A pickup truck crashed into trees in Goliad County, Texas, on Sunday, killing at least 13 people and injuring 10 others, authorities said.
Updated at 5:31 p.m. ET: Fourteen people died after a pickup truck loaded with suspected illegal immigrants veered off the highway and crashed into trees in rural South Texas, authorities said.
State troopers and Goliad County sheriff's investigators were investigating Sunday's crash. A trooper told KRIS-TV, the NBC affiliate in Corpus Christi, Tex., that it appeared a tire on the truck blew out before the vehicle went off the road and struck two trees.
Authorities said they did not immediately know the names and ages of the victims.
Federal officials believe the 23 people riding in the Ford pickup truck were from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
"We suspect at this time it is going to be illegal immigrants that were in the vehicle, based on the way they were traveling,'' said Lt. Glen Garrett of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Reuters reported.
Vehicle laden with passengers
Gerald Bryant, also of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told The Associated Press the dead and wounded were various ages and included at least two young children.
"This is the most people I've seen in any passenger vehicle, and I've been an officer for 38 years," Bryant said.
The pickup was heading north on U.S. 59 around 7 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) Sunday when it traveled off the right side of the highway near the community of Berclair in Goliad County, Bryant said.
The 23 people were loaded inside both the truck's cab and bed.
Six of those who died were still inside the truck when emergency crews arrived to find the mangled vehicle, Bryant said. A man who claimed to have been the driver of the vehicle was ejected but survived, Bryant told the San Antonio Express-News.
He said several of the surviving victims had life-threatening injuries. He did not have their official conditions but described them as "very serious." The injured were taken to various hospitals in San Antonio, Victoria and Corpus Christi. Berclair is about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.
'Very traumatic'
Border Patrol will assist with the investigation, authorities said.

Crash investigators stayed at the scene into the late hours Sunday to assess the crash, which halted traffic on U.S. 59. "It's been very chaotic here, and it's very traumatic," Bryant told the Express-News earlier from the scene. "It's only first responders out here, and it's very solemn."
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

23 people in one truck? My condolences to the families.
Out of those 23, they still didn't let the sober one drive? Ignorance is an art form in Texas.
Roosterboy, you didn't read the article did you? A tire blew out causing the driver to lose control. Where in the article was it mentioned that alcohol was involved? Next time, try sticking to the facts.
Roosterboy, It doesn't say anywhere in the story about the driver drinking. They mentioned a tire blew out. Where did you get your info!?
I cannot believe the driver was going that fast (Looking at the crash scene) with all those people in the bed of the truck. Stupidity at it's utmost.
R.I.P. to the deceased.
Roosterboy...Three things you have no idea about. You don't know if they were drinking. You don't know if they were from Texas and you have no idea about Texans. Perhaps you should just keep to yourself so you can limit the visibility of your ignorance.
Well yea, this wasn't just an F-150.
"The white 2000 Ford F-250 pickup was heading north on U.S. 59 around 7 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) Sunday when it traveled off the right side of the highway near the community of Berclair in Goliad County, Bryant said."
Please learn time zones. If it's 7 p.m. Central time, that would be 8 p.m. ET, not 9. Not relevant I know, but it just stuck out to me. Also, the state police are all over highway 59 24/7 in that part of the state. I find it hard to believe not one of them spotted a small village in the back of a pickup. Wtf?
And how many Americans would pack 23 people into a pick-up truck and go driving in Southern Texas?
I'm sorry people died, but they made the poor choice. How much American taxpayer money is going for their "free" care?
"It's unknown whether or not (the victims) were illegal, but it's possible" My money is on the "illegal" part of it. 8 PM CT, going NORTH, truck loaded to and beyond max. Already 100 mi north of the border, high rate of speed....NUFF SAID!
"Border Patrol will assist with the investigation, authorities said"...Why? All Canadians??
They were probably illegal immigrants, I'm just speculating of course...
Edit: scopata beat me to it.
Border Patrol in that area a couple hundred miles from the border. This road at Berclair is south of San Antonio on the way to Corpus Cristi. So the Border Patrol operating in this area is another way of the gubmint saying they have ceded Texas to the illegals.
Better call for a BAN on trucks with Large Capacity beds and cabs!!! That will stop things like this from happening!!! Just like banning guns would have stopped the shooter in Colorado !! Oh wait guns were banned in that theater, it was a posted FREE FIRE ZONE no guns allowed by LAW ABIDING CITIZENS but he followed the rules so well didn't he. As for them being ILLEGALS I'm betting YES. SEAL THE BORDER NOW and this wouldn't happen as much as it does. All the free care they need may be the straw that breaks the local hospital and then the locals will have to travel farther for care. Its a snow balling problem. Lets turn up the heat and melt the snow ball.
Criminals Love Unarmed victims and DICTATORS Love Unarmed Peasants !!!!
A tire blowing doesn't cause a car to veer off the road unless 1) the vehicle is moving at a very high rate of speed or 2) the driver has diminished capacity. So, while Rooserboy's comment was insensitive, alcohol could have been involved.
With 23 passengers in a small truck no wonder the tire blew out. Then the human cargo shifted and driver lost control of the vehicle. Tragedy for sure, but very preventable.
Driver probably does not have a valid license but THOUGHT they knew how to drive. The reason the cops did not stop them is because our Fed Govt has told the state cops that they cant stop people without having a reason to do so, because otherwise it would be considered "racial profiling" and we dont want that.
@USA.....We may not want it but there are times when it could save lives. Am not saying what it was because I live hundreds of miles away.
usa,
So, a truck bed stuffed with people flying down the road is no reason to pull them over?!
Where I come from, if just "one" person is in the back of the bed while in motion is breaking the law.
These were undoubtedly illegals, Hwy 59 is the closest route between Mexico (Nuevo Larado) and Houston, which is a sanctuary city. Who else would pack 23 people in a pickup truck.
is it legal in TX to ride in an open bed? I know it's not in SC, that would be enough to pull them over I would think.. Also, @ Kasey, since the truck was overloaded it was probably easier than normal to lose control of the vehicle. I go with (1).
How many more trees have to die in the madness? After so many have burned to death this season?
Nothing like having the most votes and being the first to be collapsed. Hello haters. Truth hurts, doesn't it?
Hey Roosterbrain...Ignorance doesn't discriminate, as your post clearly proves.
USA - I find it REAL hard to believe that the cops in texas are taking their orders from the federal govt when it comes to obvious law breaking (people in the back of the truck).
but heck, i wouldnt be shocked if in texas this was allowed - you cant take away peoples freedom to harm their children with their own stupidity! heck no! that's un-'merican!
I wonder if Obama will pay the victims a visit, no problem he can just board air force one to Texas and take Mooshell along for the ride..
Wow..Roosterboy, after reading some of your stupid Liberal Dumbocrat comments, I think you are the one who needs help!
Come on down to TEXAS and we can show you how to be an AMerican!
This is obliviously another tragedy that could have been avoided. Hey Rooster, what has you Dumbocrats done from Jan 2007 through today? Besides drinking koolade and stalling Congress!
Let us get that on NBC TV for a week and check out the drivers history of this "killer", then have a prayer vigil, this should have the same attention as the 12 dead in Colorado instead of making just that situation a hero case up there.
I can not believe the politics involved with one, so idiots like the shooter can come forward and get attention in the future.---like Waco situation.
12 and 11 people dead in the 2 cases, hopefully are equally important, and I wish the news of both situation, gives the same attention why someone was killed--whether it was an accident or just police shootings (2-3 every day), or deranged people going hunting.
Yes my first question would be as well why so many "people" in one truck ---and what would 2-6 month trained police be able to do, except race (never following any law) and kill more by racing or shoot the public!
