Bullied NY bus monitor Karen Klein calling it quits

The generous donations received by Karen Klein -- $700,000 in all – have allowed her to leave her job, and those who taunted her, far behind. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The bullied bus monitor made famous by a viral video is calling it quits after receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations.

Karen Klein, a grandmother from suburban Rochester, N.Y., told the Associated Press on Friday that she is leaving her job. She has been a bus monitor for the Greece School District for three years.

Klein, 68, became a household name after a viral video showed four seventh-graders taunting and berating her with insults and profanity. The 10-minute video sparked worldwide outrage against the boys' behavior. An online fundraising effort on Klein's behalf raised more than $700,000 in donations.

She told the AP her retirement is not because of what happened on the last day of school in June, but because it's time to move on.

The NOW w/ Alex Wagner panelists talk about how Karen Klein, a 68-year old school bus monitor who was bullied relentlessly from a group of seventh grade kids.

Klein reportedly made only $15,506 a year, according to the Indiegogo campaign page, "Lets Give Karen – The bus monitor – H Klein A Vacation!." At the time of the campaign, Southwest Airlines also offered to fly Klein and nine other people to Disneyland for free.

The school district in Greece, N.Y., where the incident happened, has suspended the four Athena Middle School students for a year. Two of the students and the father of a third have apologized to Klein via statements to local police.

She was on the bus because of district policy. If you think that's "stupid", you're begging the question.

oh no, she's not quitting (after only 3 years, its not retirement, its quitting) because of what happened, its because she now has $700,000 to spend however she sees fit.

F*ck u people. Oooohhh she she she got all da monies now and she she she don't deserve it. Whaaat about the the the pooooor t-teachers and and and F*CK U PEOPLE! F*CK THE TEACHERS!!!

Listen here, I remember High School and we had little ol ladies like this who were very kind to us and seemed to give a sh*t ok. These damn teachers don't know how to teach. THEY know they're getting THEMSELVES into a reeeaaalllyyy bad situation and I have no sympathy whatsoever for public skool teachers. F*ck em. Now college professors are a different story, I have GREAT respect for college professors.

Listen, if you're still dumb enough to go into public skrool education and then actually lol STAY there then you deserve your sh*tty situation. You can't win as a public skrool teacher. You got da parents, the PTA, the county, the this and that association and all kinds of retarded B$ to put up with.

This lady just VOLUNTEERED her time out of the goodness of her heart and they sh*t all over her. That's why we're paying her. You public skrool teachers know better and refuse to better yourselves against an utterly hopeless, lost and futile situation that you will NEVER win.

Maybe if you public skrool teachers would STAND UP for yourselves and actually learn how to deal with kids every once in a while, people would have more respect for you.

Teachers aren't allowed to do much more than teach. You should really get your facts straight before typing a meaningless post with horrible grammar. Teaching is one of the lowest paid and highest stress professions that requires a college education. I am a product of public education, and the issues I've seen with it mostly lie with disrespectful students. As a student, I witnessed other students being verbally abusive to teachers, and the teachers can't say a thing back because of laws protecting the students. If parents would raise their children to respect those in positions of authority, there would be far less issues with bullying. I imagine that you have no respect for those who have taught you what you know. Yes, people have taught you what you know, including your horrendous grammar and spelling.

Amazing how many people become totally okay with elder abuse--when donations are involved. Money was given to her freely. If you were as old as she, being abused at work, and could suddenly retire, I'd LOVE to see you "donate" the money. Kids learn to treat elders respectfully from their parents. I can see why kids act the way they do with their jealous, envious parents that put more value on money than common decency and class.

$700 grand is not "retirement." That's a lotto win.

Granted, the kids should be severely punished, but well over half a million in cash because people feel "sorry" for her? GMAB

Lets face it the woman may have ONLY made $15,000+ annually, however she only worked at the outside a couple of hrs a day.

She also didn't do the job she was being paid to do. What if one of the other students had been being bullied, would she have just sat there?

No she couldn't have hit them or even screamed at them, but she could have had the driver pull over and sit there until the bulling stopped or use a cell phone call the school or the parents to come get them.

By the way I saw the boy that took the video and he was NOT one of the kids that did the bulling.

And I also think all these threats to the kids and their family, even their pets was far worse than what happened to her. I'm also curious about all these interviews she's done not once did she ask for that to stop. Just bring it all to an end.

Good for her! She does not have to put up with that bullying idiot mentality!! Just another example of how the male species wants to beat a woman down...BUT NO! She knows she does not have to put up with such a toxic environment. LADIES: NEVER tolerate abuse, bullying, misongyny or harassment of ANY kind...Men that do that are weak cowards (boys that do it are the same) and should be put in THEIR place. Be strong ladies!!!

Seems very convenient to call it quits after making a huge payday. She got the vacation that she said she wanted to take her grandchildren on, twofold. She got the vacation from the resort in Florida and another one from Southwest. Why not donate that cash that was raised to fight bullying on school properties?

School bullying is a huge issue in our nation, and needs to be brought to an end. I was bullied in school over 15 years ago. There were no anti-bullying laws to protect me. I was suspended from school on a number of occasions for standing up to bullies and trying to protect myself. Where is the payday for everyone else affected by bullying? Or do we still have to suffer just because camera phones and youtube didn't exist back then?

Actually, I just read that on July 26 she announced that she was going to be donating some of the money. In the statement it said that she has a granddaughter with down syndrome and grandson with autism so she has some groups in mind. Granted it doesnt say how much she plans to give or anything, but it sounds like she has a plan to save some of the money (hopefully she is able too). I have to admit that I didnt do my research on this as earlier as I should have considering this did come out a few days ago. Good for her that she is planning to share some of her new found wealth!

