A woman who said she was sexually assaulted while on a two-month row around Lake Michigan to raise cancer awareness says she remains frightened but plans to resume her trip Wednesday.
Jenn Gibbons is trying to become the first person to solo-row the entire 1,500-mile perimeter of Lake Michigan in an effort to show the role exercise plays in the fight against breast cancer. She set out on her two-month mission from Chicago on June 15, NBCChicago.com reported.
About five weeks into her journey, she said, she awoke in the early morning hours on Sunday to the sound of someone boarding the boat, which she had docked for the night near a lighthouse on a stretch of a remote shoreline of Lake Michigan. Gibbons told police she rushed to lock the cabin door, but the stranger forced his way inside and sexually assaulted her.

“I was out in the middle of nowhere,” Gibbons told the Chicago Sun-Times. “It was terrifying. And he told me he knew where to find me.”
Police believe Gibbons’ attacker traveled a significant distance to find her, they said in a statement, perhaps following her on the Internet as she documented her mission through her Facebook page and personal blog.
Gibbons said she punched the man in the chest and ran. She tried to lock herself in a wooden outhouse, but her attacker forced his way inside. She said she fought him off until he fled in a yellow Jeep Wrangler.
Gibbons said she ran to the boat, locked herself in the cabin and called 911, police said.

Michigan State Police
This sketch shows the suspect wanted in connection with the reported sexual assault of Jenn Gibbons on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
Police released a sketch of the man Tuesday and continued their investigation. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, approximately 5 feet 8 to 6 feet tall, with a fair amount of facial stubble hair, but not a full beard or mustache. The man has light eyes, an average to athletic build and shorter well-kept hair. He was wearing a grayish green T-shirt, jean shorts and tennis shoes.
“I know that I had a choice in telling people about the details of my attack, particularly that it was a sexual assault,” Gibbons posted in a note to her Facebook page. “To go through this at all, let alone publicly, is extremely difficult. I chose to talk about it in the hope that someone might be able to provide more information about the person who did this to me.”

“Regarding the trip, one thing hasn’t changed: I’ve still got this,” Gibbons wrote. “But the trip plan will change in a few ways to ensure my safety. Most importantly, I will no longer be alone.”
Gibbons is a customer service agent for the deal-of-the-day website Groupon and the head coach for the Recovery on Water charity, a rowing team composed of breast cancer survivors.
Gibbons said she hoped her mission circumnavigating Lake Michigan would raise $150,000 for her charity. She has already raised $80,000, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

If they catch the low life, I hope they hang him by his toes over a shark tank.
Better yet, hang him by his family jewels.
I read an account about a woman who kayaked the perimeter of Lake Superior just to see if it could be done. She did it and it was an incredibly perilous journey. Doing this for breast cancer awareness is a very selfless and giving thing to do. Too bad the first national news about it is because she was assaulted. I wish her every luck and I hope the cops catch him and put him in a cell with a great big angry guy named Bruiser.
they should hang him by something else
A 9mm tucked away somewhere near you and you wouldn't have had to run and try to lock the door. Plus, as an added bonus, the world is less 1 piece of sh!t !!!
First things first when a women is assaulted by a man you either kick him in the nuts will all you have or kick him in the back of knee area to put him on the ground where you can snap his neck or either run away.
She needs to first learn how to kick ass before she went on this trip.
SportsLover22 - I like the idea of the shark tank but forget the hanging by his toes - just throw the sumbitch in and be done with him.
Way to blame the vicitm Michael.
I hope they catch this creep!
I'm thinking more like hang him by the nubby duck, give him a dull knife and the option to await the sharks that are being released in a timely fashion to arrive or saw off the offending member.
Way to go girls. Twitter everything, tell the perverts that you are alone and exactly where you are, then hang a bulls eye around your neck. Face book, internet and twitter are not your friends.
I know this woman and trust me, she can kick ass.
IWonder, tweeting and blogging about one's journey is NOT an invite for sexual assault. This is in no way her fault. Thanks for blaming the victim. I'm sure all of the victims of the Aurora shooting were asking for it too . . . I mean they were all just sitting in a theater, unarmed.