It is illegal to transport minors (under 18) in the bed of a pickup truck in Texas. The article didn't say whether the children were outside or inside. But, it is likely they would have been stopped for having 23 passengers, or operating an unsafe vehicle if they had encountered a cop. That would be grounds enough to pull over a group that may have appeared to be illegal. But much of Texas (like this area) is very sparsely populated...not much law enforcement (or anybody) around.
Just wow. Some of you have posted the stupidest comments I've seen in a while. You have the one illiterate guy who saw 'tire blown out' and though it meant 'drunk driver'. You have the 'Man with No Clue' who took a car crash and used it to whine about gun control. Oh and then my favorite, the guy who wants to b*tch about the Fed government ruling police are unable to pull someone over for no reason. Um, I kinda thought that was a good thing, bro.
Actually I'm pretty sure your comment was meant to be something related to the recent Supreme Court vs Arizona thing. You probably assumed you'd say something witty about how the government is preventing cops from pulling over people who look Mexican to ask about immigration status. Thing is, the Supreme Court says the cops are allowed to ask for papers during a lawful stop. As if pulling over a pickup truck with 23 people loaded into it isn't lawful reason enough.
Jessica with your American (redneck) crack. In case you haven't noticed, most people on here seem to think they were Mexican illegals.
Twelve die in a shooting, and it's all over the news and will be there for weeks. Thirteen (probable) "illegals" die in a car crash, and it gets a blip by comparison. Is it because dying in a car accident is somehow less tragic? Or is it because we imagine that Mexican lives aren't worth as much as American lives? Either way, the hypocrisy of the media and the audience is downright profane.
It's a POSSIBILITY that they were illegals. Everyone in Texas knows that putting people in the bed of a truck is a citation. Mexicans still do this quite often in their own country. Prayers for those passed and still trying to stay alive. Check your tires, because there is so much riding on your vehicle.
Possible?.......lol. On the other side......they are now getting free medical care. They should have taken them to a hospital in Mexico and dumped them off. And for all you bleeding heart liberals, I have NO sympathy.
23 illegals in a truck, so what's new? If they hadn't crashed I would be standing behind them at Walmart while they spent their food stamp money.
Shandral needs to stop.
Why? Because she shows compassion?
We CLEARLY need more government rules and regulations here!! A truck is a very dangerous weapon and must be closely regulated by the federal government. The FIRST thing we need to do is force truck manufacturers to install spikes in the bed to make it impossible for a person (let alone more than one) to sit in the bed of a truck. Next we need to remove all seats from inside the truck to make sure only two people can be in a truck at a time. Afterall, a truck is a dangerous weapon and by allowing more than two people to sit in a truck at one time creates a situation where many deaths can occur. This is simply common sense and we need the government to limit and control the number of people that can be seated in a truck!!And why don't we force vehicles to not be allowed to drive over 20 mph? Nobody needs to drive THAT fast. THAT IS DANGEROUS!! Common sense controls of number of seats and speed restrictions are needed to limit the number of deaths caused by trucks!!
Now that I have your attention, and you are wondering what in the heck my rant was about, I will tell you now I was being facetious. I was trying to make the point that sometimes people do stupid things. This idiot used a truck not for its intended purpose. Many people were unfortunately killed but we are not talking about limiting the use of trucks are we? So why is it when a gun is not used for its intended purpose so many begin the illogical arguments that more government regulations and limiting the number of rounds a magazine can hold as a valid solution? Isn't limiting the number of rounds in a magazine similar to limiting the seats in a truck? Isn't limiting the number of rounds in a magazine similar to limiting the speed a vehicle can go?
Trucks are not the problem. The very rare instance of an unstable person is. Guns are not the problem. The very rare instance of an unstable person is.
@Shandral-
maybe, just maybe, it's because the victims of the shooting are VICTIMS of a violent senseless crime; the people who died in the accident, had a flat tire.
Flat tire v. mass murder...hmmmm... which would be more newsworthy? DUH
Wow, 13 people die in a car crash and the only thing some people are worried about is whether the victims were legal or "deserving" of care. Would you be happy if the hurt were left on the road to fend for themselves? I sure hope you don't consider yourselves "christians", because Christ would be ashamed of you.
After reading most of the comments here, I can only conclude that human decency is on vacation. It must feel good to share your hatred for the less fortunate with the world. Probably makes you feel important.
Shandral - I hardly think that deaths due to an automobile ACCIDENT compares to a willful MASSACRE of innocent people by a psycho-killer. There is no hypocracy except in your own mind.
Sanity Check
So is human trafficking especially of minors so my guess is the driver from Houston, had no concerns about the laws in the US figuring that he would hit the Greater Houston area after dark where someone else would take over his cargo and pay him for yet another human trafficking job done well.
According to other sources they suspect that the cargo was from Mexico. According to other sources the car that stopped to render aid recalls victims calling for their mothers. My guess is many of the injured and dead were children who parents had arranged and paid for them to be trafficked into this country through unscrupulous means.
Yes this case of senseless death should be front page along with the ensuing investigation to highlight how pervasive human trafficking is in the United States. Parents who pay the cartels or other underground entrepreneurs to bring their children to America.
We can believe that there are many more criminals than just the cargo and the adults in the truck...there are criminals that would receive these people. There are criminals who paid the coyotes to traffic their children to this country without regard for their safety.
The biggest criminals in this event are the Foreign Parents who have paid to have their kids brought here...It is time that we stand up and say no more. No more accepting the criminal behavior in people who traffic in human flesh. No more accepting the Illegal Immigrants who carelessly allow their children to be in the company of criminals to come to this country so that the parents can have some sort of perception of legitimacy and welfare in any US city. No More allowing Central America, South America, China, any given African Nation etc. to dump their cast off in the US. Patch these folks up, jail the driver and any that they can catch in the smuggling ring, jail the family members who put up the money to support this effort and deport the rest. Seize their assets, charge the countries of origin for the medical care their citizens received and make a point to those who will jump the fence that we are done. Come here legally and honor your visa's and our laws and value for human life or don't come. When children are dying because because their family is greedy for American goods and services we can say enough is enough.
World.idiocracy:
I disagree, I think this accident and a massacre DO compare and identified why in my post above. When a person uses a several ton vehicle in an unsafe manner it doesn't matter whether it was intentional or not. Whether this person loaded a truck in an clearly unsafe manner and had an "accident" or intentionally plowed into a parade is irrelevant as to whether we decide to produce and make trucks anymore. The difference? One is a more serious crime than the other and the legal system forces those who "massacre" with more serious penalties.
Whether the truck was intentionally used to kill 13 people or just incompetence does not change the decision on whether to produce trucks or not. Or whether to put restrictions on who can BUY a truck or not. Same with guns. Whether a person goes hunting and accidentally shoots three people who looked like deer from a distance or a person kicks down a door and kills three people does not alter the decision on whether to sell guns or put further restrictions. The LEGAL system penalizes those who intentionally hurt others more than "accidents". Whether this was a truck OR a gun makes no difference. The level of the crime changes the PENALTY involved and not whether a truck or a gun should be restricted.
If the people in the car were ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS, the owner of the truck in Houston needs to be prosecuted for transporting them and he should be required to pay for all medical care incurred!
So why was Boarder Patrol Called?
Well it was because many or most (maybe all) of the victims could only speak spanish. It is also reported that many were crying out for water which is usually the case for boarder jumpers. The are shacked up some where without food or water them moved somewhere else.
There is more reported on other sites but of course MSNBC just reports the minimum when it suits them. Now if a gun had been involved the MSNBC would have all types of crazy headlines along with reports bending the truth. They were just moving these illegals into a liberal state so they could vote come Nov
Spellchecker you got me to think..............I don't believe the average F250 has 23 seat belts.
