Here's the deal. In any missing childrens' scenario, it is incumbent upon law enforcement to treat every "gone missing" children as the worst possible scenario; i.e. as an abduction. This is not overkill; it is the prudent and proper thing to do, as we see time and time again. At least early in the investigation no Amber Alert was issued. If one has been issued, it's my bad, but not totally. An Amber Alert should have been alarmed in the first 48 hours or sooner. Time is the most critical thing to consider. Usually within 72 hours of an abduction a large percentage of the children have already been killed. The law enforcement in this case has dropped the ball, big-time. They are still talking about using sonar at a lake! If there has been an abduction, the perp has had plenty of time to disappear. This police work is of the worst kind. When was the FBI called in? They can be involved immediately if there is ANY reason to believe the children may have crossed state lines. Obviously there is probable cause to think that ths might be the case. And, with the parent's checkered pasts with drug related arrests, there is another scary dimension involved. If the parents were involved in a botched drug deal, a truly wired, awake for 5 days meth head is capable of ANYTHING. Meth is actually more dangerous than heroin; you don't know how high the maker was when brewing up a batch, and what he stepped on (substances to allow a bigger batch to be made) and some are extremely toxic. I was a party animal in college, married when I was 31, and as the children came, it was time to settle down. The adage is You take drugs, they don't take you!! Sadly, people don't understand this. Some people are too stupid to live..........

If someone kidnapped these two girls, I would think they would have taken the bikes and their purses with them, tossed the cell phones in another location to throw people off the trail.

As for the sheriff of that town. They really need to get a new one. That man is a dumbazz letting people going in and out of that park after they came up missing. And instead of this sheriff doing all these breaking news interviews on tv all the time, spend more time searching for these two kids and less time yapping about what you don't know about.

As for the parents... Why the hell aren't parents paying attention to their kids and monitoring them a lot better. You do not let two little girls go biking away from your home as the sun is beginning to set.

Amber alerts are not issued for every missing child. They are only issued for known abduction cases, and I believe it is only in the first 24 hours (not positive on that last bit). This is because they want people to pay attention to Amber alerts, and unless they have information on the abductor (looks, what they're wearing, car they're driving...anything), they won't issue one. So this case, unfortunately didn't meet the criteria. I do hope these girls are found, and they are well...but it sounds like these parents have a lot in their own lives to clean up. Sad.

I can't say how I would react in this situation, it has got to be difficult to endure being accused of hurting your kids, but it seems like if they would just cooperate they can finish investigating the parents (and I'm sorry but all too often the parents were involved) so they can focus on finding the real suspect. I know there are bad cops out there, but it seems like if they're pressing them hard, more than the normal amount, then maybe there is something that is pointing to the parents and it seems like refusing to cooperate can only hurt them further.

I dont think its the puplics business to know about the family's personal problems. What should be focused on is the girls. Just because a person has made a mistake and used drugs don't mean that they dont love their children. Who knows they could have sent the kids on a bike ride so they could do their drugs. Its very unfortunate that parents have to go through loosing their children and then to know someone has their children and the police wont go look in the right direction and just want to focus on their mistakes and wrong doings. The childrens safety should not be jeprodized because of the parents mistakes. it sounds like they have more problems than most and need to know that the police are there to help them not judge them at a time like this. The girls should not be punished because of their parents past. they deserve to be looked for like any other child in these unfortunate cases. It's sad that valuable time is lost on finding them do to T.V. interviews and small minded law enforcement that want to focus on something other than the true crime that has taken place. I hope that the girls are found soon and I will be praying for their safe return. We all need to remember the cases that the parents were focused on and new leads were never followed do to that and time was lost finding the real criminals.

the parents still should not have stopped cooperating with the police. The longer the cops focus on them, the longer it will take for them to look into other leads..... that is, if the parents are truly not responsible.

When a person of interest stops talking and lawyers-up, detectives are always convinced they have the right guy. If your story doesn't change and you don't look afraid to be investigated then that is discouraging to a cop who is trying to nail you.

I suspect that the poster above is not an attorney. Once the police take an aggressive posture toward you (or maybe sooner) you may want to invoke your Sixth Amendment right to counsel. Many a person who didn't, found themselves wrongfully charged with a crime, usually with distorted quotes taken by police who think they are doing their job. Once the police decide they "like" you for the crime, it won't matter whether you cooperate or tell a consistent story; they will pursue you until they can get an indictment or make an arrest. Bernie, using drugs is a long ways off from taking the life of your child. Just because a person has one shortcoming (and don't we all have something?) it doesn't make them a monster. That's like saying that because someone has lost their license from too many speeding tickets is more likely to be guilty of murder - they simply aren't equal or related. Should the drug relations be investigated to ensure there's nothing in the direction of bad deals or revenge? Of course. However it doesn't automatically mean the dad is guilty over it either.

