AURORA, Colo. – He’s the tiny miracle after the tragedy of Aurora.
Hugo Jackson Medley was born at 7:11 a.m. local time on Tuesday, according to University of Colorado Hospital spokesman Dan Weaver. Both mother and child are doing well.
His mother, Katie Medley, escaped the Colorado movie theater attack uninjured, but her husband, Caleb, is in the same hospital in a medically-induced coma fighting for his life.
High school sweethearts
High school sweethearts, Katie and Caleb Medley started dating during their senior year in the small town of Florence, Colo., according to their close friend Michael West, who has become their family spokesman.
“You could just tell that out of everyone in the world, these two were meant for each other,” West wrote on a website dedicated to Caleb that he created to raise money to cover his friend’s medical bills. As of Tuesday afternoon, the website has had 2,600 donors who have given about $90,000.

Katie Medley, who was nine-months pregnant when she was at the movie theater where the Aurora shooting happened, delivered her son, Hugo, on Tuesday morning. Her husband, Caleb, right, is in critical condition in the hospital from gun shot wounds sustained during the attack.
In eighth grade, Caleb, now 23, decided he wanted to be a standup comedian. So after he and Katie, 21, got married they moved to Denver, where he could chase his dream.
In an Internet video titled “Caleb Saves the Internet: Saving the One Nighter,” he chronicles life on the road as a struggling comic.
He jokes about staying in a seedy motel room with a busted deadbolt and stains on the wall. But Caleb was making progress. Last Wednesday night, he performed stand up at the New Faces Contest at Comedy Works South in Denver, according to the Denver Post. He did well enough to advance to the next round of a comedy festival.
It was to be a big week for the couple. Not only was Caleb getting comedy gigs, but he was about to become a father. Katie, a veterinary student, was nine months pregnant and her doctor planned to induce labor on Monday, July 23.
One last date night
Katie and Caleb decided to treat themselves to one last night out before they needed a babysitter. Even though she was nine months pregnant, they were huge Batman fans and they were not going to miss opening night.
NBC's Kate Snow reports on the shooting suspects court appearance Monday, as well as the status of some of the shooting victims, including Caleb Medley.
"They had Batman apparel on. They waited for this movie for over a year,” said David Sanchez, Katie Medley’s father.
“They were having the normal opening night movie experience,” their friend Michael West wrote, recounting a conversation he had with Katie. “They stood anxiously in line, spent too much on popcorn and soda, suffered through the movie trailers and watched the beginning of the movie. That is when evil struck.”
“I thought it was a prank at first or someone playing along with the movie,” Katie told him, West writes. “Then he opened fire.”
Caleb was shot in the face. He was put in the back of a police cruiser and driven to University of Colorado hospital. The website says he has lost his right eye, suffered brain damage and is in a medically-induced coma.
Katie’s father, Sanchez, was at the Arapahoe County courthouse Monday to see the man he blames for ruining what was supposed to be a joyous time for the family. He said his daughter had asked him to come since she was in no state to attend herself.
“When it’s your own daughter and she escaped death by just mere seconds, I would say, it really makes you angry,” he told a group of reporters outside the courthouse where the shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes made a brief appearance Monday.
Asked about his son-in-law, Caleb, he said, “He's in critical but stable condition, so we're praying for him. I think the main concern is him right now, and the baby being born.”
Like many of the young 20-somethings at the movies that terrible night, the Medleys have no health insurance, according to their friend West.
“Caleb and his family have no insurance, and these hospital bills are going to be well into the hundreds if not thousands if not millions. Caleb and Katie will be struggling with these hospital bills for the rest of their lives,” West wrote on the website.

I'm trying to figure out how the term "miracle baby" got into this headline. Neither this mother nor unborn baby were shot and the baby was delivered at term or close to term. How is this birth more miraculous than any other miraculous birth? I think a true "miracle baby" will be if the single mom who is preganant, paralyzed from being shot in the throat and abdomen at the theater, and who also lost her 6-year old daughter, is able to carry her unborn child to term and that baby is healthy. Now, that will be a true miracle baby.
Are you an idiot? Just a troll?? Any one of these people could have lost their lives? Life is always a miracle and those who escaped this horror with their lives i am sure better understand this than you.
Really and you dont think being 9 months pregnant, sitting next to your husband who was shot in the head, not to mention the thousands of rounds flying every which way and the tear gas filling up the room, and mom and baby ecsaped unharmed. She could of very well of been shot or killed at that.

