I worked for Ancestry.com once upon a time. The strange fact about genealogy is that in the "old" days, people had lots of children and their descendants are vast and numerous. There is actually a tree out there that shows how several presidents are related and I'm not talking about Bush I and II.

Ghengis Khan had 12 sons, there are now 16 million descendants in Asia. 8% of the men in the area of Mongolia. Brooke Shields is a descendant of the Prophet Muhammed of Islam. Its really not that strange. My direct ancestor was Governor of New Amsterdam and his descendants number in the 10,000s and that's only been 350 years. So, the odds are actually pretty good. There are always jokes about people's family trees going to some noble line, but if you get extensive enough, that's normally true.

What are the odds? 4 generations per century, 1650 to 1950,... 12 generations. 2 parents, 4 grand parents. 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1028, 2048, 4096 10th great-grand parents. The connection ain't so hard to believe. Isn't there another president on the Dunham side? (as an aside, the geometric progression does not account for cousins marrying, so it settles down after a bit.)

Since the imposition of the income tax we have all become slaves to the ruling class.

That's gotta be neat, knowing where you came from, who you're related to, if you have famous relatives. I wish I knew where I came from. If there's one regret in my life, it would be that.

But at least my kids can trace several generations of Native Americans on their paternal mother's side and Polish aristocracy on their paternal father's side. There is a distant cousin who currently is a big soccer star in Poland.

However, where you came from is not as important as who you are, and your consideration for another person shouldn't be because of who their parents were but who they themselves are, on their own merits.

According to my DNA, 40,000 years ago my ancestors were African Berbers and Finnish Reindeer herders, but that's 40,000 years ago, genetically speaking, of course!

Two shows on TV are enlightening concerning geneology.......one is the Lisa Kudrow production "Who Do You Think You Are?" on NBC and the other is "Finding Your Roots" on PBS with Henry Louis Gates.....both of those shows have found amazing progressions that will blow you away. Many, many whites have black ancestors during the slave era and many, many blacks have white ancestors. You would not believe the mixing of the races that went on back then.

As for who is related to someone that far back and that obscure it is impossible. The records of the Slaves are not well kept. Who that person was and who they fathered or mothered is impossible to have a definitive match.

Not sure, I've only done a little looking at my own ancstry, but have a friend who is a professional researcher. All of her data comes from county courthouses, court dockets, church records, land sales, family Bibles, etc.

DNA not necessary to find connections, just good record keeping. The process has really taken off in the computer era.

Native Americans didn't just spring from the ground in North America. The land was already here when your ancestors crossed the Bering Strait ice bridge from Asia. They also didn't believe in the very concept of land ownership, so for you to say that the land belonged to your people is not only disingenuous and naive, it flies in the face of every generation of Native Americans who lived and died on the North American continent before Europeans came. Arguing over who owns the land is like two fleas arguing over who owns the dog.

OK, I'm having a real hard time buying this.
And I'm more than happy to share why.

1.) How did this man end up as an indentured servant? I mean, it would require his having been on this continent as a black man who had offered himself to indentured servitude for a set period of time in exchange for his passage to this great land, or shipped here as someone beholden to someone back in Great Britain to begin with. Not likely, since That would mean that he traveled from Africa, (more likely was shipped as a slave if he came from there at all, due to the fact that Great Britain and much of Europe had been involved in a thriving slave trade since the 16th century, (that's the 1500's) . So the whole premise that he was an indentured servant is suspect to begin with, not to mention that it was the common practice to just place black men who offered themselves into indentured servitude under the rule of full slavery. So while this may be remotely possible, it is so far from realistic as to be considered laughable.

2.) If he was a slave of African origin, how did he possibly father not just a child, but children, (plural) with a free white woman in the heart Virginia? The chances of being able to do so were extremely slim and the social and legal ramifications were huge. The woman in question would most likely have been ostracized to the point of not being able to provide for her children and he certainly would not have been able to provide for them from a slaves salary. (tongue in cheek) I'm not saying that it didn't happen, just that it is such a slim margin of possibility.

3.) The possibility of any of their children being passed off as white freemen is very slim at best. Genetic rule does not allow for this except on a rare occasion. It typically can take several generations to dilute any one racial trait to the point of in-distinction. Not to mention that the laws establishing the "Nativity Conditions" or the rules of whether the offspring of slaves and free persons were free or slaves were not established until 1662 in the Virginia colony whereby it was established that the children were considered held according to the condition of the mother, yet if any "Christian" person were to commit fornication with a slave they would be required to pay double the fines imposed by the former act.. Prior to that they were generally considered as slaves.

