Police: Man pushes woman, baby out of third-floor window

Authorities say they have arrested the man accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend at her Jersey City home and forcing her out a third-floor window while she was holding her infant in her arms Friday morning.

The Hudson County prosecutor's office said police apprehended Frederico Bruno, 19, in Belleville, N.J. Friday evening. He was found inside a refrigerator in a vacant building near where his siblings live.

Bruno's family members said he went to their home after the alleged attack and slept for most of the day. When he woke up, he told his teenage niece and nephews what had happened.

He claimed his ex-girlfriend was trying to stab him while holding their baby, family members told NBC 4 New York. That's when he pushed her and the child out the window and fled, they said.

Police say Bruno had a key to his ex-girlfriend's Jersey City apartment and had been hiding inside Friday morning, waiting for her to get home. When she returned with her baby, who is also the suspect's child, and a friend, Bruno allegedly attacked her.

Both the 20-year-old mother and the 3-month-old baby are hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

The 21-year-old friend threatened to call 911 and Bruno allegedly turned on her, slicing her up with a household cutting device and leaving her for dead, police said. Then he ran down the fire escape and, with a table, continued to assault the mother of his child, who was lying on the ground on top of her baby after the two plunged three stories out the window, police said.

"I know he's always had a bad temper but I never thought he could do this," said Bruno's niece, 17-year-old Ahsley Archelus. "To a baby? How could he do this to his own baby?"

The friend is in surgery at a nearby hospital. She's listed in critical condition.

Police cordoned off the area surrounding the four-story building on Rutgers Avenue as they searched for Bruno, whom they called armed and dangerous.

The mother of the child had an order of protection against him, authorities said.

Bruno is facing three counts of aggravated assault charges. Bail was set at $300,000 for each count. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

I tell you, if when Bruno's mother was pregnant she thought of an abortion. Republicans said "NO" he may grow up to be the scientist who found the cure for cancer. Now look what Bruno has grown up and done. So Republicans say "Hang Him"

JennyLee your right! When the population of prison finds out what he did, and they will, they'll take care of the POS with their own brand of justice. Let's hope they make him pay over and over and over again before one of them actually kills him. That still won't be enough justice. Many states either won't apply the death penalty or it takes years and years of appeals etc.. before it happens. I can see that a few people have actually been proven innocent and yes, thank God, they got released intsead of the death penalty. However, in cases where there is no doubt, when the criminal admits what they did or is caught redhanded then what is the point of supporting them for life at the tax payers expense??? Here in OR we actually have some murderers coming up for parole decades before their potential release date and getting out!!!!! This guy is very young!!! He could potentially be released early enough that he could find another woman to stalk and kill and maybe have another child as well that would be in danger. 3 counts of attempted murder, 3 counts of aggravated assault, breaking and entering , breaking a restraining order, stalking and harassment charges all should be brought against this SOB. I'd bet though he'll try an insanity defense and some bleeding hearts will want him put into a psychiatric hospital where they'll "fix him" call him "rehabilitated" and turn his butt loose on society once again.

The real problem here is that America has become so dumbed down in the last 100 years that they've forgotten how to deal with the scumbags of the earth. You don't imprison them for 50 years at taxpayer expense to the tune of $50K+ a year, no matter how many jobs are created in the correctional system; you don't give them the death penalty and then, well, imprison them for 20 years to life at taxpayer expense while their lawyers incessantly make appeals; you don't call them insane and put them in plush medical facilities and excuse them for their crimes, and you don't make them TV or media news celebrities - you HANG, SHOOT, ELECTROCUTE, INJECT, or in certain circumstances DRAW AND QUARTER them in public as fast as possible. THAT is swift justice that all can understand and accept and a way to teach potential James Holmes to be's or thugs like Bruno that it is not a good idea to turn into a monster. Anything less does nothing, and if people have not learned this by now, they are, well, dumbed down beyond repair.

JennyLee, you are a moron. A good chunk of the prisoners in GenPop are in there for doing the same thing. If anything, putting a looped video of the attack on a bigscreen would just add to his street cred in the lockup.