Yes, it will a great day when the lowlife scum is caught -- but the search would have been ended immediately had she been able to put him down on the spot. Damned hard to drive a car, let alone run, when you have a broken knee and ruptured 'nads.
I had never heard of this chick until now, but how sick do you have to be to assault a selfless young girl trying to raise money for cancer? This sick pos needs to be tortured and killed, end of story. In case anyone doesn't like that, I can tell you that no comments to the contrary are going to change my mind.
There are even sick f*cks who read these boards, and they need to know that because of them and their actions is why no one wants to help anyone anymore. Alas, they don't care and are actively seeking their next victim. Please learn from this ladies, and arm yourselves. These cowards are afraid of nothing except that their victim might be packing heat. That's it. Make their nightmare come true.
Spellchecker quit holding back tell us what you really think.........LOL.
Apparently not well enough, because the scum got away. Her first, and most important mistake that night was choosing to anchor in that REMOTE AND ISOLATED location. Her second mistake was thinking that all she had to do was call 911 and she would automatically be safe from harm. She is damn lucky that there was only ONE attacker.
Lady, for crying out loud, carry a gun!
No, don't kill the sick bastards who do these things. Let 'em live -- and let 'em regret and curse the very day they were born.
"Is this a bottle in front of me?" "No, Mr. Rapist, it is your nether member, in lieu of your frontal lobotomy!"
spockgrrl, the point is that she has been telling the entire world exactly where she is, exactly where she is heading next, and exactly where to find her. The only people who need to know exactly where to find her are those who would need to go to her rescue should anything happen to her -- such as getting raped, killed or simply abducted.
She does share at least some of the blame in this, simply because SHE CHOSE TO BROADCAST THE FACT THAT SHE WAS ALONE, AS WELL AS HER LOCATION, TO THE ENTIRE WORLD.
Well spockgrrl, I am not saying that you don't have the right to set yourself up for tragedy, I am saying that it's stupid to do so. Perverts don't care about right and wrong. You just go right ahead with your self righteousness and we may be soon reading about you.
Agnon, this is where we fundmentally disagree. I don't believe that the victim of any crime is ever even partially responsible for what is committed against them. Did she make a mistake by disclosing so much information? Absolutely. But the perpatrator's actions were 100% his choice, and his responsibility.
IWonder, I was sexually assualted as a child - I carry pepper spray and never disclose my location on the internet. That being said, the fact that this particular woman made a mistake and was too trusting does not mean she is to blame for what happened to her. But thank you for the unwarranted personal attack.
spockgrrl, if I choose to turn down a job and end up not being able to pay the rent, it is my fault. Likewise if you CHOOSE to walk down a dark alley, KNOWING that doing so could even possibly end with you being raped -- then YOU share in the blame should you be raped in that dark alley.
Yes, even YOUR innocent actions really do have consequences, and YOUR mistakes really do make you at least partially to blame for what befalls you.
I do believe that the person who committed the crime is responsible for the crime itself as I believe that someone who makes bad decisions is responsible for their own decisions and the repercussions of those decisions.
I hear you, Agnon, and I fully agree with the majority of what you have said - she displayed poor decision making, but I disagree that the victim should be held morally responsible for being assaulted and that an innocent mistake of the victim's should be the focus of discussion here. That's all I mean.
I understand that all actions have consequences, but I also understand that if a similar incident happened to a man, it's very likely that his social media habits would not be discussed.
I don't think she's responsible for what happened, but I do think she exercised extremely poor judgement in broadcasting that she was alone and her location. However, the shame is on the attacker, and always is. Those who think she shares the blame, let me ask you this. Did YOU go out after her to attack her? What if she had posted naked pics of herself along with her location, would you then go after her? Of course not - because you are presumably honorable and decent people. Someone else's actions and deficits are not the responsibility of the victim and frankly I'm tired of people expecting women to feel ashamed for someone else's bad acts.