Over load a truck 2x3 its capacity and a tire blows (that should be expected) yes the truck will go out of control, if it was a rear tire the suspension probably collapsed as well, what were these idiots who loaded these people on a truck thinking... This is a disaster I guess Obama will have to go Visit the area, I guess we will have to outlaw P/U Trucks, is Ralph Nader still around he can handle the job of outlawing pickups he has had allot of experience killing American industries, and making America safe to live in, remember the convertible, if you wanted one you had to buy a import he could not outlaw them. yes we need to take vehicles out of the hands of the public, or make gas to expensive to buy. maybe that's it it took the income of two dozen people to come up with enough gas to get from one town to the next. sorry they didn't make it I hate a senseless waste of life. illegals or not.
I forgot to mention that many people in a p/u is not a secure load that would add to the problem, how did they get that many people in it? this is something you only see at the circus, that's equal to a half a platoon or a small Mexican village. it would be crowded in a five ton troop truck, I guess we will have to start buying these people some school buses. how much tequila was found at the scene? did they have luggage and chickens with them? what a disaster Obama better get down there and fix this. its a terriblewaste. I'm sorry if I sound rude but this is bazaar everybody knows you can only put 18 Mexicans in a 3/4 ton truck, and that's only if you have 3 ft racks to keep them in it. these people can't even follow the loading instructions, RIP.
I see a lot of people upset over some posts saying that human "life" is more important than whether someone is an illegal immigrant............. You are correct.
However, there are millions of AMERICANS out of work due to illegal immigrants coming over and working for less then half the salary per hour.
Lets average minimum wage at $7.50 hr. and do the math in a perfect world............
If everything was perfect, there would be no illegal immigration (Now we don't have to pay border patrol millions possibly billions a yr.) which would make minimum wage jump $2 hr. ($9.50)
No outsourcing of products>>>>>>> Minimum wage jumps $4 hr. ($13.50)
No gangs and drug trafficking so the police & jails we "hardly needed" and just about empty>>>>>>>minimum wage jumps $10 hr ($23.50)
I can go on forever till minimum wage could and should be $60.00 hr. but, having to pay Border Patrol to keep out illegal immigrants out, Police to keep it safe, Thugs in jail etc... is eating up our economy.
So, for you guys that think some people on here are heartless, walk a mile in there shoes before you can post your comment. AND, I'll bet my paycheck that there are illegal immigrants reading and posting on here..... Just sayin'
In Hawaii it is 100% legal if they are over 18. I have seen 10 people in the back of a f150 there. I have also seen 17 people in a Subaru.
Kasey 2952831 and those who voted for your Rooster comment...do you forget, a few years back, those that died/injured while driving Ford Explorers that flipped when their tire blew out. No alcohol, no excessive high speed, just bad handling. Next time, drive a Chevy loaded with wetbacks...
No animals were hurt in the making of this story.
Are you saying that is a good or bad thing?
Some basics about smuggling undocumented immigrants: (1) they lie in the bed of the truck, stacked like wood. Twenty+ seated, visible folks attract unwanted attention from law enforcement; (2) they didn't drive, stacked like wood, all the way from the border. Rather, their coyote probably dropped them in ranch land, made them walk a good distance to circumvent the slightly-more-southern Border Patrol checkpoints, and picked them up again on the other side. Thus, they were 100 miles from the border, driving as the cover of dark approached, on the highway headed straight to Houston. It's a good bet that the truck, registered to a Houston owner, was stolen.
Tires only blow when they are totally worn out. This is usually a vehicle that has not had any maintenance in a long while.
Anything is possible. Pigs might literally be able to fly out of my butt given the right circumstances.
I blame Obama. If it weren't for his amnesty by fiat we wouldn't have trucks packed to the gills with illegals trying to make it into the heart of the USA before a new government is elected in November that rescinds all of his illegal executive orders. Even the illegals know Obama and the Democrats are doomed.
BP the grape
Tires "blow" when they are over loaded/stressed. It can happen to brand new tires as well. That is why they have a load rating which is based on proper inflation. A turn applying excessive pressure sideways can easily cause a blowout... 23 people = 3500 to 4000 lbs in a vehicle designed to handle 3900 MAX new is easily going to lose control at highway speed in a turn, handle poorly and apply loads well beyond standard tire ratings. That is especially true with a load that shifts about vs being secured in one place.
Everyone seems to want to blame the presupposed "illegals" coming into the country, but has anyone asked anything about the driver, who was very likely working for an American company bringing these workers in to work for them? Don't say it doesn't happen, because there are numerous reports of small and large companies sending "scouts" down to bring back illegal workers. Who is to blame? The people looking for a better life, or the owner looking to save money by "bending" the law? (I say bending because there is no consequences in most states for hiring illegals).
This accident could be voided if we don't let illegals cross the borders. There are thousand of them who die asphyxiated in trucks with no air, in the hand of unscrupulous "coyotes" who use this kind of transportation to smug illegal immigrats . However this administration closing in Texas Borders Check Points and fighting against any state who dare to deal with illegal immigration.
http://myhighplains.com/fulltext/?nxd_id=284092
23 people in this vehicle?
You can't fix stupid. This was avoidable.
I heard our leaders want to give them all work permits, section 8 housing, and food stamps. Our leaders are also on their way to their home countries to personally apologize over the accident.
Futureshock...yes it is the illegal immigrants fault that they paid an unscrupulous person to smuggle them into America. It is the family's fault for the death of the children who are smuggled into this country. It is further the fault of the home countries that do no care for their citizens so that they feel a need to jump the border for a life in America without checking in at the border.
I think you have that wrong....Cartels smuggle illegals into this country as a lucrative arm of their underground businesses. Individuals collude to bring illegals in this country as a black market business and could care less if their cargo is safe or even alive. I think if an organization or business were to come under scrutiny it is probably the SEIU. I think they are very willing to cover-up for their members who are in the country illegally and I wouldn't be too surprised if they helped them cross any number of borders. I don't know too many high profile American companies that are willing to risk the exposure to federal prosecution and the fines. I know there are many in our area that turn to e-verify to assure they have done all that is needed to hire an individual with a right to work.
Seal the borders = avoidable.
This is a story because of the number of people who were killed. The stories you don't hear about are the number of American citizens in the border states who are killed by drivers like this. What if it had been a car full of teenagers they had run into instead of a tree. ALL of it is avoidable.
Futureshock,
Why would an American company have someone drive all the way down to the border to pick up a bunch of illegals when all he really needs to do is pull up to a Home Depot or Lowes just down the street?
To usa1967, post 1.33; Yes! Yours is the best post I've read so far. Will see alot more of this if Obama remains.
23 idiot illegals, I have zero sympathy. In fact, looks like we taxpayers are going to be saving money on food stamps, welfare, education, and medical expenses.
In local reports now 14 have died...seems they were from Mexico, Guatemala and some other undeveloped country. The driver if the truck died, he did not own the truck. Several in the truck were children.
So let's make this very clear. We do not want this in Texas. We do not want the sort of irresponsible person that would have their children smuggled here. Those are not our values and we do not need that here in Texas.
So to be more precise....from this point on I do believe that any children under the age of 18, who die in the commission of human trafficking into the United States should be called "Obama's Children". This is the legacy he wished for America but it is his legacy alone. The Dream Act, no it is a nightmare that will see a rising epidemic of children die in the commission of human trafficking. Making a promise to these parents who have no regard for the safety of their children that if they can go undetected until they reach the age of 18 they can work toward citizenship. So how many babies is Obama willing to see dead in order to allow others, in this country illegally, to have citizenship.
This is the outcome of dangling a free pass into America. You get the deaths of children who's parent's care more about the benefits and completely disregard the devestating risks..."Obama's Children".