You people have a very sick and twisted sense of justice, willing to try and use existing prisoners as your personal vendetta squad, when you would no sooner turn and pull the same thing on the others you would hire for your little brute squads, if you had a chance. Do you really think the average prisoner facing 20 years is going to dance to your need for vengeance? Do you honestly think they wouldn't just turn and slice you seven ways to Sunday for being idiotic enough to ask? You really have no f*cking clue what you are talking about at all...and with the attitudes you espouse for them, vindicate them by demonstrating that you as a society really have no problem with using extreme violence to avenge yourselves, which would make their own acts otherwise completely socially acceptable.

Think about it.

JP, once the prison system was privatized, the death penalty ended. Prisons are now business opportunities. The wealthy invest in them and earn a profit from their stocks. It is vital that they are fulled beyond capacity to keep the money flowing. Our government pays more than the average family makes to house one criminal. The actual cost is only a fraction of what is paid. There is nothing about the American system that is moral. Even ministers are in the game for the take.

James Buchanan - Apparently, you've never been to prison. Prisoners who are sent to prison for crimes against children are NEVER given "street cred" for their crimes. You won't find one prisoner in the general population who openly admits doing such things. Most of those people spend their entire incarceration in Ad-Seg (solitary confinement). Three things are dealt with most harshly by inmate populations: crimes against children, snitching and crimes against women (pretty much in that order).

I love when people say someone else has no f-ing clue what they're talking about while exposing their own blatant ignorance. You act like we just throw our prisoners in a pit and it becomes "Lord of the Flies" in there. Prisons have a well-established hierarchy and social structure, forged through fire. Societal aspects of prison populations are complex and whether you want to believe it or not, inmates DO NOT praise and laud child abusers, child killers and child rapists. Oftentimes, unspeakable and repeated things are done to those people in retaliation.

Instead of being snarky and combative, perhaps you could try knowing what YOU are talking about before you come off looking like a shrub.

duuug "aggravated assault"? Really? You mean he really wasn't trying to kill her?
Hummm, sum-ums wrong with this picture, here!!

duuug - you are correct. What's wrong here is of course his actions, but also the touchy/feely justice system - charging him with aggravated assault, instead of 3 charges of attempted murder? He laid in wait in the apartment and tried to kill them, and he continued the attacks after the initial outburst. Both of those show premeditated actions, and showed an intent to kill.

EngEsq I'm sorry, I'm not normally this crass, but... Kill this piece of garbage. Slowly and painfully.

I agree that the death penalty has it's place - I don't believe with ''slowly and painfully'', because then about revenge, and Capital Punishment should be about punishment and deterring future crimes, and not about revenge. So, put him to death... yes, but do it quickly and humanely.

@JamesBuchanan and jmwhite540..not only do prisoners take action against those who do harm to children, but they also teach those who would do harm against their mother. In the long run, just about the only family member who will come visit a prisoner will be their mother. A mother and child has a bond like no other. Prisoners do NOT like those who do harm to mothers. Ever.

PS If we could only come up with a punishment that would actually deter others from committing a crime.

Too many people think they "own" other people and are entitled to revenge should the relationship end. They usually try to take their revenge in the court system. We live in a world where it is all about "us" and what we want, it is sad so few try to treat others as they want to be treated and try to live moral lives.

I was involved in a case where a maintenance man with a key to my apartment had a grudge because I had to call the city on him for constantly turning our water off during the day without notice, which is illegal where I lived at the time. The night after he had gotten a fine from the city for this the power happened to go out in the building due to a storm, and he took it as an opportunity to try and terrorize my girlfriend and me, pounding on our windows and telling us we better call the police now. We had weapons to protect ourselves, but we still just called the police and waited for them to come arrest the lunatic. When they showed up, he said all kinds of crazy stuff to them, and they came back and asked us if the guy had a history of mental problems, and we told them we didn't know about his medical history but we were certain he was violent and crazy (he had had blowouts with my other fellow building tenants before this and I had heard them all, and knew the guy was unstable, which all of us told the landlord, but the guy was the landlord's friend's son so he would just tell us he would talk to him and then nothign would happen). They then told us that we couldn't do anything about him pounding on our windows since he was the maintenance man, and we were renters and didn't actually Own the windows (i know, can you believe that crazy @!$%#???).

