Would-be model plane bomber Ferdaus admits plan to attack Pentagon, Capitol

Rezwan Ferdaus, a Massachusetts man who allegedly plotted to fly explosives-packed model planes into the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol, has reignited concern about the risk of a home-grown militant attack in the United States.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Massachusetts man charged with plotting to attack the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol with remote-controlled model airplanes filled with explosives entered a guilty plea in a Boston federal court on Friday.

Rezwan Ferdaus told a packed courtroom, including his distraught family members, that he would accept the plea deal for a 17-year prison term that was hammered out by his attorneys and prosecutors this month.

Ferdaus' mother sobbed as her son was led away by U.S. Marshals at the end of the hearing.

The charges against Ferdaus had carried a potential combined sentence of 35 years in prison. Sentencing will take place on November 1.

Ferdaus, 26, of Ashland, Massachusetts, pled guilty to attempting to destroy and damage a federal building, and attempting to provide material support to terrorists.

He initially pleaded not guilty to a total of six charges after his arrest in September 2011. Authorities dropped four charges in exchange for the guilty plea.

After entering his guilty plea, Ferdaus tried to lean over to comfort his crying mother but was quickly pulled away by U.S. Marshals. She sobbed uncontrollably and had to be supported by family members as her son was led out of the courtroom.

Ferdaus was arrested after an FBI investigation during which he requested and took delivery of plastic explosives, three grenades and six assault rifles from undercover FBI agents that he believed were members of al-Qaida.

At the time of his arrest, the physics graduate from Boston's Northeastern University had obtained one remote-controlled aircraft, a scale model of a U.S. Navy F-86 Sabre fighter jet about the size of a picnic table.

He kept the model in a storage locker in suburban Boston rented under the name "Dave Winfield."

Plan to 'decapitate' U.S. military center
Authorities said the public was never in danger from the explosives and weaponry, which they said were always under the control of federal officials during the sting operation.

The government had alleged that Ferdaus told undercover agents of his plans to commit acts of violence against the United States by "decapitating" its "military center" and killing "kafirs," an Arabic term meaning non-believers.

Prosecutors said Ferdaus began planning jihad, or holy war, against the United States in 2010 after becoming convinced through jihadi websites and videos that America was evil. He later contacted a federal informant and began meeting to discuss the plot with undercover agents.

Counterterrorism experts and model-aircraft enthusiasts say it would be nearly impossible to inflict large-scale damage using model planes.

But both inside and outside court Friday, prosecutors described an elaborate plan they said Ferdaus was committed to carrying out.

Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Siegmann said that if the case had gone to trial, prosecutors would have used recordings on which Ferdaus is heard detailing the plot.

Siegmann said there were two main parts of his plan: to blow up the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol using remote-controlled planes and to kill American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan using improvised explosive devices detonated by modified cellphones.

The planes, measuring 60 to 80 inches in length and capable of speeds greater than 100 mph, would be guided by GPS and packed with 5 pounds each of plastic explosives.

Siegmann said Ferdaus traveled to Washington, D.C., to scout out his targets and later gave the undercover agents surveillance photos and maps. She said Ferdaus told them his plan "ought to terrorize" and "ought to result in the downfall of this entire disgusting place."

Siegmann said Ferdaus modified 12 cellphones so they could act as an electrical switch for an IED.

After giving the first device to the undercover agents, the agents lied and told him it had been used in Iraq and killed three U.S. soldiers.

Siegmann said Ferdaus was "visibly excited" to learn his device had been used successfully and said, "That was exactly what I wanted."

Ferdaus told Judge Richard Stearns that he was being treated for mild depression and anxiety before he was arrested and is now taking anti-anxiety medication.

During an earlier court hearing, Ferdaus' lawyers suggested that the FBI ignored signs of mental illness in Ferdaus while investigating him. An FBI agent acknowledged that the FBI had received reports about bizarre behavior by Ferdaus, including a report to Hopkinton police about one incident in which authorities say he stood in the road not moving and appeared to have wet his pants.

When asked Friday whether Ferdaus' mental health was taken into account when making the 17-year sentencing recommendation, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Pirozzolo cited Ferdaus' composed responses to the judge's questions and the judge's comment that Ferdaus is "obviously an intelligent and well-educated young man."