And I just came from Walmart and saw hundreds of illegals pushing giant loads of food. I guess the story here is how many illegals can you cram into one vehicle?
This is not unique, the human traffickers squash as many as they can into houses and vehicles. 110 in a small house near McAllen, suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion. This sort of accident is also not unique, last week another overstuffed vehicle accident, think nine were killed in that one.
Not too much mention made of the illegal slaves squashed hundreds to a big rig trailer, no mention of how many are caught in Texas with no air, no water, no sanitation for hours on end in the brutal Texas heat. Many die and unless the numbers of dead aren't as high as what happened in this story, the story only makes local news. The Border Patrol is called in on these 'accidents' because the area is rife with human smuggling.
That area is a major smuggling route, Goliad is on the way to the coast and lots of human slavers are in business in the area. Note I said slavers because that is what is happening. Obama is promoting slavery, child prostitution and slavery and death with his non-action on the borders. Before some Obama supporter goes off and quotes the "Obama has deported more illegals' BS, that is a BS story. The numbers are rigged, ICE and the BP no longer bother doing much of anything. Why? Because Obama and Holder have essentially told them not to. Catch and release and all the while the bodies pile up.
Txmom has it exactly right.
I want to know how much that cost us real taxpayers in medical cost alone. several med-flights,hospital care, body storage. I bet the cost will end up being over 500,000 dollars. i am tired of them wasteing my money.
Driving with that many people in one truck is super stupid and multiply that times 23 and you have a one big pile of stupid.
trust_verify #1.56, good post on the effect the overload had on the tire blowout. You left out one important fact about the tires. The heat from the asphalt in S. TX is very hard on tires to begin with.
Speaking of overloads, guess who's paying the medical at all the American Hospitals they're at?
American taxpayers! That's who..
I am sorry for the loss of life and grave injuries that occurred. However, they should be sent back once stabilized and Americans shouldn't have to pay for their medical and "probable" illegal entry.
stc1993
I'll acknowledge your point... thought I mentioned ideal roads... I believe most tires are tested to the same standards as the entire vehicle... An afternoon trip on the LA freeway 75 degrees and not rain.
Wonder if the lawyers are lining up to sue the tire company for the blow out... We know they already have clients from last weeks CO shootings.
Brilliant. So if we stop illegal immigration, tires will suddenly become immortal and never blow? Um yeah, you go with that, genius.
I swear the stupidity level of the rhetoric on here today has reached epic proportions. The replies to the very first comment on here have pretty much covered
illegal immigration
gun control
marijuana legalization
Obamacare
welfare and food stamps
vehicle maintenance
carrying capacity of a F150
Walmart
And the shooting in Aurora
Message to OBAMANATION - THE BLOOD IS ON YOUR HANDS !!!Vote for the Republicans in November for a real change !!!
Nuff said...
I'm not going to try to change anyone's opinion on here, it can't be done, but for everyone calling these people idiots and so forth, please remember that the majority of them were children and had no say as to whether they were going into the truck or not. We don't have to have sympathy for adults, but surely you can muster a tiny bit of sympathy for some little ones.
@ ivy, Madison - We wouldn't be having this discussion if these folks had not broken the law coming to this country, then overloading a pick-up truck to take them where ever. We are rewarding their lawlessness with free health care. There was a wonderful E mail circulating some time ago called "Take Down the Bird feeder." It would do you well to read it. America need to take the bird feeder down and stop spending billions on Illegals. They are nothing but a drain on the American Taxpayers and take jobs away from Americans.
The people of South Texas are lucky the driver veered into a tree and not another car. I don't know who the ringleader was, but someone made the decision to put that many people into a vehicle which probably exceeds the max cargo weight (don't really know without more details). That decision put everyone else on the road at risk. I wonder if people would still feel sorry for these assumed illegals if they had hit a car carrying a family instead of a tree.
For the record, anyone who overloads a vehicle puts others at risk - whether the cargo is human or not. Same goes for vehicle maintenance. Accidents and unexpected failures are going to happen no matter what, but it is our responsibility as drivers/owners to try to minimize the occurrence of failure by following the guidelines of our vehicles.
Svenolafson
Pigs might literally be able to fly out of my butt given the right circumstances.
Id pay good money to see that.
These illegals are overruning our border states and costing us billions in hospital costs, school costs, and the cost of locking them up. Secure the border and if you have to shoot a couple of thousand of them to get the message across to the rest, then so be it. If your country sucks, change it, but dont come up here and make our country suck too. If Obama had any sense, which he doesnt, he would tax 50% of every dollar they send back to Mexico.
Our GOVERNMENT is what is costing us billions but they blame it on this type of thing and everyone buys it up!! Since when are politicians honest? Our government taxes everything and then wastes the money on their own lavish lifestyles......
Its sad that all those people had to die. I guess they paid the ultimate price. very sad. btw. not every person South of the Border is Mexican, it's sad that people on here show just how mis-imformed they are, try picking up a globe and exploring the land that is to the south of us.
yall have a problem with illegals coming over here? Okay- what about all the people from China coming here, those Bas$&%s are living off of us getting tax breaks and a stamp in their pass-ports. Theres a little china town in all the major cities. they are the one taking this country over and we are letting it happen day by day. that makes me sick
See what I mean....You are right it is not just the illegal immigrants from south or even way south of our border. It is all of the illegal immigrants from the Presidents Welfare Auntie and his drunk Uncle to Obama's children who have died in transits through the roadways and deserts and yes it is the growing human trafficking enterprise into America as a whole. It is the Chinese affluent who take trips to the US so their children can obtain a US birth certificate. It is the Cartels and Gangs who entice young women to come only to enslave them as prostitutes to serve the illegal immigrant communtiy. It's the grotesque who traffic in cheap labor from South East Asia. It is the stupidity of those who come here on Student Visa's under the guise of helping their own countries rise out of poverty only to overstay their Visa's and live off of our system in the shadows.
We have a problem and it is time that we fix it not make it worse through promise of citizenship or holes in our border protection that allows the worst of the worst from around the world to infect our country with welfare or crime.
HELL, I thought it was a bunch of ignorant hicks, but still waiting for more info, but I guess even they are not that stupid or at least I hope they aren't. See anyone can toss some insults.
Heads: a bunch of whacky school kids out having fun. Tails: Mexicans going to/from the fields. TAILS.
Considering it's Texas, I'm going Heads. Sorry.
Considering it's S.Texas, common sense says it's tails.
Apparently Texas love stereotypes.... Not surprising.
Heads: human beings. Tails: human beings.
MJ1986
Of course you comment is not a "stereotype" of Texans is it? The story stated that the police did not know if they were illegals but that Border Patrol was assisting in the investigation.
TAILS!!!! and if you pack 23 people in a 6 pax vic. its your own fault!!! TARDS
All of you involved in the debate over whether it heads or tails are a bunch of jackasses anyway. Portraying a coin toss over whether it was "wacky school kids" or "Mexicans" who were killed? It shouldn't matter to you right now who they were. You should have some respect and perhaps some compassion. If not for the people who were stuffed in this vehicle, then at least show some respect for their families and friends who are grieving for the victims.
Jack...not sure if you've ever been on here before but this is how they are on here! I see it all of the time! I've only read the first two sections of remarks and can't believe I haven't seen that it's Obama's or Bush's fault!!!
All I'm going to say is 23 people if the averag weight was 100 lb that would be the weight of a small car being carried anyone see a problem with that? RIP to those that lost their lives.
Those who take satisfaction in the deaths of these people are far less desirable than the "illegals" they denigrate and whose deaths they apparently celebrate. People are people, people matter or at least they SHOULD matter. Who are we to judge the value of ANY life? Who knows the potential of any of those who died? The most humble beginnings have produced people who changed the world for the better.