Well anyway, they actually let him go up to his apartment to sleep it off even though they told us they thought he had mental problems. I was pissed. So I went across the street after the police left to go ask my friend if we could crash at his place because we thought the guy might have a key to the apartment and we didn't feel safe. So as I'm coming back the guy jumps out the bushes saying he's going to kill me, sucker punching me and then trying to choke me to death. I already had my cell phone in my hand with 911 ready to go because the police told us if he said even a single word to us again that night they could get him for harrassment. So i was actually able to dial 911 as he was attacking me. He kept trying to grab the phone while he was choking me and I could hear 911 repeatedly yelling what is going ON what is going on where are you, so luckily i was able to fight the guy enough, even though he was twice my size and had the advantage of surprise, to yell out and my girlfriend heard me, so she came running out with her phone dialing 911 and screamed that the police were coming. So the guy ran up to his apartment. Cops were there in a minute or 2 and they all ran up to his apartment, knocked the door down and dragged the guy screaming out of his apartment. They apoligized up and down to us saying sorry but their hands had been tied before, but we were just flabbergasted.

Well, they came back a couple hours later after hauling the guy away and told us he was posting bail and would be out in a couple hours probably, and that we should leave and go somewhere else because it turned out the guy had a criminal record of violence. We immediately left and only returned to get our stuff the next day with some friends and he was out there when we returned talking loudly with his crew of workers telling them we didn't know who we messed with. Well, the cops only charged him with simple assault. We couldn't believe it. The guy explicity said he was going to kill me and was clearly trying to do so. I had bruises on my neck and on my back and there was the 911 call where you can hear the guy going wild like a maniac. We went to court and he got a 6 month sentence, but I couldn't believe they didn't charge him with more, especially with his criminal record. You think things are cut and dry, but it just doesn't work that way, which really sucks for victims of people like this in our country. You really don't know how much I wanted to shoot this guy. But we are decent people and we wanted to do things without blood on our hands. If it happened again, I'm not really sure I would ever give the cops the benefit of the doubt again.

Thanks, Crimson. Ya know whatthe big problem I think in my case was the cops basically wanted to get this guy from the beginning but they told us their hands are tied and I really do believe them. What they were telling us is that they take this guy down to the magistrate (for what he did the first time, pounding on our wondow screaming and threatening us) and he would basically have declared him whatever the code is for a mental case, and that nothing would have happened. They really needed physical evidence to do anything. SO essentially this guy had to actually hurt us to be properly dealt with. This is a big opart of why i did not use a weapon because they explicitly told me that if this crazy guy had ended up with ANY marks on him at all and he claimed I attacked him (which he did when they took him down the second time) that I would have to go to jail as well, and we would both be charged and then have to defend ourselves in court, and sure enough in court he also claimed I attacked him and made up this long crazy story which fortunately because I let myself be a victim had absolutely no evidence to support it.

It's crazy how the system works like that. You HAVE to be a victim to get them thrown away like they deserve. Lucky I am a lot smarter than this guy, and had all this going on in my head while it was happening, so when i fought back I was merely trying to keep him off me rather than turn into the aggressor and throw punches at him. In any other situation where I didn't know for sure that someone was trying to trick me into getting thrown in jail (I forgot to mention that while he was choking me he was telling mew that No one believed me, and the cops weren't going to come back, a real sinister crazy man ) I would have been equally as aggressive. Now if my girlfriend was in the mix I would have outright killed the man with a knife, a really really big sharp knife, but sometimes you have to just outsmart people like this.

