FBI: Missing Iowa girls believed to be alive

Investigators announced they are expanding the search for two missing cousins after new evidence convinced them the girls are alive. NBC's Craig Melvin reports.

EVANSDALE, Iowa -- Investigators said Saturday they have evidence that leads them to believe two cousins who vanished last week are still alive.

FBI spokeswoman Sandy Breault said that authorities strongly believe 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins have not been killed.

She refused to say what led authorities to that conclusion, but told reporters that investigators are expanding their search beyond Iowa.

The announcement came a day after authorities said they believe the girls were abducted.

The girls disappeared around noon July 13 shortly after they left their grandmother's house near Evansdale in northeast Iowa. Their bikes and a purse were found on a path near Meyers Lake, prompting investigators to drag it last weekend and to begin draining it earlier this week.

Elizabeth Collins, left, and Lyric Cook went missing in Evansdale, Iowa on Friday.

On Friday, authorities said they were treating the case as an abduction after an FBI dive team used sophisticated sonar to determine the girls' remains were not in  the lake.

Breault says investigators are interviewing "persons of interest" in the case, whom she declined to identify.

On Friday, Rick Abben, chief deputy with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's office, had said investigators still had no single person of interest in the case. Abben said investigators had recovered some evidence and sent it to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for analysis. He declined to say what the evidence was or where it was found.

Abben also confirmed that investigators had asked a judge to compel Lyric's father, 36-year-old Daniel Morrissey, who faces drug charges but is free on bond, to submit to closer watch by parole officers pending his trial.

He said the request -- which was granted on Thursday -- did not imply that Morrissey, who has stopped cooperating with investigators, was a suspect in the case.

"That was done so that we have a little bit closer ... supervision of people," Abben said. "We are not looking at anyone. Everyone is being checked into."

Miss Abbey:

Hopefully found alive, but with "harm". It is some nutcase. No one takes 2 girls, and doesn't do something to their psyche, or harm them in an intimate way.

Remember the kidnapping of the Eilzabeth Smart in Utah, and other similar abductions. The Duggar girl? in CA.

Coop~ Not really. Those two kids are cuties, and the parents are a tad suspect in some instances so "iffy" is a good word to describe it. I hope they are found unharmed both physically and mentally. If there's hope that they are alive I hope everyone clings to it.

LEAVE CHILDREN ALONE!!!!!!!!!!! WTF.

Only a completely spineless, low life, cowardly bastard would ever hurt, mistreat or abuse a defenceless child. You can never hide, at least not for long. I, would take great pleasure in opening a case of whoop-ass just for you.

I can't wait to watch all those folks with the 'iffy' parent comments eat their words when these girls are found with a complete stranger who is wholly unknown to the family. For the last few days all I've seen is people on Newsvine giving their expert opinions on each interview the parents have appeared in. Informing us that their reactions are not the norm, they act suspicious, etc etc. So many of you eager to "try 'em and fry 'em" and pretty much ruin their lives regardless.

If in the end I'm wrong and the parents were involved, then I will be back to admit it. But if I'm right, will you?

The post is saying, the parents have a bad past, thats why they are "IFFY" parents. Doesnt mean they are guilty in the childrens disaperance.

Chris and James hopefully you are correct and the parents have nothing to do with their disapperance, but watch Lyric's mom on Nancy Grace. She showed absoultly no emotion whatsoever. She seemed like she was giving a commentary on a book she had read or a show she had seen that bored her complelty. Weirdest thing I have seen in a very long time. I can tell you, heaven forbid, if someone snatched one of my children I would be beside myself. She actually showed less emotion then some of the reporters on the scene. Very odd

Chris~ The people on here saying "Iffy" means just that, they are iffy. It doesn't mean I think they are automatically guilty and neither do I think that's what Lusitania meant. Stop reading things that aren't there. Are you going to come back now and admit you where wrong in judging me?

A lot of times parents are given valium to calm them down in these types of situations. That would explain the lack of emotion.