So as I have pointed out, while it is not entirely impossible for this to be the case, The times as they were back then make it a very slim possibility at best. While the pyramid like multiplication of the genetic tree does make it possible from a genetic standpoint.

All of this being said, I wouldn't put it beyond these lying bastards to put this out there for the political effect. After all, it may strike a cord with those disenfranchised with their perceived betrayal by this man, causing them to come back to the fold. After all being to identify with a candidate is very important in the political arena as most people vote from feeling rather than intellect.

My genealogy shows that I am a 3rd cousin to George Washington 9 times removed and I am related to the Dunhams as well. There is a lot of genes mixed in between now and then so this claim regarding Obama means very little. This more likely is nothing more than a ploy by his reelection committee to make Obama more palatable to the black voters that no longer believe in him or his so called dream. Amazing that there are still folks that want to convince us that he is the first black to be elected president, which is totally untrue. He is in fact the first mixed-race president to be elected.

A Short Course re: the History of Slavery

Slavery was a byproduct of indentured servitude. People of all races, and men, women, and children, were indentured servants.

The first black child born in America, Baby Williams, was born free in 1619. The first person in America to be sentenced to a lifetime of servitude was a white man. Most indentured servants became so through an arrangement whereby their masters paid their fare to America in exchange for them working for their masters for a period of time, usually about three to four years. Female indentured servants were being impregnated by their masters, and under English law, the men were responsible for the children. They usually even had physical custody. The men often made arrangements with the women to set them free in exchange for the women keeping the paternity of their children quiet. Hence, there were a lot of what one governor called "bastard" children (of all mixtures of races) running around the colonies--something which was intolerable, especially given that most of the European colonists were Puritans. Various colonies tried a multitude of methods for dealing with the problem. Laws came on the books. Gradually, white women were remanded to the custody of the churches. Black women, who were thought to be more lascivious than white women, were put out in the fields. Finally, the State of Virginia put the first law on the books tying slavery to the womb:

Children got by an Englishman upon a Negro woman shall be bond or free, according to the condition of the mother, and if any Christian shall commit fornication with a Negro man or woman, he'll pay double the fines of the former act.

In 1661, Virginia was the first state to invert English law to support what morphed into a slave system to solve the problem of illegitimate children in the colony. Slavery was passed by the mother, although no state, including Virginia, actually defined slavery. The status of white women increased dramatically to accommodate the fact that their children were free. (Racial slavery did already exist on a wide scale, but mainly in the Caribbean and Latin America, under Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Dutch laws. Under those laws, male slaves where favored for their ability to do very hard work. Female slaves were imported to produce children. However, only the male slaves could father those children and basically escape liability, because under the laws of those respective countries, men were still responsible for rearing their children. It should also be pointed out that unlike slavery here in the U.S., slavery in the rest of the world was not chattel slavery. In Latin America, for instance, slaves could sue their masters for maltreatment.)

I think that it is important to note that in the very early years of the colonies, the vast majority of Black people were mainly voluntary immigrants. Over a period of about 40 years, Black people became involuntary immigrants and enslaved, as various discriminatory laws came on the books. (That's why immigration issues need to be paid careful attention to.) See, what a lot of people don't seem to understand is that once you own the womb, you will eventually own the men too, since a little more than half of the children will be male. (This is why I'm pro-choice, but that's another issue.) Since black women were put out in the fields, their children went with them strapped to their backs or working at their sides. However, there was still a problem, which the fines tried to address: the children of black men and white women were free. Chattel slavery had not taken root yet, so slaves at first did have some freedom to come and go. At one time, North Carolina tried enslaving white women along with black men. That didn't work. (Too many white women were actually enslaved.) What did? Lynching. So it became the mechanism that was used to keep black men and white women from having free brown babies, although even black women and children and even white men were lynched too from time to time.

By the way, Native Americans did not make good slaves, because they knew the land too well and just simply ran away.

Contrarian001- Not ALL black people lived in Africa, even four hundred years ago. There were many people of color living all over Europe and Asia. It is very possible that Mr Punch was not from Africa at all. I don't know the story of the Presidential ancestor in this article, but I do know that many people of many colors from different parts of the world indentured themselves in order to make the trip to the new world.

Your reasoning for this story not being true are based entirely on racism and ignorance of real history, although you talk a pretty good game. The problem is your reasoning is based on assumptions which do not hold up under scrutiny.

