Suspected gunman killed by police after second Indiana cop shooting

LAWRENCE, Ind. - A man suspected of shooting an Indiana police officer died in a shootout, police said early Saturday.

K-9 Officer Matt Fox of Fortville, Indiana, was trying to perform a traffic stop on a male driver who refused to stop, police said according to NBC News station WTHR in Indianapolis

A pursuit started, ending at a housing subdivision in the 7800 block of Clearview Lane.

Police said Fox was shot through his windshield and was struck in the head and the wrist. He was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he was said to be alert and talking to officers. Fox was listed in serious but stable condition, awaiting surgery for his injuries.

The incident follows a shooting in the Indiana town of Pendleton on Thursday, in which a bystander was killed and two police officers wounded. A police dog was also killed, and the suspected gunman was found dead early Friday, possibly by a self-inflicted gunshot.

Read the original story at NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis

The suspect in the shooting in Fortville, which is around 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis, then fled the scene and was again chased by police. He stopped near Fox Road and Sunset Cove and got into another shootout with police officers, positioning himself between two buildings and firing at officers as they approached.

Police shot and killed the suspect, according to Hancock County Sheriff's Department dispatchers.

Two officers, one from IMPD and another from Lawrence, were reportedly grazed, either by bullets or shattered glass, but were treated and released at the scene.

The K-9 which Fox handles was not injured and remains at the scene of the shooting.

An IMPD spokesperson tells Eyewitness News a police dog from Lawrence was shot in a patrol car at the second shooting scene. The condition of that K-9 has not yet been confirmed, but the dog was said to be undergoing surgery.

The suspect in the shooting has not yet been identified.

more gun violence, or more coverage of gun violence since the theater shooting caught big headlines and agencies are trying to milk it for all it's worth.

tough one.

Not much info to go on for either incident. Sad about the bystander and hope the others, dog included, make full recoveries. But, I want more details to why the suspects shot at the cops in the first place and why the suspects were being pulled over or contacted by the police. In other words I want to know what caused all this. There is always 2 sides to every story.

The shooting in Pendleton (near where I live) was a 59 year old guy who had been very controlling of his wife for a long time. She had gone back into the workforce and he routinely threatened to sit outside the gate of her employer and shoot co-workers randomly. He had also told her if she ever left him he'd kill people. She did leave him and of course he went off the deep end. She had just had a restraining order put on him when he drove into town, blocked the street with his truck, and started shooting. Basically an unstable nut job. Luckily for the citizens here, both gunmen are dead. No trials to conduct and no paying to house them for the next 30-40 years.

You are rude and stupid...this was a simple traffic stop with a horrible outcome..how do think that this is being milked..frankly it could easily happen to you..Thursday a man who happen to behind another car was shot and killed by a high powered assault rifle...would it be more news worthy had it happen to you or your family?...what this is the truth..it is happening..people need to be alert..our world is not the same world I was brought up in..clearly I will be more alert in my surroundings..any kind of comfrontation anymore or people just stressed and have a agenda we need to be aware..just like the man I mentioned apparently the person that shot him had mentioned to his estranged wife he would kill if she left him and further told him that he just thought he would sit outside her place of work and just shoot her co-workers..that day she got a restraining order..he never got it and then sought to kill her, never made it but killed that poor soul who happen to be behind him in his car on the way home from work..yes..we are milking it...just keep your head in the sand and your eyes closed...

bluelake,

It would be very nice if people like you would not be able to comment unless your comment is relevant to whatever story it is.

It's not enough that news agencies have become political and no longer objective in their "reporting" but we get dumbass political comments from the likes of you that are relevant to nothing. If you need to make a politican statement then make it for a political article.

If you don't care for FOX news then don't read or listen to FOX news.

Criticizing Fox News is like throwing spit balls at a battleship. Fox News has more viewers than any other cable news outlet (that’s apparently why CNN even advertises some of THEIR upcoming events on Fox News) because Fox News comes closer to the concept of “fair and balanced” reporting than just about anyone else.

Liberal zealots will continue to cast stones at Fox News in a futile attempt to silence the competition , but discerning viewers know where to find the least-slanted news reporting – at Fox News. So, all of you haters of Fox News can eat your hearts out because in the arena of competition (the rating wars), your darling newscasts are BIG TIME LOSERS!

Only because white trash racists have no awareness of the meaning of the word "extremism". And are too stupid to realize they are being propagandized -- brainwashed -- by a corporation to vote against their own interests and for those of the corporation.

    Here's a fact for you:

The Liberals in the Continental Congress, lead by John Adams of Massachusetts, drove the Congress to declare independece from Britain.