No because you are still casting suspicion on the parents without evidence of guilt other than your 'iffy' feeling. Neither of us are qualified psychologists and able to analyze their reactions for guilt or innocence. No have I seen any of these shows have an expert come on to tell us he/she thinks they are involved either.

#1.15 - Sun Jul 22, 2012 11:54 AM EDT

That's what I thought.

There are people out there that are iffy, something about their character, something about the way they carry themselves.... Doesn't mean you are making a rash judgement, doesn't mean you can say for certain that they are creeps, doesn't even mean they are guilty of something, it just means that you feel like something is off. You don't have to be a psychologist to say a person seems iffy and you may even be wrong about it but that doesn't mean I'm going to invite them to dinner.

Regardless of what your opinion is, it looks like when push comes to shove you still judge and are unwilling to admit you where wrong in judging others, since I have yet to say whether I think they are guilty or not.

~Cheers

You haven't said anything yet that requires me to admit I was right or wrong concerning the fact I think it's inappropriate that you consider these parents a "tad suspect". You said it, I don't agree with it, there is nowhere in there where I need to be sorry for not liking your remark.

I will admit that now I am judging you on the basis of how quickly you were to become defensive when your prior comment was criticized. If you can't handle a critique of your comments, then don't invite them by posting.

Chris~ I never said you needed to be sorry for not liking my remark. It's your opinion and I respect that. I asked if you where willing to admit you where wrong in misjudging me since I never said I thought they where guilty. So again, you read things that aren't there and judge based off it. You can critique my comments all you like, at least get it right.

missp~ You're right, it's pointless to argue (bicker) with a person who is bound and determined to cast stones in glass houses. I hope these two girls are brought back safe and sound. That's a stand I will keep, the rest isn't worth the effort.

I am with you hoping and praying they are found safe and back home in no time. Seriously hope the FBI arent giving the family false hope in saying they believe they are alive. I mean how can they really make that statement? Even they had been kidnapped and the kidnappers were demanding a ransom for their return, yes the FBI would know that information, but they still would not be sure the girls were still alive. The whole situation is just really bizarre

For all we know if there was a ransom maybe they spoke to the girls...they generally want proof of life in the case of ransom. However if they believe the girls are alive and the parents are being watched, as iffy as they seem I am inclined to think the parents have no knowledge of it. After days of the stress the body shuts down and the emotions become void ..its survival mode. It could be due to the past of the parents or related to absolutely nothing. I would like to believe the parents are innocent as there must be a special hell for parents who harm there children.

The majority of crime in this country is drug related. I know I harp a lot on this, but I really get mad when it involves kids.

And NO: I do not know this is about drugs, but the thought has crossed my mind.

Its obvious they know important information about the girl's and are keeping quiet until all the pieces of the puzzel fit. Im curious if a family member had any motive to take the girl's? And why. But what is important now is a safe and happy return and all the other details can be sorted out later. So wonderful to hear good news for once...everything you read is so depressing. being out on bond for drug charges does not mean this man is guilty of anything. He has not been convicted of the charges, and even if he is, that doesn't make him a child abductor. You people have vivid imaginations for sure.

It's getting really annoying (almost as annoying as ppl that use the comment section to push their religious and/or political beliefs) to read the comments and find ppl posting that haven't even bothered to read the article that they are attached to.

The man "stopped cooperating" with investigators. There's that red flag. If he's got nothing to hide, why stop cooperating? Druggies are not people with credibility when crimes are concerned. They'll do anything to get what they want.

Good job letting the FBI take over the case. The local police botched it horribly. All they could focus on was draining that stupid lake...why not let the FBI in there with their sonar in the first place? And why not also do a concurrent investigation into the possibility of abduction? Glad an ACTUAL investigation is happening, and glad that they have leads now...yesterday all they could do was sit around and scratch their heads after finding nothing in the lake.