I am pretty liberal (well I don't really fit into any politicial category to be honest, my views are across the spectrum), but I am totally for capital punishment, though I want the evidence to be so overwhelming that the possibility of executing an innocent is impossible, and I'm not even quite sure that is possible in most cases where capital punishment could be used. But anyway, yea I am a big comic book collector and I have always felt we needed a Batman vigilante taking care of the real threats to our society since cops are now relegated to being ticket maids, revenue generators, domestic dispute refs, etc. This is why we have so many non violent criminals in prison. Herb, a simple plant, is easy to smell and detect, and brings in a lot of money. If these cops had come down to my apartment the first time the guy was threatening us and smelled Herb for instance, they would definitely have gone after me instead, and then I'd be the criminal, one that was easy to deal with and easy to get money from. It's the way things work.

And don't even get me started about the 2 vans we have had stolen within 2 years of each other and both times told outirght by the cops that they don't try to catch them at all, unless of course they happen across them while running tags, which they said hardly ever happens cuz the criminals ditch the vans so quickly after using them for other crimes. Basically, what usually happens is a citizen reports the vehicle abandoned after it's been sitting from the day it was stolen for probably a week (usually takes a citizen that long to say, hey this car's been sitting here unmoved and I don't know whose it is) and then the cops process it. The Kicker is we had to pay both times to get our van back from the police. So they profit from the activities of the Car Thieves, NOT from catching them (car thieves don't have any @!$%#ing money lol, they are technically indigent).

And no, the cops don't even dust for prints, even though you can say hey look there are clearly prints on this or that (which we did because they handled but left stuff in the car that was ours that they didn't think was valuable even though it was actually worth thousands of dollars, leaving clear finger prints on stuff that we knew was not there before; it was art and thank the universe we got that back becasue it had already sold at auction and we were delivering it when the van was stolen). It's definitely enraging, especially when you feel like you are being treated like a nuisance by the police because they have to get out of their car and do some paperwork and aren't providing them a high adrenaline situation which seems to be what they really get off on.

@abolish - Very, very sorry to read about your experience. Things like this are all too common. I'm also fairly liberal on social issues, and fairly conservative on financial and justice issues. The problem is of course pieces of @!$%# like this guy, but the problem is just as much our justice system, or in-justice system.

Part of the problem (at least here in Canada) is that our Judges and prosecutors and the whole criminal justice system, is largely made up of former Lawyers - and Lawyers have years of 'defending' these pieces of @!$%# as their history. They see the criminal at the product; as the reason for everyone's job; as something to be cycled around and around through the system.

The rest of us know that 10-20% of the criminals account for 80-90% of the repeat crimes, so these guys need to be locked up, forever, period - or in the case of murder or attempted murders, they need to be put to death.

''They'' say that life sentences or that Death Penalty isn't a deterrent - but I'll tell you what, it sure as hell deters the guy that's put to death or is doing life in prison. That piece of @!$%# never commits another crime, and that would take care of 80-90% of all the problems.

Thanks ToddC. What was really frustrating too was that we couldn't go after these guys, the maintenance man and my rich landlord (who is himself pretty much the biggest lawyer in that town and whom we had called repeatedly aftyer this crazy guy became the maintenance man to tell him that he was crazy and doing crazy things to the tenants, driving them out, and we even had other tenants who said they had also called the landlord to report the guy), without them having access to our new address. And I am certain now that my landlors is corrupt as hell after all the slimy stuff he said and the way he dealt with the situation, like for instance demanding that I sign a waiver (which prompted me to tell him to @!$%# off) to get my half month's rent back since we could no longer live there seeing as the police told us the guy had a criminal record and the guy continued on threatening us even when we went back with a crew to get our stuff. We also decided to just move on because we determined that touching these honorless men's money would contaminate our souls. I guess what I learned form the whole thing is that you think things are cut and dry and that Justice is obvious, but it really isn't to people that have become so numb that they just don't care anymore. Where are you Batman?!?!?!?!?!

Agreed. No one should ever, ever, EVER shove a poor little infant off a three story building like that. I really do hope the infant lives - despite the injuries it may suffer, it can still manage in life.

However, if he dies, abandon all sense of common fairness for this @!$%#. Send him away.

Directly to the fires of Mount Vesuvius, where he shalt die a most sufferable death. Just the same way he ended that infant's life.

