NEW YORK -- An NYPD detective has been suspended without pay after a kidnapping victim was found tied up in his Queens garage, sources tell NBC 4 New York.
Sources say Ondre Johnson, a 17-year veteran of the Brooklyn North gang unit, was being questioned by internal affairs about his involvement in the kidnapping of a 25-year-old victim off the street early Friday morning.
Sources say a demand for a $75,000 ransom was made.

Police tracked the victim to the house in St. Albans off the victim's cell phone pings.
When police arrived Friday night, they found the victim tied up in the garage.
Johnson denied any involvement with the kidnapping, but his cousin, Hakeem Clark -- who lives in the other half of the detective's two-family home -- has been charged with kidnapping, along with three other men.

Sources say police found a safe and equipment used to make fake credit cards inside the home.
Law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York that Johnson is not expected to be charged with kidnapping at this point, but he has been suspended and stripped of his badge and his gun as the investigation continues.

He had to know something
Nancy, great to know how our teachers feel about other cultures. May be you should find a gated community and lock your self away from the rest of the world. I'm sure you'll find a lot of Johnys, Susies, and other names from the 50s.
Nancy is entitled to her own opinion!
You are correct, Highway Star, but if she is indeed a teacher, it was inappropriate and unprofessional to voice that opinion in a public forum. Had she posted it on her Facebook page, without the anonymity of this forum, I'm sure her school district would agree with me.
Well then, its a good thing there is a public forum that allows anonymity, isn't it, emmygee? I'm sure you're not advocating naziism, right????
I can think of several reasons why somebody would not want to be named "John Smith."
If any other person named "John Smith" needed their appendix out, and I happened to be in a hospital, the hospital might do surgery on me that I didn't need.
If another person named "John Smith" committed a felony, and I wanted (ever) to live in a state like Florida where former felons couldn't vote, and they don't check other evidence such as driver's license, birth certificates, and Social Security cards, and automatically remove all "John Smith"s from the voting rolls, and I wanted to vote, I would not want to have that name.
Parents who name their children strange and unique names are trying to protect them from anonymity at hospitals, and from mis-identification when they try to vote.
Yup. I'm sure everyone who names their child Qualandria or JaTerevious is really just trying to prevent a mix up In the hospital someday. That must be it.
unique names-Burbin,Fartin,Stinkin,Pooppin,Cryin,and when they reach the age of 18,they can change it to Couch Potatoe,PCnut,Gamer,Uoweme..
Latrina and Latrasha are among my personal favorites...
I'll bet anything the officer was set up by his ne'er-do-well relatives who wanted anybody but a cop as a neighbor. If not shame on him but let's wait for a complete review!
As to the teacher hating the African names of her students - you should be fired. You called your students 'them' - no doubt you fail them before they even try. I hope someone at MSNBC tracks your handle and reports you to your local school district.
Teachers are not supposed to discriminate. I can only imagine what they think of you.
I have witnessed more than my share of prejudice in my days - it always indicates stupidity in that person. No person who is proud of being stupid should be a teacher!
Lana, you forgot to sign your post. What was that name, Kuenta Kintay.
how ;long have these black people been in this country & yet they can not speak, so a white person can understand them
Oh, Lana. Even teachers in this good old US of A are allowed to have an opinion. Tough for the nazis among us, I know, but try to keep up.
He should be in custody so that evidence cannot be tampered with while the evidence is being reviewed.
As to names: the replies show that there is a misunderstanding. Unique names are an attempt to keep a child from being mixed-up with another, accused of somebody else's faults, given medical procedures they do not need, etc. A teacher might do well to learn of the difficulties that some face in trying to go through life with the same name as another person; that is sensitive to the needs of others, and the opposite of being a nasty. A teacher's opinion that states that they do not like students just means they are an inferior teacher, that's all. A teacher who does not like students should not teach; plenty of teachers have lost their jobs this year, and many are good and kind teachers who should take Nancy's job. I'm sure everybody who votes down taxes for local schools would agree: if you have to fire dozens of teachers in a school district, start with those who do not want to be there.
A rose by any other name.... would it smell as sweet??
had this been ANYONE else they would have been arrested, no investigation, just cuffs and a jail cell.
Nice try, but no. People are questioned and released all the time even if they are a suspect in an investigation.
the one who made the mistake should pay it back
1st off do you know what your children are up to or who they are hanging out with 24/7,NO and they live under your roof and you try your best to keep an eye on whats going on with your children because your their parents. Now do you think for a moment this cop is going to be as insightful about his cousin who is a full grown man NOT.and he is in the gang crimes tact of the police who some work several days at a time without going home. I can understand him not knowing what his cousin is up to in this situation, then again maybe he was involved in some way or form or at least had some suspicion but choose to look the other way. we don't know thus far based on what they have told us at this point so until there are more facts who are we to judge as of yet.Oh and those crazy names have always been such it may sound like a normal name you and I know of buy always was spelled differently than what we are accustomed to. and the name in question is the new American by way of visa's. don't you know the us govt hands out hundreds of thousands a year to people from all over the globe, if we were to find other living species on mars they to would get a visa to come live here.