It could be possible that these people worked very hard to shelter their child from what they were doing; unlikely but possible. And although I'm sure you're absolutely positive in your own mind that you have the inside scoop, I'm less than positive about your special gift to know the truth based on internet reporting.

One example from my own life. After the 2005 kidnapping and murder of a family just outside Coeur d'Alene, the media posted photos of the mother, her fiance, and her 13 year old son--all of whom had been killed at their residence; and the two children Shasta (9) and Dylan (8) who were kidnapped. The media reported the slain couple's checkered past with meth and the children's father pleaded with them that they not dwell on that but focus on getting his children back. I was just as sure as you, clarkjoebob, that the parents owed money and the kids had been sold for child porn. Turns out I was 100% wrong and it was just some psycho sex predator that did it so he could molest the children (killed Dylan too, only Shasta made it out of the whole mess alive). Turns out it had nothing whatsoever to do with drugs and the media succeeded in dragging dead peoples names through the mud because that's their job, even though there was no evidence whatsoever that their drug use and the children's disappearance were related. I myself was forced to admit that my own judgment about the case was 100% wrong. For all the self-righteous a-holes out there who have never done anything wrong, made any mistakes, or had an addiction (be it drugs, porn, gambling, going to church, etc.): good for you; now shut up and let those of us who aren't perfect try to get through our lives without the added weight of your judgment constantly resting on us.

That is an assumption with nothing to go on. Neither you -nor I - have any idea what happened to these children. And at whatever point parents feel like they are being accused, and after they have done everything possible (re answering questions, granting access, taking lie detector tests) it is time to hire a lawyer.

The police can't do an Amber Alert unless they have a car associated with the abduction. However, I've thought from the beginning that they should have simultaneously pursued the possibility of abduction along with their investigation of the lake. That way, if they didn't find anything in the lake, they'd have somewhere to go instead of sitting around scratching their heads...which is exactly what they're doing now. They've waited too long, and in the week that they've wasted, their chances of finding these girls have significantly dwindled.

Harold my friend, your heart and sentiments are in the right place. America's judicial system is totally broken and needs fixing, big time. However, it is all we have at this point. You are correct that capital murder convictions should result in the execution of the scumbags. For one thing, we need to reform the justice system to a time-line. There are statutes of limitations for certain crimes, meaning after say seven years someone cannot be convicted after a given lapse of time. Simply, we need to do the same thing in reverse for punishment of capital offenders. Pick a number; OK let's say 15 years. Make that the time frame for all appeals through the judicial process. After that, your ticket has been punched; if you have not been exonerated, well it's supper time in Hell. This would give bleeding hearts such as myself, the knowledge that justice has been served, and the punishment (execution) should be meted out accordingly. And to add a little pizazz to this, make the murderer know all avenues of appeals have been exhausted and that sometime within the next year they will be put down like the mad dogs they are. But don't give them a date, just sometime within the next 365 days they wil be executed. Let them squirm in their cells, sweating every day out, not knowing when the guards and chaplain will be taking them to the end of death row, and existence on this planet. No more 40 years of appeal after appeal, with taxpayers footing the bill. And living in fear for the year would make more sense than just executing them; that's too easy, too painless. It's time to start judicial reform now. The scales of Lady Justice are cruelly in favor of the perpetrator, with victims having fewer rights than the criminal. The time has come.

They prob know more than they are letting on. It's their prerogative. I am from a neighboring town and believe me, it has touched everyone. All the negative comments about the police/sheriff and FBI are uncalled for. The FBI WAS there right away, no Amber Alert was issued b/c there was no description of any vehicle or any person. A lot of speculation still exists and will until these girls are found. Misty and Dan did cooperate with the police all week long. They searched their house, took polygraphs, everything. So I'm guessing that after a week of knowing that people are probably looking at them as suspects....even though the police are saying they are not.....that they've had all they can take emotionally. I'm really not sure why they were told to stop. But it might have something to do with the police screaming at Dan for several hours accusing him of killing the girls. The police have searched houses in town...along with known sex offenders. They've been stopping all traffic leaving town and all of the towns garbage from last week was seperated at the landfill and has either been gone through, or is being searched. We had over 1,000 volunteers come out and help search the lake, the park and all kinds of fields around the area.....they found nothing.

I do agree however that the girls are top priority. No tip is to small to report..........

I really can't blame the parents for stopping cooperating with the police. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have your child missing, you're crazy with worry, and instead of looking for the people who took her it seems like they're instead trying to pin it on you - which, if you didn't do it, means they aren't looking for your child. While this may not be how it's actually going, putting myself in the parents shoes I can sure see how it would appear that way to them.