Our "justice system" has become a mechanism for providing even greater wealth to the wealthy through privatized, for profit, prisons. Death penalties, however well deserved, do not create revenue whereas, long terms of incarceration do.

Of course, if you are not among the wealthy you stand a risk of being wrongly accused and incarcerated simply because you cannot afford overpriced lawyers to get your ass out of trouble.

In short, we are a capitalistic police state in which we, the working class, provide the wealth that is placed into the hands of lawyers, politicians and the wealthy investors in privatized prison corporations.

After decades of liberal influence, now you ask "What has our justice system come to?!"

@ AbolishTaxes, I hear you, but you just found out that the roll of the police is not to protect you (Protect and Serve, just feel good advertising). That is your job. The SCOTUS has upheld that the police have no duty to protect citizens. (Google Warren v. District of Columbia, it is a very harrowing story) Perhaps now you understand why so many of us wish to have weapons for self defense. (Not sure what state you live in, but I know that in most states, you would have been with in your rights to shoot your maintenance man, especially after the incident involving the police Of course, had you shot the guy, you could have ended up like Zimmerman) Just glad to hear you made it out OK. That is not often the case, especially with the ladies and baby involved in this case.

FYI, It is his RIGHT to get bail, but @ $300K per account, I doubt he'll make bail.

Just wait a couple more decades (if that long) and ask "What has our healthcare system come to?!"

And where is all the furor over banning tables and tall buildings? I know it was mentioned earlier, but I thought there would be more discussion on it. ;-)

And BTW, most of this (including the Colorado shooting), and I know a couple comments have been made alluding to this, is a symptom of much larger issue. "What has our society come to?!"

Bail is usually 10%, but I even doubt he can come up with that. The other reason it is $300K x 3 is probably because he is a flight risk.

it is outrageous that bail is set for this mad man. he is a danger to the public and bail should have been denied. he most likely can't meet the bail amount but it should not even be an option.

One can hope. I think that kid was still in its infancy - at that age, surviving an injury like that may or may not be possible (I have hope though - hope that the kid lives and excels to a level far FAR beyond that of his piece of slug dung father).

If he dies, though, I want to personally end his life. And make him suffer - just the way his own child suffered before it died.

Agreed. I am also hopeful regarding the infant. Babies are very resilient. It's amazing what their little bodies are able to withstand and possibly this child may make it. The article is not revealing the details so unless there's a follow up to this, who knows.

The other side of this coin, what if baby makes it but mom doesn't or mom is disabled and unable to properly care for the child??? Add to this if the child makes it, sooner or later they will learn the truth and that will be a terrible burden to carry. No matter what angle you look at this, it's a terrible tragedy with life changing ramifications for all. Yes, we can all hope that the child makes it and excels way beyond this terrible start in it's new life as well as hoping for mom and her friend.

Scotty- The problem is bail is set at 300k each, however generally only 10% of it is needed to be released, bailbondsmen put up the other share. 90k is still alot but not enough.

PFA's are a good thing IF you can get the b*****d before they do anything. Most police departments will not act on them unless the person is physically at the holders door, but by that time it is too late.

As for having a key, I cannot understand not changing the locks, but maybe she was in the process of doing it. I just hope the three of them survive.

He deserves to go away for a very, very long time. The way our justice system has been functioning the last couple of decades, young guys (under 21) who don't murder someone get all sorts of perks and incentives that lower their jailtime, especially if their rap sheet isn't particularly long. That's not a political statement and I'm not up for political debates or finger-pointing, feel free to check out the DOC in your state and see if I'm wrong. If the victims survive, I imagine he'll be out before the kid hits grade school.

Doesn't seem accurate to have "aggravated assault" charges for the 3 month old. How would you expect a baby to survive a fall from the third floor AND a beating with a table? Should be two charges of aggravated assault and one charge attempted murder.

Pushing the mother and the child out a 3rd floor window should defenitely qualify for two counts of attempted murder. Does any reasonable person NOT realize tht that far of a fall likely results in death especially for the child??? He also attacked the friend and left her for dead qualifying for the 3rd count of attempted murder!!!!