With that being said, I keep asking WHY do people not understand that the internet is not a safe forum to post every detail? I can understand when the internet first came out, people may not have understood how it worked and how there was no privacy, but I can't see why people don't get it yet. There have been so many instances from the benign to the serious that have occurred from people posting too much information I am amazed that so many out there still don't stop to think before they disclose certain information!
Well said, MonkeyMo.
And how many men are the targets of rapists, eh? Muggers look for ANY person they think will not be able or willing to fight back -- but rapists look for vulnerable WOMEN. The ONLY common factors are that 1) the rapist and the mugger are opportunists who look for the easiest target possible and 2) they are both lowlife scum.
She IS at least partially to blame simply because SHE chose to tell everyone exactly where she could be found. If it were a man telling the whole world that he was carrying $10 Million, along with his actual route and timetable, that man would be AT LEAST partially to blame when someone shows up and steals that $10 Million.
When you set yourself up to be a victim by making it as easy as possible for someone to do what they want to you (i.e., broadcasting your location and the fact that you are alone), then YOU share in the blame for any crime committed against you.
Well spockgrrl, I agree with some of what you say. Doesn't matter. Although the fault lies 100% with the criminal, what good does it do you to be faultless and raped or dead? All the lofty ideas and air castles will never change reality. Humans are human and will remain that way until we become extinct.
If you desire to be proactive, get yourself a pistol and learn how to use it. I bought one, and when she turned 16, I taught my daughter how to use it and gave it to her. No guarantee that it will do any good but at least it might give her a fighting chance. So far so good, she is now thirty.
The part about it being a man, reality girl, it was not a man and in any event a woman is not a man. We all make stupid mistakes, some of them have worse repercussions when you are a woman, that is reality.
MonkeyMo, If you walk down the street with a wad of cash in your pocket and a sign advertising that you have that wad of cash in your pocket, are you actually 100% innocent when someone attacks you and tries to take that wad of cash that you told the entire world that you were carrying? No, you would be laughed at for even trying to place all of the blame on the person who tried to steal the money, and rightly so -- because you will have set yourself up to BE a victim.
She set herself up to BE a victim when she advertised to the entire world that she was alone and where she would be that night. She shares the blame for what happened.
In case you have any more doubts, I have been the victim in a couple of rear-end accidents while stopping for/waiting at a red light. Each time I have shared in the blame -- simply because I "did not move out of the way". It's the way the world works, bubba.
spockgrrl, this isn't comparable to the shootings in Aurora. When you go on a solo rowing trip and broadcast your whereabouts, you're assuming a lot more risk than if you were going to a movie theater or to the supermarket. This woman added to the risk by leaving the cabin door unlocked. Yes, criminals are responsible for their behavior, but that doesn't make their intended victims invulnerable. A victim is a victim, blameless or not. You have to use common sense.
I love how some guys...who've NEVER been put in a situation like this say.... she should have done this or that...ya know sometimes you CAN'T kick a guy in the nuts. The way a predator stocks his victims is to know HOW to approach them so that they don't have the opportunity to fight back. You guys just look like moronic jackasses when you post such stupid things.
There are other parts of his anatomy by which he could be suspended.
...just a thought.
I hope they catch this POS and lock him in a cage with Bubba.
I propose an Amendment to the Constitution which allows police to capture people like this guy, cut off his balls and shove them up his a$$. All in favor?
People need to stop assuming that the morale of other people will make them impervious to harm, yes it would be nice if we lived in a world where that were true, but the reality of it is we do not, the world is unfortunately full of predators and if you stand doe-eyed in the middle of a field I find it kind of hard to commiserate
All you need is someone to shadow you to make sure you are safe, let him or her carry the gun while she focuses on accomplishing her goal.
@Gtouch
Lol. I laughed at the seriousness of my comment after you pointed it out. What happened to Spellchecker's sense of humor, we may not know. I recently had dental surgery, so I think it's the pain meds. I will return to normal very soon, hopefully. Of course, the other posters will then go back to collapsing everything I say, but such is the vine.