"He answered clearly; he was lucid," Pirozzolo said.

Siegmann said the defense didn't request a mental examination.

Ferdaus is a Muslim born and raised in Massachusetts to parents of Bangladeshi descent.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

To be honest, most of the world dislikes America, or Americans. Some of it is deserved, and some of it is just plain envy. The fact is that every government and social hierarchy in every country is corrupt to some extent. Corruption and greed is rampant in this world, among other less desirable qualities. Once you add a fanatical religious hatred to the mix, you end up with those that just want to hurt people for the sake of hatred through terror.

This world is coming to a climax of smaller wars turning into something bigger, and its possibly not far off. These attack will be more frequent, and some will be successful. Our government needs and attitude of "walk tall, and carry a big stick" with these fanatics.

Rather than pay to imprison these terrorist, give them a taste of their own medicine. They should load his model plane with the explosives, tie him to a pole in the desert, and fly the plane into him. Only then can he feel the terror that he so willingly wanted to inflict upon others. Then he can go get his 72 virgins, hopefully all male.

That same fate should also face the shooter in Aurora Colorado. Tie him to a pole, and shoot him with an assault rifle till he is swiss cheese.

I agree with you guys !

The country and world are in a very sorry state of affairs . It still might not be to late to turn everything around and set us along with the rest of the world off into the proper direction. In today's world it is the all about me attitude that is killing our country and society . To change the world , first we must change ourselves . But I fear that the powers that be , will not allow this to happen . The quest for money and the exploitation of other countries natural resources is all to strong a drug for them to give up .

We (the United States) do exactly that .... we call them drones, and kill alleged "terrorist" (or "freedom" fighters depending on your perspective) along with innocent people with regularity in foreign lands .... It wont be long before we will be bringing the show to your home town .....

Collateral damage has always been a part of war , and always will be !!!!!!

To really understand what is going on and why, one must keep their eye on the prize. That is the control and exploitation of a countries natural resources by corporate America. Modern day warfare is conducted gorilla style ( no front lines ) . That style started with Vietnam . The gorillas do not wear uniforms , they hide among the resident population, and at times wear the uniforms of their countries army . One can not tell the players even with a score card . Forgot !!!! There are NO RULES in that type of a war . So tell me !! How would fight this type of war ???? Terror and Terrorists play a huge part in this type of war . The object is to demoralize your enemy and destroy his will to fight .

Change "jihadi" for "Limbaugh" or "Beck" and maybe change "America" for "Democrats" or "Obama" and you see the serious problems being created right here in our own back yard. Myself, I see the same hatemongering at play here. Same level of mentality.

Bob,

Well, let's see. There's Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and now even that lunatic congresswoman from Minnesota, Michelle Bachman, that could be added to the list and certainly many more lesser known ones. They should know that amongst the large number of hate-filled idiots in our country that some might be as stupid as this nut Ferdaus is. They probably DO know that and are just hoping to get their jollies off some day.

I believe they do what do for two reasons. 1) To keep the pot boiling and well stirred up. 2) To keep their ratings up so they can get larger raises ( greed ). As for Bachman she empties her head every time she opens her mouth !!!!! I would like to get a piece of her action from insider trading . You are most correct when you implied they pray on the weaker of mind in this country and there for are a danger to the rest of us.

I would just like to know what he thought he was going to accomplish. I mean the amount of explosives that thing could carry Isn't that much because it's not like he had weapon grade stuff and with all the security these buildings have now and what they're built to withstand it just seems implausible to think he could cause much damage and destruction. I don't understand how someone can have so much hate built up inside. It's sad.

Kanard,

If you have reading comprehension skills you might find this of interest.

Republican politicians – and the party in general, have been attempting to harness the rhetoric of violence and bigotry. Those who wish to be considered serious and responsible should reject these words of hate, and I would apply that standard equally to the left as to the right. The unfortunate truth is that at the moment, the right wing’s rhetoric of violence far out paces that on the left. The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Department of Homeland Security have issued warnings on the increasing risk of violence from the right. We are seeing that violence come about and those who deny it have begun to take on the character of those who whistle while walking past the graveyard. We have a responsibility as good citizens to steer the rhetoric away from the extremes we are seeing. As Jon Stewart said %

Art,

Now don't be playing with model airplanes now. Takes a well functioning brain to be able to control them. There's plenty of hatred on both sides, but much more on the reichside. Nor will you find liberal media even coming close to the hatred being spewed by the likes of Limbaugh. Ed Shultz doesn't even come close.