I don't know..... if your child brought home an unwilling kidnap victime, all tied up, and dumped her in the garage, don't you think you'd figure it out?
Paragraphs are our friends. No one knows how to type a readable blog...You make my eyes hurt.
Also. what Screminmimi said....
There may be many points that are true, but to protect him from suspicion of tampering with evidence, he should not be allowed to come anywhere near the crime scene. It only makes him look worse. And most people will not think that the investigation is being careful enough if he isn't in custody. If everything is done carefully, and he is found innocent, then I agree that it is possible that he was working around the clock and didn't know of a new crime that happened at his property. But... already, since he was only suspended, it will look worse for him, because it will be hard to believe that evidence was not tampered with.
I am Sure the crime scene techs have already processed both apartments, so no evidence for the detective to tamper with.
?
I have a different spelled name and I am past 50, shame on the teacher that is so bigoted that she wants a room full of Johnny and Sarah's, I can imagine how she comes across to those children that she feels names are too much for an educator to deal with. She needs to find some other profession so she won't have to deal with other cultures.
As far as this cop knowing what was going on in the other half of a double, seems odd he wouldn't know the character of his cousin even if he didn't know what he might be doing. When you have family members that are doing illegal things most families all know who they are especially if they live right next door.
well it looks like the Mayor is wright the cops should go on strike, where were they, at a donut shop, if someone had, had a gun maybe less people would of been killed, I am sure they will let him just quite his job
NYPD MY A$$
I don't think the police, should have released the information to the media about tracking the cell phone pings, just giving information to future wanna-be hoodlums, nobody needed to know.
Come on Dan. I've known that phones could be traced since I was 9. It's not really earth-shattering news.
Hard to believe it was the cop. It's common knowledge that you can find a cell phone by triangulating it from the cell towers. I can't imagine the cop wouldn't have removed the chip from the phone or destroyed it. I'm something of a liberal and criticize law enforcement from time to time but this just doesn't make sense. No matter my personal leanings, I try to acknowledge reality....
Maybe he was an affirmative action cop.
There could have been reasons... like wanting the victim to survive. It doesn't mean he didn't know.
Vanda, What the hell is wrong with Apple or Star? You are such a naturist. Yes, I just played the nature card. Nature has had to endure centuries of abuse what with ice ages, global warming, climate change, wars, litter, pollution, gravity, skyscrapers, and now space junk. Nature should get reparations from the oppression it has had to endure all these centuries becasue of the man. People need to educate themselves before making such naturist comments.
if it were any non L.E.O. person in this position he or she would have been arrested the moment they could find him or hermost likely beat him or her down in the process and he or she would be guilty until Proved innocent. but it was a cop so he just got suspended without pay. ( it is much harder to prove you are innocent than guilty
I don't know if he is innocent or guilty, therefore i will try not to judge in advance BUT i don't like the double standard that cops and politicians have they get away with to much and there is nothing that can be done about it by you and or me. As the old saying goes Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutly.
NYPD bull@!$%#,most detectives are defectives on the NYPD force !
Who cares about the race of the officer and victim? I cannot get over a police officer kidnapped a citizen off the street and all he got was suspended without pay.
This criminal should be in prison, if it were any of the rest of us, we would be in custody having a talk with all of the new shower mates we'd see there.
I care about the race of the perp and the victim. This means our white women are being hunted down and kidnapped. White women can't even walk the streets without fear of black men kidnapping them. She was probably just going out for some iced tea and candy.
Where is the outrage? Where is -- um, who exactly stirs up trouble when white people are victimized like Jessie and Al do for the blacks? Whoever is it, where are they?????
Sweetie, I didn't read the gender or the race of the victim anywhere in the article. Where are you getting your info???
o'really is all worked up about those poor white women being snatched off the street by the big black thug ...... but what they failed to tell you is that this white woman was not stranger to this thug and that she has some priors for forgery. Now put that together with credit card machines and I'd say that they had a deal that went really really bad.
This is from the original report: According to a source, the victim has at least three prior arrests for forgery, and the kidnapping does not appear to be random.
read them and weep o'really. Guess she wasn't just some innocent fawn like white woman going grocery shopping and being snatched off the street!
So what? That didn't stop the wailing over not-so-innocent Treyvon, now did it?
I want to see pictures of her as an adorable 12 year old with pigtails and the kidnapper's mug shot plastered all over the news. Justice for what's her name! (maybe I should trademark that.)
she may have been dressed in a very tight tank top and a very tight mini skirt and high heels, and found her walking home from school. thats why they kidnapped her...hehe
shes been there done that thing with the credit card machines it sounds like, but we will have to wait for more to come from the OTHER detectives on duty..
so you get busted for race baiting and you fall back on Trayvon Martin. The 17 year old that was killed because the neighborhood (self appointed) watch commander shot and killed. Is that were you are going?
