97-year-old woman missing for four days is found alive in creek bed

Vinton County Sheriff

Edna Clay is seen in a photo handed out by the Sheriff's Office in Vinton County, Ohio.

McARTHUR, Ohio -- A 97-year-old woman who was missing for four days was found alive Saturday in a dried-up creek bed, authorities said.

Edna Clay was flown to a Columbus hospital for treatment late Saturday afternoon, NBC4i.com reported. She had last been seen at her home near McArthur on Wednesday evening.

Vinton County authorities said she was found in a wooded area not far from her home, NBC4i.com reported. They said she may have suffered broken bones but spoke to rescuers.

Earlier in the week, Clay's family told NBC station WSAZ of Charleston, W.Va., that she had some early signs of dementia, but was very healthy.

“She raised 12 children and is tougher than a pine knot. As far as her vitals, she was very healthy and took no medication. We can't even get her to take a vitamin,” Bonnie Faulkner, Clay’s daughter, told WSAZ.

Happy Edna was found alive. Take her home and keep an eye on her. Do not put her in a home for complete strangers to take care of her.

All the best Edna - carry on!

Great story. Glad she was found. Speedy recovery.

Looks like the shift from MSNBC to NBC hasn't helped the reporting too much:

They said she may have suffered broken bones but spoke rescuers.

Don't put her in a home with strangers Lana? What are they supposed to do with her, get a zip line and and collar and then let her go in the back yard? She has dementia, she needs 24 hour care and that's where people with that kind of illness get it, in homes with complete strangers. Just the facts...

@devils son, I had a Great Uncle who worked for my Home Town until he was 96 and got pensioned off. That was when they started giving out pensions in like 1949-50. He could tell you stories about shoveling ahead a team of horses so horse powered snow plow could get to plow the snow. He died at 99 and could get plenty far on a pair of legs in a short time. Keep in mind that he was doing this work since around the early 1870s or so. Before the autos and Trucks. Just for interest to some people, if your not aware, The first Gas delivery tanks were horse drawn wagons going to the fuel pumps.

I very happy the lady was found and all is OK. We actually owe a lot to these older folks.

wow, 97 and raised 12 kids, and I bet those kids knew to respect others. She is healthy because she most likely raised her own vegis. She refuses to take vitamins, well, you get enough from the foods you eat, good for you edna. And she lives in WV? She is probably one of those elders that smoked a pipe as alot of women did. A sip of whiskey is probably the only medication she takes. My grandparents were the same way except the men died earlier (80s) but none the less worked hard their whole lives, and were healthy. Too bad we have become couch dependent, keep moving is what the old man always said.

joy, yeah, they knew to respect others so much that not one of the twelve took good enough care of her to keep her from getting lost. How many in-laws and adult grandchildren are also in that count of family that let gramma wander off? My husbands parents are in their 80's with only two children and the entire family of children, grandchildren and in-laws make sure they are safe at all times.

I'm glad she was found safely.

I hope they don't put her in a home where she will be confined to a wheelchair and end up in a diaper in a few weeks. I have worked in a lot of Nursing Homes over the years and know that independent people like her do not do well once they lose their freedom. She just needs a little closer monitoring by the family.

I agree, and that loss of sparkle and fast-tracking of decline is just the start. I didn't work in NH but saw many things, esp when they didn't know I was there. I usually went to do Pet Therapy, and now, as an atty, I see the NH abuse cases that come in. The reality of the person sitting in front of me is far worse than what I found doing an 80-page research paper on NH Abuse & Neglect, and it is hard for me to stay professional and not want to put my arms around them as they explain what happened. However, she can get home health care aides-in NY, not too hard to get, but then again, NY's Medicaid system is one of the more highly compensated ones (and like others, needs more clamping down on fraud). Friends and I do this all the time-part of Estate Planning, just like Pet Trusts, wills, Living Wills, Power of Attorney forms, Health Care Proxies, etc.

I don't think I am going to keep going on long like this myself, I doudt I will ever make it near 97. You do realize that people who are near a hundred years old are a walking history books. They should be Revered and not put on a shelf. Got something that needs doing and can't figure out how to do it? Talk to an old person, they know how to do things that books and computers can't tell you. To the wonderful 97 year old lady in Ohio, I tip my Helmet to.