My condolences to all involved.
"... then at least show some respect for their families and friends who are grieving for the victims."
That's why we're using English. From the demand for Spanish in America we can't be hurting their feelings.
I feel sorry for the family & friends of the deceased but from what I've read they were more than likely illegals & God did us all a favor by killing them off like that before they had a chance to become parasites in our great country! They deserved what they got!!
Could be a bunch of Mexican school kids on the way to the fields?
MJ, stereotypes exist for a reason. Come live in Texas and maybe you'll be less judgemental over someone else's comment. I personally am going with heads-illegals heading into the country or tails-illegals heading home from a party. Why else would 26 people be in one truck? Especially with small children.
There's a weight rating on tires. Retreads less than originals. Poorly maintained vehicle and there could be extra strain on one tire. Niether Texans nor illegals can be expected to read all that well. They can't be expected to understand there are limits to equipment. 23 folks at 160lbs each is 3,700 lbs. Any tools or personal belongings and there's 2 tons in a truck that was never rated for it. Highway speed and it's a death trap.
Here you go Cheryl......It's all obama's fault as his voter base was racing to the poll center with no IDs to be first in line to cast the illegal votes!. Couldn't let you go away disapointed!!! have a nice day:)
Can we have a media fest over this? After all more people died in this accident than in the CO shooting.......
My thoughts exactly NC open heart - surely we can get a sympathetic media to swarm down there and justify the flight of illegals into the US because of the horrific conditions in their homelands. If we're lucky, they will post the tear-jerking life stories of each of the "victims" of the crash, villify the driver, Ford Motor Company, the tire manufacturer, and the authorities (police & Border Patrol), then destroy anyone who says anything truthful about the entire situation...
After all, that's what we allow the media to do here in the US...
Chicago Mob -Politics NEVER let a good Crises not get spun against the right!!
OMG== Obama Must GO!!!
LOL===Leave obama LEAVE!!!
NC and Dean, the different is that one is a vehicular accident and one is a massacre. If you don't know the difference, then there is no hope for either of you.
IReadyou - "Niether Texans nor illegals can be expected to read all that well. They can't be expected to understand there are limits to equipment."
I know you think us country folk down here don't know much and kaint read -n- rite so well. But your comments give insight to the small mind some of you have to generate unnecessary and rediculous thoughts which fall out your head like a mouth with no filter. You are another one of those people who know nothing of Texas and her citizens. With industries such as NASA (this one is fading), Military (largest base), large deposits of Oil and Gas, largest Wind Farms, Agriculture (various forms), thousands of acres of refineries, shipping channel and too many others to list I think most of us have mastered the abc's & 123's so keep your comments to yourself until you are a little more educated on the matter. This post is NOT about Texas or politics. It is about a seriously overloaded vehicle losing control (to be expected when you pile 23 people in a vehicle designed for 6) and many being killed. I know this stretch of highway and more than likely it was mule picking up illegals on an evening run to cross the border and get as far away as fast as they can. But I do not know enough about this developing story so that would make that my opinion.
No shaking my head they are both homicides. When you drive a vehicle and are negligent as in grossly overloading the truck which is careless then it becomes vehicular homicide. More than likely the driver was a coyote(illegal transporter) and could care less about the safety of the people. All they care about is the money
Ghost in a local article it was stated that BP was called due to many victims only spoke spanish. It also stated that many were asking for water which is common when injured but also more common for the boarder jumpers as they have been on the run for days and have not eaten or drank much in their trek
There was even a crash like this in NJ some years back. Granted there were not as many people in the vehicle but it was a Dodge Caravan minivan loaded with 12 or 14 people(adults) which crashed on the Turnpike or Parkway. There is even a video on youtube I saw a while back with police pulling over a vehicle loaded with illegals and they just kept pouring out of it and running in every direction, I could not believe they could fit so many in one car. It was like the circus
@Cheryl Its Bush's fault reason being its in Texas for one and two if you ask Obama that is what he would tell you. and if the Dems had their way those people would have all been in their own new car or p/u truck. thus this never would have happened. damn Repubs are always holding down the minority races. those people should not even be forced to work in the fields they should all get their immigration entitlement checks and benefits so they can go to school and become good Americans. yes they should all have a house a car food, utilities, medical and a education.
Thanks fishman. I do not really know too much about the story yet, but I assume given the area it was probably a coyote or mule at the pick up point taking them to a safe house or somewhere. You seem to know more than I do, I will take your word for it.
Dean A. Glenn......excellent post.
Judging by these comments, it is true what they say about this country is in decline. And I'm not just talking about our economy...
In AZ. it isw illegal to ride in the back of a PU, however you see it near the indian reservations all the time. The police do not seem to bother them.
donnwalker9443
judge someone from an avatar pic? such class...
It's a shame that it was not a head-on collision with another pick-up loaded with 23 other Illegal criminal aliens.
46 would have been a better number.
My heart goes out to ALL of the victims and their families. These are people that died you fricken crazy heartless freaks!! Mexican or whatever!! This is still a tragedy. What is wrong with people these days? A bunch of KKK from the sounds of it......
Yeah, what Michael72 said
The rest of you make me sick and are a joke to the human race.
donnwalker9443, it's so obvious you are aroused by my pic since you want to start @!$%# with me all the time. But sorry to break it to you, I'm taken. So your teasing isn't going to work against the person I have waiting at home.
donnwalker9443......you sound like a real asset to mankind......KARMA for all the heartless souls may this never happen to you or your family.
the people were from south america, not all spanish people are mexicans-learn how to read, you claim to be so smart but truly you show how stupid you are
That many people in 1 truck usually means it was full of illegals being transported....I am only sad that there were children on board.
Of course... Stereotypes are always right.
So, if they were illegal immigrants they deserved to die?
No but it wouldn't have happened if they had been following the law and not been there in the first place.
Either way, they illegally had too many passengers in the truck...
It is because they have no idea about our laws and do not care. They put their children in harm's way.
Well-Its sad =Yet My Money is on #1-all Mexicans =#2= likely Illegals- Ive seen those types so many times pack them in a car / truck like =cantelopes going to market.Typical. Just Stupid people!!!!!!!!
This country is broke and a lot of our jobs have been out sourced South of the Border and to the rest of the world but still they come. We aren't the answer to the worlds problems and have nothing more to give.
Texas Grace: Laws schmaws. Any time 23 people get in one truck and go at highway speeds down the road they have got to know they are taking an irrational chance. Common sense says it's a disaster waiting to happen. Don't need a law, don't need a seminar to train you. If it was intended to put 23 people in a truck there'd be more seating than just 3, more seat belts than just three. We call them responsible adults. Out of the 23 there were no responsible adults. It's a tragedy. No child deserves dying or becoming an orphan that way. But sometimes no adult steps forward and takes charge and the idiots among us do their damage. It's not the law's fault.
Wake up folks. The bordedrland is a WAR ZONE!!!!
many say illegal immigrants like they were from another world or something. They were in this country long before many of your people came here...
justme227 - wanna bet a $2 on that? Besides even if so ... most immigrants came here LEGALLY and learned English, blended in with the United States. The immigrants of which you speak came through the front door and did not sneak into this country and then shout at you in a foreign language to learn how to speak their language! (yes it has happened to me!) Besides (again) old argument. We won! Remember 1848? Mexican-American War ring a bell? (old argument)
Danielle...
People die everyday, I am sure that very few of them thought they deserved to die, but it is a natural process and is usually outside the controll of those dying.
23 in a pickup traveling at speed. This may just make the record books for the 2012 darwin awards.
