally a strategy carried out by small, organized groups. The goal being to terrorize the populace through violence in order to affect political change. The key components being 1) an organized, coherent group with goals and a plan for achieving them, 2) deadly violence targeted against "soft" or civilian targets, 3) intent to cause massive amounts of fear, 4) using that fear as a tool for political ends.

In a way, I think calling "mass murder" an act of terrorism is just inaccurate. 9/11 was terrorism. One nutcase with a gun is just a nutcase with a gun.

I agree. People need to stop fueling the false fire. It is possible to "feel" terrorized by someone who is not a terrorist. For example, any parent with a 2 or 3 year old should know this feeling quite well.

Terrorism is about one group trying to affect change into another group by strategical use of fear.

This case is strange in many ways. The suspect is well educated and apparently very intelligent. He has no serious arrest record. He surrenders peacefully, and he tells the police that his apartment is booby trapped. None of this seems to fit the usual pattern. I'm sure as more information comes out, some reason behind the shootings will emerge.

This is some kind of weird heartless game for him, so he wants the investigators to appreciate his artistry. He also tells them that his car is booby trapped, but it is not- so sometimes he lies to them. Maybe the apartment stuff does not even work- who knows? But either way, he is playing mind games with the police. Somehow this is cute and special for him.

He told them there were explosives in his apartment. If there is potential for explosives, they don't just break down the door because they don't know how the explosives are rigged. Instead, they do stuff like use cameras to get a visual before entering.

I am so glad they caught this guy before he got back home. There are only two reasons to booby trap the place like that. 1. He planned to end this by going home, opening the door, and dying in a massive explosion. or 2. He planned to let the police find out who he was, kick the door in and be greeted by a massive explosion. Either way, a lot of lives were saved.

The entire situation is a nightmare and I pray for the families and people directly involved in this. As far as wondering how the police found out about the traps, either he told them, he had something written down and on him when he was caught, or they tested his hands and clothing for explosive residue just in case and found some. I'm guessing getting caught wasn't in his plans and when it happened he told them. Or this guy thinks he is a Batman villain so the only thing to do when caught was to burst out into a diatribe that somehow gave away the details of his incredibly elaborate plan. Which, in this case, is entirely possible.

I would make him go inside his own apartment and see what happens. Or maybe just a firing squad. Why wait. There is no justification, period.

He apparently told the police officers that apprehended him outside that he had explosives in his apartment. This was a very well thought out plan and he was cool and calm and cooperated with the police upon his arrest. A very disturbed person.

Bottom line, regardless of the NRA lobby, we need stricter gun laws so mentally unbalanced people can't get their hands on guns. And I would go even further. No handguns, or at the least no extended mags for anyone other than military and police. Sportsmen can buy rifles for hunting (including shotguns for protection if they want), but no assault rifles. We need some common sense restrictions on gun ownership. Gun laws in this country are as dumb as Grover Norquist's pledge of no new taxes ever. Enough is enough.

Actually if there weren't gun laws that were so strict, someone carrying a firearm in the theater could have shot this guy and stopped him before he got so many victims. There are two sides to this coin and you can't see just 1 side of it. Guns don't kill people, other people make a choice to kill. I can kill someone with a pencil, should we ban those too? You can use a razor blade to kill someone, that is 9th grade science. Just slice the bracial artery in the arm and in 10-15 seconds they are dead. The guns aren't the problems, the strict laws prohibiting our right to bear arms anywhere is. They have such strict laws that those who are law abiding live in fear of those who aren't and have machine guns and assault rifles illegally and then the rest of us are left with no way to defend ourselves. Do you realize if you lie on your foodstamp application you've commited a felony and can't have a gun legally? Over fraud? Yet a drug dealer who has never been caught can freely own one. Where does that make any sense? People have it all backwards. Trust me if every person in this country were allowed to carry a gun walking down the street without limits on stature or permits or law there would be a lot less thugs willing to try to test their limits on rape, murder, robbery and assault. Think about that.

Nikki, guns just make the killing way easier than pencils, way too one sided. In my opinion, a person who carries a loaded gun into a movie theater (or most any other public place) out of fear there might be crazies or bad guys in there just may be a little unbalanced themselves.

I'm not ok with banning guns, but putting a distance between hot headed crazies and guns is not a bad idea.

I have thought about this and I do not agree. What?-409970 alludes to the frightening possibility of an all out fire fight in a crowded theater. It may well be the case that some of the patrons had guns with them and wisely did not use them because they were not sure of what was going on until it was all over. Or they were too busy ducking for cover.

In any event, we will never have EVERYBODY in this country carrying gun, and probably not even a majority of the people. I hope we never see the day when all the "law abiding" people who can carry guns start to bully and intimidate the rest of us, like get served first in restaurants, jump waiting and checkout lines, get the best parking spots or seats at the movies. Their kids might get to be the starters on the basketball and football teams. Think about that.

If a person wants a gun they will get it , no matter how strict gun laws are. The gun laws only truely affect those who follow the law. Us the law abiding citizens who follow all the laws are the ones who get punished for someone who clearly is genius and mentally unstable. He thought this whole thing through , look at the bomb he had at his apartment. Do you actually think some gun laws would have stopped someone hell bent on killing people.

The only problem I see with this policy is that here is a guy who has never been in trouble with the law (only a "minor" traffic violation that we know of so far. he was obviously intelligent enough to get into a PhD medical program at age 24, and there is no reported histroy thus far of psychiatric illness. How would he have been weeded out or prevented from buying a weapon? Gun control laws wil not prevent this type of activity. The problem in this country is not the gun control laws, it is the fact that we have a subset of people with little to no moral barometer, who have no respect for people's lives or property. until we correct that, there is no reason to think that keeping a gun out of their hands legally will prevent something like this. he could just easily opened the door and thrown in a bomb, or walked in with one strapped to his chest.