Damn your life must suck rotten eggs.
Busted for race baiting? No one puts one over on you, tired. LOL
The term "double standard" comes to mind. I don't know why.
Chris1985 -
It's very disappointing phelps didn't metal - but when you do drugs - you lose. Hope this makes him stop. I know people that do drugs and they are miserable. But they don't want to change. It's so sad to witness - they are wasting their lives - just like phelps.
Why are people so quick to assume that this police officer HAD to know what was going on or he's "deficient"?
Scenario: cousin kidnaps girl while officer is at work. Cousin ties her up and stashes her in crawl space or secret room in garage.
Nothing in the article says the victim was tied up in plain sight in the middle of the garage. If she was indeed kept in a small crawlspace or room, why should we assume the officer would be stupid to not know about that? Read some old crime stories about kidnappings. A lot of them involved the victims being kept in small secret rooms in the garage.
Oh my. I really feel safe now...(NOT!)
If the cops are the bad guys, who are you going to call? No wonder so many people want to own guns. How sad is that.............. (Just sayin..)
Gee Wally - I had no idea someone was bound and gagged in my garage and that there was equipment lying around to make fake credit cards!! How could that possibly happen? LOL
HEY CUZZ, whats with the duct tape on your girl friends mouth and that funky lookin machine in the corner you foolin with ?????
Be aware that a two-family house has separate entrances for each unit and the occupants of the 2 units generally only have as much access to the other unit as apartment neighbors. It would have been very easy for the officer's cousin to conceal his actions.
What a cop! His cousin is counterfitting and kidnapping and, whoosh, it goes right over his head.
Yo, Ondre, where'd you get the 75 grand?
My aunt gave it to me, man.
You mean my mother? Is it the first of the month already? Well, ok, stay out of trouble now. Gotta get to work and catch those criminals trying to sell big gulps to minors.
O'really - what makes you think the cop was aware of his cousin's finances? Just because they lived together doesn't mean the cop had right to his cousin's bank statements.
I love the double standard in this country. People are quick to praise and adore military personnel, who are protecting us from NO ONE and are often just as corrupt as some police officers. Yet everyone criticizes and chastise the police force, who actually ARE protecting us. This is in no way a disrespect or bash on military personnel as they deserve respect, but so do police officers.
It's the double standard that is so difficult, and also the appearance of evil. A detective with access to evidence might be suspected of tampering with it; best at least, if not to arrest, then put him in some kind of boot and make him stay some place else until evidence can be collected. But it's too late: he was only suspended, which means that any reasonable citizen will find it hard to believe that he kept his hands off it.
Elizabeth, shut up with the evidence tampering already. You must have said the same thing a dozen times already. You make it seem as if the cops rescued the victim from the garage, then questioned the detective, and just ignored the actual scene, like there was only one copy assigned to this and he can only do one thing at a time. By the time questioning was over, the scene would have already been processed.
Secondly, I agree with Neil. I feel like the majority of people's misguided comments about this stem from the fact that most of them don't know what a two family house is.
Who let the cop haters have computers?
Oh that's right they were given them in prison. But your kids have to buy their own.
Who taught the jack-booted nazi thug women how to read? Another great prison literacy program?
Who gave the cops can't do anything wrong naive person a computer?
Oh that's right the tax payers because she took it home from her Government job at the police dept. But we have to buy our own.
why..why.. we stoled them from you...
What Shiftlock said. If it was anyone else that wasn't a cop, you'd be thrown in jail faster than you could say "I had what in my garage?". And they wonder why people don't respect or trust the police. Internal affairs?? Right. That's why this bum is sitting at home and NOT in Jail where he SHOULD BE! Plus besides the kidnapping he was making fake credit cards?? HELLO!!!! the NYPD is a joke
.
Wow. For a split second, I thought maybe you didn't read the article, but that can't be. Nobody would comment on something they didn't read. Nobody is that careless. I guess you're just crainially challenged.
Notice the victim was in the detective's garage but he wasn't arrested since he's a cop- anyone else would be in cuffs
The fact that the victim was located by pinging his cellphone strongly suggest that the cop couldn't have been involved because he would have known to disable the phone. Don't you think?
Notice how the victim was in the detective's garage, but he wasn't arrested since he wasn't the one who kidnapped her. They clearly arrested the person who did.
Rayn and how do they know he wasn't part of it? Because he said he wasn't? LOL right. If he didn't do anything wrong then why did they take his gun and badge away? If they did that then he should have been placed into custody. As an accessory.
Because that's standard in an investigation involving a member of law enforcement to avoid suggestions of impropriety. I see it hasn't stopped you though.
You're More... no, hasn't stopped me from seeing the truth- what's your excuse?
he had something to do with it. @!$%# the police. if ur not one of them ur a enemy.