As posted above, "Department of Homeland Security ..... issued warnings on the increasing risk of violence from the right." This "New Black Panther Party" is probably so infiltrated by moles that they couldn't fart without it being recorded. I really wouldn't be worried about them, even though they also are probably qualified to be called a lunatic fringe.

Gotta go. Have a busy day ahead of me. Have a good day guys.

I see the American haters and traitors are out in force. The only reason we have drones picking off the BAD GUYS is that they vowed to kill Americans. Innocent citizens not soldiers on a battlefield. And when you attempt to kill innocent American citizens then you will pay the price. And most of the world does not hate America, Floyd. You need to get out more. Travel around Asia and Europe and you shall find the truth. Saying this guy is no different than the drones the USA uses to kill people who vow to kill Americans couldn't be further from the truth and is a ficticous statement.

I agree that words have consequence because this fellow was following the path of very bad words spoken against America. But I stop short of equating Bachman's stupid dog-whistle politically inspired lunatic pronouncements with someones actions. 1st) take note that your "much better than right wing" "mainstream <liberal> media's" first report of the Aurora shooter is that he was a 54 old member of the tea party. When in fact he is a 24 year old with a psychology major pursuing a neuroscience degree. Now that they know he's a "student" the media isn't so interested in enlightening us with his political leanings. These reporting strategies of painting the left in "rays of sunshine" and the right in the "fires of hate" are dishonest.

2nd) The attempts of the left to compare the "right" to the "reich" are also dishonest. The full name of the NAZI party was the National Socialist Party. They were in favor of many forms of socialism that were useful to enriching their power including; eugenics, abortion and gun control.

Collateral damage has always been a part of war , and always will be !!!!!!

Rape, Theft, mayhem, brutalization, torture, destruction of property, and every other despicable act known to man has been a "perk" of war; "War is Hell" is a undisputed truism ... when a human is in engaged combat.

A close friend (A Vietnam vet) said it takes about two weeks to turn a man into a animal in a combat situation ..... it's so true. Armchair quarterbacks that want to talk about war from their position in front of a TV watching the news need a dose of reality.

Today we prosecute soldiers,"warriors" for criminal acts should they commit the acts that were accepted in past conflicts ... the acts are not "collateral damage." When technology comes to a point that a man is ordered control a missile from a computer terminal 6000 miles away and fly through a open window or door, or into a rooftop .... the death that in sue from that IS NOT "collateral damage!" It is a willful act, and should be prosecuted as should torture! If they were falling in your neighborhood you would want it to end at any price ... even if they were targeting ben ladin!

"So Sorry .. We had information that ben ladin was in the house next door ... the death of your family was just "collateral damage" ..

Wiki

The U.S. military's approach to collateral damage

The U.S. military follows a technology based process for estimating and mitigating collateral damage. The software used is known as “FAST-CD” or “Fast Assessment Strike Tool—Collateral Damage."[12] When followed, this process dramatically reduces the amount of collateral damage in U.S. military operations, and also ensures high levels of political accountability. However, due to the realities of combat operations, the process is not always followed.[13] The U.S. military’s collateral damage estimation process is intended to ensure that there will be a less than 10 percent probability of serious or lethal wounds to non-combatants.[13] Less than 1% of pre-planned operations which followed the collateral damage estimation process resulted in collateral damage.[13] When collateral damage has occurred, 70% of the time it was due to failed “positive identification” of a target, 22% of the time it was attributable to weapons malfunction, and a mere 8% of the time it was attributable to proportionality balancing - e.g. a conscious decision that anticipated military advantage outweighed collateral damage.[13] According to public statements made by U.S. government officials the President of the United States or the Secretary of Defense must approve any pre-planned ISAF strike where 1 civilian casualty or greater is expected

We are supposed to be the "Good Guys" saving "Freedom & Liberty" not the "Fascist" of the world imposing our will on everyone else in it by creating "Fear from The Skies!"