They were opposed by the Conservatives -- until the Conservatives got what they wanted in exchange for their support:

    Preservation of slavery.

That's why you love the racist FOX, but are too stupid to realize it.

And you might want to brush up on your own history a little bit. It was the Northern states led by President Lincoln that fought a bloody battle to keep the Union whole. It was also about slavery.

Now, it might interest you to know that those Northern States were primarily Republican and the Southern states primarily Democrat. It was the Democrat slave owners that wanted to keep the blacks as slaves.

Do you see any corollaries between the welfare state and pre-civil war America? Do you see the differences between the now primarliy Democrat North and Republican South?

If the writer was trying to avoid confusion with a previous incident, it backfired. With no info available (names of both shooters are available Sunday on local news outlets, but nbc has a skeleton staff on weekends - no updates, just vague outlines.)

One of the links has an erroneous tag - it is on the bottom of the story about the NYPD detective with a kidnap victim tied up in his garage, and it refers to a suspected cop-killer who died in a shootout - he was a shooter of a cop, but thankfully did not kill the officer.

Debra maybe you should learn how to read because even the cops know that a traffic stop could get them killed:

                    #3.10 - Sun Jul 29, 2012 12:35 AM EDT

Joe F, maybe you should read the law. It gives a citizen the right to defend themselves against unlawful entry by the police. It doesn't make it open season on cops, like some pathetic cops are trying to say.

I'll say it again, being a cop is not an overly dangerous job. Most cops that are killed are killed in traffic accidents. The rate of cops who are murdered on the job is 7-8 per 100,000. The rate an average citizen is murdered is 5-6 per 100,000. Cops have a slightly higher chance of being murdered than the average citizen. There are a lot of jobs, like driving a taxi, delivering food like pizzas and being a refuse collector that are far more dangerous than being a cop. But those jobs don't make good tv shows.

I'll use the same argument that the police and others who back them use, if the cops are doing anything illegal, they have nothing to worry about.

There are over 40,000 SWAT raids every year with the majority being for minor drug offenses. 10% of them are botched raids. There are a lot of innocent people killed in these raids and some police officers killed in these raids. What's a person supposed to do when in the wee hours of the morning, a bunch of heavily armed men dressed like soldiers break down your door, shoot your dog if you have one, and you are startled from your sleep and your first thought is to defend yourself and your family. You know you are a law abiding citizen and you're not wanted by the police, so you shoot at the intruders who never identified themselves a police.

When the police kill innocent people in these botched raids, they shrug their shoulders and act like it's nothing, just business. When an innocent homeowner shoots a cop in these botched raids, they have the book thrown at them and some have faced the death penalty.

Sound fair to you? That's why the law was enacted. Maybe the police will make sure they get the right address. Maybe the police will start doing some intel work on tips they get from drug addict informants who are paid for their information, instead of just conducting a raid as soon as possible.

Or is that asking for too much in America?

Always a good idea to fire a few rounds at the police. Assuming you want to be dead and forgotten. What is wrong with people is that for a couple of generations respect for others has gone downhill at a 45 degree angle. People worship thuggery and crime, but forget that they will have to pay the price.

too many on welfare for their whole life with no ambition and nothing to do all day, open border , too many illegals, poor economy, lack of substantial role models , lack of basically any politician in dc that cares about this country all they are is self serving and could care less about the US and its legal citizens, politicians like chicago's mayor that declares their city a sanctuary for illegals, lack of good paying jobs, high unemployment.as the country grows in population size it will get more violent.you can only put so many animals in a cage until it gets to crowded and they start to kill each other.over zealous police enforcement, criminals that have more rights and are sometimes treated better than victims, overcrowded prisons many of which are full to the gills with illegals whom we all pay for and are released and deported and simply walk right back over,go back to their sanctuary city and cause more violent crime.these are just a few of the many reasons that come to mind.

Hey, while we're speaking about victim's rights and bank accounts does anyone know which of George Zimmerman's many PayPal donation websites is the one he uses for his criminal defense, which is the one he uses to cover personal costs, and which is the one his wife sneaks funds out of when the court is recording his phone calls. I wanted to help out his noble effort but I couldn't tell which of his slush funds was to support his criminal defense and which ones were to help him buy a new wardrobe for all those Sean Hannity TV interviews he plans to give.