Wow, I have a lot to respond to. Just to clarify my position - I'm not necessarily disagreeing with those pointing out the mistake the victim made - she did make a mistake, and it is vitally important to learn from this mistake. The Facebook app on smartphones posts your location on any status update without asking, the whole point of apps like Foursquare are to broadcast one's location. The commonplace nature of telling the world where one is at any given time gives people a false sense of security when they seek to join in.
What bothers me is that the majority of the comments I have read criticize the victim rather than the attacker - it is fine to point out the mistake, but the level of sarcasm and malice towards her for doing something many people do every single day (update the world every five seconds on their location, state of mind, and bowel movements) was incredibly disturbing to me. Yes, Henry FitzEmpress, I found the comments absurd, and I responded with an absurdity. The situations are very different, but are the same in the fact that the attacker created the tragedy, though the victim(s) were vulnerable.
IWonder, I commend you for teaching your daughter to protect herself. I don't think I have lofty thinking for asking the focus of discussion to be placed on the rapist, not the woman raising money for breast cancer research, but I am glad to have people who disagree - variety is the spice of life, after all.
I suppose all I am seeking is a little respect for the victim and in the language used to talk about her. The truth is, even if she were armed, had a deadbolt on her door, and was discrete on the internet, this still could have happened. Rapists will always find a way to do what they do. And that's what the world is. So let's focus on stopping them instead of adding to the shame, guilt, and pain I'm sure this woman is feeling without input from the peanut gallery.
What an incredibly brave woman, with such a loving heart. I pray people will be generous in helping her reach her goal in supporting breast cancer. I lost my mother to it after an eleven year battle. This woman is doing something remarkable in speaking out about the attack. No doubt other victims will draw strength from her example.
I can't believe sombody could do something like that. What a dirt bag! I hope they find him and hang him by his nuts!!
Hanging by the toes is a good idea, but I was thinking by something more mid-way between waist and knees. She is a brave woman and has a boatload of courage. God bless her in her endeavor and keep her safe.
That is by far the lamest story I ever heard. Most important, who heard of her until this incident? Are the police really that gullible? Last time I checked I would never just stay in the middle of no where, even during the day. What a joke.
You're an idiot.
Although I agree with the message of your post, I wish you had worded it a little more nicely.
from your comment it sounds to me like the police should be asking where you were that night.
Is the yellow jeep in your driveway or parking space?
Unless it was your mother, sister, daughter, niece, etc., right Khannez?
Khannez -- your comment was uncalled for. I think most people admire this lady. Who do you think would have taken this trip with her? She's trying to help a wonderful charity. What kind of nut cases are out there now? The guy that assaulted her is the sorriest of the sorry.
You must live in the city. Lots of people stay in the 'middle of nowhere' everyday. This woman is brave.
I wonder if she has thought of getting a rescue/pound pup?
I think shes faking it for publicity. I am a female, and i sure as hell wouldnt be traveling night and day alone telling the whole world, which clearly is full of weirdos and psychos where I am at all times. She probably still hasnt learned her lsson and will still disclose all of her locations. If anything she should post things at a 2 - 3 day delay of where she actually is not oh hey WORLD i am all alone at a dark in the middle of nowhere light tower and here is where you can find me, once again, all alone. wtf?
Khannez;
I just returned a couple days ago from a week-long camping trip "in the middle of nowhere". I had my cell phone, useless, unless I climbed up the ridge to where I could get any reception at all; a large sheath knife and a collapsible steel baton, useful only against people/animals that happen to be within arm's reach; and a 9mm handgun, useful against all people, dogs and bears at ANY distance within 80 yards -- especially when they are within ten feet distance. That's right, there are bears in the area I was camping in, so I made sure I was prepared for them, as well as for any people who may have decided to attack me.
YOU may not wish to ever be "in the middle of nowhere", but plenty of people do it every day without any problem at all. The difference between you and all those people is that THEY choose to prepare themselves as much as possible for what they might be confronted with.
I would actually choose to be "in the middle of nowhere" any day rather than spend even five minutes in any city. Much more likely to be killed while in a city, simply because there are more lowlife scum in a city.