We are destroying have destroyed our own image ..... worldwide ..

It makes little or no difference if you put a hell fire missile through a window, a smart bomb down the chimney or an ARTIE round through a wall . Collateral Damage is collateral damage just the same !!! And just what is one suppose to do when the enemy hides in the homes of noncombatants ?????? It is the same problem we faced in NAM !!! As long as you are the subject. What about the London Blitz and all the carpet bombing of Europe during ww11 ????????????????????

When you kill people in the time of war, you are considered a hero. However, when you kill people in peaceful times, you are considered criminal.

War is hell. The problem is there is so many things written to praise war like being "Heroes on the battlefield" or "Glorious battle that will past down for years to come". These are reasons they sugar-coated the act of killing to get more people to do their bidding.

Islam is a murder cult bent on political control of the world through torture and killing of it's own and all others to demand control (and of course wealth). Islam is NOT a "religion".When articles like this one fail to describe the 'terrorist' as an Islamic extremist it takes the truth out of the press release. As has been said and shown time and again, these model planes simply do not have the ability to carry any significant weight and as such, they are not capable of carrying enough explosives to do any real damage. This was a delusional dream from a sick mind that had no real chance of accomplishing much of anything. I am glad that they caught this guy since he may have managed to kill or injure a handful of people, but the idea that he would have done any damage to the Pentagon or the Capitol is a complete joke.

I seriously believe that anyone preaching hatred and violence is responsible somewhat, if not a whole lot, for the actions of those who take their messages to heart. Obviously this is rampant in the world of Islam, and is being preached by way too many of their spiritual leaders. But I would also point out that we have many over here preaching hatred and creating unfounded fears in the hearts of many. Not so much from "spiritual" leaders, unless the likes of Limbaugh consider themselves to be such. But they are obviously trying to portray the president of our United States to be a dangerous threat to us all and are constantly fanning the fires of hatred that they ignite. I am much more worried about the end results of their rhetoric than I am of any terrorist trying to carry bombs in their underwear or shoes or even model airplanes. They are trying their best to split this country in half and are doing a damn good job of it so far. So I guess the rabid reich out there can collapse this post too if they can't stand to hear some truth.

while this guy might have had ideas to destroy america from the propaganda he has heard both from his fellow muslims and even right here in the states, he had no real method to initiate any such attack. those model airplanes are not designed to carry any additional weighs beyond maybe a few ounces and even that has to be placed just right or the whole thing is out of balance. to say that he could just load any model plane with 5lbs of explosives and then have it remote gps to the locations is just pure fantasy. the FBI set this guy up after they knew he was being indoctrinated, so they gave this guy an outlandish plot and feed him all the info and supplies he needed, they helped him all they way and arrested him after knowing that at no point did he have any clue what he was doing or how to even carry out the plan the FBI made for him. he would need extensive knowledge in aerodynamics, electronics and programing, build/modify his own plane to even attempt to load 5lbs to fly by gps. it is no easy task to do what the FBI is saying he was trying to do.

the FBI set all this up so they could parade this guy around and so they could look like they are nabbing muslim terrorists on our own soil. at no point did this guy come up with the idea to use model airplanes to commit terrorists acts, that was the FBI's plan to use against him. he was, however, brainwashed by jihad so the FBI just speed things along with entrapment. must be nice when all you have is thought and here comes the FBI to help you along and arrest you after. technically he never committed a crime until the FBI aided and abetted this guy with intel and materials.

the left is no better than the right and both parties indoctrinate their followers and until we as US citizens can shed this corrupt 2 party system, we will never be free.

division is the tool of the corrupt to fool the masses into believing anything.

Guerrilla tactics in warfare, in the US, began with the American Indians. They were kicking our butts, had we not strength in numbers and arms we would be speaking a very different language today.

During the Revolutionary War we used the tactics on the English with great success.

This guy was really a doofus. It is not possible to pack such a model plane with enough explosives to do much damage. The best he could have hoped for was to fly it into the window of some office and cause some damage to it - assuming that he had the skill to do so, and that he could set off the explossive - pretty unlikely.