When they didn't find the girls' socks and shoes I felt they had not drowned either. It is a shame an Amber alert could not have been issued sooner. Hopefully the security camera footage will give clues regarding the abductor/abductors.

rjh4509 - I read an article (yesterday, maybe) that said in order to use the enhanced sonar (FBI's equipment) there had to be 6 feet or less of water in the lake. I may be mis-remembering that, but I'm pretty sure that's correct.

"There also is security camera evidence of the girls about 12:15 p.m. July 13, the last day the girls were seen. The camera shows them in the area where their grandmother said she last saw them, in an alley on Lafayette Road."

I have my doubts with these parents. The husband and wife with the drug charges. Before I even knew about the drugs, the mother was always smirking , the dad never looking into the camera and always looked 'high'. I can't imagine being a parent and 'not freaking out'. My sister went missing and my parents went nuts. Sad to say, she was found bludgeoned to death... I'm not liking the feeling they are giving me, and no one else has stated that. I figured Nancy Grace would get the same feeling, but she never said that she thought this story was 'fishy'.. I do pray the girls are ok, but highly doubt it unless this is a planned story , or the drug dealers have them until the parents 'pay up' if they owe someone....

Here are two more reasons for parents to teach their children how to fight back, how to run and scream, how to kick and bite when they are in danger. They need to be 'street smart' like the little 10 year old girl in Philadelphia who fought back while her 2 year old brother stood by and screamed LOUDLY. The pervert dropped the girl, and made a get-away; but was caught since he was on surveilance tape. He's been out on the street; with a lengthy rap sheet; including sex crimes. He's a prime example of the sort of danger your children are in every day out on the public streets.

Completely agree--yet many of the forum posters on that article were talking about how a parent who allows her 10 year old to watch law and order (which is where she said she learned what to do the article said) must be horrible, that isn't appropriate, etc.

Yet she learned how to defend herself. She saved her and possibly her brother's life--so obviously Momma isn't doing too bad after all!

We raise our kids in a bubble then wonder why no one knows how to defend themselves..we are so scared of a kid seeing a little violence that we completely neglect to teach them that it can happen to them, and what to do if it does.

Force the NSA/Homeland Security/CIA/FBI to use the satellite photos to find these kids. Those satellites take ultra hi resolution photos every 6 seconds and they cover the hemisphere. They already know where these kids are at. Make the government work for us, we paid for those satellites. In nearly every case of abduction all government would have to do is go back to the photos taken at that time, using latitude and longitude and Violla. Youve got your perp, and by slowly going forward through the photos you can see where they have gone, get license #s off cars used etc. The resolution these cameras have is astonishing. They can read the date on a dime laying heads up through a rainstorm. If you doubt what Im saying, go back in history to WW2 and look at the 2'X2' negatives that were shot from airplanes @ high altitude. That was 70 years ago. The government owes us. The least they can do is safeguard our kids.

Your government already knows everything about you including every dollar your spend, where you are every day and with whom you communicate. So much for living in a free country.

The situation now is that most Americans are almost eager to accept abnormal conduct as normal conduct. I know this may come as a big surprise to most Americans, but there are countries, in the world, where children, of any age, can walk to school, either as individuals or in gropups of two or more, with the expectations that they are not in danger of being kidnapped or killed. There are countries, in the world, where freedom includes privacy, without a threat to safety.

Here is a fact check: America leads the developed world in the number of divorces, the number of abortions, the number of murders, the number of mass killings, the number of school shootings, the number of prison inmates, the number of violent crimes, the number gun crimes, the number of high school dropouts, the number of gun owners, the amount of money spent on war, the number of countries invaded, the number of men, women and children killed by its military and at the same time, it leads the developed world in the number of people who claim that their country is free and peaceful.

Gracie; I love my USA but numbers that Allan is citing are not that far off. Kinda creepy.

Allan: Also the largest number of druggies. Maybe that's what raises the other numbers.