@Justme227, No they were not, they snuck across the border, they grew up in a different country and probably entered the country without permission and that makes them Illegal Alliens if thats the case. just the same as if you were to go to some other country and live there without proper documentation then you would be a illegal allien the only difference is other countries would throw you in prison where we only send them home. you do realize that there are legal means to enter the country.
@justme Besides after the little argument we had with Santa Ana where we acquired Texas and other states the US compensated Mexico for the land that is now part of the US, yes we bought it from them, and they accepted the payment, also had we not that region would still be divided up amongst the higher Hispanic aristocrats and the Indian and mixed Indian populations would still be treated as second class citizens that's just the way Mexico is they have their problems and race issues just like every other country, Mexico is far from a poor country they just don't take care of certain elements of their population. there money is in the hands of their aristocrats. they don't care about others. why do you think they fight all the time. Mexico is like old Europe, the Hispanics and the Mexicans are two different breeds, and they don't treat the indigenous population verywell. stuff that in your pipe. and on another note most of the Mexicans that lived north of the Rio Grand fought on the side of Texas not Mexico so they too wanted Independence from Mexico, nobody stolid the land they just threw out a bad ruler. did you know Santa Ana thought he was a God, he believed he was a Mayan sun God, and a warrior the Napoleonof the west, he was wrong on all counts, Texas joined the Union long after all this happened, it was the lone star republic till around the time of our civil war. the point is borders have been established and they have to be respected. Mexico has no valid claim on US soil.
Illegals need to stay home.
justme - Illegal aliens is a perfectly legal term for someone in a country illegally. As for them being here longer than I have...then they have been here WAY too long already.
I was caught behind a fender bender accident in Houston a few years ago. I counted fourteen mexicans crawling out of the Ford station wagen. I thought that was impossible, but 26 in one vehicle is hard to believe.
I loathe dissemination of misinformation. What's worse is, 4 ppl voted up this historically inaccurate acct. Just that one sentence I quoted ought to ring a bell & tell you it's incorrect! Good grief. Educational fail.
D Buck
Just FYI, Texas was a Republic from 1836 until 1845 when they were admitted to the Union as the 28th State. We have the prettiest women, the friendliest people, the best Bar-B-Que, the most oil, the most cattle, the biggest mosquitos, and the worst climate of any state in the Union. The cold on the plains west of Amarillo will freeze the nuts off a brass monkey, the heat in Del Rio will burn the nuts off a brass monkey, all in all, brass monkeys do not do well in the State of Texas, but for the rest of us, tap the keg and fire up the pit, its party time!
just me-bout time somebody realized what the real deal is, south americans are just Indians that have had their land stolen just like the Natives in the Northern areas from the border, they have a right to be here more so than most of these fools making these horrible comments. Wars were waged by people that came over on boats hundreds of years ago. killling their way through this land- this land has their blood on it. those are human laws that were made, not the laws of nature
Steve - you left out largest Wind Generator Farms. Not sure if you have been to Amarillo, then head due south and you will see them stretching for miles the entire way.
Depending on where you live winter can have a wicked cold sting and it does really matter where you live during summer, just freakin hot. I have been to nearly every state in the US, beautiful places and good people, but I would not want to live anywhere else.
I wish Walter Cronkite was still reporting even from where he is right now, I'm certain the news would be better.
I'm sure he is but we can't get that channel.
I am sure the news would be just as liberal biased, if Walter was still around.
EVERY time there is a story regarding illegal immigrants then all the racists come out to add their disgusting comments. I read many different stories from this site but this is the type that gets the most comments.....pretty disgusting really that people are still so very racist. It is 2012 and still nothing much has changed.........white people really feel as though they are a supreme race yet they are the most heartless and judgemental. Not to mention a bunch of brainwashed sheep......WHITE POWER!! NOT!!!
michael72 you are exactully right-I'm white and Native American, and to read what these people write is just horrible. South Americans (Indians) deserve the same liberties as anyone else, one including respect. Why do whites think they are so much better? Yall feel good about stealing people's land and killing off the population, then claiming something as your own? You must feel so good about yourseld, getting something that you didn't work for, you sound like welfare people to me
Seewhat I mean....I'm beginning to think that you are about 12. I am sure if you actually studied your Native American roots you would find that they at some point gained territory and land through some sort of aggressive action...like well war, aggressive acts of wanton violence to expand territory. Truly, the white man as you like to call us are not different than any tribal culture...we just seemed to be better at it that say the Native Americans or the Inca's or Mayan,s. To that point many of the South and Central American people are derived from a mix of cultures evolving from the Inca and Mayan who had no history of occupying any part of the United States. So perhaps they should stay in their ancestral lands. Because we are still pretty darn good at war.
Going out to drink and drive around is all there is to do for fun in south Texas. Having said that, there's no way even a bunch of drunk Texans would put 23 people in one pickup. They were illegals, and that crash just saved the state of Texas a LOT of welfare money. Would've lived longer in their own country.
What a stupid post. You have no idea who they are. And, growing up in small town USA, this could've happened anywhere. Please stop blaming on illegals, until more facts are known. Use logic.
"...give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses..."
MJ, did you not read the article? Does this sentence mean nothing to you? "Border Patrol will assist with the investigation, authorities said."
Border Patrol involved= Illegals. The End.
Ah, Jake, you win the prize! I was just scrolling down see who was going be the first yahoo to say it! And, it was YOU!
It does not matter whether or not if they are illegals. They are humans that are dead, hurt, and bleeding. What are we to do, leave them on the side of the road to die like roadkill? I read that there were children. Would you hold children accountable for the actions of their parents? Would you really deny help to a frightened, injured child, or anybody, for that matter?
Grow a heart Jake! The problems with illegals will not be dealt with by denying compassion to others.
I have seen this type of overcrowding of vehicles in Mexico.
Jake first of all there are plenty of things to do in South Texas besides drinking a driving, but that is not even the point here. People are dead. We don't know where they are from and it shouldn't matter. I am all for border control and harsh penalties for illegals, but that isn't the point here either. It's reactions like yours and some of the others on this forum that make me embarrassed to be an American sometimes. People have no compassion or respect. You are talking about children who had no choice to be in that vehicle. I'm sure if it were your family you wouldn't be so judgemental right now. So why not show some class and let all the details come out before you start making statements that are factually incorrect.
Don't be surprised if Texas doesn't end up being sued over this for some stupid reason. Big question now is how many instant millionaires are in the group of survivors.
"They are humans that are dead, hurt, and bleeding"
You can work an extra two hours to help fund the healing.
cheetah---- NO I CAN NOT work an extra 2 hours to fund the healing!!!!!! I'm a truck driver I already work up to 14 hours a day. I get to sit down and watch TV with my wife for 30 minutes a day if I'm lucky. I see my kids for an hour in the mornings before they go to school as I'm getting them ready. They have been in bed for 2 hours before I get home at night. I go to bed at midnight and am up by 5 am 3 days a week one of which is my day off so I can drive my Father-in-law to Dialysis. I'll be working tonight until it gets to dark to see on projects around his house that he can't do any more. NOW WHEN EXACTLY AM I GONNA HAVE 2 HOURS TO DONATE TO A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO COME HERE ILLEGALLY, DON"T RESPECT MY COUNTRY OR OUR LAWS OR OUR PEOPLES RIGHT TO KEEP WHAT WE HAVE EARNED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There. Had you donated your time as a professional driver, none of this would have happened - it's all Scott's fault.
LOL :)
But it didn't save the state from having to pay for the hospital bills of those that survived. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that it was a bunch of illegals and those that think otherwise are idiots. The time, speed, and number of people in the vehicle says it all.
Guess who will get to pay the hospital bills for the survivors. Do illegals have to buy insurance under Obamacare?