                  Subject: False God?
                  Name: Dr. Ali

                  Message:
Your comment you left is very naive. Islam is an Abrahamic religion based on both the old and new testament and includes all the prophets in the bible including Jesus. Are you calling the diety of Jews, Christians, and Muslims a false God?

Sorry Ali, I’m not the naïve one. The Lord Jesus Christ is not allah. I understand that Abraham was the father of both Ishmael and Isaac which is the true source of muslims fighting Jews for what they feel is their rightful inheritance as the first born, HOWEVER, God promised Israel to ISAAC, His CHOSEN one….not to say that God didn’t also feel sorry for Ishmael and also blessed him, but they turned their backs on God and worshipped false gods, which is why they no longer have his blessing.

God promised Abraham and Sarah (NOT HAGAR) an heir who would bless all nations and raise up a mighty people who would spread love, faith and hope around the world, this certainly doesn’t describe the muslims or islam.

This feud of jealousy and resentment has continuously set off wars and atrocities for 4000 years! It is that title deed to the land of Israel, which God promised to Abraham’s lineage that has been the source of friction between the Jews and Arabs.

Muslims believe Jews changed and distorted the Bible in order to establish themselves as the heirs of Abraham’s Covenant blessings, however, they fail to explain how the New Testament, written by Christians who had no motive for following Jewish falsifications clearly teaches that the Covenants were made to Isaac and HIS descendants.

God’s words to Abraham in Genesis are some 2500 years older than the creation of Islam.

“Sarah your wife shall bear you a son and you shall call him Isaac and I will establish a covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. Genesis 17: 19-21

The very basis of islam, is that God’s true covenant was with Ishmael rather than Isaac is based on a lie! If they don’t believe in God, why do they bother?

                  Swagganaut,

Now I consider your post to be one of the best insights on this issue yet. A very common practise amongst our police forces at all levels. But it is probably a great idea to get these types of nuts off the streets. If they didn't lead him by the nose the possibility is that a real terrorist organization would.

Yeah getting rid of religion will rid us of all the looney's right? Like the atheists Hitler, Jack the ripper, Vlad the Impaler, Ghengis Khan, those that even if some of them followed some religious traditions, it wasn't due to their personal beliefs, which didn't exist. Trying to put all the blame on religion is just as discriminating as racism, or being sexist. The same person that is discriminating against religion would probably have been a good slave owner too. Believing your better than others is the same no matter what the excuse is.

"My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice... And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people." Adolf Hitler April 12, 1922

religion is not the problem it is how some on all sides interpret it. I for one try to live peacefully in honor to my lord and savior Jesus Christ I don't push my faith on others but I do try to lead by example. Maybe if we all put the blame where it belongs, with the perpetrators we would be better served.

You would do well to hold those within your faith accountable to the concepts Jesus preached....things like compassion, tolerance, charity, and forgiveness are seen as weakness by so many who profess "a personal relationship with Jesus". Makes me wonder how such an obvious message could be so adulterated by those who wear their religion on their sleeves. But what else can you expect from those many rightwing christians who continue to advocate capital punishment, the very concept that made the crucifiction of their supposed "Lord and Savior" legal?

again HITLER WAS NOT A CHRISTIAN!!! how many freaking times do people need to repeat this. just because someone calls themselves whatever or says whatever does not mean they are who they are. ITS CALLED LYING!! hitler was never a christian, he used the CATHOLIC church to gain support for his power and he also used islam to kill jews and christians alike. NAZI= national socialist party, nothing christian about that.

if i told you i was the reincarnate of jesus, would you believe me? why not? i said i was, isnt that enough proof? if i said im the richest guy in the world would you believe me? why not? i said i was, isnt that good enough for ya? seems to be good enough for you to believe hitler was christian even though everything he did was against everything christ stood for but hey i guess because he used some religious words that he must be religious.

countless tyrannical leaders have used peoples beliefs against them regardless of their own personal beliefs. people with a power complex will always find ways to gain power even if that means lying and killing.

I was a Christian for 20 years until I finally able to understand that there is no such thing as god. This is from thousands of hours of reading through history books.