Na69Mach1, Allen cited no numbers. He simply said "the numbers".... In 2011, Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian, killed 77 people and injured 319 more in a bombing and shooting rampage in Oslo and on Utoya Island. In June at a mall in Canada a gunman killed 1 and injured 7. 2008 Mumbai attack in India -185 killed. 2006 Mumbai train bombings in India - 207 killed. 2005 London bombings in the UK -52 killed. 2004 Beslan school crisis in Russia 344 killed. And really you should thank God or whomever you worship you don't live in Syria right now. America has her problems, but evil is everywhere and to think otherwise is to lull yourself into a false sense of security.

Gracie--thanks for the comment about the troops. My Soldier will be home next month - havent seen him in three yrs. even though this isnt related to this case regarding the missing girls

To Allen-- You can always exercise your right to leave this country if you think it is so terrible. I'm sure Iran or Zimbabwe would welcome you.

Thank you Azlandowner and Your Soldier and his service to our great country. Your Soldier and the people like you are the backbone of our great country and nothing can really repay his most honorable service. Again, my most humble thanks to Your Soldier and you for your sacrifice. My apologies for straying from the topic at hand.

In updated news, kgan.com/shared/newsroom/top_stories/videos/kgan_vid_12072.shtml (add www. to the link) has released the surveillance camera video of the girls on their bikes. It's very grainy. Hard to tell whom is riding the bicycles, but I assume the grandmother has ID'd them and the bikes. LE also took Misty Morrisey's car and cellphone and have been sent to the state crime lab in Ackeny. LE also announced that more check points are going to be set up and house-to-house checks are likely to happen. Praying with all my heart these two young girls are found alive and unharmed.

That was my thought too! And maybe they thought they could arrange it so they could get the reward money too. People are crazy... nothing would surprise me.

The media sensationalism of this story is disgusting. Reporting it is one thing, but these people are setting up specials and interviews with family members of the victims and friends of the killer who knew him. Dear media professionals, out of respect for human life, can you please wait until rigor has set in before shoving a camera in someone's face?!

the world is full of twisted sick individuals. your kids only defense is you! the 10 year old girl in philly was just plain lucky. I am not saying her instincts were'nt good, but it could have easily gone a different way. letting your kids go anywhere unsupervised is rolling the dice. I am heartsick for these kids and all kids that belong to parents that allow them to run around anywhere without an adult looking after them. tell your congressmen you want harsher laws for crimes against children. Its unbelievable that a child molester will recieve less time then a guy that gets caught selling an ounce of cocain. Go figure.

Walking a half a block away should be safe for a 10 year old. I can't imagine making kids so scared that they can't function in the world.

It is odd that the father was scheduled to be in court to enter a guilty plea, but called for the date be reset for trial the day before the girls disappeared. I hope the girls are found alive. $5000.00 for information is not very much money....Maybe for $50,000 somebody might squeal.

Okay. Thanks! I was just going by what is on the missing poster in this article. You are correct. The reward is $50,000.

MSNBC should really update their article, but then again they are infamous for not being the best news outlet for correcting/updating information.

I happen to believe drugs may very well be involved. Phillip Garrido who abducted Jaycee Dugard was a drug addict. Richard Allen Davis was on a drug-fueled binge when he abducted and murdered Polly Klaas in 1993. Habitual addict, Joseph Smith, abducted and brutally murdered Carlie Brucia in 2004. Sadly, I could go on....

I've chosen not to have kids, but I think if you choose to have kids you should damn well take care of them. I too think either the parents are directly involved or someone is taking their revenge out on the kids for something the parents did. I hope for a happy ending for the kids sake...if the parents are involved they can rot in hell.

My brain automatically wants to look at the parents and wonder what they got into that could have caused this. Especially since they've pretty much stopped cooperating. With past charges of drug offenses and other things, this just looks very poorly for the parents.

I hope they find these girls safe and sound and unharmed.

This may have been posted already but this could be retaliation or some type of forced compliance directed at the parents concerning the dealing of drugs or some other nefarious unseen deeds. This could be to silence the parents from testimony of some type. I hope these girls are found alive as quick as possible.

I agree with Tumbleweed on this. If you get wrapped up in drugs, you become vulnerable on so many levels and in so many ways, limited only by the imagination of the person that thinks you did them wrong.