Leave the lady alone. Everyone donated out of the goodness of their hearts. In the end the government will take at least a 1/3 of it and she'll get to rest awhile.

i guess the problem some people are having with this is that she seems like a patsy. while it is true that you are limited in what you can do with kids, you are not helpless. there are steps you can take. just sitting there and taking it, quite frankly sounds as if she has been abused verbally before and that is how she has learned to deal with it. i think 700,000 is ridiculous. donated to st. jude, donate to ronald mcdonald house, the american cancer society. there are good causes that need your money. this woman deserves your pity, certainly, but come on, more than half a million dollars for something that scores of people have had happen to them and they didn't end up rich. that's completely asinine.

Jealous? lol It has nothing to do with being jealous, shows how much you know! Answer me this, if it was just for " a vacation" then why wasn't the site shutdown when it got to $20,000 or even $30,000, that would have made a good vacation and thank everyone and say we have enough for a nice vacation for karen, BUT they kept it open because they saw it growing and growing and that isn't greed? lol That is just taking advantage of the situation and the generous people who donated and nothing more, simple as that!

                        Cmach,

It has nothing to do with jealousy, it has to do with morals. If you go to the site Indiegogo where the donations were made, you will see a LOT more people worthy of all that money. One example and this has been mentioned before is a young Military man who was in Afghanistan and had both his legs blown off, his wife and family are asking for donations for his rehabilitation. Karen Klein would have visited that site and would have watched the donations grow and as "we the people " mentioned, why wasn't it stopped at $20,000 or $30,000? that would have given her a very nice vacation. Do you really think that by kids calling her names earned her over $700,000? She wasn't physically hurt.

She failed to do her job properly and just sat there, did not take their names down and did not report them. Teachers and other bus monitors get bullied all the time but do you see them crying and just sitting there doing nothing? Personally I think she is full of greed and you know what they say about greed. " greed is the core of all evil"

And in the end. The people who donated did so all on their own. When they saw that it was getting real high, they could have stopped donating. They didn't.

What question??? About them stopping it when it got to be a bunch of money??? Well. To start with.. Karen did not have any control over this . You DO remember that this was started by a guy who felt bad for her right?????? And you do realize that the people contributing to this fund knew how much it was and yet still continued to contribute... Are you with me here??? Am I typing too fast?? Ok good....So.. the guy who started this was probably grinning from ear to ear, thinking this was both awesome and crazy, but fantastic too... He doesn't get this money remember..... He did put a stop date.. And when it stopped, it was a huge bunch of bucks. It is what it is...

And JC. Karen never asked for a damned thing...And for you to call a 15,000 dollar a year bus monitor greedy is the epitome of dumb...

So did I answer you we the people??? Or did it go over your head?

GO Karen... Take care of your family... I do hope you use some money to help others, but.... WTH it's yours...And ignore the jealousy of those who wish they were in your shoes.

I say she's greedy even at a 15k a year bus monitor. Really you can't call her a bus monitor because she didn't monitor the bus. So really she was a 15k a year sit her lazy ass on the bus.

Of course those children deserve being disciplined. Yet, only in America can one sit on there fat ass and get rewarded. Enjoy your donated money, your free flights, and Disneyland trip. The real victim here are the kids that are now kicked out of school for a year for what happen. This lady was giving a job that she clearly wasn't doing and then cries that she's the victim and ends up with 700k out of it. If she had been doing her job then none of this would of happen. She should of told the kids to settle down and if they didn't then they needed to be reported and maybe even get the police in on it. But no she sat there and just like just about every kid they are going to keep going to see how much they can get away with. She let this happen, so not only is she not the victim but she should of been fired for letting this happen. The only people that are happy that this lady got all this money are the same people that wants people to feel sorry for them because they never get what they want out of life. Work for your money and stop acting like someone else should do it for you.

Sure she is going to retire, at her rate of pay she would be working 46 years to get the money people donated to her for 15 minutes of "shame". One of the biggest problems in this country is; don't try to fix something just throw money at it to make yourself feel better. What can we expect from a society that blames one political party for spending too much and raises taxes just to vote in the other political party that spends just as much and raises taxes. Is it too much to ask out of our society to just stand up and say enough regarding irresponsible behavior without feeling they need to financially "repair" the perceived victim? If this was a court case the Judge would throw out or severely reduce the amount as actions does not in any way equal the financial restitution awarded.

It just goes to show what a lousy job we are doing raising our children. I was taught to respect my elders and authority figures-and ESPECIALLY eldery people! She didn't do anything to trigger this- it's just a bunch of spoiled brats on a bus who think it's funny to make someone cry because they know she can't get up and smack the S**t out of them! It's upsetting to see how many kids are becoming apathetic @!$%#s because their folks think money takes the place of time! Parents- RAISE your kids right! Teach them to have empathy, compassion and to help others in need- to THINK before they speak and realize that words can hurt! If I caught my son doing that, he wouldn't see the light of day for a month and he would be sent to this woman's house to help her with chores!

Collecting all that money and then what? Sorry, but she strikes me as someone bordering on being a whiner and 'everyone owes me something.' Too bad. She has never even publicly thanked people or offered to do anything with that funding. Not cool.

If you want to pay more taxes to pay more salary to what is probably at most a 5 hour a day job, 180 days a year, be my guest. If you've done the math, you'll see that she gets paid about $18 an hour.

The parents of these kids should have to pay a percentage of what they receive for a year to her. Parents only seem to learn how to parent these days if it inconvenience them or affects them economically. For any kid to have such nasty disrespect for others is unacceptable. They learned at home such disrespect.

We as a society have sanctioned such behavior towards ones elders.