Now I am an atheist and religious people scare me. Muslim is living in the 11st centuries while Christian is living in 16th centuries, both relies on centuries old book. The same books they used to justify all the horrible actions of killing innocent people, burning down villages and torture people who don't believe in the same faith they believe in.

As you said, this is "freedom of religion", so keep your religions out of my life. How many bills tailor to religions? Too many to count.

There are lots of reason why people do something, but religions are often the motivation. They hide behind their gods, used god as an excuse to do something.

Look at the presidential candidates "God told me to run for the president" from 3 candidates. Doesn't sound like "freedom of religion" to me if you have to use god as an excuse line or something to your advantages.

Edit: I have been in US for more than 15 years and in case you didn't know, there are religions in my country as well, so to say "ungodly" countries sound really stupid on your part. This is my country as much as your, use your brain next time.

Atheism basically is the choice to not believe anything that cannot be proven, and to choose not to live their life in "faith". It only stands out when put into contrast with "religions", but it is not a religion.

I'm not suggesting that religion be "eradicated" - lots of people depend on their religious beliefs for meaning in their lives; I see nothing wrong with that. But don't claim that all terrible acts without it. Jimmy Jones comes to mind. And of course, more recently, there was the murderer in Norway.

You are right that usually men are the ones carrying out the act; however, just last week, in London, 6 people were arrested for planning terrorist attacks. One was a female! Further, in Israel, women are involved in Jihad as well as men. I believe in western countries women are involved on a smaller, discreet scale helping behind the scenes including moving money to the cause by supporting their brothers, fathers, cousins, uncles etc in other ways. Moreover, ideological and emotional supporters are just as guilty and should be held accountable.

Yeah, a ducted-fan jet is a seriously poor choice as a first plane. It's going to be fast and light. It would be hard to hit a small target and even if it did it couldn't carry much explosive. He may have had five pounds of PE, but if he put even one pound on a plane like that it would never get airborne.

He should have started with something like a Super Cub LP, which can carry more weight, is easier to fly for a beginner, and flies slow enough to hit a target reliably. Even then, it wouldn't have blown up a building. More likely it would have made a big burn mark and that's it. The whole idea is so silly.

I don't think that is a DF jet, I believe it is a turbine. Would be very hard pressed to stuff enough explosives in that thing to do much good and still be able to carry enough fuel to get it somewhere without having to lauch it pretty close to the site. The GPS technology to fly would also require some room. I have some of these jets and you are pretty tight for space with the just the necessities to get it in the air, much less carry something with much destructive force. If he had never flown one before he sure picked a hard one to learn on. His plot was foiled from the beginning, but then again these guys, much like Richard the Shoebomber, do not tend to be the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Since this "plot" was being put together by our own police, do you really think they would have offered him a real choice of planes? Methinks they wanted to make sure it was a no-go situation from the beginning.

An ideology that prefers a group over all others is inherently evil and that includes Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Mormonism, Hinduism and any other new invented faith. Faith means believe without proof even if the belief contradicts logic; such as "the man who died on the cross is God", or "Mohammed - a mass murderer who claims he rode on a horse with wings has received the Koran from God", or "Abraham who screwed the maid then left her in the middle of the dessert with her new born son is a pious man and messenger of God", etc.

When settelers came to America their goal was not to rob the indians of their religeon and/or kill them all, muslims on the other hand want to do just that to the entire world if the world is not willing to convert to their beliefs. Are you astute enough to ferret out the difference....duh ????

Adam: can't change the past. But the present and future can be improved. In this case by decreasing our risk from Muslims.

The Indian thing vs white settlers is bogus when presented this way. This is history based on movies. Although cruel and bigoted actions against them are in no way justified, the truth is that most of them were wiped out by diseases that they had no immunity against and at that time cultural groups were much more against other different groups no matter which one you are talking about. The Europeans and their descendants had the power and organization that tribal people didn't. However if you look at tribal warfare they usually try to wipe out the adversary with a 90% death rate on the losing side not uncommon. The Indian tribes that were present when the white men arrived were the decendents of the winners. They had wiped out earlier tribes such as the Anasazi that were there before them. So this whole thing is about how far back you go, not just the history we recorded of ourselves, as to who is the "native" and who is the "foreigner." Not trying to justify what happened, just show that it is not so simple, and that this idea of the Indians as just peaceful victims is romantic idealism. Sorry to get so far off topic but can not let some of these comments go that are so simple minded.