Putting say 2 months of time in between applying for and receiving a gun WILL put some time to settle down in between incidents that peeve a young person and receipt of a gun. When people say it's easy to get an illegal gun, maybe it is so for some circles but I wouldn't have a clue where to start looking. And even that, puts some distance between. Putting a limit on how many guns a person can own may be an option also. Also, we could put some time between purchasing ammo. I'll bet that while the guns may have been illegal, the ammo probably wasn't.

For us to throw up our hands and say that they'll get them anyways is kind of a crazy response to gun control. We need to do something.

It doesn't sound like gun laws would've helped in this situation. The cops already said his record consisted of a "minor traffic violation." Gun stores run background checks, not psychiatric evaluations. Maybe more help for the mentally ill could've done something...but sometimes regular people snap & no one sees it coming.

Many things bother me about this horrific tragedy that happened 2 blocks from my home but none of the news has mentioned how this is a largely African American community compared to the rest of the state. When he attacked that theatre I am sure he knew he would be hitting mostly an African American / Latino population. Why is this young adult able to obtain Glocks, rifles, gear, and tear gas Legally within days with no mental evaluation? People sit on the sidelines of gun control laws and our children pay for it. You try to protect your children but some angry man with a gun can walk into their school or theatre and take them away forever.

If the guy never showed any signs of mental problems-how would any new gun laws have prevented him from getting a gun?

We do NOT need more gun laws-what we need is to first enforce the 2500+ gun laws already on the books-then make the penalty for committing a crime with a gun something like a 15 year minimum sentence-with no plea bargaining, and no early release.

Do those two things, and the number gun crimes would drop very quickly.

The old cliche of guns don't kill be people kill people is really stupid. Sad to say that gun advocates and the NRA are not going to express sympathy to these families. I agree too many gun laws around the individual states and everyone hates the federal government because they are taking your rights away. How about dumbing the laws down to either no assualt weapons to private citizens becaue they are for killing only and the military and police are the ones that need them or we go to the proper buying, registering and storing of the weapons. ie. A gun club.

This guy had every intent of killing people so insanity is not going to work. I am sure a excuse will be made and the masses against more or changes to the law will be up in arms. This crap has got to stop.

"Sad to say that gun advocates and the NRA are not going to express sympathy to these families"

WRONG. The NRA already did express their sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families-

wisely stating that they had no further comment until more facts are known.

"no assualt weapons to private citizens becaue they are for killing only"

An "assault weapon" is a fully automatic weapon-which this shooter did NOT have, very, very few civilians are permitted to own fully automatic firearms-it is much more difficult, and the background check is more detailed than for a rifle, shotgun or handgun purchases.

The gun this shooter used,as reported by the local police was a type of semi-auto A-K 47.

The most popular semi-auto rifle-often mistakenly referred to as an assault rifle is the A-R platform rifle-it is semi-auto,and is used in shooting competitions, and for hunting all over the U.S.

The 2nd amendment gaurantees the right to keep and bear arms-that does NOT mean storing them at a "gun club".

That right is an INDIVIDUAL right.

Mexico has some of the most restrictive gun laws of any country-and the highest rate of gun crimes-those gun crimes are not being committed with guns purchased in the U.S.-they are being committed using fully automatic, military grade weapons...gun control/gun laws do not work-never have, never will.

Wait a minute. This is a classic terrorist event. We need to get out of the mind set that "terrorist" only means muslim.

Where are his room mates? Why no mention of their names? Why no comments from them?

Where did he get such sophisticated explosives?

The guns are not the story here. You can get guns any where. The explosives are the story.

"sophisticated explosives" ?? uh, the guy has a degree in organic chemistry. He could make some pretty effective things with household cleaners and stuff from Home Depot. It's not that difficult.

How about they place the suspect inside his apartment ------ before they detonate whatever bomb he planted there. Save the taxpayers a lot of $$$$$$'s.

My prayers to families and the state of Colorado that the citizens don't have to go through this anymore.

Those of you who have done something like this or thinking about doing this cause you hate the world or what ever reason - go live in the mountains some where or take your own life. I hate to even tell someone to take their life but really if it saves others then that would be the best for all of us. Including your families.

WOW!, what a surprise. Not an ilegal inmigrant, no muslims. All of this type of attacks are made by US all american kid product, same as in Ridge, Waco, Columbine, Oklahoma City etc..etc.. plus the unique psycho serial killers also US all american citizens carry out. It desmitifies that "illegal" inmigrants are the root of all problems, which by the way, only if you are Native Americans, all your grandparents, fathers, were "illegal" inmigrants at one point. I dont remember the pilgrims asking natives permission to come in to their land...oh right... they just killed them all. Way to go American Culture.

As for the comment of "the pilgrims not asking permission to come here" that is bull and if you payed any attention in US History class, you would know that. As for all "grandparents, fathers," being illegal immigrants, that's bull too. My great-grandparents came over from Italy and went through Ellis Island and got their citizenship LEGALLY. They did't run across some border, hiding out from police or border patrol, only to steal what's rightfully ours!!!! If you want to see what illegal immigration is doing to our country, go look up some information on the US governments website, instead of making uninformed statements.

Maybe you should do some actual research on Ruby Ridge-after the ATF set up Randy QWeaver for something he did not do,and after he was not notified of a court date-the FBI, U.S. Marshalls, and ATF caused a standoff, killed his wife and son,the wife as she was holding a baby-the Weavers, and their friend who shot a U.S. marshall sued in fed. court-and WON.

Funny how the same FBI sniper was at both Waco and Ruby Ridge-and disobeyed orders, and started shooting at both places- Lon Hourichi (sp)-look that up prior to posting such BS.