Hard to buy insurance for a vehicle if you have no valid license in the US. So, for you people who believe illegals' only crime is sneaking across the border, think about that - driving without a license and having no insurance on your vehicle are crimes in most states, and every time they get behind the wheel, they are taking your life into their hands - and if you are unfortunate enough to be hit by one of them, good luck with all the medical bills and car repair/replacement.
many of you say illegals like they were from another planet...they were here long before many of your people even stepped foot here....
"They were illegals, and that crash just saved the state of Texas a LOT of welfare money. Would've lived longer in their own country." I'll second "What a stupid post." You've never rode in the back of a pickup? You've never gone to a bean field and worked all day in the hot sun? Never been far from home trying to make a buck or was having a rowdy good time a school event and followed the crowd to do something stupid? By the way, won't the State of Texas be picking up a lot of medical expenses for this carnage, if were going to assume this was a truck full of illegals were going to have to assume no medical insurance for those only injured and not dead? I would really love to tell you what I think of you but Newsvine has standards!!!!
Just me-Hispanics immigrated from Spain. Their ancestors persecuted the natives too.
nlh-they conquered south america took what they wanted from the people and land and then left, or the british killed them off- something to that effect. they didn't want to stay there, they didn't immigrate
Phuck. Now the price of lettuce is gonna go up.
Hahahaha.....OMG.....that is just wrong but fricken hilarious!!!
tails.
OH boy another media circus, Obama can just hop over to Texas and put on his Mexican circus act.
Just had to go there, didn't ya? Sit back & enjoy the kool-aid.
So, too bad, no compassion for these folks?
I would think that as a human being, not as an American or Republican or whatever, you could muster up some sympathy. Guess not.
people only care about one thing in this country....money
The driver is going to wish that he hadn't of survived when he fully understands all that "HE" is responsible for. Loading 23 tiny people in any vehicle short of a bus is only asking for something really bad to happen. A pick up truck, come on people, get real. A Ford F-250 is hardly any larger than a standard F-150 maybe safely capable of transporting 10 people and that is still with some of them illegally in the bed. Is it legal to haul humans in the bed of pick ups anymore? Not is most states on public roads but I am not sure about Texas. Something fishy going on that ended up costing way too many people their lives.
Growing up in the Upper Midwest, this truck with multiple people (in the vehicle and out of vehicle) is not uncommon. I loved riding in the back of the pickup, in the bed. I guess I don't know Texas (and never want to), but don't fricken go to say the people are illegal immigrants. I hate generalizations and stereotypes. The facts will come out.
MJ-
How much you wanna bet they weren't illegals?
There is a major difference (safety and common sense wise) between multiple and 23 people in a single pickup truck. And while I don't know about their official immigration status, I can without a doubt tell you they were illegal passengers. Illegal immigrants....probably, illegal passengers, 100%.
YELDARB27
I agree with you that the truck was at or beyond load capacity. Even if we use 150# each that puts total load at 3450... the MAX load depending on cab type is 3900. If we go with 175# each it's 4025 total load. That 3900 is a brand new 2012 vehicle with perfect tires on a perfect highway with perfect suspension.
Whether the occupants were illegal aliens or not the truck was illegally loaded. Six dead INSIDE? Six would be a snug fit if no one else were in there and exited before police arrived. Seventeen in the bed? Were they stacked like cordwood? Standing room only or standing on the bumper as well? Under ideal conditions the vehicle was an accident looking for a place to happen.
I'm thinking they might not all have been wearing seatbelts but that's what investigators are for.
The killing of 13 people in this situation is no more or less senseless than the killing of the 12 in the theater. The only difference will be this story will be swept under the rug in just a day or two. Don't try to explain the difference by saying one was murder and the other just an accident. When the driver and many of the passengers are this complacent about human life it is all murder to me.
I live in
Texas and it is against the law to transport anyone in the back of a pickup, years ago you could do it but they changed that some time ago, I suspect they were mexicans, I see it all the time a car stops at a bar or store and 12 or 15 people pile out of it all mexicans, thats the way they live also, one goes and rents a 2 bedroom apt or house and 20 or 30 people live there and usually end up tearing it up, I don't know if they were illegals or not if I were to bet on it I would say probably, not too bright to put that many people in one vehicle not designed for any where close to the weight.
@YELDARB27 - so car accidents are "murder" to you? I'm sorry sir, but you are an idiot.
Car accidents are sad and wasteful; . But they ARE accidents, NOT mass murder; unless you are claiming that peole who get in accidents actually are trying to kill people....
@YELDARB27... The driver did a dumb move but hardly a premeditated plot to cause these deaths. So of course it isn't as big of a news story and it won't get swept under the rug but there will be bigger front page stories and headlines more important and relevant over the days and weeks to come.
@MJ1987... Forums are where people are able to voice their opinions. I have said it before that you PC police are more annoying than the people who call the elephant in the room. People are dead and the origin, color, race, religion, gender or any other label you want to put on it doesn't change the fact that families and loved ones somewhere are hurting. Even if that somewhere is Mexico...
If you climb in a truck with 22 other people then you're dumber then the driver. If you let a minor into a truck with 22 others then you need to be tried and shot through the head or sent to an asylum so that way your crazy insane self cant in-danger anyone else. No American would climb in let alone allow their children to climb in to that truck. So my vote goes to Illegal Immigrants. And they were probably trying to escape border patrol and that's why they are "now involved".
@Jenn S-2267056 - If an individual deliberately loads a vehicle improperly and/or illegally and then people die as a result of an accident that occurs (specifically there is a seatbelt law in Texas) then the operator of the vehicle is guilty of negligent manslaughter (also known as 3rd degree murder) and could be charged with 2nd or even 1st degree murder if the deaths were the direct result of the commission of a crime. If (and I say if with tongue in cheek) the passengers of this vehicle turn out to be illegal aliens and also juveniles then it is very likely that the operator of the vehicle will find himself/herself on trial in Texas for Capital Murder which can carry a death sentence. Legally there is no such thing as an accident, there are collisions that may result in property damage, injury to persons, or death. Collisions can be criminal by their very nature. If many people die as the result of a collision then that can legally be construed as Mass Murder. I am sorry but those are the facts.
Thanks David, some people are so self-absorbed they only have time to insult others rather than listen to an educated view. Your explanation was in fine detail but I doubt any detractors will seek to understand it when it is always an easier path to seek to be seen or heard first.
Texas will get sued for building the hiway to close to those trees..
No, but Ford will be sued for not having seatbelts in the bed of thier pickup!
damn, I almost snorted a cracker out of my nose
If our government was really doing something about border security, these 11 people may well be alive today.
Or, they would have gotten shot crossing the boarder, which I'm sure would have been less painful.
Danielle1234-- Ya if the bullets are placed properly they would never know what hit them, ask any trained sharp shooter a brain stem shot and even a hostage taker will wilt to the ground without even being able to pull the trigger not even by reflex. Of course the other option is they get to were ever they were headed and get shot by some punk drug addict or even a home owner as they break in.
Too bad you're ingoring the fact President Obama is doing a better job at protecting our borders than President Bush (either of them) or President Reagan. Truth hurts. Why not hold Texas Gov to the same standards you do the feds? It's his state afterall. I guess personal responsibility only means "blame the feds" to the cons.
Little over a ton of weight in a 3/4 ton truck, not a great idea.
that's assuming that they only weighed about 43kg(95lbs) each. I can't believe nobody saw them
...How did they decide who sat where? Someone must have been really good at Tetris...