The native americans had life expectancy of about 39 yrs. STDs wiped most of them out early. They had not observed nature enough to see that cats of all kinds bury their poop. They were nomads because they could not stand the smell of their encampments. Open human waste piles next to rivers gave them lots of diseases. You cannot blame that on 'the white settlers'. Remember, Kennewick man was of nordic ancestry!

Mike... WE, the white man, brought the diseases here, you moron! Do you practice being stupid or does it just come naturally?

Sam, WE, the white man, didn't have any knowledge of germs causing disease or that there could be populations never exposed to those diseases with no immunity. You can't blame the people then and they didn't plan to kill the Indians with disease.

THIS IS DIFFERENT. The Muslims PLAN to kill us with bombs.

I don't understand these people. They came to this country of their own free will. The U.S. has never put a gun to anyone's head and demand that come here to live. This is the only country that I know of that allows everyone freedom to live their life the way they want. We are free to practice any type of religion out there that we can think of, from Cathelism to worshiping turnips. When I see these picketers complaining about this nation, the very first question I ask is: " Why are you still here if you feel you are being mistreated? This is the land of the free and you are free to leave anytime you like!"

For a land of the free, there are many many prisoners, more wars than you can count abroad and selling arms and supporting many dictators outside of the land of the free. And that is just for starters.

For the record: I am not anti-USA. I am just pointing out you live in a fairytale-bubble of gigantic proportions if you believe there is only freedom and prosperity in the USA. Also it is weird you cannot fathom why people dislike the USA. Reality is not one of your strongpoints, is it?

But I prefer the USA over any muslimruled country, as I am from a western country myself: The Netherlands. A true country of the free. Gay-marriage, few prisoners, legalized weed-use, freedom of religion: more than USA. More democracy: one man, one vote. No registration as partymember needed to vote, because being a citizen suffices. You get invited by the government to vote, its not an obligation. Abortion is legalized: less abortions pro capita than in many if not all USA-parts. Healthcare for all. Almost forgot the euthanasia. Not even close to the numbers in the USA. And its all legal. You see the point? Make it legal and there is less demand. Give more education and there is less repression, less deaths and more freedom of choice.

All muslim immigration must be halted. These Koran bred nuts have been brainwashed that all other religions must be destroyed. Pastor Terry Jones of FL was right when he put the Koran on trial and found it to be guilty of crimes against humanity. No muslim can be truly trusted. Who knows how many agents Iran has here that are sleeping and awaiting orders to bomb a bridge or tunnel.

We certainly don't want to elect a clueless Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter, draft dodger, job outsourcer and Etch A Sketch Champion to deal with this problem. He always lies.

This guy has yet to provide his tax returns for the last 5 years. It should show how much he has evaded in taxes and how much unreported income he has stashed away in Cayman Island and Swiss bank accounts. He is your typical right wing thief.

There have been many rumors going around that little lyin Willardo was seen in a baby carriage in Tijuana. with a bottle of Corona Light in one hand and an Etch A Sketch in the other. The side of his carriage had the name "Little Lyin Willardo" on it. So when we see the long form of his birth certificate and it says Willardo on it and not Willard, we will know something is wrong.

Isn't it funny, that his new buddy Fox Top Trump never asked lyin Willardo for a copy of it?

What a joke. Less and less of the stupid right wing nuts come out to back lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader and bankrupter and they rave about it. As most people know, the evangelicals consider the mormons an evil anti-christ cult. The mormons have been converting dead jewish people, without their knowledge to become mormons to enhance their religion. They baptise them when they are dead. These sick aholes were caught when they tried to convert Anne Frank to be a mormon. The Church of the Latter Day Saints has now ordered these mormon priests to cease this immediately.

These repuke dunces best bet is to bring back Herman (9Kampf) Cain, the dress slitherer. He can draft Jerry Sandusky for V.P. Who cares what they have done in the past, they are against abortion, that is all that counts.