People need to stop assuming that the morale of other people will make them impervious to harm, yes it would be nice if we lived in a world where that were true, but the reality of it is we do not, the world is unfortunately full of predators and if you stand doe-eyed in the middle of a field I find it kind of hard to commiserate.
Having said that, I agree with Annonymous12. How much will such a tragedy increase the $$ amount she is raising and/or fame of her efforts for this cause?
Looks like Eminem......
LOL! I was just going to post the same thing!
LMAO it does!
What low life-I hope he is caught.
Thank you for not appending "I hope they hang him upside-down by his scrotum above a lake of boiling acid." I swear, the bloodlust of some of these internet commenters is downright shocking.
I hope the perpetrator is caught. And sent to prison. In accordance with the laws of the land and the sensibilities of a civilized society.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. You are a very brave woman. A woman alone is a target in some places so I hope you will consider a firearm of some type.
God bless you as you deal with cancer and the remainder of your trip. A bad thing happened to you but it does not have to define you.
She's not reading your post you know.
How you do know, EG?
Actually, you never know. I've actually seen a few post on here where the person in the story DID respond. EG-715158, way to be a downer for no reason. Go do something productive.
So, what? At least the thought is out there. Go play in your sandbox now.
Is it just me or does the guy look strikingly like Eminem?!!!
Maybe the hair, but Eminem has round droopy eyes and pouty lips. This guy has squinty eyes and thin straight lips.
Advice to all young women, take the time to get a conceal and carry license and then always have it ready to go, at any given minute. It will give you some peace of mind and let you have some freedom to go where you want. Guys can go fishing and be out in the wilderness, without the fear of being attacked. Women do not have the same freedom and should empower themselves. If not a gun, then mace and a pocket knife and maybe a self defense class. It's sick to have to think like that, but as long as there are creeps like rapists and murderers, what choice do you have.
Sounds like she fought him off and wasn't assaulted. Hopefully he got the worst of it.
Sounds to me like she WAS assaulted and fought him off. Hopefully you some day get a clue.
for women who does things on their own
majority of men are pigs not all but you know face it we are human
which means we are idiots who do idiot things
#1 fix = mace and yes im talking a bat with a large steel ball on the end to connect with the 2 balls on the perp, no need to feel bad about racking those balls its what they deserve
#2 fix = pepper spray hell empty the dam bottle on the idiot, it takes alot for idiots to pull out of their idiocies
#3 fix = if you feel like #1 and #2 wont work
pack a pistol just make sure you shoot to kill or the idiot may take your gun with your privates
dont feel bad if you kill the idiot, they asked for it
so you serve a couple of years no one does life anymore with united states injustice system
think of the killing as a future deturent
no way possible the idiot who thinks they can do what they want to hurt others will never do it again to other innocent girls who care for enjoyment of life
not fear of life for the rest of their lives
any assualt on innocent peeps from idiots dictates to me the idiot does not belong on this planet
oh you can say killing is to extreme untill it happens to you, then your family then your friends
do you really think it ends with these idiots when they go to jail? lol
stop fooling yourself they did it once they will do it again. this is earth not heaven
Keith, you should have added Raid Wasp and Hornet spray. It's perfectly legal, shoots a stream over 20 feet, won't affect the user like a fine (pepper) spray will, and it burns and temporarily blinds the perp, giving the victim time to escape or stomp the perps nuts into the mud. It's also great on wasps and hornets. Oh, and there's not all that paperwork to deal with in the legal system.
Now - - this young woman is an example of a true celebrity. Not like all the other crap that is out there.
---
Any female who is alone on a trek and doesn't have a loaded gun with her; is a fool. When he broke into her locked cabin, she should have been waiting for him with the gun cocked and ready to shoot him dead. Now she's the victim, instead of him. Get real Ms. Gibbons; there's crazy nuts out there and you are in charge of defending yourself....the police are the first ones to tell you that.
Yep, blame the victim Marcia. After all, the bitch deserved it right?