I don't expect to live that long, my family history shows we die relatively young somewhere between 65 and 75. I am glad about that, in this day and age if you don't have enough money to survive on or enough kids to kick in to support you then you will not survive anyway.

I am so glad to hear about this "young" lady....I love our older people. It is ashamed how this world treats our older people. A lot of times the family try to help but can't do anything with a strong willed person. It is wierd though that noone looked around the nieghberhood but like someone said she could have been moving around. I just hate that the Obama package that is headed our way will not help older people so if they are not as tough as pine knots they will never make it. This lady has done a lot of things right tho. you can tell. May God continue to bless her.

"They said she may have suffered broken bones but spoke rescuers." Rescuers? What's that--a different language? Seriously, though, I'm glad they found her. My grandmother did that once--we lived on 5 acres and she just went off one day. We called the police and the fire department showed up, too (small town)...finally found her laying on her back in the middle of the cat tails in the dried up pond; she had she hands behind her head and was just as content as could be staring at the sky and clouds. I guess she just wanted to get away by herself for awhile!

Correct you are, "lying" would be the proper word--my mistake. But my grandmother was Southern, so she would have said "laying" as I did, lol. (That was supposed to be a joke, for those without a sense of humor, so all you Southerners don't jump down my throat, too.) My reference to the "language" was only because there seemed to be words missing in the sentence, which changed the meaning of the sentence, not that it was poor grammar, blue. I just thought it was funny, people, and the story sparked a memory that made me feel good to share--my mistake again. Good grief!

I have to agree with the "spelling and grammar checkers". It isn't just this article, it's persistent among the reporting presented by MSN/NBC. Traditionally there has been a degree of professionalism associated with journalism, and while you generally won't catch every single mistake, it was unheard-of to find multiple errors in every single piece presented. In today’s world we have word processing tools that take literally a few seconds to run to check both spelling and grammar, so there's simply no excuse for it other than people being lazy and sloppy. In this instance you can generally read the story (though it took me a moment to figure out what they meant by "but spoke rescuers", but sometimes it's more difficult to understand what's being conveyed. On top of that, it's distracting.

I, too, agree with the spelling and grammar checkers. If you have to spend time deciphering an article, you might as well have elementary school kids write the articles. I thought journalists had to have degrees.

On another note, you go, Edna Clay. Same to her kids if they don't stick her in a nursing home.

The only time they get off their rear ends is to get a beer, piss, and go to the post office to get their entitlement checks. Edna shows more stamina and hard work than the two I just described. You know, where you pay into this kind of insurance fund for 50-60 years (while loaning the U.S. government from your funds, when it gets a little short), so that when you get older, and retire you'll have something to retire on? Is that what you're talking about? WELL!! THAT'S NOT AN "ENTITLEMENT", they are just getting their money back, plus a return on their investment. You Dolt!!

She raised 12 children yet not one of those 12 (or their little ones) are there to take care of her when she needs them. Sad. She should have aborted them all, at least she would have been able to say she was solitary for real.

Well, it is sad that it took four days for her TWELVE kids to notice she was gone.

I have to agree here. My 97 year old mother lives by herself and has a very active life but, my 64 year old sister and my 68 year old self call her everyday. We both make sure she is okay.

Pangs... YOU are the one who should have been aborted! When you assume things.. you make an ass out of yourself! Nasty attitude you've got... Needs a BIG adjustment!!!

Unfortunately when this story was picked up, many of the details were left out. The search was on for her within hours after she was last seen. A large group of emergency personnel and volunteers were searching on foot, ATV, and horseback and they even had a K-9 unit involved. They found her in an area that they had already searched. I saw the original story and figured she would not be found alive, so I'm very happy to hear they were able to find her in time.

I am very happy this lovely woman was found alive. She may have been 'very healthy' in BODY-but apparently not in MIND. I do hope her family keeps a closer eye on her in the future. I have a neighbor who is a 93 year old widower. He lives alone, takes long drives, takes 1/2 a pill a day and does 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles! But...if he ever starts 'wandering'-that will be the time to call his family and tell them he needs to be with people who can keep an eye on him 24/7. Physical good health is great at an older age; but when the mind is starting to become unhealthy, ignoring THAT is so wrong.

Maybe this Lady just got done reading a “Sarah Palin” book….became Confused, Irrational and Lost her Mind. It seems to be a “Side Effect”.

Seriously? This is somehow political? Get a life. Your handlers really do own your opinion.