CAIN/SANDUSKY 2012. The true repuke family values candidates.

Remember the concert for Bangladesh that raised many millions of dollars to save starving children there? I'd wager that the bulk of those dollars came from American citizens! We are a huge, complex nation, some of what we do as a country could certainly be defined as evil but our generosity toward the rest of the world is unparallelled by ANY other nation on earth.

Like so many others, I am sick of the wars we wage and am offended by the lack of respect our leaders show American citizens intelligence when they talk about needing more money for defense. If ALL we did was defense we could cut our military spending by a large amount. What we call defense today involves offensive actions in many other parts of the world. Some of those actions most certainly are necessary but the "in your face" large scale operations that were Iraq and are Afghanistan were NOT. Iraq, a war predicated on bald faced lies about WMD's and Afghanistan, where we destroyed the terrorist's training base in the first few hours and routed the Taliban in the first week or two. More than a decade later we are still there, and so are the stinking Taliban!

We've spent trillions on these wars, our economy is a shambles largely due to the cost of these wars and we haven't been able to conquer the Taliban or eradicate radical Islamists? Who is funding our enemies? Who are we truly fighting?

Home grown terrorism is a bigger threat than another 9/11 style debacle. BTW, 9/11 should never have happened in the first place. Just as with Pearl Harbor or the Sinking of the Lusitania, there were plenty of warnings prior to the actual attack. The warnings were ignored or not taken seriously.

Then we get into the whole subject of "Jihad". Holy and WAR do not belong in the same sentence. There is NO SUCH THING as Holy WAR! War IS pure evil, if a Deity blesses action that is focused on killing fellow human beings then that Deity is most certainly not of a holy nature!

What a bunch of bogus garbage!

As to flying model planes laden with explosives into buildings, watch for restrictions on model airplanes...another threat, another effective means of eroding freedom and another small step toward the end of the greatest nation that ever was...

Who will send funds the next time there is a concert to raise money for starving children, who will send money and aid after the next large scale natural disaster when America is no more? The rest of the world had better wake up and recognize what is at risk!

It's called following the dictates of Islam and "sudden Jihad syndrome". Any judge who lets any sort of mental incompetence thing stand with this Islamic terrorist should be shoved from the bench.

And, we're still waiting for progress on the Nidal Hassan, Mr. Workplace Violence, thing ...

Did you read the same article that I did? It said that he went to JIHADIST websites and that is where he cultivated his hate and irrational logic about the country that he was born and raised in. No one is giving excuses except his lawyers, who are doing the JOB they were hired to do.

That said, since he is an American citizen then he should have been tried and convicted for TREASON and that carries the death penalty. Too often in the last 12 years we have, given prison sentences to American citizens who are trying to commit TREASON against this country and instead of doing what we should be doing we are being too lenient.

The other thing that needs to be looked at and dealt with is that those who have family members that do things like this need to know that all of their family will be shipped back to whatever country that they came from. Yes i know that this would not be fair tho the ones that were born here, but dammit they need to understand that they are going to lose something very precious if they do NOT reign in the family nutjobs. If they can ban people from low income housing because of one family member that is a terror to the rest of the residents, then we can do the same with people that have been allowed into this country. I am tired of hearing about people like this, they think they are so clever and what they are is STUPID.

Pray Hard, please go back to praying and maybe you will find some forgiveness for you broad brushing of everyone that does NOT believe as you do. Sorry but You are not always right!!!!

What this young man did shows that clearly there are people in this country ready to strike at the very heart of the nation which gives them more freedoms than any other country on earth. But he also demonstrated something chillingly more common. That hatred is easy to sow and its fruit to harvest. It knows no barrier, prejudice knows no boundary. You could remove religion and something else would take its place. Political differences, ethnic differences, cultural differences. sexual differences. People will always find something that is different between themselves and those they don't accept, for what ever reason they choose. It is about power, it is about being better than somebody else and top dog. Until the human heart can be cleansed of the inherent weaknesses of pride, self centeredness, greed, dishonesty and desire to control other people, we shall not eliminate the causes of conflict and suffering between races, genders, ages and cultures. Man is doomed to fail until he learns to see the common traits we all have and respect the unique qualities each offers.