While I think Marcia could have been a little more gentle so she didn't come of as uncaring, she didn't blame Ms. Gibbons at all. She merely called the choice to be alone on a remote stretch---and posting it for the world to know---was stupid. I'd be inclined to agree. Even posting a photo on your facebook will tell anyone who can view it exactly where you are on the planet...but few people know photos hide geo tags in the photo itself.
I don't think she was blaming the victim. She is sending a great message to all women that they should be prepared and not look at the world through rose colored glasses! She said nothing about deserve.
And she left out the part about not broadcasting to everyone where you are and that you are alone. While she is to be commended for what she is doing, she should be smacked between the eyes for not being more careful about it.
get a gun -- or at least someone donate a tazer and some good pepper spray.
Pepper spray is great if your target happens to be downwind. If not, you can both sit there and blindly slap at each other. Not only that, but there are actually creeps out there that like the stuff. No thanks, I;ll stick to my .40+14
Gee, how about rowing for ALL cancers? All I see are pink ribbons at every turn, particularly during October; I think folks are plenty aware. People are dying of all kinds of cancers, but you don't see any awareness events involving rowing, running, walking, etc, going on for those.
other cancers causes address this. Maybe she is focused on breast cancer as its the leading cause of cancer death among women.
Way to keep your eye on the ball.
You're complaining about what type cancer she is supporting? Are you kidding me? Take up your own cause if you don't think her's is worth enough for you. What a douche.
October is breast cancer awareness month for starters...and secondly, I see plenty of other causes supporting not only different cancers but other harmful conditions. If you do not, get your head out of your rear-end and look around. Better yet, start a cause of your own rather than complain about someone else who is making a difference.
Maybe she had someone close to her die or be diagnosed with breast cancer and thats her passion.
Why does the media, and in this case even the victim, insist on using the words "person" or even "man"?
He is not a person, or a man...not even an animal.
He is vermin.
Let's start using the proper terminology.
I second that...
The lowlife scum who do these things are not even vermin -- because even vermin have been known to be beneficial. Example: Gophers and moles are "vermin", yet they serve to aerate the soil. Another example: Coyotes are "vermin", yet they serve to keep dead animals from simply rotting in the open.
These lowlife scum are below the level of vermin.
I know it is not fair at all that a woman has to worry about her safety when she does things that men get to do all the time without worrying about their safety. However, that is the nature of this world whether we like it or not. And it is only going to get worse. So, for safety's sake, women need to be prepared for the worst. Travel with a companion, have a gun, etc. It is a sad world we live in.
The most cowardly of men fight women and children...
To bad she didnt have the foresight/planning/preparedness to better able to deal with this situation. Oh thats right..Guns are outlawed in Chicago arent they.. so much for legislating Morality.
Well good thing it didnt turn out any worse.
Maggie, I hear what you are saying! Problem is that dirtbags like this don't have enough there to get a string around, much less a rope! It will have to be a toe!!
Gun control laws help rapists. Each rapist knows his intended victim will be helpless.
That has to be the stupidest thing I have read all day...
It is actually one of the most intelligent things I have read today. Rapists, muggers and thugs ALWAYS go for the most vulnerable people possible -- and when they KNOW their intended victim is unarmed, that just makes it easier for them.
Remember, the police are just a phone call away! Too bad it takes an average of five minutes -- in a city, that is -- for them to just get to where you were last known to be..........
Was going to add that it takes more than five minutes, minimum, for the cops to just show up in rural areas. When seconds count -- the cops are always only minutes away.
This makes me SICK !!
This woman should be packing a gun for protection. She is ALONE, she needs protection!
There are some SORRY BAS TARDS out there ..I feel such pain for that Poor lady, but please do not abandon your mission as it would just give him more perverse pleasure. Be brave Girl and tell the World what happenned to you and maybe he will be brough to justice. Our prayers are with you.
In THE MOST corrupt city in the country....they have the STRICTEST gun laws!
This is WRONG !!
Not true. Washington, D.C. actually allows private citizens the right to have a loaded gun now.