Also, which one of those websites helps pay back the Klu Klux Klan for their own Sanford, FL bounty hunting (or do we not count that as part of all the acused race bainting going on) as I, too, want to support the white man's main social justice organization... you know, the one that keeps telling white folks that they are the majority population but also tells them that somehow no white man has ever received any governmental assistance for anything from the Homestead Act straight down to big business corn and sugar subsidies. So who do white people call when their civil rights are violated? David Duke? Newt Gingrich? Rush Limbaugh? The Grand Wizard (who I think is Voldemort these days)? Of course since white people have their every hope, wet dream, and quivering desire normatively placated by a democratic regime designed to elevate and celebrate whiteness and denigrate and subjugate any one else deemed "other" yall never need worry about having your civil rights wholesale violated like you've done non-whites all through history. If they were the world would instantly stop and every hack-azz politician with access to a television camera would be out and about trying to feel the white man's ever-suffering burden and throwing everyone else under the "not white so demonize and terrorize because they're not you" bus. Leave it to America to keep white people stupid and placid by continuing to feed your vanity, self-importance, and fears of racial difference.

Yeah, but most of us would rather they keep it and do something good for the state. For starters they could hire some police to patrol downtown Indy and try to make it a safer environment. Then maybe they might start opening some rest areas along the interstate, all you have to do is wander Indiana to know it is in dire need of a little upkeep. The state has physically deteriorated in the last five years.

I have lived in Indiana all of my life. It has a lot of great people and improvements are being made all of the time. I-69 extension is well underway through my old neck of the woods and the State has a balanced budget because they don't dare waste our state tax dollars the way other states do. Could there be more stadiums, museums, parks, etc.? Probably. But with those things come a lot of expense and scuzz. All we lack here is some rain.

The police face a real challenge, because they never know when they are going to encounter a really violent wacko like this guy.

All the people who criticize the police for using their guns really ought to reflect on the real danger police face every time they stop someone.

Cops are a breed of their own, you have to be a little bit of a sociopath to want that job, that's just the way it is control freaks need to assert themselves over others so if you cant be the cop you will be the criminal, the difference is a steady paycheck, cant blame them for wanting a steady paycheck and be legal when it comes to extorting people can you, besides some of you need to be extorted from time to time in order to keep you in line.

These two guys (two psycho ex-husbands with AK-47s) were both white baby boomers. You would think that a man in his 50s would have learned by now that you don't get your own way all the time; and when a woman decides it is over, it's over. Go elsewhere and get over it - it is not such a big deal.

Where in the world did they learn to demand complete submission from their women, and to believe that the only way to respond to a breakup is to shoot up the ex-wife, her coworkers, her family, any bystanders, and any police in sight? Absolute lunacy.

thats the american way? maybe in your america it is , not mine. this country has a lot of problems that have not been addressed for decades by our useless dc politicians but good hardworking americans are some of the most generous people on this planet.fighting and violence is not their way so don't lump the country together as a whole with the animals who are out there who resort to violence.no there is no need to reform gun laws....theres a need to enforce the ones already on the books. the liberal anti-gun media is scaring the general population into thinking there is a gun battle on every corner, or a maniac toting assault weapons into every imaginable public place.couldn't be further from the truth. just once i'd like to see the liberals at msnbc publish a story about honest folks who defended their life from some scum with a legal firearm.honestly...it'll never happen and everyone including big liberal brother knows it.... well said fricsaid.

Humans have been good at violence & killing each other since the beginning of the human race. Guns are just the tools & 911 proved you don't need guns to take massive lives at one time. Look at all the bombings through the years in Europe & the rest of world.

At least we still have the right to protect ourselves against both the criminals & the government, how many other nations can claim this. Bet the Syrians wish their people could have the same weapons at their dictatorial government.

There are already laws that enable the confiscation of weapons from someone who threatens violence - what is needed is a quick-response enforcement. Every protection order that is approved by a judge should come with search&seizure warrants signed at the same time by the same judge.

If the threats were severe enough to limit the freedom-of-movement of the subject, then all property owned, rented, or leased by the subject should be searched for weapons and ammo. Include the locker at work and at the gym/YMCA, the car/trucks/boats/RVs, bus station lockers, shooting range and gun club - let the person threatening violence know it is serious. And if any weapons are found where the subject did not admit the location, seize that vehicle/building also.

I graduated high school in 1970 at the hieght of the drug culture and at my high school we never saw drugs. we were raised right. we were taught about DOPE. i remember some kid moved here from Pittsburg and he was hanging out with us one evening. he said something about drugs and he got collared quick. he was told by our group that the law would be called and he would go to jail if he ever brought that stuff around us. he never did. but i read in the paper after graduation that his little brother was shot in a drug deal. our parents got it across better than we did some how or we understood better.

Drugs or no drugs, (including alcohol) our Justice system seem over focus on creating excuses for peoples bad choices & actions. Time to teach our children & more important adults to accept responsibilities for their own actions instead of excuses: I was drunk, on drugs, I was abused as a child, then there is the proverty excuse or the bad the schools. Always believed it was the parents responsibilty to educate their child not the government.