                          You're a jackass? How's that?

Oh, about the case? Well, a man pushed a woman and baby out of a 3rd floor window, slashed another woman up and left her for dead before running down to beat the woman and baby with a table while they lie on the ground. Certainly can't see where monster, innocent, and jail came from. What could people be thinkng on here?

Alright... for his actions, this loathsome piece of trash should be disembowled with a coat hanger through an existing body cavity with no extra incisions by a guy with the shakes. That better?

What are you REALLY after? You are reading about a horrid event and want people to put completely different spins on it? Seriously, give us YOUR take on it, since you seem to have something different in mind.

This is attempted murder times 3, (Premeditated on top of it)

Plus aggravated assault in the 1st degree, plus he violated the protection (restraining order) order she had on him as well plus,

He was in the apt without permission so he could be charged with trespassing if not burglary as well. ( I would be charging this lowlife with everything I could so he spends as much time as possible in prison and that's if all these victims survive their injury's and no one dies.

He left the girlfriends friend cut up so badly that he left her for dead, then this excuse for a man pushes both his "Ex" girlfriend and their child out a 3 story window trying to kill them both! (I'm shocked they both survived the fall!)

Then this ass-wipe runs down the fire escape to finish the job and starts beating the ex-girlfriend (which has covered the child with her own body) with a table to try and finish her off (A Table much less!) IF that isn't attempted murder then I'm peter pan. Holy sh1t this guy is out of his mind period and I'm being nice here.

I pray and hope that all 3 survive their injuries and can testify to put this guy away for life at the very least.

What has become of people these days?

Does anyone ever wonder how this guy could turn out so bad? He also was a baby at one point in time. I mean, what does happen to people to get this far gone?

Drugs, gangs, etc. I read about it every week unfortunately, women get pregnant by loser men and have to suffer the consequences. I'm not saying this is her fault but if women would set the bar higher with the men they are dating maybe horrible things like this won't happen.

Don't be afraid to say it, I agree. Its better to have no man at all, to be alone, than to have some seriously deranged person as your sex partner. One look at this guy from the get go should have warned her off.

aggravated assault... now I know I'm just a hick from the midwest, but generally, in the community of rational human beings, pushing someone out a 3rd story window and slashing someone to ribbons means you wanted to kill them, but hey, like i said, us midwest folk tend to see things a bit more black and whte apparently.

Good thing these women didn't have a gun. Someone might have gotten injured.... (sorry, just had to point out the obvious).

So much for the restraining order. Those things don't seem to be worth the paper they are printed on. As if someone attacking you is gonna stop if you show them the paper/order. :/

The only good a reatraining order does is it gives the police another "minor" charge to put on him after he does something like this ...pretty dam sad.

Well those restraining order are NOT worth the paper they're printed on!!!!! Laws need to change so that those orders actually have some teeth to them. Maybe then these POS's would stop ignoring them!!! Maybe a minimum 1 year jail sentence for violating them the very first them their broken instead of these creeps continually threatening until they snap and attack like this pig did!!!!

What a coward. This guy needs to be slid down a banister of razor blades and land in a pile of salt. Men don't hit women...period. Only weak cowards do that. And girls....stop dating these so called bad boys....they are called that for a reason...wake up.

Many of these "bad boys" start out loving, attentive model citizens. It's when they have the girl and have them saddled with a child as well that they start the violence. Many of these guys are popular well liked and respected young men and their friends and family can't beleive they would do something like this etc.. etc. Often the young women aren't believed when they complain of abuse to those that know the couple because the creeps can be so personable and well liked.

I honestly dont know wich crime was worse ..pushing the woman and a baby out of a third story window or the fact that he was only charged with counts of aggrivated assault. ... WTF!

I agree, I dont understand what is wrong with people in this world. He should have been charged with attempted murder.

I agree, how could beating on someone "with a table" after pushing them out a third story window not be considered attempted murder. And don't forgot the poor girl he sliced up and left for dead.
