Subscribe to RSSIn a city with one of the largest gay communities, the Vatican on Friday named San Francisco's newest archbishop: a man who is a strong opponent of same-sex marriage.
The central governing body of the Roman Catholic Church picked Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, who is currently the bishop in the Diocese of Oakland, Calif. Cordileone, who will soon govern more than 432,000 Catholics in San Francisco under his new title, has publicly backed bans for same-sex marriage.
Cordileone, 56, supported California's controversial Proposition 8, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. During the state's November 2008 election, Proposition 8 barely passed with a 52 percent vote and contradicted the California Supreme Court's ruling that had legalized same-sex marriage just five months before.
When interviewed by the Catholic Radio Network around that time, Cordileone characterized same-sex marriage as a plot by "the evil one" to destroy morality in the modern world, according to the Chronicle.
Friday's appointment comes after the resignation of San Francisco's current Archdiocese, 76-year-old George H. Niederauer, who held the position since late 2005.
"I look forward to assuming my new pastoral responsibilities with and for the priests and people of the Archdiocese of San Francisco," Cordileone said in a press conference statement.
"This isn't a marriage made in heaven," Tom Ammiano, a gay state assemblyman who represents San Francisco, told the Chronicle. Ammiano did say he's willing to discuss gay marriage with Cordileone.
In February, a federal appeals court found Prop 8 unconstitutional, but the U.S. Supreme Court will probably have the final say in its constitutionality.

It's extremely sad when a man that supervises a group of men that regularly molest little boys is pronouncing he's against same sex relationships. What does he think they're doing when they have sex with little boys? This is obviously hypocrisy being exercised to a degree that is beyond belief.
What happened to the teachings of Christ in the Bible? Apparently the Catholics don't even pretend to love other humans. They just take the stand that they are in control of all human beings because they're Catholics. They will decide what's right or wrong. Somehow they seem to overlook their own felonious behavior and judge others instead of themselves.
The Archbishop would be better off keeping his mouth shut until he can stop the child molesters in his own church. Those same sex child molesters.
Does this man not understand that little boys are the same sex as the priests he is supposed to be guiding and preventing them from destroying these innocent little boys lives?

Sorry folks. According to the United States Department of Justice (go to their website and look up the Sexual Crimes Statistics) -- convicted pedophiles/child molesters are 95.6% MALES in Adult Heterosexual Relationships.
Pedophilia and sexual orientation are two entirely different factors. If you are trying to equate the two, then you are proof of your own lack of intelligence.

So in the same manner that Jesus used scripture to answer about the resurrection, by pointing to the implications of scripture, so too Christians point to Jesus' answer on male and female and marriage in reference to homosexuality.
So yes, Jesus did (and does) say something on the topic. The words of Jesus, the Old Testament, as well as His creation are all in agreement (and if you believe who He says He is, He is the author of all three).
Homosexuality is sin, it could be nothing less, as it needs corruption in order to exist. It is an aspect of the corruption of the world and so is not from the Father (1 John 2:15,16).
I have to laugh. Did MSNBC think that the Archbishop is against same sex marriage is big headlines. It would be if he supported it.

The only problem with this current administration was it far too quickly lost track of the economy and got pulled in by the hard left on the health care issues. Obama should have taken a page from the Clinton playbook, refocused on incentive packages, fired all the firebrand liberals from cabinet levels, and reached across the aisle like he did. Sadly it was the moderate Democrats in borderline districts who got the boot last fall.
The "firebrand Liberal" segment has the investors so skittish that we will probably will have a double-dip recession, if not a triple dip one. If Voltaire were live today, he would say Pelosi was neither compassionate, nor liberal, and not a democrat.

I do not see how the Vatican would appoint a legate who condones same sex marriage when they opposed it in their canon law. Opposing Gay Marriage does not necessarily mean you oppose Gays in general. I am not warm to the idea, but I would not discriminate against a Gay person either.
The one nagging question I have is, in a state where Gay marriage is legal, does that mean a Church is obliged to marry them? I hope not as it is against the first amendment to boss faiths around - any faith - and there are other reason Churches, Synagogues, and Mosques bar certain marriages - and that is their business, not the states.
There are Churches who accept same sex marriage and those who don't. Let's leave all of them alone, please. We are America, not the Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik thank you very much :)

@aquarius_1958: Scotland is proceeding with a bill to allow same sex marriages by 2015. Currently, civil partnerships are OK. In France, gays will be able to marry AND adopt children, as of 2013. Lastly, In New Zealand a bill to legalize gay marriage has been officially put on the parliament's agenda, just not sure as of this point in time when it will be heard. However, NZ's Prime Minister has stated he has "...no problem with gay marriage....". So while bills may not have yet passed, they are wending their way and my guess is they will pass in the near future. If you are desperate to hear lies, tune in to Rush's radio show, or the other windbag, Bill O'Reilly.
I am surprised the Mayor of SF is letting him remain in the city. The pattern seems to be today that if you disagree with the homosexuals you are banned from Sf, Chicago, etc. I remember when we had a first amendment in this country. I guess that really dates me.

NZ move to legalise same-sex marriage

A BILL to legalise gay marriage in New Zealand sponsored by a Labour MP has been officially put on Parliament's agenda, although it is not clear when it will have its first reading.
MPs will be given a conscience vote. Both Labour MP Louisa Wall and Green MP Kevin Hague had proposed bills on gay marriage, and in a joint statement last month said opinion polls showed the public supported a law change: ''It's time to extend the state's recognition of marriage to any couple who love each other.''
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says he does not have a problem with gay marriage, but it is not a priority.
The move came as Scotland's Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said the Scottish government would introduce legislation to allow same-sex couples to marry. Ms Sturgeon said the governing Scottish National Party would bring forward a bill for the first same-sex marriages to take place by 2015.

Many religious leaders hit out at the decision, although the Holyrood administration insisted that protection would be included in the new law to ensure churches, and individuals within them, would not have to conduct same-sex marriages if they did not agree with them.
A spokesman for the Catholic Church in Scotland said: ''The Scottish government is embarking on a dangerous social experiment on a massive scale.''
The decision, after almost 80,000 people responded to a government consultation, was hailed by equality campaigners as ''a proud day for Scotland''. AAP, PA