Lets stop calling for gun control and start calling on government to an act laws that give citizens the means to defend themselves. Have the local and state governments be required to pay the medical bills of innocent people that are victim of gun crime in their jurisdictions. Have the federal government required to pay for defensive gear such as bulletproof vests and other active and passive nonlethal defensive devices and give etch citizen the training to use these devices.

You would see local and state governments make laws curtailing guns all on their own when they become responsible for millions in healthcare costs for those that get shot in their jurisdictions. Also, if gun wielding morons knew that the populace was well armored and well educated in self defense, they would leave the guns at home. No point in trying to shoot a guy who is going to ultimately disarm you and be standing over you when the cops arrive to take you away.

It is is myth that the only protection against guns are more guns. Get educated, get trained, and do your best to make guns a useless tool for the law abiding and criminals alike.

Ever heard of victim compensation? Each state and the federal government has this to compensate (including medical bills) for victims of crime. I am not sure I really understand your thought process on armament and protective gear. So we issue everyone protective gear and then expect the criminals not to also have protective gear? How do you propose that we as members of our society or that members of law enforcement then handle a violent person when they are armored. Do you remember the bank robbery out in California many years ago where the robbers were in full protective gear? Yep, numerous officers shot and killed, hostages shot and killed. It was a really nasty shootout and hostage situation that took too long to remedy because of the protective gear.

cops go out looking for trouble and sometimes they find it. He might have had a brake lite out and look what it lead to. If cops devoted more time chasing down real criminals intstead of idiotic traffic stops over nothing everyone would be better off

And your point is, Uka? By the way, wasn't Ted Bundy caught because of a traffic stop? And what about all those drunk drivers? I guess they should not be stopped either, but the hundreds of thousands injured and the failies of those killed would think differently. If you're in your vehicle, does that mean your exempt from laws? It sounds as though that is what you think.

uka, this guy was on his way to shoot his ex-wife; she had just received a protection order. In other words, his traffic stop triggered the psycho a few minutes early, and the officer took the bullets that were loaded for her. There was probably other suspicious behavior - experienced police officers are pretty good at spotting scum who are up-to-no-good.

True, if the cop had ignored the broken light, he could have avoided serious injury. In my opinion, the actions of the officer were heroic.

I have to say my response is different to this than it would have been less than 30 days ago. I respect the law but sometimes mess up-minor speeding/late taga. Usually a matter of money or kids stuff distracting me. With my 4 year old daughter in the car I had a K9 officer pull me over for a late tag and supposedly speeding-I wasn't-and immediately say that he smoked pot. I had just driven through an area that had a wildfire and assumed that he was young and the do would be able to sort it out. So, when he asked to search my vehicle, I said sure. Then he seemed surprised to see my child in the back-it's a van. Then he claimed the dog smelled pot too and started up a long grueling search that after it became clear that I knew many people in the town and had made a call that he didn't realize to my husband to get an atty and a hwy patrol to this small town if he didn't hear back from me in 20 minutes finally led to him saying that I must have had a marajuana smoker in my car recently.......... I had not because we had just gotten my son's tonsils out. It was total BS and I was scared. I think he was a perv actually. I am not particularly pretty but that is easier for them than some super hot girl. Horrible little man and I will immediately call someone anytime that I am pulled over by cops now.

hey idiotic girl there are way to many cops then we need that is why they pull people over for a brake lite inspection ticket seat belt etc. I framed houses for 37 years you want danger I will put you up 45 ft with a frozen 20ft 2x12 on rafters with ice on them and the wind blowing. I knew cops that watched us and said they would never do it. How bout a guy up 75 floors setting steel beams. Take your fantasy storyies of cops risking their lives and tell it to a kindergarten class, A taxi driver in a big city is 20 times more dangerous then being a cop

Good point UKA the world is a dangerous place period if you don't get mugged or shot by the gang bangers the cops will smash down your door and shoot you while your watching TV at home or at least shoot your dog. before they realize they have the wrong address. PS your post #25.1 does not make you look smart and try III instead of 111 for Roman numerals.

WRONG, oh wise one. There is a difference between what is necessary and what is not. There is a difference between what is wasteful and what is not.

126 different federal, state and local agencies to "help" the so-called poor is a joke. Advertising for food stamps is a joke!. 35% of the population on welfare is a joke compared to 6% just 50 years ago is a joke. The NANNY state is a joke

No one, not even the "mean, disgusting, rotten, dirty air loving, woman hating, bigoted, racist" conservatives know that government should and has the obligation to put up a "stop sign" at a busy intersection.

No, what the REAL joke is, is LIBERALISM!