I personally find the article quite interesting as should every American, or just anyone, anywhere. We usually do not know the struggles of those ancestors who came before us. We don't understand what courage and hardship really are. When we take the time to learn these stories it can give us, all of us, pause to remember how tenuous life is and how so many of our stories are connected.

At no time in America were the Irish enslaved to anyone - not ever! Indentured servitude is not the same as slavery! An indentured servant worked to pay off a debt for passage to America or for some other reason and typically completed the term of service in less than seven years.

I am a direct descendant of Cleopatra, I know this because in my past lives regressions where I remembered fans waving and hot desert air and dirt, lots and lots of dirt. I seem to remember other famous and not-so famous ancestors as well. Sometimes tequila does that.

My aunt Minnie, the one with the high cheekbones told me that I bore a striking resemblance to Warren's Native American ancestors, except none of them claimed minority status to get a job at Harvard. Ive been doing genealogy for 30 years, and I find it extremely hard to believe that all of a sudden they can trace Obama's mothers tree back to 1615, and thru a black lineage.. first of all, there were 25,000 blacks living in Virginia in 1715,, or about 25% of the Virginia Population of 90,000 inhabitants.. There are little, if few records of all the white settlers, much less even fewer of the black inhabitants. Churches and land exchanges along with births and marriages were rarely recorded. Most of the population were farmers and were illiterate so did not keep family records, much less write any family history down. The first census did not occur till 1790, and only recorded the head of household no wives or children's names were listed till the 1850 census.. So I find that being able to trace Obama's mothers tree back to 1620's extremely unlikely. I also find that Ancestry has erroneous information that wishful researchers sometimes "create" to help get the tree they want, and doing so without proper documentation, its all speculative.. and of the 25,000 negro inhabitants living in Virginia in the early 1700's, not to mention the 100 years prior to that,, these researchers can narrow it down to Obama's family line, -really,, what a line of lies is that,, also the term Slave comes from the Slavic countries a term for White slaves used about 1000 years ago,, -we got over it.

This was in the early 1960's so what do you think would have happened to that woman back in slave times. She would have starved to death without a husband of means to support her. First of all I really want to know how they know who the first slave was. They were brought by the ship loads from Africa, and sold into slavery here in the U.S. Most of the time families were broke up and sent far away from each other, only small children were left with mothers. It would be virtually impossible to go that far back to connect a blood lines, because of poor ship logs, record keeping, blacks could not write, and families were broke up. I have been doing genealogy for over ten years and it is hard enough to try to follow lines that have records, that you have to research.

mDNA = mitochondrial (maternal line) dna test

yDNA = paternal line test

Respect must be earned, or it is worthless. The person occupying the Oval Office has not earned one bit of respect. There were many abolitionists in the North -- how many do you suppose there were in the South? If the North were slaveholders into the nineteenth century like the South, why were slaves from the south risking their lives to run away to the North? Lincoln was for both preserving the Union and freeing the slaves. It doesn't have to be either/or. Come to think of it, conservatives usually think in terms of either/or, with no moderation or gray areas between, in other words, the definition of fanatics.

Civil War was about slavery. Jeff Davis himself gave slavery as the reason in 1862, when the Confederacy's chances of winning the war was still looking good. It was only after the war was over that the stated reason changed.

Slavery in the North was over well before the start of the Civil War. The various states in the North had abolisted slavery on their own. However, the country was still divided. The issue of slave versus free colored a lot of the legislation that went through Congress, for example the Missouri Compromise.

Lincoln thought slavery was abhorant. However, as a candidate, he did not believe that he had the legal means to overturn it. Once the war started howver, he found the opportunity to free the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation.

One quote from Lincoln, below; note the date, well before he became president:

" I think slavery is wrong, morally, and politically. I desire that it should be no further spread in these United States, and I should not object if it should gradually terminate in the whole Union."

What does your book of morales tell us to do?

I read it because my family has always been into genealogy even before we had heard the term. There was even a book published on my family (An old Southern family) with painstaking research. We were granted land by the King of England way back when, we still have the original document signed by him with his seal. (My older brother got that) and I own the last 800 acres of the land (Will be a gift to my university for use as a fresh water marine biology center to complement the Salt Water one at Bernard Baruch. We have built a house with 3 smaller guest homes on it, the compound was designed to be easily turned into the center upon the death of the last of my siblings. We already allow researchers to use the land on a project basis. It will never be developed beyond the 3-4 acre compound. I think my ancestor who received the grant in 1720 would like that. I know my grandfather who left it to me would.