Texas law says someone can ride in the bed of a truck if it's your only mode of transportation, Dumb I know
Texas law says no such thing. It is illegal to be a driver or passenger in a motor vehicle without being in a seat with both passive primary and secondary restraint systems in place and on as prescribed by the federal laws applicable to the year of manufacture or to be a child passenger under the age of six in a passenger vehicle without being in an approved child safety seat/restraint as above. - Texas DPS state trooper
Sorry Jay but you are wrong, they changed that law quite a few years ago, you used to be able to do it but not anymore, of course you can still pile them in but if you get caught there is a hefty fine involved even if there is just one person in the back of a pickup, every ocupant must have a seat belt
(off topic here, but... Isn't it funny how insurance companies managed to get all the states to mandate seatbelts to save them money in payouts? If you AREN'T wearing your seatbelt, you are cited, which means your injuries are your own fault and now insurance doesn't have to pay.... land of the free, where you aren't quite as free as you think......)
And the reason you can't do it anymore, not that you should, is because ten years or so ago up near Lubbock a pickup with ten Mexicans in it pulled out in front of an 18 wheeler and killed them all. The law was changed right after that accident.
12 people killed in a truck accident, and no one is calling for a ban on pick-up trucks?
Wonder if it was an "assault" pickup.
Was it black?
Did it have "evil features", like threaded front bumper mounts, separate door handles, a high-capacity gas tank, and a detachable gas cap?
Look at the picture! It was a white pickup. They were messy cans. It was a racist hate wreck. obozo will be there getting another fifteen minutes of free mug time speechifying about how white pickups should not be so racist.
Yet another false conparison from conservatwits who can't tell the difference between an assault weapon and a vehicle.
The clown car (truck) wasn't funny this time.
The majority of tire failures are from old worn out tires, woops.
Phil, the majority of tire failures are NOT from old worn out tires.
The majority of tire failures are blow-outs caused by over-heating from under-inflation.
The absolute MINIMUM tire specification for this 3/4 ton pickup would have been a load range "E" (10-ply rated) tire, inflated to 80 psi cold in back. But in my experience, most people intentionally under-inflate the tires on their 3/4 ton pickups, because after they buy a 3/4 ton pickup, they get upset that it rides like...wait for it...a 3/4 ton pickup. So they under-inflate the tires to make it ride softer, which makes it easier to over-heat the tires, causing blow-outs.
To make matters worse, even if each of those 23 people only weighed 130 pounds, that's 3000 pounds, or 1-1/2 tons...in a 3/4 ton pickup. Over-loading ANY vehicle by TWICE it's maximum rated load is ASKING for trouble. And in this case, they got it.
good point, it also doesn't help when your carrying 23 people who easily weigh in 3,000 lbs. range.
See my post #9.4 - Mon Jul 23, 2012 6:54 AM EDT 150 to 175 is the average weight used for transport calculations.. 3450 to 4025 in a vehicle rated at less when new.
23 people that were found at scene... Guaranteed there were another dozen that fled the scene to avoid being taken by la Migra!
Or under inflated or over loaded tires. usually its heavy loads on under inflated tires that cause blow outs, that's why truckers check tires whenever they stop.
Yes, good point, but we don't actually know that this was a case of underinflated tires. The only times I've had flats were from old worn out tires that failed due to age and I'm sure overheating as an underlying factor. I opined about old tires because if someone is desperate enough to load this many people in one truck, I bet they let the maintenance go on their vehicle as well. There are many scenarios that contribute to tire failure and we just don't know which one it was without an investigation.
I have a 1 ton dually diesel, just because it says 1 ton, doesn't mean that. It has a pin box rating of about 3600 lb in the bed and the whole bed can carry 5000 lb according to the vehicle loading manual. The 3/4 ton of the early 2000's could carry more than 3/4 ton in the bed. Either way, this was grossly overloaded and the people were taking a huge risk to ride in such a packed vehicle.
Pretty foolish no matter how you slice it.
Who ever they are they didn't deserve to end up crushed and dying on the side of a highway. It is so sad people feel compelled to make choices that expose them to risks such as this. Even more so that lead them to involving children. I can't think of any good reason for little lives to be in a vehicle where they can't be safely secured. My heart goes out to everyone who died and are injured. I hope the familes of all involved get the support they need and help. All life has value, even those we may not care to have from another country.
windancersong-- I'm as cold as ice about close the border and deporting illegals, even shooting illegal border crossers if need be(drug smugglers) but your statement is TRUE all life does have worth. Thank you for keeping that in perspective.
Can we annex Texas to Mexico? And Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia?
Yeah, I wish the north had lost the Civil War. The Union would be a much better place today.
Texas is already providing a huge part of Mexico's GDP might as well take the whole enchilada and expand South Texas all the way to Guatemala.
I'd rather we annex Mexico then we'd have a reason to fix it, also think of all the cool vacation spots we could buy land at then, since Mexican law prohibits outsiders from owning ocean front property now.
Scott
Trying to fix Mexico would bankrupt us, there is just too much to fix. I was stationed at Hill AFB in Ogden, best 4 years of my life, it was like a 4 year vacation, skiing in the winter, rode my motorcycle all over the state in the summer, it was fantastic, Logan Canyon is one of the most scenic rides in the country, as is the area around Moab down to Monument Valley, Lake Powell is just awsome, Utah is a very nice state and I would advise anybody looking for a really scenic vacation to give it a try.
Definitely illegals. Not stereotyping, just using logic. Duh!
Nice knowing I share this forum with so many who smile and throw out cynical comments about children dying, because they might be the children of illegals. Keep it classy, white people.
You assume we're all white? Racist!
Yes, I do assume so, and you bet I am!
My money is on illegal foreign invaders.
I'll bet there were actually more of them, and the ones that were able to flee, did so.
I own an F250 long bed and can't see how they could get 23 people in it. As said above, someone was good at Tetris. You would have to stack them like cord wood in the bed.
my exact thoughts, we drive an f-3500 at work and i don't see that carrying 23 people, even if they all weighed 100 pounds which is an under estimate, it's no xurprise a tire blew out carrying 2,300 pounds
Actually, coyotes DO stack the immigrants like wood in the bed of the trucks. They also stack them, lying down, in the backs of SUVs (which generally have the back seats removed). In the pickup trucks, the coyote also likely places a tarp or painters' cloth over the people, to help shield them from view. The folks aren't seated in the truck--they'd be visible that way and the truck would be stopped by the highway patrol or local law enforcement. Despite the anti-Texas comments, no one in Texas drives around with twenty+ people in the bed of a truck, cruising at speed down a major highway.
Lara - no one legally in Texas does that, just the illegal ones.
Ford has blood on its hands with this incident. If they didn't manufacture these trucks, these people would still be alive. The gov't needs to take control of these trucks and ban them altogther!!!!
Yup. And the damned NPA (National Pickup Association) is just as guilty.
Why would anyone need a 3/4 ton pickup with a fully automatic transmission anyway. We should limit people to a 21-speed Huffy.
Stop the madness!
Maybe the people who actually got into the truck and deliberately put themselves and their children into a dangerous situation are the ones who are responsible....The surviving adults should be charged with child endangerment.
No, we need to blame the inanimate object. The pickup is evil. People are not responsible for the crappy life decisions they choose to make, lol.
There ought to be a federal pickup ban. Or at the least background checks, and a mandatory waiting period before you can take possesion of your new pickup. And no pickup box should be a high capacity box. Only one person at a time should fit.
It is legal to ride in the back of a pick-up in Arizona..But you must have a seat belt on if in the cab????
I see it every day and being Mexican I do not find it that odd. But not over loaded like that!!
¿en qué estabas pensando !!!
How many more people have to die before we see some sensible regulations regarding the use of automobiles? Thirteen people killed. Tragic.
How horrible. Prayers for the families and also for the rescuers.
So when is Mr. Obama making a visit?
Barack Hussein probably thinks the police acted stupidly.
LOL
I guess you mean President Obama.
to dame & vern: MORONS
Dame and Vern....you are examples of the dumbing down of society. I wonder how low it will go?