chle138, Jaimie Pringle & AllPeopleRights, I understand how you could think what I'm saying is that I don't appreciate that fact that the mother and baby were in a harrowing situation and I apologize for coming across that way as that was not my intention at all. Reading further in my original post I hope you will understand that is not what I'm saying - however, as we all know, voice inflection is lost in written word and emotions are running high so it's easy to misinterpret what I said, plus I'm sure I wasn't being very clear. So, please, let me try again: What I meant is that the media - not the family or victims in this situation (sorry, Be Accountable-1433376) - are trying to sensationalize this story MORE than what it is. And yes, you all are right, it IS a miracle the mother and baby survived while the father is in critical condition. But what I meant is that, from a purely medical standpoint, this was not a high-risk obstretrical emergency/pregnancy/birth - the labor and delivery themselves weren't any more a miracle than the miracle of birth that happens every day. And I say that because the mother in this story was not fighting for her life from gunshot wounds while trying to carry this baby to term and the baby also was not physically injured prior to being born. (Yes, emotionally, I'm sure the mother is injured, but she wasn't physically injured.) That is what I am talking about when I said this isn't a "miracle baby," per se. However, there was a pregnant woman who was physically injured in this attack (another story on msn yesterday, not this one) who sustained gunshot wounds to her throat and abdomen and is now paralyzed. Her 6-year old daughter was also killed. Now if THAT woman carries her baby to term and both survive while Momma is fighting for her life and battling paralysis, that baby will truly be a "miracle baby."
The point I was trying to make, was that there is a difference between a pregnant woman who escaped the theater with no physical injuries to her and her unborn child - and another pregnant woman who was paralyzed and sustained a gunshot wound to her abdomen. That's what I was pointing out. It appeared to me the media was using sensationalism to sell this story when this mother and unborn child were not physically injured. The other pregnant woman was...and it IS a miracle she and her unborn are both still alive. Let's hope her child also makes it to full term.
I hope this helps clarify what I meant a little better and I apologize for coming across as if I didn't think this was a harrowing ordeal. It was. I just also think the headlines have been sensationalized by the media due to emotions running high.
People really amaze me. Turning a tragedyinto they should of not gotten pregnant with no insurance. How do any of you know if it was even planned? And they should not of been at the movies buying popcorn and soda if they didn't have insurance. This is just a shot in the dark, but i do believe a movie ticket and snacks is a hell of a lot cheaper that 200+ a month for health insurance, and that's just for and individual. I definitely think this is a miracle baby. She was sitting next to her husband whom was shot in the head, with gun fire and tear gas everywhere, and she survived. Everyone that survived, even the unborn is a MIRACLE! MoMaid you are one STUPID SOB! You lack compassion and morals! Katie and Caleb, you are in my prayers as well as millions of others out there.

I agree 100%. I watched as the "hero" firefighters let the Waldo Canyon fire get out of control and kill 2 people. Everyone is a hero now. Even the 911 operator??? Really? Everything is a miracle too.

This man is 'fighting' for his life... through no fault of his own. He shouldn't have to declare bankruptcy or be in debt for the rest of his life. Not for this. It's NOT like he went skateboarding or biking without a helmet knowing the risks and ignoring them...then fell on his head. He was injured at the hands of another person, while watching a movie...in a cinema. Whether he has insurance or not is totally irrelevant. Millions of Americans cannot afford healthcare. That cost factor is a big part of the problem. It should not be as expensive as it is given the huge percentage of taxes most households pay. That needs to be addressed first. this "I've got mine, you get yours" attitude is part of the problem with the country right now. It's selfish and destructive.
I hope this guys pulls through to enjoy a full life with his kid.

This is so sad all of these lives being lost and the ones who survived will certainly be haunted by what has happened. I am very disturbed by the picture of the suspect always attached to one of these victims stories. And as far as gun control, I hope that common sense plays a roll because law abiding citizens and people who are not mentally ill want to keep their rights to bare arms.

Dawn until the minute the sooter took his first victim he was the picture perfect law abidng citizen. No previous record, no mental health issues, no brushes with the law. He would have passed every background check with flying colors, he did pass every background check. So are you saying that this is just something we should live with, what if it was your child in that theater or the shooter in your local theater? Would you still be okay with the shooter legally obtaining a gun. Would you still feel the same way if your child was gunned down in cold blood? Ronald Reagan changed his stance on guns after he had been shot.

my husband was in a horrific car crash 5 yrs ago he was in a medically induced coma a month intesive care a month and hospital total of 2 months he had about 20 surgeries his medical bills were 900,000.... I'm sorry but 90,000 isnt going to cover much... she needs to contact victim services and others services near there to pay for the bills not raise money for the bills the money should go for his care after he's home because its going to cost them A LOT to get him back on his feet again... trust me I know.
The shooter should pay for this man's medical bills. It will be so unfair if this new family has to spend the rest of their lives paying for a lunatics murderous act.
His school loan won't be able to cover the costs. Most of the loan went to paying for his arsenal of guns, ammunitions, and chemical bombs. The parents have an attorney to try to keep them safe.

VERY SIMPLY: A school loan should be used for exactly that. There are places that easily can monitor where that money goes..... proof of costs of books, receipts, a monitored person that writes out the checks to the actual school oriented costs. With all the discussion on loans that are unpaid, the USA could easily monitor where that money is spent if any effort were made... one day it will be.
I think that is an excellent idea! I hope they follow through with it. I wouldn't be surprised if many people getting school loans are not using the money for school and probably don't intend to pay it back.

To anyone who talks negative because "they chose to get pregnant without insurance"....the article certainly didn't tell you if they had money put away for this baby, or the movie tickets or the popcorn!!! They most likely planned ahead for the baby....and they could have planned ahead and had savings in case of an emergency. This is much more than an emergency. They could not have possibly planned to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars because some idiot thought it would be fun to shoot up a theatre full of people and at the same time hope he could blow up a few more when they entered his apartment. Stop judging people and focus on the story!!
Katie, Congrats on your litttle bundle of joy and I am pleased to see you are doing well. Caleb, I don't pray often but I am praying for you sir. Pull through and enjoy being a father, it is the best job in the world.

The Movie Theatre carries insurance in case of law suits or accidents. This and assistance from various agencies will get this young man back on his feet at very little or no cost. Theres a huge chance for a possible settlement by the Movie Theatres insurance company on the horizon. Victims of violent crimes like this are often very well taken care of. As for the mother and the new baby- that's a different story. I wish you well and hope at the end of the day you all find PEACE.
